" Stayed at the Smaragdi for 1 week in... "
Submitted By: Mrs J CWe hired a car for a couple of days and think Perissa was the better resort but weren't that impressed with Santorini as a whole, we do like Greece and have been to much better islands than this, the scenery is quite nice but don't bother with the sunset in Oia not really worth the hassle of getting there and they do rip you off for the food in the harbour. I would also recommend locking your suitcases with a padlock and security belts as the airport staff do seem very interested in what is in your cases and when we arrived home we were missing items which resulted in the hassle of making an insurance claim. All in all it was an ok place but wouldn't be returning in a hurry.

" This was an excellent place to stay.... "
Submitted By: J CThere were always spaces by the pool which was spotless and the complex is about 2 mins from the beach. A really friendly and helpful staff I would go back again with no problems.
There were tavernas galore along the beach for the evening meal and so much to see. The local busses all seemed to connect via thira but they were a good way to get to those places you just have to visit.
The sunsets in thira and are breathtaking and the caldera is a must. But it was just too tempting to lay by the pool or pop down to the sea to need to venture too far further. (Also gives me other things to see next time I visit).

" Well over all a fantastic holiday, I... "
Submitted By: karl_31Santorini is everything that I could have wished for peaceful and relaxing. Staying at the Smaragdi is again everything you could want in a holiday; in fact it made the holiday.
The staff are, more than fantastic, and it has to be said Maria and Stamos you did yourself proud.
We went to the island to see two very good friends of ours getting married and had a great time. It’s got to be said again Maria and Stamos ‘Thank you’ This was the first wedding that the hotel had held, and boy oh boy was it a fab wedding.
All 42 of us that travelled over, had a ball and could have not asked any more. For a family run hotel they went over and above the call of duty, and made sure it was a day to remember and it was.
Upon arrival we were met by Maria, with the room key waiting and Stamos ready to take us to our rooms. Where he went through everything in the room safe, air con e.g. and there was even a bottle of water in the fridge for our first night.
The apartments are very clean and very comfortable. Rooms are cleaned alternate days, along with towels and beds.
The pool and bar area are open from early morning till late, and offer great food/drink at great prices, so you don’t even have to leave the hotel if you didn’t want to, but you would be missing out on seeing a great island. There are plenty of sun beds around the pool so you don’t have to worry about getting up early to run down to put your towel out!
The area around the hotel offers some great places to eat and a good nightlife if you want that kind of thing. The beach bar is a must but doesn’t really get started till about 1am and keeps going until the early hours. The beach of Perivolos is a black sand beach and is only a 2minute walk, with plenty of beds umbrellas.
For many of the people in the hotel including many of our group is wasn’t the first or the last time they were at the Smaragdi, and it won’t be mine either, over all a great holiday with great people, in a fantastic hotel. It really is a must visit.

" If you love the Greek Islands but... "
Submitted By: Mrs H RouthWe have always travelled with Kosmar - the rooms allocated to Kosmar are basic but very clean ( maids clean and change linen every other day) . Each room has a small patio area outside. Next year however we plan to book direct with the hotel - upgraded rooms are on the 1st and second floors, are more spacious and have a private balcony.
The best thing about the Smaragdi however is the staff. The hotel is family run - Maria and Stamos are quite simply the best hosts you could ever wish for. They are the reason why numerous people return to the Smaragdi year after year. We now have friends all over the UK and Europe who we have met up with on our return each year. Stamos is a natural born comedian and will make you laugh all holiday - Maria his wife
Is an absolute delight and cannot do enough to ensure you enjoy your holiday to the full.
When you visit Santorini make sure you see the Caldera at least once. Both Thira and Oia are definitely worth a visit. We also recommend Senoir Zorbas Mexican Restaurant which is on route to Thira in an amazing location overlooking the Caldera. It serves excellent Mexican and Greek food which is reasonably priced considering its location.

" We had the best holiday we've had for... "
Submitted By: Mrs E S SmithThe apartments are very clean and very comfortable - especially for Greece.
Stamos and Maria are excellent hosts and make you feel very welcome and at home.
The apartments are in an ideal spot with a restaurant/bar on the sea front - a couple of hundred yards away, and many more within a 10 minute walk.
There is also a bakery and a couple of supermarkets within short walking distance. One of which, the Big Co-op, will give you a free lift back with your shopping!
The food at the Smaragdi is very nice and reasonably priced, as are the drinks. If you didn't want to venture any further than the pool/bar throughout your holiday, you don't need to, although you would be missing out on a lovely island.
The Greek night on Saturdays is well worth going to. The entertainment, by Stamos and the rest of the staff, is brilliant and the food is very good. You get a free Smaragdi Hotel baseball cap too!
There are also occasionally quiz nights and there is always background music.
The Smaragdi is very popular, and when we were there, there were lots of "regulars" who have been going there for many years.
All-in-all a wonderful place for those wanting a relaxing holiday.

" If the ratings would allow I would... "
Submitted By: Mrs K Smith-EcclesThe room itself was spacious and spotlessly clean with both ceiling fan and air conditioning. We even had a shower curtain ( a curiosity in Greece)! Bottled water was in the fridge. The hotel itself is beautiful and set in lovely gardens. The pool is fab and the sunbeds comfortable and plentiful. But the best thing of all are the staff. It is a family owned hotel and all of them couldn’t do enough for us and indeed all of the guests. The star of the show is Stamos who I think is quite famous (or infamous) locally. With the looks of Nicholas Cage and the craziness of Jim Carrey he is a delight!! For all of the above reasons people return to the Smaragdi year after year and we have already booked our return. In fact we will be taking our friends with us next time. Santorini itself is wonderful. We fell in love with it - especially Thira. When I first saw the Caldera Sea from the top I thought it the most beautiful thing I had ever set eyes on and Thira itself is a very pretty and lively town.
This is a very diverse island and the mixture of ancient and modern live very happily side by side. Although very small we were never stuck for something to do and we didn’t get to do it all in the two weeks we were there so still plenty to see next time. I can't recommend this holiday enough. The only down side was the journey home. Instead of a direct flight we had to go to Crete and wait there for our plane t be re-fuelled. However it wasn’t bad enough to put us off going again.
All in all the perfect holiday. We truly did forget our cares and worries while we were there.
Go for it!

" Santorini is an island of... "
Submitted By: Mrs S GarrattWhether you arrive by air or sea you are immediately struck by the volcanic cliffs of red brown rock topped by clusters of gleaming white sugar cube homes and villages – likened to the icing on a cake. Its volcanic sheer cliffs, which rise straight from the deep blue sea, are layer upon layer of red volcanic rock within which clear strata can be seen.
The opposing side of the island in contrast gently slopes down to the sea and its black sand beaches, which is where Perissa is situated.
The contrasts between the deep blue of the sea , the azure of the sky and the redness of the rocks provides a dramatic and fascinating landscape which graces many a photograph.
This year saw our 4th visit to the island staying at Smaragdi as we have done previously. However this time we stayed in the annexe, which is situated across the road from the main buildings and pool area, a small walled area of 6 dwellings, each of a different size.
As stated before the complex is family run and the owners live adjacent to the property. As always their friendliness and help was exemplary.
The complex, which is of ‘A’ class, was built in 1996 in traditional Cycladic style, whitewashed buildings with thick walls to keep out the fierce heat of the day each with cool stone flooring and covered patio areas providing welcome shade.
The main complex encircles the pool and is surrounded by lush picturesque gardens “an oasis in the hot hours” as the Smaragdi brochure rightly states!
The pool which is filled with seawater is kept beautifully clean and well maintained; and has ample sunbeds and umbrellas. Alongside the pool is the outdoor bar area where (mainly) English pop music is played, with plenty of tables and parasols. Food, which is good value and appetising, and drinks are served all day, and there is a daily Happy Hour(!) between 6 and 8 when beer is reduced and cocktails are half-price. There is also an indoor bar area and breakfast room adjacent to reception where there is a very well stocked lending library for guests use.
A large screen TV is brought out for important sporting events but it is thankfully not left on the entire time. They host a weekly Greek Night on Sundays with a barbeque and traditional islands dancing.
The annexe, which is reached by an attractive cobbled pathway and has its own pretty gardens has the advantage of having separate single patios, with table & chairs, the only thing missing there was a clothes drying rack or washing line.
The rooms are large and more airy than the main studios and have matching furniture of dark wood, the kitchenette area is separate to the main studio room, and although small, are well appointed with a modern fridge with icebox and 2ring electric hob, crockery and cutlery is plentiful and matching, the only suggestion I would make is to take a travel kettle since the hob takes an absolute age to boil water for a drinks. A lovely touch was the provision of a litre of water in the fridge on our arrival since it is not advisable to drink the water from the taps owing to its high mineral content.
The room also has a safe (you pay for the key at reception), air conditioning (the remote control to enable its use is obtained at reception for a fee), a freestanding fan, TV and hairdryer.
The diminutive, newly tiled bathroom had an extremely powerful shower with hot water any time of the day and a shower curtain. Remember this is Greece and toilet paper must go into the small bin and not down the pan!
The apartments are spotless and are cleaned alternate days – even the day before you go home , and lines & towels are changed every cleaning day, the cleaners even washed and ironed my small hair towel for me on a couple of occasions.
The beach of Perivolos with its black sand is a couple of minutes walk away.
There are plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas, prices seem to be mainly 2.50 euros per person daily, some places provide the sunbeds free if you patronise their establishments.
On talking to other holidaymakers most will return one day and will return to Smaragdi, we certainly will, and surely word of mouth and personal recommendation is the best advertising they can get!

Submitted By: Miss L CowburnAlthough a beautiful island I would not recommend it as the Greek people here are not very friendly.
Geographically, the island is very sparse and not at all beautiful in land.
The capital, Thira is a trendy spot with amazing views but extremely expensive.
I would never travel with Kosmar again.
