A shocking one night stay. Do not be deceived by the beautiful surroundings! I booked a suite in this hotel via email. I confirmed with my credit card. On arrival they had not made the reservation for us. They said they didn't receive my email. They found us a room,... more

Cornish Georgian Country House
We have recently returned from a 3 day stay at the Rose in Vale Hotel. Beautiful setting, wonderful dinners and charming hosts. Thoroughly enjoyable experience. There are a variety of different rooms available to suit different budgets. The evening meals were outstanding and the menu changes each night. Very sensibly priced wine list. Hotel pool is heated and there is also a hot tub. We flew to Newquay and then took a taxi - a very expensive experience which can be avoided by using the local buses. The hotel is just outside Mithian and the local buses run an excellent service to Truro, Newquay and further afield. Beautiful beach just 1.5 miles away at St Agnes. If you want a relaxing, stress free holiday in Cornwall, this hotel is to be recommended.
Excellent, freindly service in a stunning location
James, Sarah and their freindly staff provided a warm, but professional welcome. My room was very comfortable and the hotel's resturant and lounges are excellent. One of the best things about Rose-in-vale is the lovely grounds, where a babbling brook provides a wonderful focus as you take an evening stroll. Rob G
don't take children!!
stayed one night in may for our mum and dad's 40th wedding anniversary we booked four rooms so that all the family could go. Prior to booking we sent emails and contacted them direct regarding taking our children who are 6 and3 as we wanted to make sure that they would be catered for and that it wouldn't be a problem with other residents, with all our queries answered we went ahead and booked, big mistake our children were well behaved but we were made to feel very uncomfortable and the children were shouted at by the owner numerous times. we had payed a small fortune for one nights stay and ended up going to the local pub for the evening as they even moaned when we sang happy anniversary to my parents and tried to put us in the so-called library which was a cold rom with no comfy seating. All in all very disappointing they should of not been so money grabbing and turned our booking down when we spoke to them prior to our booking. Please avoid this place at all costs!!
Never again
Just had a really disappointing stay at this hotel. It looked so lovely on the website and promised a luxurious stay (at least from the price) but the excitement was left at the door. Dodgy steps at the entrance, faded decor, lack of presentation and service by the proprietors - all went to making the stay far from special. A hot tub and cold swimming pool does not make up for the other failings! We don't often stay in hotels, preferring B&Bs, and I can now see why. If you're extremelly laid back, with low expectations and a big wallet then this hotel is in a lovely location and will probably do you. However, in my opinion a full modernisation or a significant reduction in price is definitely needed.
Overpriced & Damp
We stayed at this hotel due to friends having there wedding reception there. What can I say, for £300 for 2 nights for 2 people was overpriced, the rooms smelt damp and Musty, the wallpaper was peeling off the walls. We booked a Kingsize room, which was 2 beds pushed together with a manky blanket over the top, the heating didn't work either!!! They turned the hot water off at 11am Saturday, not very handy when the wedding was starting at 1!!! When we complained we got told to wait an hour, and that 'the party' had used 900 liters of water. The owners were just plain rude, walking round looking dirty, shirt hanging out, etc. They decided on the last day that we all had to have breakfast by 9.15, even though it stated 9.45 in the details and we also had to check out at 10.30am because he had people in for lunch!!! He was also unwillingly to open the bar till 12, Infact when we quizzed him on the lack if hot water and the bar, he shut everything down and stormed off!!! Overall, I'd never recommend this hotel/B&B to anyone; People had much better accommodation staying in St Agnes for 1/4 of the price!!! I’d also recommend that the owners perhaps look at a different trade!!!

The Bride & Groom booked the hotel for exclusive use. Terms were agreed with our customers as to the opening times for the bar (11:30 pm on Saturday night) and for a breakfast for all of their guests together at 9:15 on Sunday morning. This was the wish of the Bride and Groom for their Wedding. We finished serving drinks at 12:15 am. We offer exclusive use Weddings not all night raves. The person did not like the arrangements made by the Bride and Groom for their Wedding and started moaning to me at 1am in the morning, having been drinking all evening. I was not prepared to discuss the matter with him under these circumstances. The person told me that he expected heating to be run 24 hours a day. Sorry we do not do this. At all of our weddings and other functions our boilers have stopped mid morning and the 900 litres of hot water in our tanks has been more than enough for everyone to date, without exception. Most people shower or bath before breakfast even if they are departing the hotel at 12:00. When these guests made us aware of the problem we immediately turned the boilers back on. I believe that we all have an environmental duty to consume as little as possible and to emit as little as possible. Here in Cornwall most people adopt these principals to help us preserve our lovely environment. This is a difficult issue. I am always being told that we should act and run our business in an environmental manner. For this reason we recycle our cardboard, paper and glass, send our edible waste to a local farm and grow some of our own vegetables. We also purchase local produce to keep the food miles to a minimum. We also don’t run our boilers needlessly, which in this case caused a problem. We ask guests to help us for example by trying to use towels for more than one day. I explained this to this person who just dismissed it as “irrelevant”, I did not then and still do not now, think that it is. This caused a fundamental impasse, and has led to this person making a number of personal insults to me at the time and on this website. At the time of writing there have been floods across large parts of the UK. I would like to ask a question, should we all stick our heads in the sand as treat this as yet another fluke, or should we all accept that the changing climate is as a consequence of the actions of mankind and that we should be environmentally responsible? Either way we will continue to run our lovely hotel in an environmental manner. The boilers will not be run 24/7 and will continue go off at 10:00 am over the summer months, but we will gladly turn them on if required. As we did in this instance.

Overpriced, unhelpful owners and generally not worth the money
We have just returned from a wedding in Cornwall where most of the guests stayed here and also the evening reception. On the first night we returned from the local pub (great food there) at just before 11pm and asked the owner if we could have a drink. We were told we could have a quick one but he had a late night the next night! - this would be the wedding reception that we were all going too. Not a good start. On the day of the wedding we went to have a shower at 11.30am, an hour and a half before the wedding and there was no hot water. On phoning the owner we were told that he had turned the boilers off at 10am. After a number of discussions about this with him during the stay we were simply told that he had not had a problem before and we should have had a shower and got ready before breakfast! Then we could have waited 4 hours dressed up. Breakfast is also hit and miss with tiny portions of fish and one poached egg if you choose this option. the continental breakfast is not recommended with solid croissants that are impossible to eat! Al is all the attitude of the owner and his wife is appaulling (the other staff, however are lovely). For the price of the room you would expect a nice bathroom but it is an extremely old fashioned one. From visiting the area now I would recommend the local b&bs at a fraction of the price.
Overpriced and not for young families
We have just returned from staying here for two nights and had booked three rooms one of which was to accomodate our two children and their grandmother. The rooms were OK but looked tired, especially the bathrooms. The food was adequate but there was a disppointing choice for the price - Rib of Beef was mostly fat, table service was polite but not skilled, and wine choice limited. The general clients when we were there seemed to be older people who looked comfortable and happy but we felt unwelcome with children - our children were 7 and 5 years old and well behaved. The owners wife complimented us on our childrens behaviour and 10 minutes later the owner told us that if our children were going to stay up with us in the lounge then they would have to behave as he wanted his other guests to enjoy their evening!! This did not make us feel valued customers and was unnecessary. Glad to leave - cost us over £1000 - and would not stay there again - they've much to do if they want young families or better to be honest and say children under a certain age NOT welcome.
Management response from RoseinVale 21 Jun 2007

When these guests booked it was made clear that children would have to eat early which they accepted. Although they did start early they finished late. After this the children came into the bar and lounge and stayed until 10:30pm. The children were well behaved but there was a general feeling amongst others that children of 5 and 7 years old should not be in the bar/lounge at 10:30 pm. Ribs of Beef do contain fat no matter where you eat ! In terms of prices. Our prices are equal or below those of other similar hotels in Cornwall. The charges are on our Website, agreed with guests before booking, confirmed in writing and again at check-in. They should not, therefore be a surprise upon check-out. We are sorry these guests did not enjoy their time here. Following their stay we agree with them that the Rose in Vale is not a good place for young children if they want to stay up late. Since this experience we have now decided not to accept children under 12 years of age.

Definitely improving
We have just spent two very comfortable nights here (but were mindful of the previous criticisms). There clearly have been many improvements over the past year since the very affable new owner took over. From a decor point of view there is still much to do but it is obvious the owners are listening to past complaints and doing something about it. (For example, the entrance into the dining room is no longer in THAT corridor! And the corridors have all been redecorated and carpeted). Potentially this could be a delightful place to stay for a quiet retreat. The building and grounds are peaceful and pretty. Our bedroom/bathroom was very comfortable, clean and again redecorated and recarpeted. The standard of cooking has also greatly improved as they have just been awarded an AA Rosette. The food lived up to this too. It was unpretentious but beautifully prepared and presented. The staff were willing to serve but a little shy at times and could do with some professional training for a hotel aiming to raise its standards. That said we have stayed in many a hotel, complete with Rosettes, price tags and staff who don't know the meaning of service, and Rose in Vale was a welcome improvement on these. We would stay there again and will watch with interest any future reviews. For a 3 star hotel it delivered what it promised.
Overpriced and over-hyped
We were really looking forward to staying here as the website and brochure really talked the hotel up, and we have stayed in some superb hotels in Cornwall previously. However, our experience here did not match up to what we expected and for the high price of the accomodation we felt very disappointed. We had a standard room, which had a very small window from which we could hardly see anything but the roof. The bed was very hard, the shower room fan did not work (there was no bath), and the furniture was nothing special. The evening meal was generally good but the dessert menu was limited and the food uninspiring. The evening waiting staff were untidy and unskilled. The more formal areas of the garden were neglected, being weedy and poor. The dining room corridor was still shabby (as mentioned by an earlier reviewer). All minor items in their own way but contributing to a 'not value for money' feeling. The costs of running a hotel of this sort were mentioned by another former reviewer and this was also mentioned to me. Management, perhaps, need to look at what guests are getting for their hard earned money, and would it be acceptable to themselves if they were in the same position.
Faultless stay. Excellent service, stunning hotel.
We stayed in the recently refurbished Rose Suite for our 10th wedding anniversary. We only stayed the 1 night but it was perfect in every detail. From the moment we checked in, we were made to feel welcome by the freindly receptionist. Quickly checked in and shown to our suite, we were told if we wanted to take a bath, we would need to allow 20 minutes to fill it and that we would understand when we saw the bath. I have never seen such a huge bath, it actually took a little longer than 20 minutes to fill, more like 30 but it was totally worth the wait - A double seated spa bath - Perfect. The double walk in shower too was excellent. Two rainfall shower heads and 12 massaging jets in the side of the shower. Double sinks for simultaneous tooth brushing....The bed too was the comfiest hotel bed we have ever slept in. The only extremely small detail that was missing in the room was a full length mirror. We went down for dinner and again had impecable service in both the bar and restaurant. The food had already been descibed to me as excellent by a work collegue, and after tasting it for myself I have to agree, completely faultless. Everything was cooked to perfection and served swiftly without the staff being TOO attentive. (we have eaten in restaurants in the past had staff pearing over our shoulder waiting to swipe our plates as soon as our cuttlery hits the plate.) All in all, a perfect place to spend a special occassion, looking forward to going back for the next anniversary!
