Berna Hotel reviews

Aug 2007, Mrs M Kirby

We found the hotel, situated in 5 blocks, quite conveniently situated just up a small slope from the public beach, but were disappointed in the food and room size.
Our room, No. 62, was one of four small rooms recently built right next to the pool, which meant we had to walk on the (usually wet) pool edge to get to the communal door to our room. This meant the marble type steps down were often slippy - not very good for we older people!
It was very small, only 11ft by 13ft. Sun only reached the good sized balcony during part of the daytime when we were usually out (none morning or evening) and the tall trees prevent much of our view of the lake, but we could see the mountains opposite.
The hotel had no garden but plenty of roof terrace and sun chairs for guest use. Guests could use the garden of the adjoining hotel but we preferred the public Town Hall gardens which were situated just over the road, behind the hotel. Here was also a history of the Lemon growing in the region.
Food was rather monotonous, so we sometimes ate out. The breakfast rolls were always very dry and the only fruit was prunes! Dinner menu had to be chosen the night before - there was a choice of three dishes but sweet was always 3 slices of cheese or fruit. Our waiter was friendly, but other waiters just ignored us when we greeted them as we made our way through to our table.
Reception staff were always pleasant and helpful; especially when we arrived as we had to ask for 2nd pillows, tooth glasses, centre for toilet roll and faulty bathroom light. The loose towel rail never was tightened! Cleanliness was very good throughout, and the Pizza snack bar at the pool was very good and friendly.
I enjoyed my week in Limone but would not go back again, especially to The Berna.
Limone itself is a large, pleasant village, with level prom, but steep walks to all but the lake side hotels, so watch for this when booking. The village organises good entertainment every Sunday evening from Opera to Firework displays.
Ferries are very regular and I would recommend a day out on the ferry which calls at about 11 villages as it goes down the lake and give you well over an hour at Simone before it returns.
There is a bus as well as the ferry to the top of the lake where a service bus runs at regular intervals to Verona for anyone not wanting to spend about 5 hours there which the coach trip usually stay in the town for. The Dolomite trip is a must. The villages at the South end of the lake are more convenient for excursions but they do not have the spectacular view which surround the Northern villages.
