We recently returned from this cruise and would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone.

The service from all members of staff was excellent and nothing was too much trouble for them. The singing waiters were super, the entertainment was very good particularly the Africa show and all involved must have worked very hard.

It would be hard to fault the quality of the food which was available 24hrs a day.

We had a suite on deck 9 which was sparkling clean with stewardess visits twice a day with towels and face cloths changed twice daily. The suite was very roomy with everything at hand to make you feel at home and the private balcony gave a welcome respite to the hustle and bustle of life on board.

We felt the excursions were very good but were expensive for the length of the tours.

We would certainly travel on the Destiny again we have been on several cruises but none as friendly as the Destiny.

Arriving on board on 23rd October we found that our cabin toilet had not been working for "more than 24hrs" and was still inoperative.

Despite two letters from the Captain, one dated 23rd October, which closed by saying "please be assured we will only sail tomorrow morning if we are completely satisfied that the vacuum toilet system is fully operational" and one dated 26th October, which opened by saying "In order to ensure that the toilet vacuum system continues to function normally, we will be carrying out some routine maintenance tomorrow morning whilst in port." there appeared to be little, if any, reduction in the number of complaints by passengers!

Passengers should never have been brought on board until the toilet problems had been rectified. Of course Thomsons blamed the public for the debacle but, whilst I accept that the public are not necessarily 'lily white' in this matter, it seems to me that the problem was more deep seated and suggests that the ongoing maintenance programme (if there was one) was inadequate.

We are not new to cruising, this being our 14th. One of our previous cruises was on this ship when it was owned by Airtours and named 'Sunbird'. Airtours could have taught Thomsons a great deal about running cruise ships, particularly about the food, which we found disappointing.

The ship was very prone to rolling even in very slight seas - something we do not recall from it's 'Sunbird' days. Perhaps the stabilisers were out of action to save on fuel costs!

The reception staff were described as "the enemy" - that seems to me to be a reasonable description.

I wonder what the German public's reaction would have been in these circumstances? After all, Thomsons is part of TUI, a German Company!!

I will close by saying that although there is a lot more I could justifiably criticise, I think the above gives a good glimpse of the situation we found and that we have no intention of ever booking another cruise on a Thomsons ship!

This was our third cruise, having sailed on this ship when it was the Sunbird we were hoping for the same excellent facilities this was not to be.

The food on board was very good as was the waiters bar staff and cabin service.

During our cruise 20th to October 27th we encountered 3 major issues

1. Toilet system. 2. Hot water. 3. Management/reception personnel.

The toilet system was playing up from the first day we got on board this issue was

encountered all over the ship. There were times when the toilet in the cabin was nearly over flowing, and with the public toilets also out of action this left people with no where to go. I'm sorry to say that it took a lot of arguments from passengers before any statements were issued from either the captain or senior personnel.

The reception staff were not very helpful regarding our or other passengers situations. We also suffered with no hot water for many days in our cabin again this was at times encountered in other areas across the ship.

The motion of the ship was also very bad as most of the time the seas looked calm and very little breeze we encountered many people feeling ill including myself.

I have written to Thomson Customer service about our dismay and the response that I have received back from them is as useful and as apologetic as the blocked toilets on the ship.

We have just returned from a week on board the Destiny. What a wonderful ship, it was our first cruise with our two children along with my parents who cruise regularly. The staff all work very hard to make sure you have a good holiday. I have to mention the kids club who kept both children occupied for up to five hours a day, some mornings even collecting them from our cabin. Our cabin steward was Gary who made swans and monkeys out of the towels for the children along with making sure our cabin was immaculate.

We did our own thing at the ports choosing to get taxis which saved alot of money, especially Morocco only 25 euro for three hours with the driver as our guide. Madeira was lovely as was Lanzarote especially Timanfaya (fire mountains).

Most evenings we ate in the Seven Seas Restaurant the food was excellent as were the waiters especially Toto who taught my daughter the art of napkin folding, nothing was too much trouble.

Flights were on time Thomson seem to have got it down to a fine art, all in all a wonderful holiday .We are already looking at next years itinerary, cant wait. (Daughter has decided she wants to sail on every ship in the sea, so it’s going to be an expensive few years as she’s only five) See you next year.

Before going on this Cruise we kept an eye on these reviews to see what others thought. We had noticed the name Gavin praised as the Assistant Cruise Director many times. However it now appears Gavin is no longer on the Destiny and has been replaced by Keef who we found to be quite capable although we didn't really find Sue Denning the Cruise Director very interesting at all.

We travelled as a family group which included my 2 nieces who are 3 and 7. They enjoyed the Kids Club on the ship and found the whole holiday enjoyable.

The young Entertainment staff seemed to be working constantly and full credit to them for this, although the shows were not to the standard we were expecting.

The ship was constantly being cleaned and the cabin was cleaned twice a day.

We did have a problem with the toilet flushing on two occasions near to the end of the holiday. Which seems to coincide with other reviews on here. The cabins aren't very sound proofed either. We had an annoying welsh couple arguing throughout the holiday and we could hear every word.

Our Restaurant waiters Kenneth and Ausden were very friendly. Me & my girlfriend had Minted Lamb one evening and commented that it was so good we could eat it again. Within minutes Kenneth had grabbed us another knife and fork each and placed another lamb dinner in front of us. Kenneth also gave us all a private napkin folding lesson after dinner one evening. Showing us how to make Candles and Ships etc. Also we recommend the Baked Alaska.

We had a couple of nights which were quite rocky and weather wasn't brilliant for parts of the holiday (it was raining in Madeira), and was quite cloudy. The day at sea was very nice as it was sunny all day.

Tips and Advice for anyone going on the Colourful Coasts Cruise on the Destiny:

1) If you want to play Table Tennis while on-board, buy yourself some bats to take with you or buy some at one of the ports because the bats offered by reception aren't very good at all and people tend to get them from reception and keep them the whole holiday anyway.

2) For all the Ladies that want to use their straighteners on-board the Destiny then don't be fooled by the 110v plug above the dressing table. There is a 220v European type plug behind the TV in all cabins.

3) When you get to Lanzarote, Thomson will try and sell shuttle bus tickets at £3 each. If all you're interested in is having a walk around some shops and Cafes as well as lying on a Beautiful beach then there is a free shuttle bus run every 30 minutes which sits just off the ship. We took this along with several other passengers from the Ship. It's only a 10 minute ride and it takes you to a very nice resort with a golden sandy beach.

4) Make sure to keep all your receipts while buying anything on-board and also check the statement that is delivered to you. I was charged for several things which I DID NOT sign for and without questioning these items it would have come straight off my card when they take payment. The cashless system seems very insecure as a credit system.

Although I have highlighted the problems we had with our holiday we thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely go on another Thomson Cruise.

From the 6th to the 13th of October we cruised the Destiny, the ship just having started its Colourful Coasts itinerary around the Canaries, Madeira and Morocco. We had a standard outside cabin on the 6th deck. It was very tiny, with only a shower, basin and toilet. There was quite good wardrobe space, however.

This would have been fine, only we have friends who booked at last minute a few weeks before embarking and they paid £300 less and had a deluxe suite, with bathroom, large television and minibar. Speaking with many people, I found several who booked at last minute, and had a cruise and stay holiday for £580 or £600.

The food was excellent. I was pleased that full-board meant that you could eat at any time and pay only for drinks. We had the first dining sitting. We had a waiter, Sharma, who was very attentive and likable. The staff were, in the main, very good. We had a cabin steward, Fortunato, and when we returned to cabin would find that he had tidied up all our possessions while we were out.

The main evening entertainment followed whichever sitting for dining you had. This was the low point for me. The show seemed to consist of teen and early twenties kids straight out of college and auditioning for their Equity card. The generation catered for you can tell from the names of the shows “Summer Holiday” and “Half a Sixpence”. When these “Redcoat” types spoke on stage sometimes I looked to see if there were cue-cards held up for them, it was so stilted.

The director of entertainment, Sue, performed her one-woman show. For anybody under the age of 40 it was quite baffling. She got all the guests, old enough to remember, to join-in chanting advertising jingles of the fifties. She talked of home perm kits. Then there was a sing-along. I consider my knowledge of pop quite encyclopaedic, but some of the songs went right over me. She introduced one song as being by Alma Cogan. My God! The woman’s been dead 40 years! I know my opinion is a rare one. Most loved these shows.

Everything was kept very clean, and there was antiseptic hand-cream for use before using the restaurants. Now, the toilets. There were already signs of problems from the start. I arrived on the first night at my cabin and found in the pan the water almost up to the seat. Most times the flush worked, but sometimes you had to call someone to sort it out; and they would do something out in the corridor to make it work again.

It all seemed a bit temperamental. I was sorry to hear the trouble people would have the following week.

I would go on the Destiny again and, if they have a suitable itinerary, most probably will.

Hi we enjoyed a great week onboard the Thomson Destiny from 13 Oct 06.

The selection on bars and food are great, the seven seas restaurant was very good for dinner with waiter service and excellent food...not to be missed. But we enjoyed breakfast on the Lido deck in the fresh air with great views.

We recommend the all inclusive drinks package as you’ll save hundreds of pounds.

Our favourite bar was the Clipper Bar with fast staff and great service.

The on board entertainment by the ship bands, Argo Trio, Club 5 and Bill ( pianist) were always good but the onboard Thomson team are a little poor, but any acts who joined the ship were great.

All in all a great cruise, with great ports of call (we did our own thing in most ports) but Agadir could do with being dropped from the route.

Cabins were fine, we were on inside deck 6 and the cabin staff can't do enough for you to keep your cabin clean and tidy.

Tipping between £10-20 to each staff member who we enjoyed on the last night pleased all of them.

The cruise was a bit rocky on occasions but nothing to bad, as it’s only a small ship this was to be expected.

Got back from this cruise last night and almost everybody I spoke to on board had a great time. The weather wasn't brilliant but the crew can't be held responsible for that. Food was wonderful, service superb, entertainment excellent. I thought the shows were of a high standard, the comedian very funny and I also liked the jazz trio and Bill the pianist up in Blake's. There was no need to attend the game shows if that sort of entertainment doesn't appeal. We experienced no problems with the toilets although parts of the ship were affected one evening. Our inside cabin on Deck 3 was comfortable, convenient and quiet.

All the destinations were enjoyable and we took two tours - Taste of Madeira and Discover the North (Lanzarote) both of which we thoroughly enjoyed. We were lucky enough to have friends in Agadir who took us on a private tour which was an eye-opening experience. I did hear a few grumbles from people who took excursions that they were unable to stop and haggle in the souk but we got some amazing bargains.

Embarkation was fast and well organised, although a light to help identify our cases would have helped. Yes the ship rolled on the first two nights but after that it was fine. I used sea bands and took a couple of Sturgeon tablets which soon eased any queasiness. The reception staff were efficient and friendly.

This was our first time with Thomson, having cruised with many other lines before and overall, considering the price we paid, we thought it was excellent.

As a first time cruiser and having just returned from a great week on the destiny my partner and I are now actively looking to book our next cruise.

We did not have the best week of weather but the entertainment onboard made up for this. We did find the ship a tad dated with a distinct 1980s feel to it and the decor and also the entertainment sometimes reminded me of my holidays as a kid at holiday camps.

As first time cruisers it was a good intro into the world of cruising and we are now hooked! We would like to experience a big super liner next but we will also return to a Thomson’s ship - they were very organised and everything from boarding, luggage, excursions to disembarking and flights were extremely organised and professional.

Entertainment onboard ranged from karaoke, deal or no deal, mr & mrs to shows such as summer holiday (bit amateurish set) Africa (showcase of Africa themed songs which was shown aptly on the night we set sail for Africa - Agadir) and hits from the flicks. The entertainment team worked damned hard at what they did putting on 2 shows a night and although a very young team, did an admirable job. Got say though not as west end quality as we hoped but having done some stage work could not criticise to harshly) sue denning the cruise director was great we thought. A very experienced entertainer who put on a brilliant one woman show during the week.

Food on board was very good, especially in the seven seas restaurant which in line with the ship was quite old fashioned in decor. The waiters were very attentive, the food was of good quality but some of the presentation was a bit pub grub (only some mind). We were allocated a table of 8 and although we were a little apprehensive (we are both 35 and a gay couple) we ended up with some lovely people and all of the tables around us seemed to get on well. As for the 24 hour buffet in the lido we did eat there every night after a few vinos but some of the meat was not always as hot as it should have been (1 night we were quite sick - but may have been the all inclusive drinks!!!!) We avoided the clipper bar like the plague - very smokey and had the feel of a rough social club (alot of the ship is smoking which we hated - my partner smokes and hated it so much gave up on the ship, so a big thank you in one way to you Thomson’s!)

As for being a gay couple on board - got to say it was not a real problem - everyone was very friendly but bloody hell did people stare! We felt like we had 5 heads sometimes but we are not the type of people who flaunt ourselves and all in all we were ok - did feel "like the only gays on the boat " though!!

Cabins - ours was an outside - it was small but very compact and a bit like a caravan - storage space everywhere, we found the cabin quite comfy apart from rock hard bunks and stones for pillows. Would probably go for upgrade next time depending on price - would def have porthole though, we enjoyed waking up to new ports (although the berths were unattractive dumps apart from las Palmas and funchal) and one day at sea we saw a school of dolphins next to our porthole which made a great photo.

The bathroom was tiny but ok - only had one day when toilet blocked and overflowed onto the floor - very unattractive scooping yours and probably other passengers s*!t off your feet!

As for trips they were pretty expensive so we just did one in agadir which was ok. Funchal is lovely we did our own thing and in the port for 10euro each there is an open top bus tour with head sets not brilliant but it takes you around the town and up above the town into the hills.

As I said this was our first cruise but most definitely not our last - if you are going on this cruise or ship I am sure you will enjoy it but do not expect royal Caribbean or the oriana, however it is excellent value for money and a really friendly ship with a great holiday atmosphere...so enjoy!

This is the fifth cruise we have made with Thomson and the last time we will ever set foot on this ship.

I agree with other comments made about this ship elsewhere.

We chose a forward facing cabin outside deluxe. The cabin was tiny compared to other Thomson vessels. The beds or better description sailor’s bunks were set at right angles to each other. They are converted settees with the back rest pulled up for night time. The view from the cabin was restricted by a huge air-conditioning system that partially blocked the lower portion of our cabin window and most of the other cabins facing forward on deck five. No comment was made about this in the brochure.

We too could smell drains whilst in the bathroom. No baths of course just a two foot square shower cubicle, toilet and washbasin.

The vibration on the ship is very high and the ship was very unstable at sea. I am convinced we only had working stabilizers on one night. Our first night at sea did not start until early Saturday morning when we were awoken by a sliding and banging noise. As the ship rolled all the dresser drawers were sliding open and banging shut. The wardrobe doors were rattling too, what a din. We complained and three days later a carpenter arrived to fit new drawer catches which solved the problem, but not the rattling doors.

The ships vibration in the ‘Clipper Bar’ was so noisy at one location you could not here the group trying to entertain the passengers.

I agree the information from the Captain was always too little to late. Most announcements were doom and gloom. For example, “We are about to experience gales”.

The unruly children on board were totally ignored by the ships officers. Children played on the lifts selecting every floor to frustrate passengers trying to join their coaches or just move about the nine decks of the ship. On a previous Thomson cruise with the Emerald the ships security officer took control of unruly teenagers immediately and no further problems were encountered.

I have to say the quality of the food and the friendliness of the waiters were excellent. The entertainment was what you would expect on a Thomson cruise. However some of the entertainment was more like Hide-De Hi.

We did expect something a lot better of this ship, after all it is the largest of the fleet. We were booked to go for a two week cruise on this ship next year with friends who have not cruised before. We successfully managed to cancel and transfer our cruise to the Celebration a ship more in keeping with cruise standards.

In my opinion there are better ships used as cross channel ferries than the Thomson Destiny.

Oh dear, where to start. This was our second cruise and what a dissapointment, although there were some good points such as the food, entertainment in the Can Can Lounge and general cleanliness. Apart from that, first impression "A Floating Holiday Camp complete with party games".

Having booked a Deluxe cabin, which was fine if you didn't want to go to sleep before the second show, because you could hear it in the cabin. Using the toilet was a lottery, a repair had to be made every day sometimes twice a day. Even having a shower could have ended up getting severly scolded. We were given an early morning call at 0630, by a deck hand hosing down the windows with a jet washer. Most of the wooden deck chairs couldn't be altered because of rusty fittings, the cushions had to be used by passengers using the plastic deck chairs because they were dirty. We had to endure the noise of chipping hammers and the smell of paint throughout the day.

If you want to appear in Carry on Cruising then join the Thomson Destiny!

What a fantastic experience for first time cruisers. Everyone was very friendly, especially the waiters. Food was excellent, entertainment, top class, and service, nothing was too much trouble! The weather could have been better but that's no ones fault.

Many thanks to sue and Gavin and their team, and also to Tina, Anjo, and Dias. In my opinion, too much should not be read into the "toilet problem", it happened, it was dealt with, it caused slight inconvenience to some people but was exaggerated by the press back home.

To say that there was "mayhem" on board was just ridiculous! I've just watched the video, wonderful, thanks Thomson!

As this was our first attempt at cruising and limited to dates, we found this Thomson cruise would be ideal, but after the holiday was over, we have a mixed opinion.

Everything went well until we reached our cabin and found it to be slightly smaller than we had anticipated (the camera never lies?), but what disappointed us more was the smell of drains emanating from the bathroom area and a stale tobacco smell in the room itself. As we had arrived quite late in the evening, I did not complain immediately, but waited until the next morning when I went to reception to inform them. I was told that there was a problem with the plumbing in some areas of the ship, and that things should improve, but to come back if they had not.

Things did not improve and got significantly worse over the next two days, when the vacuum toilet system became somewhat of a lottery. Our cabin toilet, along with many other passengers' stopped working. I again went to inform the reception, to be given the same information. Things got even worse when the toilets in the public areas also became unusable. By the third day a number of passengers were becoming increasingly angry. one passenger came up the stairs with two waste bins full of toilet waste that he extricated himself to try to get his toilet in working order. At our port of call before a complete day at sea, the decision was made to hold the ship in port until the problem was fixed. Eventually all seemed well until the day of our departure, when once again, after being made "homeless" at 9:00am in the morning, the public toilets on board became unusable again.

The young lady, (Vanya) who cleaned our cabin worked tirelessly to keep our room clean and sanitized, but the smell of drainage and stale tobacco were always present.

However, there were some good points. The overall cleanliness of the ship was very good.

The dining room staff were very obliging, friendly and helpful, and made us feel welcome. The food was excellent , with plenty of variety. There was variety in excursions, although we had one cancelled for not very clear reasons.

I was a little disappointed in the lack of supervision in the pool areas, where signs were clearly marked that the Adult pool was for adults, when every time I looked there were children playing in the pool. I also noticed children using the sports equipment when again it was clearly stated that the use for adults only.

The Captains Gala evening was not quite as I had imagined. Another queuing event. Entertainment was generally of a good standard. The singing & dancing was very good. The fill in for the comedian's delay was excellent. The acting was OK.

The only other slight disappointment, was that the berths where the cruise ships dock are very uninspiring. On the two days we stayed on board, the outlook of rows and rows of containers was uninspiring to say the least.

This was our sixth cruise. Our previous trips have included the Emerald and Thompson Spirit.

Based on our other cruises, I would say the Destiny is a ship to avoid, and certainly we will never book on it again.

Most of the ship's facilities such as entertainment, waiter service etc are of the good standard which is common to these cruises. In other words, the standard expected - but nothing to gush on about particularly. The food in the dining room was very good and better than the Spirit. The cabins are small (much smaller than the Spirit) but adequate as you don't spend too much time in them.

We went on two excursions;- to Marrakesh and to Fire Mountain on Lanzarote. Both of these were memorable outings and quite reasonable value for money. Marrakesh is a long day (12 hours) but the destination is fascinating and the coach ride across the Atlas mountains is also an experience.

When we inquired about the trip to Mount Teide on Tenerife, it became apparent that this does not include going up the cable car to the summit-despite the blurb about "You can admire the awesome views". All you seem to get on this trip, is a coach ride to the bottom of the cable car and back again.

During the cruise 20th to October 27th the ship had two significant problems:-

1. The toilet system. 2. The management system.

Toilets. Toilets in many cabins ceased to work owing to problems with the vacuum disposal system. People without working toilets in their cabins had to go up two or three levels to use the public area toilets. After some people had been without cabin toilets for a couple of days the ship left port one evening and all of the public area toilets were also locked closed, as they had ceased to work. This left many people without a cabin toilet and without access to any other toilet on the ship. In other words, out at sea and with nowhere at all to go to the toilet. The staff at reception did not give any advice and no emergency arrangements were made.

The following day the captain stated that the problems had been solved. This was not true for every cabin.

On the last day, after departing passengers had given up their cabins at 9.00 a.m., all public toilets were closed down again at about 9.30 am. Once again, passengers waiting all day on the ship before evening departure flights, had no access to any toilet. This was done without warning, without any announcement, and without any apology.

Management. The response of the ship's management to the toilet problem always seemed to be "Too little too late". Ships' officers were reluctant to engage with passengers who had problems, there were very few announcements or advice, and they would clearly have preferred to deny the existence of the problem.

The motion of the ship was very bad even in quite light seas. Some people felt ill as a result. Many experienced passengers thought that the ship's stabilizers were not being used, and there was a rumour they were out of action. Once again there was no apology or explanation from the captain.

There were many children on the ship and certain rules were displayed for passenger convenience. For example, no children in the adult pool, and the gymnasium for over 16's only. The ship's staff made no effort to enforce these rules, with the result e.g. all the gymnasium equipment was at times used as play equipment by under 10's. Small children were running around the dance floor in the Oklahoma lounge and climbing about the furniture well after midnight, destroying it as an adult late-night venue.

I had the general impression that the management had no interest in, or care for, the passengers.

This was our 6th Thomson cruise - now been on all of the ships. The Destiny is a very nice ship, very clean and staff very friendly. Anthony in the Sky Bar was really nice and it is the best bar to drink in as you get the fantastic views.

Cabins are small, but we knew that before booking, as every holiday "comment" website you look on says exactly the same thing.

Breakfast was good and dinner excellent, but found the lunchtime food out on deck very poor. One of the cafes only did pizza, burgers, hot dogs with a couple of other dishes whereas the lido cafe did offer more choice but found the food was not very good. Didn't use the main restaurant at lunchtime so don't know what that was like.

Entertainment was rubbish. The other people on our table said exactly the same and we giggled every evening over that we thought of the previous evenings show. We all gave up going in the end. (I even fell asleep during one show which shows how bad it was!). The best shows were the two comedians who were very funny.

Trips are very expensive, but then always are, so no surprises there either.

As for having to put your luggage out the evening before you leave this is standard practice on all cruises. Certainly P&O do exactly the same. No problem seeing the midnight show. You pack before you have dinner, just leave out the things you need for the next morning and simply put your things in the case at the end of the evening.

Overall would recommend this ship to anyone and we had a very relaxing two weeks.
