We have just returned from 2 weeks holiday in Thassos. We stayed at the Socrates Plaza in Skala Prinou. This was our second visit to Thassos. We stayed at the Socrates same time last year.George, the owner,is very helpful and friendly.Arti, the barman,is lovely and great fun.The rooms are spotless, the daily maid service is excellent. The Socrates is situated in an idyllic spot right on the beach with a fantastic view. The rear of the hotel faces mountains with various species of birds to be seen.
Best places we found to eat were The Nest(hello to Nickos, mom and dad).Nickos speaks excellent English(with all the accents).Zorbas is also very good(hello to Kostos and Ellie)
The local bus service is excellent and inexpensive. The market in Prinou on Mondays is worth a visit. If you go have a coffee in cafe Spiffero,George the owner makes the best frappe in Thassos.Just tell him Tom from England sent you!!
On Saturdays there is a big market in Kavala which you travel to by the Dolphin or the ferry from Skala Prinou.Thassos town is worth a visit its just 1 euro 80 cents by bus.
The transfer from Kavala airport to your hotel in Thassos is stress free.Your luggage is taken from you at the airport and the next time you see it is at your hotel.Don't know is just a service Thomson provide or if all tour operators do the same.
Look forward to our next holiday in Thassos!!

First time to anywhere in Greece and boy was we (my wife and I ), impressed.Socretes Apartments were superb, only loses a point because of slightly high bar prices and having to pay for sunbeds! Apart from that, if you are reading this and have booked to go there, you will love it! George, the owner is very helpful, and the barman, Arty, is a hoot! Lovely and clean at all times.

We chose the Socrates Plaza out of the Thomson brochure and, on reading other comments on this website, thought we might just have found a little treasure. How right we were! This hotel exceeded all our expectations - spotlessly clean, so friendly and right on the beach. George and Arti couldn't have done more for us to make it a truly memorable 2 weeks. My daughter (20) is a very critical 'holidayer' and has actually asked if we can go back again. The beach is small but beautifully sandy and clean - the water warm and clear with fishes nibbling your toes. The village is also small and quite quiet but we didn't have a bad meal in any of the half dozen tavernas that we tried. The bus service into Thassos is regular and cheap, but Thassos itself is very busy and very touristy at night. One word of warning - don't book any of the Thomson trips. We did the cruise and BBQ which was exceptionally poor value. Twice the price of organising it yourself, small boat with no room to sunbathe, no explanation of where we were or what we were passing - so just do it yourself, there are loads of boats going out of Thassos old harbour on a daily basis and I am sure you could just turn up and go. And whilst you are at the Old Harbour, eat at Simi's. Star meal of the holiday, the seafood pasta for 2. We will be going back!

I agreed entirely with Mr Ward's comments we were staying at the Socrates when the bikers decended. They started arriving on the Tuesday evening and from then onwards it was a nightmare. I am very angry with Thomsons and very sorry for the people who were only there a week as they virtually only had 2 days of peace and quiet. Thomsons denied they knew about this until a fortnight before but the locals were aware of this since Christmas. As the Thomsons rep. lived and was married to a Greek (biker) on Thassos she obviously wasn't doing her job properly if she was unaware of the rally. Something on this scale was not organised overnight.
The Socrates is a nice Hotel and a lovely location, however, getting a sunbed was a nightmare as certain guests were up at a ridiculous hour putting towels on the sunbeds and a lot of guests objected to pay 4 euros for sun beds round the pool, especially as it was only the English people that had to pay. This added another £50 plus on your holiday. Sometimes you only wanted an odd hour to relax but you still had to pay for them.

My low rating in no way reflects the socrates hotel in skala prinou, which was modern, comfortable and extremely friendly. George the owner is an outstanding host and deserves special mention. The island itself is beatiful, the people are friendly and under normal conditions is the ideal place to rest and relax.
Unfortunatley for myself and fellow guests, it turned into a nightmare and all but ruined the holiday. The reason behind this was an extended weekend motor bike festival held in Skala Prinou which began gradually on the first Thursday of our holiday with hundreds of motor bikes arriving on the ferries and tailed off gradually on the Monday with the bikers queuing at the ferry terminal to go home. The noise and number of bikes began to build up during Thursday daytime. There then followed approximately 72 hours of unmitigated racket virtually 24 hours a day which at its peak sounded as though the very gates of hell had been opened. The resort practically became a no go area for non-bikers (unless they were either very brave or very deaf) and because of the close proximity of the hotel it was impossible to relax or sleep during the day or the night. There were thousands of bikes of all shapes and sizes which endlessly revved, accellerated, backfired, skidded and invaded just about every single track, path and road in and outside the resort (including the beach). Several people were killed (unconfirmed numbers). The buses on occasions could not access the resort and walking around any of the paths or roads became unaaceptably dangerous due to the gung-ho attitude some of the bikers and almost complete absence of any supervision or organisation. This event according to local people is repeated every year in different locations, but none of the holiday makers or holiday representatives we spoke to had any idea that the event was taking place. Overall a shameful event which stained our holiday idellibly.

Just returned from our absolutely brilliant holiday at Socrates Plaza. It was perfect from start to finish, also helped by the great organisation courtesy of Thomson who made it stress free, and a special mention for the rep Emmajane who was superb and nothing was too much trouble who also told us about Pachis beach which was a short bus ride away and a real gem.
My wife and I went on two Thomson excursions, The Macedonia Experience which was a really interesting day out including a visit to the Alistati caves which were spectacular. The other excursion was the Walk and Brunch which was great helped by Rose our guide who was informative as well as very funny.
George the owner and Arti the barman were both great fun and the hotel fantastic would recommend it to anyone. Best places to eat we thought were Dasaki which was a fifteen minute walk from the hotel past the boatyard, the swordfish was superb as well as everything else and Vicky's bar which is on the beach is also good run by a friend of George's called Michael who is great. All in all a great time and can't wait to go back again to this beautiful island.

I have just returned from 2 weeks in Thassos - Fantastic. Our flight from Gatwick landed early, followed by a smooth journey on coach and ferry to Thassos - very well organised.
The Socrates Hotel was lovely, you are treated as a friend rather than a guest, the owner George and his family were so helpful and very friendly. The hotel itself is small with about 35 rooms which is really nice if your looking for a relaxed holiday. The rooms are very clean and by Greek standards quite large and well decorated. Kitchen facilities are limited, but a toaster, kettle and hob are provided.
A beach view room makes your holiday - a wonderful view of mainland Greece across the sea. Lovely pool and the beach right on your doorstep, the beach is narrow but clean and the sea is clear and no more than 1m in depth for about 75metres!
The resort is small with under 10 restaurants but all providing very yummy food, in particular the Nest and Zorba's - local supermarket is good - Newspapers available. We hired a car, a trip to Thassos Town, round the Island and up the Mountains is definately recommended.
Only negative is that you had to pay for sunbeds round the pool and on the beach and for air conditioning in the room, a sunbed is 2.50 Euros and air con 5 Euros per night, not overly expensive but does add up and needs to be factored in to your budget.
Would definitely recommend it and I will be returning!

Myself and my husband booked last min as we both needed a rest from work and we were hoping for a nice quiet resort and that’s what we got.
This resort and hotel is great all you would expect for a relaxing holiday by the beach. The hotel is very clean and the staff are very nice. Arti the bar man was a great laugh.
Rooms are clean and basic all you need really, the pool and the lovely beach right outside the hotel makes for a great relaxing holiday.
The nest restaurant is the best on the island with a good range of food and great service.
We enjoyed our holiday so much we intend to return next year with our grandchildren as we feel they would be quite safe on the lovely beach.

We had a fantastic time at this hotel. The view from the room was lovely; we had a sea view which I enjoyed very much.
The pool area is very nice however if you do want a sunbed you had to get up at a ridiculous time in the morning as the same people thought that they owned the sunbeds, and would get them every day, people were even seen putting towels on sunbeds before they went to sleep, so you had no chance of getting a good sun bed.
However the people who work at the hotel more than make up for it, George and Arti are very funny and very friendly.
Arti took my boyfriend scuba diving at a beach closer to the town and they had a great time. George also asks younger stayers if they would like to accompany him and arti to the open air night club that they drive down to on a Saturday night.
The local area is very nice, I have to say I did not enjoy the food as much as Skiathos island, as on this island it was much more basic. Much of the restaurants served the same food. I would avoid the first restaurant that you come to when leaving the Socrates, the dolphin, was not very nice food at all.
The nest is a nice place to eat and the people are very friendly, we also enjoyed food at Zorbas and panorama, there are many outside bars where you can sit and watch everyone walk buy, very cosy and very cheap.
We were expecting the prices here to be the same as Skiathos island but they were much cheaper. Also at dinner time the food at the hotel is very nice if you can’t be bothered moving very far. The quiz and bbq on a Friday is a must, the food is gorgeous, and it is a lot of fun.
Would return to this hotel again but would visit the town a lot more to find some new restaurants.

We stayed here from 15th may 2011 for one week, ifyou want a quiet stress free holiday this is the place, the manager George, and the rest of the staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean and ideal for self-catering,we did find the mattress on the bed pretty hard, otherwise ok,and the rooms are cleaned every day to a very good standard. The rest of the Plaza is really nice and modern and comfortable, poolside bar great, providing snacks and food that are reasonable and good.
The Plaza is right on the beach, step out onto the beach , turn left and its a five minute walk to all of the tavernas, bars etc, we tried tne Nest and other tavernas but found that Larous was the best for us,personal attention from the chef Laskarina telling us what was fresh and on the menu that evening,(it was food cooked with love)we recommend it.We decided we wanted to see m ore of this beautiful island,so i checked out the local car hire companies, and the best deal came from Yannis at Hertz,it was the cheapest, and not only that Yannis is a mint of local information,he marks off on a map they provide of all the places you should try and visit whilst on Thassos, another recommendation. All in all a great holidayG
