Love Torquay. If you haven't been before you must see it.Stayed at the Kistor for three nights. Very dated, but if your over 60 it would be just like home. Room was clean, but basic,so take shower gel and bisuits, any home comfort. Parking is limited, and staff ok as long... more

Don't go!
We stayed in Hotel Kistor for a few days break and were thoroughly disappointed. The hotel needs total refurbishment. We stayed in an attic room which was extremely hot and stuffy, with no ceiling fan. The rooms are poorly lit and there are steps everywhere. I would not recommended it for those with disabilities. It was questionable where fire escapes were due to lack of signposting. THe lights in the bathroom did not work due to a fault (there were no windows in the bathroom either). When we requested a room change, the manager was rude and abrupt, point blank refusing our request. When the lights were supposedly "fixed" they would not switch off. The photo's are very deceptive. This looks to be a luxury hotel, however I would only rate this hotel as 2*or below. It was very disappointing for the price. The only plus points were that the food was ok and it was a good location (on the flat).
Management response from bingoace 17 Mar 2010

I remember this guest well. I am sorry that this report was filed as it does not provide a true reflection upon the circumstances or indeed the events surrounding the complaints. Yes, the pull switch in the bathroom needed to given a firm tug and was replaced the following day as this was only brought to my attention after the maintenance team had left. The rooms are not fitted with ceiling fans but we are happy to lend desk fans from reception. Fortunately, and in most cases we are congratulated for the fact that we achieve over 90% room occuppancy which on this particular occassion is why I had no alternative but to refuse your request for a room change, we were full again! Whilst I can appreciate that you were not happy the tone of this review is not a true and fair portrayal especially as you were expecting at least a three star rated hotel. We are a two star, albeit one that is getting better all the time. As regards to Fire Escape signage we not only meet legal requirements but we exceed them. We are currently engaged in a major redecoration program both in our bedrooms and our grounds. It is our intention to bring back the WOW Factor. I do hope we succeed & that you'll enjoy holidays with us in the future.

worst hotel stay in my life
dated decor depressing worst hotel i have ever stayed in. some staff needed retraining to be honest when they totaly ignore clients at bar. food poor quality no taste.hotel needs to be shut down refubished new menu and intensive staff training. overall i thought i had booked into a old peoples home by mistake.be very afraid if you dare to book .
What a great break
After a long depressing winter me and my misus decided to have a few days i n Torquay so we set off from Bolton. After what seemed like a lfetime (motorways hate them) we arrived about 4 oclock and passed the Kistor looked ok and advertised vacancies. My misus went in and secured us a room at a good price.OK the room was not the Hilton but was clean warm and bed comfortable. After a brew a nap and a shower we went for tea(or dinner as they say down south) good food plenty of it waiter served. After tea live entertainment with the inevitable game of bingo which only lasted 20 mins thank god.Different turn every night with a bit of dancing if you wanted bar open 24 hours if you required we went to bed at 12 tired well fed and relaxed having enjoyed our evening. Next morning had a good old fry up while the misus watching figure had cereal and fruit. Nice indoor pool and sauna did not pack swimmers but will in july when we have booked for a week. The whole 4 days were smashing we also had good weather but if not sure we would have still enjoyed it as all the staff could not do enough for is. If you want a value for money break in this economic climate look no further Norman &Jane Skein Ladybridge Bolton Lancs
Reunion Weekend
I have stayed at the Kistor twice now and will be returning both shortly and again next year for a reunion weekend. The rooms do need updating a bit but they are comfortable enough. The public areas are good and the hotel is clean throughout. The entertainment is good and the staff are friendly and helpful. Also, the hotel is near to the seafront.
rip off bar
£4.00 a pint for lime and lemonade!!! NUFF SAID!!!
Depressing Devon
A downmarket, dated and depressing hotel even in the sun. The dinner was appalling: the soup was gelatinous and had dried vegetables in it; the roast had almost disappeared under what was supposed to be gravy; the cheese and biscuits consisted of two minute pieces of cheese and 5 biscuits. Thankfully breakfast was alot better. The only thing in favour of the restaurant was the staff, they were cheerful but everything was done at a pace so you had no time to digest the food. The rooms were dated and ours was minute, looking as if it had once been a single as there was only one bedside light and consequently only one switch. The carpet was bare in places. The furnishings and wall paper were all very dated. However it was clean. I would never want to stay there again.
Great staff but the hotel needs thorough refurbishment
We have just returned from a weeks holiday at the Kistor Hotel. We booked this hotel after seeing the outside and what it had to offer, when in Torquay last year. The first room we were given, on arrival, was pokey and badly needed a thorough refurbishment. The shower curtain was badly stained and the whole room looked shabby. We requested a change of room and were given a family room. This was bigger and in a slightly better condition. The staff were great and the entertainment quite good and, as stated by previous reviewers, Peter, the manager calls the best bingo ever!! The food was OK, nothing to write home about and you felt very rushed at meal times, as the waiters were almost running around the dining room. The swimming pool was great and, as it was outside school holidays, fairly quiet. We enjoyed the holiday but the hotel really needs a thorough overall. I am afraid we will not be going back until it has one.
Needs up dating
The reception & public areas of this hotel are ok! but the bedrooms are in need of a serious up date, the beds and furniture are really worn and need replacing
great entertainment
Great entertainment. All the acts were live no disco thank goodness! The manager calls the best bingo ever, fun even if you hate bingo! Food good quality, fast friendly service. Nice sea view in the bedroom though decoration and furniture a little dated. Lovely warm pool and what atreat to have both a saune and jaccuzzi in a two star hotel, true luxury! I was speaking to a dutch couple who play bowls at the green opposite, they have been staying at the Kistor for 20 consecutive years and had nothing but praise. I go along with that. A truely friendly hotel. I recommend this to all visitors wanting a value for money trip to the english riviera!
This Hotel refused to help two of us who are disabled with an accessible room
We booked this Hotel through a Coach Holiday Firm and were told that we would get a room on a low floor, because the Hotel only had two floors. The Coach Firm advertised the Hotel Kistor as a 3 Star Hotel, but when we arrived, it was a run down 2 Star Hotel. There was no twin bedded room on a low floor for us, even though it had been officially requested and agreed upon, two months earlier when we booked the holiday. We were shown to an attic room up five or six flights of stairs, (the only lift was broken.) There were no handrails on the dangerous stairs. The room was very small and contained one 4' wide bed for two disabled people. As there was no room for one of us to sleep on the floor even, we asked for an alternative room, but this was refused. We had to leave and book into another Hotel and pay again. No refund of our cancelled stay has been made. All contact with us is refused by the Hotel.
