Thomson Spirit Cruise Ship
Formerly Holland America's Nieuw Amsterdam, this elegant, classic cruiseliner brings you 21st century cruising pleasure. It has all the modern facilities you could wish for - from a two storey show lounge to the fantastic health club overlooking the ocean. Hungry? You'll find everything from 24-hour dining to a sophisticated à la carte restaurant for that romantic occasion. Thomson Spirit is the same length and size of ships normally carrying 1500 passengers but she'll take over 200 less. This means more room for you to stretch out on the sundeck, larger cabins, more privacy, more space for fun and games, and even more attention from those obliging staff

On arrival we were allocated a cabin at check in only to find that someone else was already in the cabin. We were allocated another cabin to find this too was already occupied. We were then sent back to the original cabin - due to this confusion one piece of our luggage went missing. We found it ourselves three hours later sitting in a corridor on its own.
The towels in the cabin were a dirty grey colour and thread bare. The porthole window in our cabin was cracked. Our toilet blocked three times in seven days. The hairdryer wouldn’t work so we called reception that sent an electrician. The electrician explained that we needed to put one of the lights on in order to get the hair dryer to work. On closer inspection we found that the wire on the hairdryer had been taped with black tape and obviously connected to another electrical supply to try and correct a fault. We were told the electrician would repair the dryer ASAP. Nothing happened so the following day we reported the dryer again. The electrician re appeared and asked me if I could manage using is as it was. I expressed concerns over using a cable that was live and bound with tape. I was greeted by a rolling of the eyes and a huge sigh. That evening we returned to our cabin to find the toilet was blocked yet again and that the room stunk. Yet again we had no clean towels and our room had not been cleaned for the second day running. We asked to see the head housekeeper but were told she was unavailable by another receptionist, who then started to argue that our complaints had not been logged in the book and so therefore could not be valid. We did not wish to spend our holiday at reception arguing over Thomson’s internal procedures and left to return to a dirty cabin, sp;raying perfume to try and make the air more pleasant. The following day, day 6 of our 7 day holiday, we returned to our cabin to find a bowl of fruit and a bottle of wine and written apology from the Geisha Lee Head Housekeeper. The hairdryer had been repaired. The toilet cleaned and we were given assurances that the room would be cleaned. Sadly this did not occur. Whilst packing to return home we took our cases out from under the bed to find a pile of papers and rubbish left by the previous occupants. We asked again if we could see someone of seniority on a face to face basis. Same response no one was available. We gave up and asked for email addresses instead. We felt we couldn’t do much about our holiday but hoped that we could prevent the next occupants of cabin 834 having the same problems as ourselves.
We have been on several cruises with Cunard, P & O and Thomson. This was the worst service we have ever experienced. Some of the staff, mostly the Eastern Europeans were indifferent to passengers. The food was mediocre. The ports of call were varied, apart from Casablanca, which stood out because it was so appalling. We were docked in a working commercial area which was also a building site. Passengers had to dodge cars, huge lorries and machinery to get to the edge of the docks. Those who stayed on board had the delights of dust and excessive noise from the ‘building site’ where we were docked. Come on Thomson think of your passengers, they are your future! If you continue to treat your customers in this way they won’t return as they have done previously. On our last day we went to collect our cases on the dock at Palma to find that the wheels and handle had been knocked off one case. We asked one of the Thomson reps if they had any forms to report damage and were told ‘I am a singer, I don’t know what your supposed to do'. The end of a nightmare holiday. We will not be Thomson customers again

This is my 2nd time on the thomson spirit and i can honestly say that it was better then the first time. We upgraded to a luxury cabin which was better then the other cabin's we have been in. The staff onboard the thomson spirit was exellent they cleaned our cabin every morning to a high quality and all the other staff onboard was also very pleasant but there was one particular person onboard called spikey who i had met the first time i was on the ship and when i went up 2 high spirit's he shouted "HEY LOOK JASON'S BACK".The entertainment on the ship was fantastic every night onboard the spirit and they had activities going on all day.
IF U LOOKING 2 BOOK A CRUISE GO ON THE THOMSON SPIRIT IT'S AMAZING!!!!!!!!

We sailed on the 30th May on the Spirit, our 3rd Thomson cruise and the second time on the Spirit. the cruise itself was superb, the staff on the ship are absolutely faultless, and go out of their way to ensure you enjoy yourselves. Elvis Parsley remembered us from the Destiny last year, and greeted us with "Welcome Home"! Both He and Bert, our dinner waiters looked after us superbly.
The entertainment was excellent again. Thomson keep finding these talented youngsters and have also managed to keep hold of Daniel - this guy has got a brilliant voice!
The vibration? - yes it is still there! - despite all the refits! - did it bother us? - only when my mrs laughed at my belly jiggling up and down when we were sunbathing! Seriously - you get used to it very quickly, and it soon became unnoticeable.
Ports of Call
Villefranche - lovely little place, but having never been to Monte Carlo, we decided to head into there. Because it was a Sunday, the train timetable was quite limited, so we decided to get the bus, which took about 40 minutes. The driver must have thought he was driving in the previous Sundays Grand Prix because he "flew" along the coast road, with all its sharp corners - what a nutter!. But we got there in one piece, and were dropped off at the stop just above the gardens leading down into Casino Square. You could "feel" the money in that place! We stopped for a cool beer and a glass of wine in the Cafe de Paris and watched the world go by, had a walk around the Casino, then around the GP circuit and the Harbour, then back to the railway station and made our way back to the ship. Really enjoyable day out.
Livorno - always intended this to be a quiet day in between two busy ones, but the rain helped to make sure of that. Had a quick walk around the port - decided we should have done an excursion after all and then headed back to the ship, for a quiz and relaxing day. When the trips came back they all said it had been a poor day because unbeknowns to us - it was a bank holiday and nothing - or at least very little was open - glad we didnt do an excursion after all!!
Civvitavechia - this was the one we had been waiting for, as due to drunken revelry on our last Spirit cruise, we missed Rome, so here we were. Shuttle bus to the port gate and then a 10 minute walk along the front and we arrived at the Railway station. Return to Rome Terminii (Central Station) was 9 euros, added another 13 euros for the open top "hop on hop off" bus tour around Rome.. It was light drizzling when we left the Port, but luckily as we arrived in Rome the clouds parted and it turned into a really nice warm sunny day. Onto the bus trip and headed off around Rome, and stopped off at the Vatican, Trevi fountain and a couple of the other places. What I noticed most of all, was that almost every building in the city is a work of art, everyting so ornate! Will definitely do a city break here one day - hopefully for the rugby!! When we eventually got back to the ship, we spoke to our Scottish friends, Margaret and Roger, who went on the bus trip to Rome, and they had spent 4 hours stuck in traffic getting in and out of the City due to the G8 World Food Conference in Rome. - I rubbed it in all week after that - Roger was not amused! He had paid treble the price and had half the day on a bus!! Sorry Rog. Hopefully you managed to get a refund! We found out that most people had complained and were refunded part of their excursion cost because the conference must have been know about!- Note for all others doing these trips - if it goes wrong you CAN get a refund!
Olbia, Sardinia and Mahon in Menorca were our last two stops. We spent the day in both of these ports and had really nice walks around the towns, stopped for a few relaxing beers - Gail even had a pint of wine and lemonade - because the bar had run out of long glasses! Both Ports were very picturesque, and the sail into Mahon is an experience on its own, as was sailing out of Olbia!
All in all we had a wonderful cruise, helped not least of all by the lovely people we met on our trip including - Isobel and Frank (Scotland), Margaret and Roger from Edinburgh, Pat and Noel from West Wales and June and Eddy from Sunderland. You never know we may meet on another cruise one day soon - because this is definitely not our last!!

We did a cruise and stay, the cruise 1st.... FANTASTIC, the staff couldnt do enough for you, the cabin was clean & comfortable, we did actually choose an inside cabin and im thankful we did, the weather was hothot, so it was a little cooler for us, the food was great and plentiful, if i had to be really picky the snacks was repetative, hotdogs & hamburgers but eh the high teas are to die for yumyum cakes biscuits and cream.
The second week we stayed at the LE VANTE in Cala Bona and it was great too staff food rooms pool and of course adults only what could a couple without kids want. A little expensive for drinks in the hotel itself but there are plenty of bars knocking around that are cheaper Try THE LONDON INN just round the corner. Entertainment too on both the cruise and hotel was well above what i expected.

just returned from our first ever cruise, a little apprehensive to start but soon settled into the swing of things. everything about the holiday was superb from the moment we arrived at cardiff airport. the organisation was faultless and the service on board was absolutely brilliant. all the staff from bottom to top were great and could not do enough for you. the food was unbelievable, with enough choices to satisfy anyone. the on board entertainment went on all day until late into the night and was all of a very high standard and all the excursions were well thought out to give a great choice of visits at every port of call. would certainly use this particular ship again and if the standard of this one is anything to go by, any other thomson cruise.

Me and my family have just come back from a holiday on the destiny and we didnt like it as much as the spirit we were on the year before.
First of all the staff aboard the destiny wern't as good as the staff on the spirit. The bedrooms on the destiny were smaller then my 16 yr olds room, which i found was hard to cope with because we had 4 people in the room. The food on the ship was ok but on the first night we got there my son was bed with the food. The entertanment was high quality every night and even in the other lounge they did the popular gameshows.
SO IF YOU R LOOKING TO BOOK A CRUISE DONT BOOK ON THE DESTINY WAS NOT VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife had an acident second day of cruise due to bad weather, the ships Dr. when he finaly arrived was very abrupt, come on get up im very busy,my wife was laying amongst broken glass on the cabin floor, she had a dislocated shoulder ,a broken shoulder a broken arm and damaged leg.We had to wait three days before we docked in HELSINKI to get treatment ,the only help we got from the ship was a wheelchair and
painkillers. We had to pay our own fare by taxi to the clinic and they even an old woman
with us for treatment who promtly informed that she had no money for taxi fares.
On disembarkation we had to vacate our cabin by 11am at 4.30PM we noticed strange
faces entering the restruant,on going to gangplank we found for the next cruise coming aboard. When we finaly disembarked no help could be found to help with our overnight
luggage wheelchair and walking sticks, the whole disembarkation was a total mess,
imagine every one has left the cabins after a couple of hours think of the queues for
toilets, due to her injuries my could not dress or undress herself but Icouldnt take her
into the puplic facilities. THOMSONS say that the did all they had to do end of matter

After much debate whether to cruise for the first time - we booked a late deal for the Spirit, having been a recommendation - and what a good choice for starters! If you are brave and willing to try for late/last minute deals, the savings were terrific!
First of all, let's deal with the vibrating. Yes, this was pretty bad, but not all the time, by any means - however, we heard that the ship is due for an engine refit in October, so hopefully this will sort it.
From the moment we went on the ship, we were impressed. We were not allowed on the ship at all until we'd cleansed our hands using the gel at the bottom of the steps, and also you had to cleanse your hands every time you went to the dining room. There was someone on duty at all times to ensure this, and to ensure that the risk of ill health was minimal. Everywhere on the ship was so clean and well kept.
The crew were always cheerful and polite, with a lovely sense of humour. Nothing was too much trouble. Our cabin was very spacious and our maid most helpful. Towels were changed at least twice each day. The Lido Restaurant - self service buffet - had a good choice of food, nicely presented. Tea and coffee and water were at no extra cost, but soft drinks/alcoholic drinks were at a reasonable charge.
We ate in the Compass Rose Restaurant in the evenings - 5 course dinner plus tea/coffee. You would easily pay £40 plus per head for the quality of each meal. House wine (very nice) was £9.95 per bottle. The service here was superb. There were many "high jinks" along with the excellent service - in that most evenings, at least one of the waiters/stewards or even Head Chef would come and sing to us. We even had Elvis (and very good he was too!) Birthdays and Anniversaries were celebrated with song and cake - everyone was made to feel special.
Entertainment each evening in the Broadway Theatre was absolutely thrilling. What energy the show team had - it was like going to a mini West End production each night. Well done, them! There were activities through the day for any who wanted to take part.
We thoroughly enjoyed Ville Franche - for Monte Carlo, but found the next port of Livorno very ugly indeed. If you plan to go to Florence from here, take the bus (situated in the Plaza Grande) - don't try for the train - the station was a long way from the centre, and when we got there, there was a strike on! We heard that in Pisa, apart from the Tower and the Church - that's it, whilst Florence has much to offer. Excursions are very expensive, and you can easily do many trips by yourself, or chum up with someone else who wants to go.
Cittavechia was a better port for Rome. If you are brave, get the train to St Peter's Square and then get the "hop on hop off" bus tour - it'll cost you about half the cost of the excursion.
Next stop - Olbia, Sardinia. A lovely little town. We didn't see anything else of the island, but heard from others how lovely it is. It seems to be mainly sight seeing here of the countryside and beaches.
Next port - Mahon, Menorca. A really lovely approach to this port -it seemed that just about everyone on the ship was out on deck watching. Last port - back to Palma and a nice day looking round this lovely city.
We will definitely cruise again - and hopefully on the Spirit. It is such a friendly ship - everyone so courteous and happy - it was a great holiday.

Tenpin, one of the regular conributers to the Cruise Forum suggested I put this as a review, (It was submitted in response to a query about this year's Fire and Ice Cruise).
Fire and Ice is a good cruise - we were lucky to get good weather in Iceland although it poured in Norway and was indifferent in Torshavn. We were lucky enough to see dolphins from the ship as it sailed along the Icelandic coast.
I did not go on any organised excursions; I prefer to do my own thing with the help of a Lonely Planet guidebook. Local tourist office staff usually greeted the ship at each port and gave out free street maps and other tourist leaflets.
Torshavn - I really enjoyed walking around the town. Those who did go on orgainised excursions spoke highly of the Vestmanna Cliffs walk although some found it hard going. Appropriate footwear is required.
Reykjavik - I arranged an independent trip to the Blue Lagoon with the local bus company having previously researched it online. They picked me up from the ship. We got longer in the Blue Lagoon than those on the organised excursion and it was cheaper. The bus took us back to the city centre where we had a couple of hours prior to getting the ship's shuttle bus back as the quay was about 45 minutes walk from the city centre.
Isafjord - a small town which is the centre of the remote West Fjords region. Scenery is superb - I was just happy to walk as there are plenty of walking paths - I went to Tungudalur beyond the head of the fjord.
Akuyeyri - a larger town at the head of a long fjord. At the tourist office, we met up with some fellow passengers who were keen to explore so ended up sharing an eight person taxi which took us to Godafoss waterfall and the Lake Myvatn volcanic area - at a considerably lower price per head than the organised excursion. This was the highlight of the trip.
Flam - I have been here on three cruises - it is better when there is only one cruise ship in as two result in long queues and a more restrictive choice of trains on the Flam railway - the railway is expensive but is worth the money. We did the Norway in a Nutshell round trip to Voss by ferry and bus, back by train - again expensive - tickets from tourist information. The railway can be done as part of an even more expensive organised excursion but in one direction only. The sail out of Flam, which is approximately 5 hours sailing from the open sea, is absolutely stunning but unfortunatley on this occasion, the departure time and the weather ruled it out.
Bergen - can be done independently with ease. The old town, (Bryggen), harbour area and waterfront market are interesting. If it is not in cloud, a trip up the Floibanen funicular is recommended - good views and marked walking trails on the top.
The ship is fine - full promenade deck, flexible dining and a friendly atmosphere are its strengths. The minus points were the inconvenient departure port of Harwich - why travel south to go north. After 18 hours at sea, we were only at the same latitude as Edinburgh. This 'dead time' could be used for an additional port of call or extended time in Torshavn - where we did not arrive until early afternoon. Destination Services also forgot to check that Reykjavik was 1 hour behind the time in the UK - even though I queried it. Smoking was allowed in part of Liberties - this permeated through the whole lounge - unfortunately there were several activities in Liberties which attracted by then 9 year old son. On a more recent cruise, I was glad to see Thomsons have tightened up on smoking and it is now confined to restricted areas of open deck only.

We have cruised on the Spirit and Celebration many times and love these two ships, they are such good value for money and so friendly.
However, before this cruise I had read lots of reviews complaining about vibration, which I took with a pinch of salt, because there has always been a certain amount of vibration on these ships. Having been in for a refit at the end of last year I understand, I naturally assumed that the Spirit would be running a bit more smoothly. Far from it, and I can see why these people complained of vibration, it was most definitely far worse than we have experienced before, and sitting in the centre area of the show lounge, was really quite uncomfortable. Let's hope that Thomson might sort out this problem, because it can be quite off putting for some people, especially first time cruisers.
Couldn't fault the rest of the ship, food, entertainment was all up to it's usual excellent standard, the crew worked their socks off, only problem we had was the weather, awful, rained most of the time, but hey, what better place to be in inclement weather than a cruise ship, with good food and entertainment, beats a hotel every time.
We sail on the Celebration again in August, back to the fjords, so hoping that she hasn't developed the added vibration that the Spirit has.

This was our third cruise on the Thomson Spirit. The night we arrrived a waiter called Spikey in the High Spirits Nightclub called out look the twins are back. (We had not been on the Thomson Spirit for a year) The next day Captin Nickolaos Michaeloliakos shook hands with us and said welcolme back. I thought Reggie was a brilliant dancer and a very nice person, Paul Evans was loved by all age groups and Glenn was a very good singer. We had a great time as always but the weather for May was very disappointing. We danced every evening thanks to Gabor the DJ, and the visit to the bridge was great. The safes in the cabins are a great improvement. If you are looking for ship to go on your first cruise this is definately the one for you.

we were a group of 8 adults 1 child and a baby.
we had a fantastic time aboard the spirit. one couple in our group were new to cruising and they are already thinking of the next cruise.
our waiters in the compass rose were Aly and Hersam who were excellent, our wine waiter was Min small name for a fantastic person. nothing was to much bother for them. Food was really good, wine service was excellent with a capital "E"
the shows were really good my granddaughter who is 10 watched them in awe.
the game shows were good too and EMMA is awesome "well done you"
one day we docked next to a big cruise ship and we looked like a tug, however after speaking to others on board these super liners I think thomson are a very friendly ship, and you can make friends easily on board.

WE HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM OUR 4TH ANUAL CRUISE ABOARD THE SPIRIT AND IT WAS STILL AS GOOD AS EVER.
THE LIDO RESTURAUNT WHICH WE PREFER TO DINE IN ALWAYS HAD A GOOD SELECTION OF FOOD WHICH ANYONE COULD FIND SOMETHING THEY LIKE, AS WELL AS THE SOUPS AND THE NUMEROUS DESERTS ON OFFER.
THE WAITERS AND BAR STAFF AROUND THE SHIP WAS AS GOOD AS ALWAYS, ALWAYS TOPPING UP YOUR DRINKS AS SOON AS YOUR GLASS GETS NEAR THE BOTTOM.
THE ENTERTAINMENT TEAM IN HIGH SPIRITS AND ROUND THE POOL ACTIVITIES (EMMA,LAURA,GEMMA AND PAUL) ARE THE BEST TEAM I HAVE SEEN IN ALL THE YEARS I HAVE CRUISED WITH THOMSONS, A FEW OF THE BROADWAY SHOW TEAM SEEM TO BE A LITTLE STUCK UP AND DONT SPEAK IF YOU PASS THEM AROUND THE SHIP, THAT WAS OUR OPINION ANYWAY BUT THEY STILL PUT ON SOME GOOD SHOWS.
THE CABIN WAS ALWAYS CLEAN AND MADE UP EVERYTIME WE WENT OUT WITH THE USUAL CHOCOLATES ON THE PILLOWS FOR WHEN YOU COME IN.
FIRST WEEK THE WEATHER WAS FAB, BUT THE SECOND WEEK WE HAD 4 DAYS RAIN, AND I MEAN RAIN, BUT AS THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME WE HAD SEEN RAIN IN THE 5 YEARS OF CRUISING IT DID AND DOES NOT PUT ME OFF CRUISING THIS TIME OF YEAR AGAIN.
THE AGE RANGE ON THE SHIP SEEMS TO BE GETTING YOUNGER EVERY YEAR WITH MORE OF A MIX OF THE YOUNGER GENERATION, WHICH THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE TO DO OR TAKE PART IN.
THE FIRST WEEK WE SEEMED TO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF AN INVASION OF RUSSIAN PASSENGERS WHO SEEMED TO TAKE OVER THE NITECLUB AND GET THERE TYPE OF MUSIC PLAYED AFTER MIDNIGHT, THE MUSIC (RAVE) WAS NOT TO EVERYONES TASTE SO THEY SEEMED TO HAVE HIGH SPIRITS TO THEMSELVES ONCE THE DISCO HAD STARTED,
THEN ON THE SECOND WEEK WE WERE JOINED BY A NORWEGIAN DANCE GROUP THAT ONCE AGAIN TOOK OVER HIGH SPIRITS ON A MORNING FOR AN HOUR OR SO, A COUPLE OF HOURS ON AN AFTERNOON, AND EVEN HAD A PRIVATE PARTY ON THE LIDO DECK ON NIGHT, ALL THEY WANTED TO DO WAS DANCE !!!
WHAT USED TO BE AN ALL ENGLISH SHIP SEEMS TO BE GETTING FILLED UP WITH ANYONE THAT WANTS TO GO ON.
THE FIRST WEEKS SAIL AWAY PARTY WAS FAB AS USUAL, BUT THE SECOND WEEK WAS CANCELLED ON THE OPEN DECK DUE TO THE NICE WEATHER WE HAD AND WAS MOVED INTO HIGH SPIRITS WHICH WAS NOT REALLY BIG ENOUGH FOR THE EVENT ,BUT STILL THE TEAMS MADE THE BEST OUT OF A BAD JOB.
AS FOR THE SMOKERS AMONGS YOUS, THERE IS NO SMOKING ANYWHERE INSIDE THE SHIP, IT IS ONLY PERMITTED ON HALF OF THE LIDO DECK, AND OTHER DESIGNATED AREAS AROUND THE SHIP, SO IF ITS RAINING YOU ARE GONNA GET WET!!!, ALTHOUGH THE BROUCHER FOR THE 2008 / 2009 CRUISES SAYS 2 LOUNGES 1 NON SMOKING, SO BE WARNED "NO SMOKING AT ALL INSIDE THE SHIP EVEN IN CABINS".
THIS HAS ONLY COME INTO FORCE THIS MAY AS THEY SAY THEY ARE COMPLYING WITH ENGLISH LAW BUT THE THOMSON SPIRIT IS REGISTERED TO CYPRUS !! NOT ENGLAND!!
THE LIVE BANDS AROUND THE SHIP TEND TO PLAY THE SAME MUSIC OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND BY THE END OF THE SECOND WEEK IT BECOMES A LITTLE REPETATIVE AND THE THOUGHT OH NO NOT AGAIN SPRINGS TO MIND.
THE VIBRATION ON THE SHIP IS STILL ONGOING AND DONT THINK IT WILL GET ANY BETTER, ITS NEVER CHANGED IN 5 YEARS BUT DONT LET IT PUT YOU OFF AS ONCE 24 HRS HAVE PASSED YOU ARE USED TO IT , PLUS ITS A GOOD SLEEPING AID TO GET YOU OFF TO SLEEP,
THE SPIRIT IS GOING TO THE FIORDS, NORWAY, AND ICELAND NEXT MAY SO THAT IS OUR ANNUAL MAY MED CRUISE OUT THE WINDOW , SO WILL HAVE TO TRY THE GREEK ISLANDS, OR THE RED SEA NEXT YEAR.
ALL IN ALL WE STILL ENJOYED OUR TWO WEEK CRUISE ALTHOUGH I HAVE HAD A FEW GRIPES WRITING THIS, AND WILL BE RETURNING EARLY NEXT YEAR FOR OUR NEXT CRUISING HOL ABOARD THE SPIRIT ,
SO IF YOU WANT TO BE WINED AND DINED AND TREAT LIKE ROYALTY BY THE WAITERS AND SERVING STAFF TREAT YOURSELF TO A HOL ON THE SPIRIT, I DONT SEE HOW ANY ONE COULD COME AWAY DISAPPIONTED,
HAPPY CRUISING TO YOU ALL
