Nice quiet resort and clean spacious...

Aug 2008, Mrs N Goddard

Nice quiet resort and clean spacious apartments. Pretty, well-maintained gardens and a bonus having two swimming pools (although the 'quiet' pool seemed to be occupied by three poorly behaved german children all day). Seafront location is spot on but be careful if you choose to swim when it is rough (when the Meletemi wind is blowing) - due to pebbles and rocks in the waves is is too dangerous. Nice village location (goats and donkeys within 2 mins walk)
Clientele were a mix of British, German, Dutch, Scandinavian and Eastern European/Russian. It was amusing as the Russians seemed to be holidaying with their trophy (Thai?) wives. They had to converse in poor English as the wives could not speak Russian and they could not speak the language of their wives. No problems with getting sunbeds at all (surprising for August).
Ate in the restaurant once it was fine. Apartments are geared towards half-board customers (other nationalities). Service in the bar was better for half-board guests (presumably because they were recognised by staff.
Nice restaurants on the beach strip - we think that 'the wave' is probably the best. Central supermarket sells most things and there are minimarkets within 5 mins walk.
You really do need a hire car to make the best of this location. Holiday Autos are great, they deliver to the apartments and even gave us an extra day free (prebooked in UK). I can recommend using the hire care to visit Elafonissi, Falasarna and Paleochora. if you go to Paleochora take the coast road west from the resort and you will find some idyllic virtually deserted small beaches.
Chania is fantastic, driving in is easy once you realise that it is a grid system. Just follow signs to parking and there are several good underground car parks (with toilets) that always seem to have spaces.
If you love beaches take time to visit the Akrotiri Peninsula. The cove beaches at Stavros (where Zorba the Greek was filmed) and Kalathas are fantastic. The German war cemetery at Maleme and the Allied one at Souda Bay are worth a visit. * Be warned, the main road on the Souda Bay side of the Akrotiri peninsula has a heavy traffic police presence. Be caareful with your speed and make sure that you obey the traffic lights at the main junctions (we saw a lot a hire cars being pulled over when we were out and about).
Can't really fault the location or the apartments only problem is Kosmar. Manager was so annoyed with the rep that all Kosmar customers were handed a photocopied sheet on checkout urging us to book with Thomas Cook next year as they wished to cut down their apartment allocation with Kosmar. For us, the XL flights were not the best we have ever had and the Kosmar rep was up to the unbelieveably low standards that they normally are. She insisted that we check out at 10am, although the manager checked his booking sheet and told us that midday would be fine (everybody on our flight checked out at midday and the rep threw a tantrum)

Jan 2008, Mr M Fox

Have stayed at the Malame Mare for the last two years, cannot fault it. Rooms spotless and rooms cleaned every day apart from Sunday. Staff very friendly and couldn't do enough for you. Beach facing the apartments are pebbly but clean and beautiful view. It's never packed and can always get a lounger.
If you want a chilled out holiday Malame is for you. Plenty of good tavernas, our favourite the Oeste is on the corner, but they are all of a decent standard and serve good food.

Aug 2007, Miss S Rymill

After much deliberation about which part of island to visit we got last minute deal with Kosmar through agent called voyager travel direct, who I must say was extremely helpful in the booking process. Travelled with xl airlines which were ok but pretty basic.
Maleme Mare apartments are situated on the sea front in a quiet resort which is what we wanted. Mainly families and couples. We had a sea view which was great but not all the apartments face this way.
Accommodation was great, we had a studio, and cleaners came in every day except Sunday. Pool clean and reasonable size. We hired a car to explore the south of Island but a lot of families seemed content to hang around by pool all day.
Quite windy on this side of island so airbeds not recommended for children. We saw one flying out to sea with the rescue people searching to see if anyone had fallen off it.
Eating out, there is a selection of good tavernas along the seafront, would recommend taverna restaurant which did great food and good value, also opposite you can get a great steak but more expensive.
We were told that the nearest large town was in walking distance but having tried this I wouldn't recommend it. There are regular bus services there though which are good value if you fancy a bit of shopping.
Generally very happy with Maleme Mare if you want a quiet resort for the family or a base to explore the island. Great view of the mountains!

The hotel was great! Nice and small...

May 2007, Miss S Mercer

The hotel was great! Nice and small and a friendly atmosphere.
We went when it was before school holidays so nice and quiet around the pool with only a few children (toddlers) and the German children.
The hotel had two nice pools, the smaller of which was a bit quieter for sunbeds. The bar staff were friendly and drinks reasonably priced, they also had a great bar snack menu.
Rooms were clean and tidy and were cleaned daily. Ours had a small two ring hob and a fridge but plenty of pans, plates and cutlery (we even managed to make toast on the hob). We only had one small power cut the first night we were there.
The resort of Maleme itself was quiet. It had a few supermarkets, the best of which was reached by the main road or via a smaller road down the side of the hotel and up a road next to the supermarket. It has a lovely little hand crafted pottery shop and the odd souvenir shop.
A selection of restaurants and a few bars which were sufficient for any holiday. We only ate out once as we were on a cheap holiday, but the food came highly recommended to us by the people staying in the next room to us (who go every year).
We ate at The Wave which was a short stroll along the beach, very friendly staff and great food. The nearby resort of Platanis has a greater selection of restaurants and is only a short taxi or bus ride away.
We never really ventured out of the resort for food and drink as the hotel had plenty to offer in the form of its own bar (and with the World Cup on a big screen TV we didn't want to leave).
Kosmar had a great selection of excursions. We went on a dolphin one, where we went to a gorgeous white sandy beach (Elafonissi Lagoon) and on a short boat trip to look for dolphins. We also went on a night time trip to Souda Bay War Cemetery and to the main town of Chania.
This was a great trip and had free time to shop/eat/take in the sights in Chania before returning home. We also booked a trip to another beach (known as pirates lagoon, can't remember the Crete name), however the coach never picked us up. We got our money back from Kosmar, something to do with the tour operators having us down at the wrong hotel.
We really enjoyed the peacefulness of the holiday and the quiet resort, we are even booking to go back again this year. I would highly recommend it to anybody who wants a nice relaxing holiday.

The Maleme Mare Hotel is situated at...

Mar 2007, Mr W P Eaton

The Maleme Mare Hotel is situated at the end of a row of hotels and is superb for a family group.
You will not be troubled by late night music as the area is aimed at families with younger children.
There are plenty of places to eat within a few hundred yards. The local supermarkets are a maximum five minute walk away, with the nearest just round the corner. This one is the cheapest for all those pool toys.
It’s always best to buy your beer and kids drinks from here and store it in your fridge as you will save a great deal of money.
All the hotels are very friendly and you can just pop in to their pools as well.
The sea is just a few yards away, which is beautifully clear. The Maleme Mare has two pools which are both suitable for children of all ages with a baby pool.
The food at the hotel is good and reasonable priced.
The road trains run from Maleme just a few yards from the hotel and for the kids they take you to the water park on Fridays. It is cheaper to catch the train as entry fee to the park is included.
As the hotel is by the beach, please be aware of the sea breeze as this may lull you into thinking the temperature is not that hot, even though it can be well into the forty's, I was there in late August early September.
If you fancy hiring a car there is a local firm just a few hundred yards away. At the other end of Maleme there is break water which is good to let the kids go snorkelling.

The apartments were great, clean and tidy. The maids cleaned every day apart from Sunday. It is right next to the beach, which is mainly pebble this is a good thing as you don't end up bringing most of the beach back with you to your room.
The resort has about 10 places to eat, the ones we liked the best were Mike's and The Albatross, great food and reasonable prices. The Mythos bar on the beach front is great, it looks a bit up market but it is great and they gave us free nibbles with our drinks. We went on one of the train rides, this was a good day out and well worth the money. We took the trip up into the mountains it was 15 Euros for adults and the whole trip was about 4 hours.
We also went on a trip with Kosmar round Scouda Bay, this was a very good trip, the only down side is they do the trips with a Danish tour company and there wasn't an English speaking rep so we didn't get any English commentary. They spoke a little English, so we did know when they served lunch. Overall a great holiday and a great side of Crete.
