All the reviews pre May 2011 say how great the hotel is. I can not see how a hotel can change in such a short space of time. I have returned today after a Spa Weekend and all I can say is the service was beyond words. I have never experienced such a lack of cutomer service. The hotel has the facilities to be a fantastic resort but the staff bring it down on every level. took 1 hour to check in then was told to come back as the rooms are not ready. Looked for the bar, this was closed until further notice. Then found the restaurant and had a spot of lunch (no compalaints) then went back to collect our keys and with 5 rooms not one door worked and one room it took 4 trips back to reception before they could get the keys right. Spa treatment was cut short as therapist was running late so cut time off my booking. Pool was far from relaxing as was full of screaming children the Jacuzzi was not working and the showers were cold and the drain full of hair. No lockers available to secure belongings and later that night went to dinner and they did not have our booking and when they finally could seat us they informed us it was buffet only however we had pre arranged an up grade to the alacarte menu. So we agreed to the buffet only to find out most of the dishes were finished and there was no vegitarian meal for 2 of our guests so they had soup and a side salad for their evening meal but it was still £15 each as it was a set price. Evening was a disaster as the only place to get a drink was in the dirty spike bar with all the golfers from the course that day and felt very overdressed and uncomfortable in our evening wear
- Advice: Do not book ntil the hotel is fully open and fully staffed

A great hotel in Essex. The Spa was fabulous a welcome treat for me whilst my husband played golf here.
The room was of good quality and we slept like logs in the comfortable beds.
Had dinner in the Brassarie which was fabulous and inexpensive at £16.00 for 3 courses.
Would recommend this to anyone. Ideally for the guys to have a golf break while the girls relax in the Spa.

We have just returned (today) from a one night break at Five lakes for a friends 50th. Thankfully it was only a one night stay as our list of complaints would have just become ridiculous.
At first the hotel looked lovely - despite the ongoing refurb which could be overlooked. However once we got to our rooms we were sorely disappointed.
For a break that had cost us £185 for the night, we expected more than stains all over the carpet, mould across the walls/ceiling in the bathroom, a plug with all loose wires and holes in the doors!!
We didnt ask to get moved as it was only one night, and we had booked into a block in the "village" with a group of friends and did not want to get moved miles away. The bed in fairness was lovely and comfortable and the view was very pretty.
Myself and the other women in the group had all booked into the spa for various treatments, we were told that we would all have robes in our executive suites. We didnt! in fact, hardly anyone had robes as there were none left! The girls working in the spa were very nice and apologetic, however that does not make up for the fact i had to sit and wait in the spa reception fully clothed and not be able to relax and unwind. Eventually at 5.15pm (it closes at 6.30), some robes were found and given out - i was not even offered one!!!
When going back to our rooms that night, we ended up having to use our mobile phones to be able to see what we were doing as there were no bulbs in the outside light sockets! we had some elderly people in our party, and there was a step up to the door, i can just imagine what wouldve happened if they had tripped.
On departure we spoke to the manager on duty who, when sitting us in the bar to talk, casually walked over a big puddle of water that had been spilt on the bar floor! I pointed this out to him and he said that he hadnt noticed! on the way out, he nearly walked over it again, until he thought better of it. He then proceded to move a stand with a Bar sign over the top of it!
When speaking to the manager he just shrugged and said that if we had told him we were unhappy with the room he would have moved us. My reply was "why put someone in there in the first place?"
All in all this is a very poorly run hotel. There is much work needed to get it to the standard that it is being advertising. Spa and restaurant were ok, but certainly would not recommend spending £185 on ONE night! much better places around. As i have been typing this, my partner has been trying to call them to get the number for ABhotels, who owns them. surprise surprise, no one is answering the phone! perhaps they are dealing with more complaints! out of the 7 rooms in our block - 5 complained! As we were leaving another couple were at reception, asking to move due to fleas in their room!
Safe yourself the headache and money! take note of the bad reviews!
