Lopez de Haro

My wife and I stayed in Hotel Lopez de Haro for three nights at the tail end of a two-week trip to Spain. The staff at Lopez de Haro were by far the friendliest and most helpful of all the hotel staffs we encountered during our trip. From the moment we arrived to the moment we departed they were attentive and helpful. They helped us figure out bus schedules for day trips to San Sebastian and the La Rioja region, however late at night. Location is good, near the Guggenheim and close to good restaurants and the old quarter. The front desk staff was nearly unwilling to provide suggestions for restaurants or wine bars. Beds were comfortable and the rooms were very quiet except for some hammering going on at 8am(!) every morning. Breakfast was a nice buffet, server was a bit aloof. Good value for the price though.

We stayed here for 4 nights in August 2006. Position: Excellent. An easy 10 minute stroll to the Guggenheim. 15 minutes walk to the Old Town and 5 minutes or so to the main shopping street. On a nice quiet back street and handily placed for any number of local bars and restaurants. If you plan on spending a few days in Bilbao the location of this hotel is hard to beat. I stayed at the Lopez De Haro for one night in May. The price was reasonable enough at around 100 euros but I wouldn't consider it a five star hotel, maybe with very very good service they might rate it. But service is indifferent, price lists are on everything such that I was worried about accidentally winding up with a massive bill if I had breakfast (the front desk said it was included....but everywhere else in the room said that breakfast was extra, and being very expensive I didn't want to risk it! ). ‘Classy’ is the word that comes to mind after two nights at this boutique-style hotel. The furnishings, restaurants, bar and lobby are all exquisitely done, and the staff are very friendly. Good value as well, as c Euro 100 inc breakfast. Its not perfect – the rooms are only average sized, and they are not fully soundproofed from adjacent rooms – but the stylish looks won out.
