Just got back from a week on Celebration - everything was absolutely great, cabins were larger than expected and very clean, food was exceptional, both in the restaurants and on deck, we had the drinks package, and it literally covered everything, entertainment was very very good, all in all one of the best cruises I have ever travelled on. All of the staff were courteous and helpful, and nothing appeared to be too much trouble. Can't wait to go with them again.

To give you an idea about what we felt about this ship we booked for 2 weeks in order to do the trips in a leisurely fashion, but left after a week.

We booked an outside cabin which was L shaped with one bed under a dirty draughty porthole and another under the television. After we viewed the cabin we went to reception to see if we could change our cabin.

We were astonished to see a queue of at least 20 people complaining about their accommodation, and as we were one of the first to board more were to follow. One woman was in tears and asking to get off the ship another came down with all 6 pillows from her cabin which were yellow and stained

We were told that the ship was full and the chance of a change was doubtful. We returned to the cabin and began unpacking, one of the drawers would not close properly, and when I pulled it out, a scarf full of dust was behind the drawer. The towels were grey and old and our pillows and slips were yellow and discoloured.

We complained again at reception but nothing was done until the 6th day when we asked to go to a hotel. The Pilipino receptionists were very nice until they realised that we expected to be moved free of charge, we finally managed to see the manager and she was very helpful and organised a transfer to a hotel when we docked at Sharm.

We expected an older ship but definitely not a dirty one, the only time we saw the our cabin steward was the last day when he knocked our door to clean, as he knew we were leaving.

Other negatives were the food in the main dining room it was very like pub grub and not hot, although the buffet was better. Also, you could not get a sun bed as people were getting up and putting their towels on but not lying on them until later.

A big positive was the entertainment especially at New Years Eve.

Will not be back on a Thomson’s ship.

Thomson Celebration/ Red Sea January and November 2007, The Dales, Telford.

The Thomson Celebration is a medium sized cruise ship which we understand to have the same layout as the Thomson Spirit. The ship was almost full when we travelled on 2 separate occasions in 2007 (January and November) on the Red Sea Cruise.

We went back the second time because we enjoyed our first cruise so much and found it to be excellent value for money. Our second cruise reinforced our high opinions from the first one. Passenger numbers are not too high which means it is possible to keep bumping into a small number of people. This gives a feeling of intimacy which we have not found on larger ships.

The general ambiance of the ship is pleasant with staff in the main being friendly and helpful as well as there being high levels of cleanliness throughout. The Red Sea had reliable weather with almost constant sunshine and temperatures like a hot British summer. We also found the ship felt very stable with little sea movement.

The food was without doubt very good in all of the ship’s venues. It was mainly British in style with Mediterranean influences though there were some themed evenings e.g. Asian. The buffet offered a good selection of choices for each course at each meal and you could get hot drinks and food here 24/7.

The main restaurant offered excellent service. There was one (optional) formal evening - the Captains Cocktail party. There were 3 opportunities for formal photographs as we queued to enter the theatre where this was held.

The photo opportunities were well organised in such a way as to distract you from the fact that you were queuing - though this only took about 30 minutes in total. You are allocated a sitting for this occasion with the early one being at 5.30 and the late at 7.30. There is a 2 hour slot where you can meet with the Maitre D to change the sitting, though opportunities to do this may be limited – you would need to check with reception when this will be (in our case it was straight after lifeboat drill). Many people chose to 'dress up' to eat in the main restaurant on other nights such that you would not feel out of place dressed in either evening wear or smart casual – we chose to dress up each evening and fully enjoyed the chance to do so.

There are no formal ‘sittings’ aside from the Captains Night and table allocation is on arrival which means it is possible to meet new people each evening if you wish. However it is possible to request being seated with a particular waiter and his team though there may be a wait to do this if the waiter is popular. One downside to this it that where the waiter is popular you may find your meal is rushed so he can get as many of his ‘regular’ customers through. We found wine prices to be reasonable with a good selection available between £10 and £15 per bottle.

The only criticism of the food in the restaurant and buffet is that if you are vegetarian or have ethnic preferences then choices are really quite limited and not as exciting as for meat eaters. There is also a small al la carte restaurant called ‘Zillis’ where you can eat for an extra cover charge. The first meal we had here was so good we went back a second time. Booking in advance is desirable. The menus and restaurant are sponsored by Aldo Zilli and consequently have an Italian theme. Our first meal was exceptional – we have never ever tasted food so good. The main course of my second meal was a little dry and therefore disappointing, though my husband’s was again excellent.

The olive oil on the table was lovely enough to drink and the tapenade to die for. You could have any combination of items from the menu – so could just have 3 starters and a dessert if you wish. All courses were beautifully presented. At the end of the evening each table was admirably serenaded by the waiting staff. Our only criticism (and we passed this to the staff) was that portions were generally too large (and we are foodies with large appetites) particularly if you follow the pattern of the main restaurant menu which is for 5 courses.

Our advice … chose 3 courses and go twice! In the very likely event that we cruise on Celebration in the future we shall definitely be eating here again.

We opted to stay on board for both our cruises. We had gone primarily for the sunbathing and relaxation. There is ample space and sunbeds for all even when the ship is at sea with everyone on board; though people do still feel the need to secure one with a towel! Pool towels are provided. The pools are pleasant though not heated. The Jacuzzi was out of order though on both our trips. The gym is quite well equipped though it can get crowded at certain times of the day. You can however exercise by walking the promenade deck in the evening once the sunbeds have been removed – 5 times round = a mile. There are separate male and female saunas with extra towels provided.

The Beauty Spa was generally very quiet except on Captains night. The aromatherapy massage was good though twice the price we pay at home. All the ports are industrial and away from the nearest towns. This means it is not really possible to take a pleasant walk to and from where the boat is moored.

Keeping busy is not a problem and it is possible to go home exhausted if you try to do everything! The trips generally involve a long day with an early start and late finish. Though we did not take any ourselves all the people we spoke to who had gone on them described them in positive terms despite there being tiring. We were told by those who went that the Petra trip involves a walk of several miles down and then back up afterwards along a sandy path. It can also be cold there: in January it was 2 degrees so if you plan on going there make sure you take warm clothing. It was possible to buy fleeces on board though stock was limited.

The buffet and restaurant vary their opening hours to accommodate the start and finish times and will still serve you if you are back slightly later than the normal closing time. Some days in the region of 25 coaches left the ship to take cruisers to the various sites which is an indication of the popularity of the trips and speaks for itself. This meant plenty of space and peace and quiet for those of us who stayed on board.

The onboard shops have a variety of jewellery and fashion items as well as a small shop where it is possible to buy alcohol and cigarettes at good prices as well as books and everyday bits and bobs. You can drink the alcohol you buy onboard in your cabin (something we had not been allowed to do on other cruises). The opening times of the shops are when the ship is at sea.

Each evening you receive a newsletter in your cabin which gives details of the next day’s venue and events. These are well worth reading as they contain really useful information that enables you to plan your day or just note what you are going to miss! There are interesting lectures (don’t be put off by the titles it’s not like being at school!) from expert, guest speakers which can add to your knowledge of Egypt as well as health and beauty events, cards games, and other organised events. Up-to-date films are shown 3 times daily with a different one each day, in the ships cinema. If you want someone else to keep you busy there’s plenty of opportunity.

There is a stage show each evening which is repeated so you can eat early or later and still catch it. We found the quality of the performances, costumes, lighting and sound quality to all be of a very high standard…. And the entertainment staff clearly loved what they did and enjoyed every minute of performing. Though there were a few children on board they were not very visible.

We found our cabin on A deck to be superior to that on B deck: the former had twin beds at the back of the cabin whereas the latter was L shaped and so this cabin was narrower. However the facilities were the same in both. Reasonable draw and wardrobe space, a compact bathroom that had a good, hot shower. The in-cabin entertainment included a number of family oriented films and limited satellite channels though the TV could only be viewed from 1 of the beds in the L-shaped cabin.

Our cabin steward was happy to get extra pillows, coat hangers, and drinks. The mini bar was stocked at the same prices as the public bars. We did have to remind our steward a couple of times that we had signed an order slip before our water arrived.

Bottled water was £1.35 per 1 ½ litres. The tap water though drinkable didn’t taste very nice. Towels were not large and a bit shabby so we would be inclined to take bath towels with us next time. There are laundrettes to do your own washing though you would need to take washing powder with you as we didn’t see any for sale anywhere. Smoking is significantly restricted and not allowed in the cabin so both cabins smelt pleasant. Hair dryers are provided. It is not possible use a kettle in the cabin but we just got mugs of hot water (available 24/7) from the buffet to take with us to make a drink in the cabin.

This is a lovely ship and venue. We look forward to sailing with her again in the Red Sea for the sun and R&R. We would recommend this holiday to anyone but would suggest to someone thinking of doing lots of trips to spread them out and also to consider a cruise and stay in a beach resort afterwards to relax - we staid AI at the Makadi Oasis for a week following our January cruise. It is in a beautiful resort. Very clean and safe. The food was good if a little boring and not as good as the boat but there was opportunity to get credit from the hotel toward restaurant meals elsewhere in the resort.

It was an excellent holiday.

If your idea of a week's holiday involves copious amounts of fried food and being surrounded by people smoking and drinking lager from 8.45am then this trip is probably for you. I found the whole experience a huge let down, particularly given the cost of the trip. I paid for Las Vegas and got Butlins.

Let me begin with the positives. The embarkation arrangements were very fast and efficient; the cabin stewards were effective, discreet and friendly; the dancers on board who provided the bulk of the entertainment were very professional, perhaps deserving a better forum to show their talents and, finally, the reception staff were helpful and understanding.

As far as the negatives are concerned, these are many. The ship is old and small, and so the decor in the lounges and the cabins was tired and depressing. The lounges reminded me of working men’s clubs with their decor and flashing disco lights. In terms of my cabin, I had to move from an outside to an inside cabin due to the fact that the heating did not work. In addition, the lack of water for a night did not exactly help. However, I could have accepted this had the food been anywhere near to restaurant standard - it certainly wasn't. I sent three plates of food back due to them being either cold or undercooked - one of these dishes was returned due to the fish being raw in the centre and another was returned twice as the food was entirely cold and undercooked. As far as entertainment is concerned, it was all very Phoenix Nights. The dancers did their best but...

All in all, coupled with the 27 hour return flight delay, it was a very depressing holiday and I would strongly recommend that you go with a proper cruise company such as Royal Caribbean, Norwegian or Princess. If you have ever travelled on one of these then would strongly advise you to steer clear of Thomson’s and the Thomson Celebration.

Just returned from a wonderful cruise on the Celebration - we 'did not do cruises’ but this was fantastic.

The staff were brilliant, couldn't do enough for you...thanks to Romeo at the Horizons in particular.

Food great, cabin fantastic, although would not have a cabin on 9th again - a bit wobbly, but we got used to it after the 1st night. The night entertainment was really good and so professional - well done to all.

The trips to Pyramids, Dead Sea etc were well organised although a long day- well worth it, Cairo was a real eye opener!

Thanks to all crew for a truly memorable cruise - booked again for Christmas 08 around Canaries, if half as good will be happy!

I found the whole experience very pleasant. The ship was spotless, I saw no flies or any other beasties onboard, and all the staff were very courteous and helpful. My cabin on Eagle deck was very spacious and was kept immaculate. There were plenty of sunbeds available at any time of day.

The entertainment was fine, the team work very hard, I especially enjoyed the night when members from the reception, bar and restaurant teams put on a show.

The ports of Sokhna and Safaga were quite appalling, the ugliest I have ever seen, however they were chosen for accessibility to the Pyramids etc.

Petra was amazing I would highly recommend the trip. I also enjoyed the pyramids but felt uneasy about safety, there was an armed guard on board the bus, which instead of reassuring me made me feel quite vulnerable. On return from the long trips, there were drinks, hot towels and the crew band on the quay to greet us which I found lovely.

There was plenty choice of food, which was well cooked.

The ship is quite dated but I feel it has character.

Overall, the holiday was very enjoyable, and a great escape from the dreary January weather.

The ship is old and small. Room is of good size.

Liberty Bar too smoky would have like to part take more activities, but the smoke made me sick!

Food warm. Steak no good. Good hot dogs and burgers. Fantastic sponge puddings.

Very well organised excursions - i.e. getting off the ship - no over loaded crowds because passengers were getting off the ship by themselves, not like RCCL where everyone met in one of the lounges.

Excursions to Cairo, Petra, and Luxor were great, although started very early.

The itinerary was fantastic, but the ship is on the down side - being small and old.

Flow from Bristol, which is our local airport, to Sharm-El-Sheikh. The whole operation was very smooth, from boarding the plane to embarking the ship.

The cabin was a fair size and clean.

Food was average, some food were warm. Most meat dishes were in some sort of sauces. I am not a sauce person so I said that the food was not as good as if it was without those horrid sauces! So I end up having hot-dogs and burger from the pool side grill. And lots of sponge and custard. The lobster on the formal evening was not nice. The 24 hour buffet is a very good idea!

Went on excursion every day.

Day1 Wadi Rum - The desert safari was an experience.

Day2 Petra - This is a must see if you are in Jordan. Walking along the gorge to the Treasury was like walking back into time, as there were carved statues in the cliff faces everywhere. The Treasury was just out of this world. Going into the actual city was like live history, there were Roman pillars, carved temples, Greek statues.

Day4 Cairo - The Pyramids were just amazing, the size of them has to be seen to be appreciated. The Sphinx with a Pyramid behind IS a picture! Mummies in the Cairo Museum are an eye-opener!

Day 5 & 6 Luxor - Valley of the Kings is quite a site. Walking into the tombs with the amazing coloured hieroglyphic corridors was like walking with those 'dead' kings in their days. The Temple of Hatshepsut shown what a strong willed queen could do!

Day7 Sharm-El-Sheikh - Went on a glass bottom boat to observe the multi coloured coral and the colourful fishes.

All tour were well organised. The tickets were printed with you coach number and time of departure, so that there were no waiting inside the ship's lounge. Individual passengers could leave at their own pace instead of a large group (the whole coach) descending to the gangway at the same time!

Although the tour days started very early, there were not enough time at each site to truly admire each building! Maybe I need to go back to these places and absorb more information slowly!

This is definitely a floating Butlins!!

The accommodation was dirty full of flies & flee type beasties. Bathroom was mouldy.

Food was terrible always cold, we had to pay £45 a night to eat in Zilli's the only decent food on the Boat.

The Gala Dinner was a joke we were given 4 courses in 45 minutes.

Drinks were expensive £1.25 for a tin of juice. Entertainment was ok if you are into cheap & tacky.

Sunloungers were always full you were lucky if you could even get a seat. Staff were rude always.

I would never recommend this boat to anyone.

This is the second time this year we cruised on the Celebration and once again we could not really fault it.

Although she is an older ship, I feel this adds character. We booked an inside cabin on Deck 1 but to our delight we found ourselves in an outside cabin on deck 8 (Bridge deck).

I suspect this may have been due to the fact that since we booked the cruise, smoking has been banned in all cabins, so I phoned to complain (not that I was really bothered, I just wanted to make a point) that we would have booked a cabin on a higher deck had we known.

The excursions were extremely well organised, although the days were very long. We were generally up around 6:00 am and did not get back on board ship until 6:00pm. The longest trip was the one to Luxor. We were lucky enough to manage to book an overnight stay in a fabulous 5 star hotel. Although this cost a bit more, it did mean that we wouldn't be spending about 8 hours on a bus that day!

Cairo was an eye opener. The traffic is beyond belief. How we didn't get shunted I'll never know. One tip if you go to the Cairo Museum. Don't bother following your guide around because unless you can stand right next to them when they are explaining the displays, you will not be able to hear a word they say its so noisy in there. Just ask them what time you are expected to meet up and get your tickets for Tut's room and the Mummies displays as soon as you get to the museum. Then go off and explore yourselves.

The Great Pyramids at Giza are virtually in downtown Cairo. I was very surprised at how close urbanisation has gotten to this site but they are still very breathtaking, as is standing next to the Sphinx! If you are at all claustrophobic, don't go into the tomb of the Great pyramid, because you won't like it!

All the staff on board were very friendly and attentive and the shows we saw were of a good standard. As expected, the food was up to its usual high standard with plenty of choice. One minor gripe I had was the water served in the restaurants was not bottled water but tap water with tonnes of chlorine in. It was undrinkable as far as we were concerned.

The drinks do seem quite expensive, but I found the bottles of spirit on sale in the duty free shop were cheap as chips so I used to decant some vodka into a small water bottle, buy a can of coke in the bar, and just add the vodka. But hubby still had to pay £2.85 for a bottle of Becks!

The only complaint we had about the entertainment were the Summerland band that play out on deck during the afternoons and in Liberties bar in the evenings. They are DIRE! I've never seen a band empty a bar as quickly as this lot did once they started singing. We didn't meet anyone who had a good word to say about them.

We will definitely be cruising again with Thomson :o)

Having read many reviews about the Thomson Celebration, I decided to go with an open mind. For the last two years I have cruised with P & O and my expectations have been greatly disappointed.

On arriving at the terminal we were offered a glass of Orange Juice. Although the Cruise Terminal is no more than a little building, the process was quick and friendly and we made our way across the car park to the ship.

The ship is one of only a few built in an angular shape so it does not have the sleek lines of the some other ships. On boarding via a small easy to access gangway we were welcomed on board and immediately escorted to our cabin by a member of the crew (something that I believe P & O used to do but like most things with the big cruise lines they reduce to save money).

We had a deluxe cabin on deck 9, which was spacious and came complete with full bathroom and mini bar. Unlike many ships there was lots of wardrobe space and drawers. Toiletries in the bathroom were plentiful and of a good quality although unbranded.

During the week we passed many cabins in all grades and even the smaller ones on lower decks looked comfortable. Everything about the Thomson Celebration was FIRST CLASS.

The food, the entertainment, the cabins, the public rooms and most important the crew. From Captain Roy down to the guys who maintain the ship, there was always a smile or acknowledgement. The entertainment provided by the entertainment team was amazing, everything from musical shows to afternoon plays, it was professionally produced and you found that you didn’t want them to end.

We never had food that we couldn’t eat and as it was plentiful and available 24 hours a day, you will never go hungry. The additional cost of a visit to Zilli's is well worth it, just to say you have been but the food in both the Meridian and Lido Restaurants was of such high quality, it didn’t really matter. Even when you left the ship for the long day excursions, little snack boxes were given to everyone and after returning from a long day, some of the waiters welcomed us back with singing, orange juice and hot towels.

I have travelled on many cruise ships over the years including QE2, Oriana and Oceana but have to say whilst Thomson have like other cruise companies changed for the new Millennium with the implementation of 24 hour dining etc. Thomson have maintained the things that make cruising what it was and still should be - SPECIAL!

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Thomson Celebration, in fact I have already booked for two more cruises next year. This is a friendly ship, not too big but still offering you your own personal space even when full. Well Done to everyone at Thomson Cruises.

My friend and I went on our very first cruise in November, on Thomson's Celebration. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like royalty by all the staff we met.

Waiters, bar staff, cabin attendants, and all other members of the crew were always cheerful, polite, and helpful. Our cabin was bigger than expected and was clean and comfortable.

The only thing people should know is that there is only one electric socket, which was placed directly on the worktop. This positioning made it impossible to charge mobiles, use hair straighteners, etc., as the plugs would not fit into this awkwardly placed socket.

However, this did not in any way stop our enjoyment of this superbly run cruise.

Everything was extremely well-organised, especially the excursions. We went on the three main ones to Petra, Cairo, and Luxor. We were grateful for a day on board ship in between these trips, to relax and recover from our exertions.

There are organised activities of all kinds during the day and entertainment in the evening for those who want it. You can also lie and sunbathe if you prefer a quieter time.

We would recommend this cruise to anyone. You will be extremely well-fed and pampered by everyone on board, and you will meet lots of new people.

If staying on a floating Butlins, complete with hi-de-hi style entertainment, third rate shabby, dated and noisy accommodation, expensive drinks (approx £3.50 for a G&T), and copious amounts of secondary tobacco smoke thrown in appeals, then this is the holiday for you.

But don't think you will be cruising much. Over half of your week's holiday will be spent tied up in three of the ugliest and smelly ports in the world (think sewage/concrete works, combined with industrial estate, and you have the picture).

You won't be able to go off exploring on your own, because with the exception of Sharm, which has numerous Tourist Police, Egypt is simply too dangerous.

This is why all tourist trips are accompanied by armed police, both on board, and accompanying coaches.

The only positive thing to say about this cruise is that the food is nice, and the staff are efficient and friendly.

Having just returned from a Red Sea Cruise on the Thomson Celebration may I say that the week spent onboard was a pleasure.

The catering was excellent, the stewards friendly and efficient. Our cabin was clean and well looked after. Cleanliness was obviously taken seriously and hand scrub facilities were available at all accesses to ship and to the various restaurants. Onboard entertainment was pretty good.

The ship's staff who arranged shore side trips had the business off to a fine art and the organisation could not be faulted.

The only downside we found was the complete lack of manners of many of the older English female passengers, who do not seem to have the words "please or thank you" in their vocabulary.

As to blocked toilets, which we did not experience, the following poem will convey some good advice from an old ex seafarer.

Chippy's (Ship's carpenter/plumber) lament.

To those of you who grunt and groan,

whilst seated on this marble throne

spare a thought or a give a ponder

upon the route your waste will wander.

Through paths tortuous it will wind

on bends it will so easily bind

but you know it shouldn’t oughter

if you flush with ample water

so hold the handle for a while

and thus keep chippy’s happy smile

too often has it been his gripe

three inch backside and two inch pipe.

Best Regards

I recommend that if you have chance to book the all inclusive drinks package it is well worth it.

The entertainment was first class truly talented people you would think you were watching the shows on a west end stage.

Everything was very well organised. Fantastic holiday.
