The hotel being an over 16's only was...
9 / 10
Aug 2007, Miss K Lenton

The hotel being an over 16's only was fantastic, no kids! Having the pool to yourself more often than not, I cannot complain.
The food in the restaurant was good, a selection for pretty much everybody. All the staff in the restaurant were extremely friendly and helpful also, nothing was ever too much trouble for them.
The nightly entertainment was OK, however if you are under the age of 30-40, depending on your taste, I wouldn't recommend the entertainment every night, being 17 myself I found that the hotel catered mainly for the older generation, which is understandable, but I didn't find it very enjoyable some nights. However, the entertainment team usually put on their own small show and getting the audience involved, this was very entertaining most nights. Another thing which wasn't so great in the Pavillion bar, they did not like you to go up to the bar to get a drink, but they rather have waiter service, as nice as it is not having to get up and queue ages for drinks while there is a show going on, when the bar is full for the night, it can prove quite difficult to get one of the waiter's attention as they are fairly rushed off their feet!
I have no complaints about the pools, I understand that the top is a lot cooler than the bottom pool however, if you just want to relax and completely unwind then you'll be more suited for the top pool, as all the daytime activities with the entertainment reps take place at the bottom pool. I recommend taking part in a few of the activities as the entertainment team are just fantastic, VERY entertaining!
A couple of the reps seemed to be a bit 'stuck up', for a better phrase to describe them, however we found that they weren't too bad... and watching them getting dressed up for the reps shows, well it almost makes up for it, you'll be laughing so hard! Definitely had me in stitches!
The rooms were spacious, with a good size balcony. There being 3 of us, myself and my parents, we had a room which had been partitioned in 2, my parents had their own bedroom and I had a bed in the main room, which worked out pretty well.
We've been back home for about 2 weeks now and I still miss the place loads, especially all the people that made it great. The entertainment team definitely made the holiday for me, so get stuck in and get involved!
Overall, both my parents and I had a great time while there and would recommend the hotel to anyone.

If you are looking for a relaxing...

If you are looking for a relaxing holiday this is the place for you, everything is so relaxed. Unfortunately we had a week of mixed weather but we still enjoyed it. The rooms are massive, everything is equipped, bath/shower, TV, medium sized balcony, 2 sets of table and chairs (one inside and one out)
As for the complex there are two pools, the 'graveyard' pool which is a quiet relaxing pool and an activity pool where the games go on during the day with a quiz at 4pm. In the evening there is entertainment which goes on from 9 till 12. There's everything from bands to comedians.
There are four bars in the complex, one at the bottom pool, one at the top, one in the pavilion and our favourite the monkey bar which has two happy hours, one at 5 and another at 11 (two San Miguels for 2.80euros) and stays open till 1am, there are also a few bars outside the hotel but they close about 2am
The food was excellent unless you have very high standards. There was always a steak, and loads of continental foods. Watch out for the rice though they like to add weird ingredients to it like pineapple.
The hotel itself is all English and so are most of the hotel staff. The one thing I did notice is that there seems to be a war going on between Thomson reps and the hotel itself. For example the hotel provide excursions which are cheaper and also Thomson try to get you to pay for extra things in you room like tea and coffee making facilities which the hotel will give you free of charge!
Overall me and my girlfriend loved this holiday, though we were the youngest by about a century, everyone is really nice. Costa Tequise is a quiet place but a walk down the beach to the main resort is definitely worth it, as well as the water park (but get a taxi). If you go anywhere on the bus be aware they aren't air conditioned and they try and cram as many people on as possible. The beach just outside the hotel isn't the best but a 5minute walk down the prominade and you reach a wikid man-made beach.
Also if you love sea-fishing there are so many places to fish without having anyone to disturb you (because the beach isn't continuous and the rocks go quite far out into the sea), so sneak the fishing stuff in the suitcase without the Mrs seeing it because it will be worth it. We wish we'd had fishing stuff now!
This holiday is definitely a 10 out of 10 and we would go back

I and my husband have just returned...

Jun 2007, Mrs M Charlesworth

I and my husband have just returned from the Coronas Playa Hotel. The hotel was excellent.
Food great, weather great (a bit windy though) staff great, entertainment great, rooms enormous, and the entire hotel was spotless. We cannot fault this hotel at all.
It was great that there were no kids; we usually had an entire swimming pool to ourselves! The pools were cool though; don't think they were heated.
The hotel itself is a 15 minute walk out of Costa Teguise, but a stroll along the sea front is very pleasurable. The beach near the hotel is very rocky, but there is a white sand beach in Costa Teguise itself.
Be careful of men trying to sell fake sunglasses and watches in the town; there are plenty of them, but a firm no will be enough for them to leave you alone.
I really recommend the trips around the island - Timanfaya National Park, and Jameos del Agua are a must, but book the excursions in Costa Teguise, as they cost double through your reps!
The only problem I found with this holiday was with the hotel reps - they were very snooty and unhelpful. The entertainers however were brilliant.
I would definitely go back to this hotel. A brilliant holiday.

4th visit to this Hotel in 12 months,...

Jan 2007, Mr B Berpat

4th visit to this Hotel in 12 months, so obviously we think it is financially a good deal, plus the quality of service, food, and everything about this Hotel is 100 % great.
however, although half board we always eat out on some nights/days, and this is the reason for writing, there is a new Bar/restaurant named 'Hammys' on the sea front near Ryans Bar (At the end of Teneriffe Plaza. stand facing the sea - Hammys is to the right within about 200m)
I have never experienced such welcoming service, and good food, but more important to us was that we received the same level of welcome whether we ordered just a drink or a full meal - We have found in Costa Teguise in many restaurants you are not made to feel so welcome if you just want a drink, especially in the evening.
The 'Man out the front' is Mark, and he is from UK, plus the owner, Hammy, speaks near perfect English so for those lazy ones like me, you have no problem not speaking the local lingo!
Some friends we were with also had 'Special needs' for diet, and it was amazing what they cooked up just for them. Please give this one a try it brilliant

Oct 2006, Miss S Milsom

Myself and 3 others thought the hotel was brilliant, the staff were fantastic and made us feel very welcome. We originally booked the holiday as it came up very cheap, there were quite a few older people there which put us of at first. But when we got further on into the holiday we loved it.
I am in my twenties along with the others who were in there thirties. The entertainment was superb along with the meals! The beach was a bit of a let down along with the prices for sun beds, but there is a beach further on in Costa Teguise that is white sand and clear water!
If you want a club holiday I would not recommend this hotel but if you are looking to relax then this is the place to be. Very, very quite! There are daytime activities which are good fun with the reps.
The holiday was great and I would definitely go back next year.

Located about 20 minutes walk from...

Sep 2006, Dr D Jones

Located about 20 minutes walk from the resort centre, and thus not plagued by the noise of late-night revelries, the hotel is built in the modern low-rise ziggurat style offering sun on all balconies. Twin rooms are big enough to sleep four people in ample space. They are furnished with superbly firm beds. Bed linen is changed every other day and towels are changed daily. Room televisions offer only CNN as an English language channel when a BBC or Sky channel would better suit the almost entirely British clientele. Rooms have a fridge in which you may put your own drinks and there is a hair dryer in the bathroom.
The restaurant is all buffet and offers a very wide choice of food geared towards British tastes with a Spanish option for all meals plus a pasta choice at dinner.
In late September the average age of holidaymakers was over sixty but they were a very lively lot and many took full advantage of the activities organised by Thomson’s “hosts”. The Thomson entertainment staff are excellent and even if you don’t join in the activities there is plenty of amusement to be had from simply watching. In the daytime, this takes place around one of the hotel’s two big pools. The other pool is separated from the first by a line of rooms which provides some sound insulation and is thus fairly quiet.
Facilities are good except that the gym has no view out and is not well-equipped.
If you spend your evening out of your bedroom, whether in the hotel’s own Pavilion Bar or off the premises, you will not be disturbed by the noise from excellent the evening entertainment which ends at midnight. If you retire to bed early then you are likely to prefer rooms 220 to 240 (ground floor [garden rooms]), 241 to 262 (garden suites) or rooms 320 to 340 (first floor, better sea views) or 429 to 447 (top floor, even better sea views). Rooms 421 to 425 offer top floor sea views over a pool. Rooms 301 to 316 look towards the sea over the same pool but being lower offer less of a view.
Hotel staff and the Thomson staff are excellent, friendly and offer very good service.

7 / 10
May 2006, Mrs T Mason

I stayed at the Coronas Playa for a week at the end of April with my husband and two children, aged 20 and 23. We were in garden suites, ours overlooked the sea and the kids had one which was in the garden area. They are very spacious and lovely and clean with the maids coming in every day.
The two pools are gorgeous, the bottom one is a lot quieter and very peaceful but if you want to join in the activities you can go to the other pool where there was a lot more going on. While we enjoyed our stay here we did feel a bit out of place as the average age is about 65-70 and the pace of life is very sedate. This is lovely if you want a really peaceful holiday, but we all felt that is was a bit too peaceful.
I am 46 and my husband 51 and although we are not movers and groovers we could have done with a bit more action. I also think that the entertainment could have been a lot better, it was very Hi De Hi and amateurish but The Pavilion, where it is held is very nice with candles on all the tables and plenty of waiters. There are singers in The Monkey Bar at the front of the hotel but it's very quiet in there and the staff aren't that friendly. Just outside the hotel there are a few bars and restaurants and one in particular called Dickens had a really lovely atmosphere and the young lad serving was very nice. We spent a few nights there.
Costa Teguise itself is about 15 mins walk or only 2 euros in a taxi, here there are some lovely restaurants and a few pubs. We found one called The Lighthouse which had some good singers on and also had a great atmosphere. If you are going on a trip round the island you can find leaflets by the roadside where you just turn up at the bus stop at the stated time and place and pay on the day.
These are much cheaper and better value for money than the organised excursions through the tour reps. Also I wish I had realized before I packed four big, heavy beach towels that you can get them at reception for a small deposit. It's also worth noting that you can hire a kettle for your room which is very handy for cups of tea and coffee.
All in all this was a lovely hotel but if you are young at heart I would give it a miss and I don't think I would go back.

We holidayed in the Coronas playa...
8 / 10
May 2006, Mr G Smith

We holidayed in the Coronas playa between the dates of 19/04/06 to 26/04/06. We arrived by taxi as Costa Teguise is only a ten minute taxi ride away at 16 euros, we wanted our holiday to start off relaxed and by waiting for everyone to get on the coach and load/unload baggage we decided this was the way.
On arrival at the hotel we were greeted with drinks and our baggage taken to our room as we booked in. The hotel we found very clean, room of ample size and cleaned daily but two snags, the bed was a slab of concrete and bins being emptied by waste disposal trucks at 530am every morning {our room high floor sea view}.
Spanish Hotel staff were very professional in every aspect from reception through to catering staff, even the cleaners greeted you with effortless charm. Food was hot and plentiful but the cuts of meat left little to be desired. Breakfast was the best meal of the day just avoid the sausage! As we were only one of a few young couples (33 & 32) there was very little to do, the weather during our stay was cloudy and very breezey with a few sunny intervals the reading material we had taken with us was finished by day 3, unless you wanted to play French bowls, killer pool, giant jenga or the afternoon quiz which wasn't our scene.
As reported on other reviews we found most holiday makers were over 50 and we agree the best way to describe going down to dinner, around the blue lit pool was a scene from the movie COCOON! As you are met by elderly people in there 50's attire wanting to be the first in line to eat. We found that the monkey bar was the only entertainment on an evening by watching football or formula one etc but even that was interrupted as the hotel had not paid the satellite bill for matches advertised in reception!
We put up with that as there was no way we could watch the English Thompson reps each evening. It was bad enough hearing them around the pool every day. On the whole the hotel was excellent, and the Spanish staff couldn't have been better but I wish I had read these reports or someone at Thompson had told us what we would expect in regards to the age bracket normally found at this hotel.

Apr 2006, Miss L Peach

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time at the hotel. It was spacious and clean, quiet and relaxing. The rooms are great, cool and clean, with lots of storage space, a mini bar/fridge with a small table and chairs and a sunny terrace/balcony.
The food was really good - lots of British food but also local dishes, and there was lots of choice. The staff in the restaurant especially were really friendly and helpful and all spoke good English.
The pools were really nice - the one which is lower down is much quieter and away from the entertainment, so you have a choice as to whether you want the lively area or the peaceful one. We didn't bother with the entertainment, not really our thing, but overall the reps were really good, they were there every day. We didn't bother with the tours, either, but hired a car (through the reps for 35 euros) and managed to see all the sights in one day. It suited us better, and it was a lot cheaper and easier. We would recommend that to anyone going.
The ages of the clientele was quite mixed. Most people were middle-aged or retired, it must be said, but there were some younger couples like us who wanted a peaceful, quiet holiday just reading and relaxing. The beach directly by the hotel isn't great, but there is a nice sandy beach 5 - 10 minutes walk away, with lovely clear water and lots of fish if you want to snorkel.
I don't think the previous poor reviews are at all justified - we had a great holiday and would definitely go back.

Having just read the previous poor...

Mar 2006, Mrs E Mee

Having just read the previous poor review from a guest who also stayed at this hotel in Dec 2005 I felt compelled to submit this review. My husband and I stayed at this hotel for a week at the beginning of December and I would gladly have stayed longer. We had an extremely nice ground floor room overlooking the pool, which was kept spotlessly clean by our very friendly maid.
On arrival we noted that the beds were quite firm and requested mattress toppers which were delivered within 20 minutes and the maid had the beds stripped and remade in no time - these toppers made all the difference comfort wise.
All of the staff in the hotel were always pleasant, friendly and helpful and the Thomson entertainment team worked hard to try and make sure everyone enjoyed themselves. There are two swimming pools and the daily fun and games only take place around one of them, if this isn't your scene you can always go to the other pool.
The food in the restaurant was fine with plenty of choice and we found the waiters all friendly and hard working.
We would certainly return to the Coronas Playa.

Jan 2006, Mrs K Dale

We decided we wanted to get away from the abysmal English weather for Christmas. We found a great deal with Thomson to Lanzarote because we booked early.
We got there and I can't fault a single second. From the great welcome, the exciting and vast range of excursions to the dedicated entertainment team and the tasty Christmas dinner.
It was such a enjoyable and relaxing holiday. I felt like I came back a whole new person.

If you are looking for a four-star...
1 / 10
Jan 2006, Mr C Orr

If you are looking for a four-star quality hotel with the standards and facilities you would expect from this rating, look further than this hotel. I have no idea what aspect the inspectors considered suitable in their scoring to award this accolade. In almost every respect from food, service, beds, bedding and appearance, this place is at best a 2-3 star location.
The hotel is a fading star in the modern hotel landscape. It appears to have been built when concrete was fashionable, and when the facilities would have been so good, that guests would never venture away from the complex.
As it is, the appearance from the sea front is reminiscent of a WW2 armed pill-box and is far from attractive or welcoming. From the main road the reception is compact and marble lined, and on first appearance the staff are warm and welcoming. Only when they have checked you in do the antenna first start to quiver. When is the last time that you checked in to a 4 star hotel and then had to return to reception (and pay a deposit!) for the TV remote control, security key and towels?
Unfortunately, while there the weather was poor and the rain caused frequent power cuts. The hotel does have back-up power, though this is restricted to emergency lighting and the main admin centre. The attitude of staff is a shrug of the shoulders and a “it happens” response. This unfortunately is their stock answer to all comments and complaints. From the rock-hard beds, ridiculous pillows, threadbare linen, lack of hot water (every day!!), electronic door locks that don’t work, broken gym equipment, and truly, appallingly slow service at all of their (well staffed) bars, the attitude is the same. I won’t dwell on the evening “entertainment”, though if you enjoy amateur night out at your local club, you will be quite happy.
Another real thorn in the flesh is the canteen. I certainly would not glorify the place with a restaurant title as it is far from that. Every meal is a self-service buffet, with waiting staff on hand to sell you drinks and (eventually) clear your plates. While the place is pleasant enough, the background music is constantly added to by the steady addition of the sound of clattering plates, cutlery and glasses as each waiter apparently takes the opportunity to audition for the worst juggler in the world, with the subsequent breakages that ensue. This is further evidenced by the chipped plates and glasses that account for the majority of the stock.
The food itself appears to be driven by Thomson’s and geared to a palate devoid of any sense of taste. The breakfasts are aimed at traditional “full-English” and other meals are an interesting mixture of English basics with a Spanish twist. More often than not the food is cold, bland and unappetising. The gala meals are basically the same with more garnish and the staff dressed up differently.
One word on the staffs Mrs Doyle look-alike who feverishly prowls the canteen with her eyes set on “cheering up” the more elderly patrons and giving them a quick snog. Why? If you had this demented harpy wandering your local favourite eating house, you would very quickly have her put in to care.
There are some gems on the staff that make the rest of them look truly as poor as they are. The place is kept clean by the very pleasant cleaning crew, and two of the waiting staff know what they are there for.
As it was, we paid a premium price for a very low standard hotel that failed on most of the basic levels of customer care or service. The hotels Monkey Bar waiter, with a glower for everyone and the stress of serving up to four customers at a time etched on every line on his forehead, sums this place up: Keep you waiting, make you think they are doing you a favour and then sticking you with a 4-star bill for a mediocre service.
Do not go.
