This was an expensive hotel (£6000 for two weeks) for 4. It fell far short of our expectations. There is a huge and noisy building site next door, which starts at 7am and goes on to 7pm. No sea view from our room. No bathrobes or welcome bowl of fruit. Broken air con,... more

This hotel truely is fabulous, especially for families. The accommodation is good, rooms are very clean and of a good size, all with a nice balcony. If you have a room on the ground floor, the terraces have a little gate, which makes them ideal for people with disabilities... more

great atmosphere
i stayed in this hotel for about three weeks. in my opinion, it is very big. because of that people who like it quite will enjoy it. the enormes pool and the big garden puts you in the holiday feeling. and if you like the sea- its just 20 meters away. i enjoyed my stay- thanks to the friendly staff
Fantastic holiday in a fantastic hotel
We have just come back from one week's holiday at the Iberostar Grand Hotel Anthelia, the nicest 4 star in the area (in our opinion) as it turned out, on a half board basis. We booked an ordinary room on the third floor with fantastic sea view and close to the pool and restaurant in the hopes that our baby call would work (digital). The room was large enough to comfortably fit 3 beds (our daughter is almost 3 so likes a big bed), had satellite tv, minibar, large balcony facing the heated pool and the sea, large bathroom with bath and shower, a/c etc. Babysitting is available at 12 euros per hour but we didn't use it. The hotel has a mini club for children from 4 years and upwards - but they were happy to have our daughter join in if one of us accompanied her. We paid nothing for the service, and she got a lot out of it. She drew one morning, painted her own t-shirt one afternoon, had her face painted one afternoon, and played in the fully equipped outdoor playground. They organised a children's disco at 8:30 every evening, and a life sized dog called Smiley came out and hugged the children. They all adored him! The hotel has 4 pools, one huge one, one heated one that our room overlooked, and 2 children's pools. The heated pool wasn't as warm as we'd expected, but we all swam most days and when the sun was shining, it was heated up quickly. The weather was sunny/cloudy while we were there – it averages around 21 degrees there at that time of year, but we had some cold days at about 15 degrees. When it is raining or cold there is very little to do at the hotel/beach. When the sun shone it felt very warm indeed, hot enough to sunbathe but it just wasn't reliable enough to do all day. The food was fabulous!!! Breakfast and dinner was buffet style, but beautifully done. A lot of foods were available made to order such as fillet steaks, seafood; and there was champagne and caviar and smoked salmon for breakfast everyday if you wanted it. The service was impeccable and the staff were all so friendly with the children. A word of warning, the dress-code for evenings was quite smart and men wore shirts in the restaurant and women were often in glitzy gowns. As we booked half board, we ate lunches out or in the pizzeria at the poolside. Optionally you can upgrade your evening meal to the a la carte restaurant for a small charge, but we never did that as the main restaurant was so wonderful. The hotel is right at the sea side with two beaches on either side. By far the nicest beach is Playa del Duque with nice cafes and restaurants. It is a five minute walk away. In the other direction are cheap cafes and shops catering towards the package holidaymaker. We didn't do any sightseeing as our aim was a "relax and stay at the hotel" kind of holiday. However, there are lots of things to do like a boat trip to see the whales, funicular up to Tiede, Spain's highest peak which was snow capped whilst we were there, diving and other watersports, parachuting, golf, waterpark etc. Our daughter napped in the room for an hour or so everyday, and our baby call worked so we could sit at the pool and sunbathe – luxury! In the evenings, we put her to bed just after the disco and sat on the balcony and played cards until she was asleep. 2 nights we sneaked downstairs to see shows, a fantastic professional flamenco show and a fun musical variety show peformed by the animation team. The baby call unfortunately didn't work that far away, but my husband checked on our daughter every 30 mins. In summary, we loved the holiday. The hotel was fantastic and provided everything we wished for. The only downside was the unreliability of the weather, although we came home with suntans.
gr8t hotel
having just returned from this hotel as part of a travel agents educational, i would defo not have any problems with sending any of my clents to this hotel the staff were all very very helpfull could not do enough for you. i had a problem with my sink n the bathroom and within 15min of me reporting the problem the sink was fixed!! the rooms are all very nice and clean they have plenty of space as well. the pools are not to crouded and there is no fights over sunloungers!! the lobbie is so different from anything that i have ever seen before it is so big and bright the piano gets played in the corner which is so relaxing. the security in this hotel is also good you cant get nto the main part of the hotel unless you have a key card and also a few nights i noticed security guards walking around the hotel. There is also direct access to the beach through a gate at the bottom of the hotel which you can only use if again you have a key card. I was there for 4 days and the bedding and towels were changed twice during my stay. All in all i would recomend this hotel and would give it more a 5* than a 4 star. if you would like any more info on this hotel send me an e-mail and i will be more than happy to help if i can.
One of the best ever
What a hotel. We have just returned from a fortnights stay. I was sceptical having read some of the reviews on this site and even attempted to switch my booking. Thank goodness I did not. There is nothing to criticise - the food is fantastic, the animation team probably the best in over 70 holidays in five star hotels in the last ten years. The accomodation is spotless, the rooms spacious and noise free. Add to that fantastic views , wonderful warm and firendly staff, beautiful grounds and you have the almost perfect holiday. Couple that with the fact that the hotel is so large that you have the illusion of privacy and peace all the time. The location is fine for walks and other activities. Excursions are plentiful and reasonably priced. Dont miss Raffles ( a unique show - I wont spoil it by telling you what will happen , but believe me it is not to be missed. Add to that one of the many whale watch expeditions (magical), and you have the perfect holiday. Some people have said the animation was amateurish - I found quite the reverse - with them providing shows from Vampira (a gothic rock extravaganza to Celtic Pride ( a river dance tribute) - all brilliant. The interspersed bought shows are great - Supremes and Beatles tribute especially.
A Hotel not too be missed! Fantastic stay!!!!!!!!!
This was our third time at this hotel. All I can say is it is fantastic! I am fairly hard to please as we run three highly rated hotels in the UK with aproximately 200 rooms and a restaurant serving food of a 3 AA Rosettes standard. We are talking about Tenerife and a large chain of hotels under the Iberostar banner and whilst the food is very acceptable, it is not gastronomic and i would not expect it to be. The hotel is great, and the staff very accommodating, especially the Animation team led by Sergio. We have stayed at the Grand Anthelia three times and are going back in October for a fourth visit, this should say it all. The hotel is ideal for families and the staff very friendly, apart from Reception where it is efficient yet a little cooler in the approach, which is fairly normal at a busy desk. My daughter who is 6 did not want to go anywhere else as the mini club is first rate, with games, activities and all carried out with a very caring approach, followed by a medal at the mini disco in the evening if they have won. After the mini disco there is a mixture of weekly entertainment, one night will be an amateur show by the animation team which is on the whole extremely entertaining and the other nights with fairly professional acts which are normally very entertaining. We always book an executive room which is larger with a huge bay window and larger balcony and always ask for a room on a higher floor as the views down the coast to Las Americas are fantastic. The hotel is in a very nice and quiet area with great walks just outside the bottom gate. The pools are very nice (one small and heated, ideal for children and the other much larger but not heated) . Whilst I do not enjoy too many activities, the animation team during the day try to involve you and if you dont wish to join in you don't have to. After catering for over 400 people a day at home I prefer to listen to my ipod and while the time away in the sun. Please go, and don't read the take too much notice of the negative reviews, the majority are very positive and as I said I am not easy to please, but this hotel really is first class. Thank you Iberostar.
Go, Go, Go!!!! It does what it says on the tin!!!!
We have literally just got back (as in yesterday...) from this hotel. Due to some of the previous comments we were apprehensive about our stay as it was our honeymoon. All I can say is that we needn't have worried, and I'm afraid that in my opinion the comments running the hotel and the ameneties down are WAY off mark!!. Sure there is building work across from the hotel but this does not impact in any way and we spoke to guests who have been for 3 years running who say this work actually started 3 years ago..... The hotel is superb...absolutely 1st class. The food is to die for. We went when the hotel was fully booked and it didn't feel crowded, there were sunloungers to spare (just get up 10 mins early and sneak the towels on...) and the staff just couldn't do enough. The previous reviewer from Yorkshire got it right, and I agree with their comments too.. People were enquiring about booking for next year when we left so it aint that bad is it!!!! Costa Adeje is lovely (and was completely free from 'aggressive touts' outside the hotel....) Do be prepared to barter with just about everyone (apart from restaraunts) and if you have long hair go with the flow and get it braided...!!! hey...it's a holiday enjoy yourself! The beer in the hotel is quite expensive....so either drink it and don't moan or walk about 400mtrs to the nearest shop and buy cheap stuff to drink in the room....we did both. I cannot speak highly enough of this hotel and the staff, any queries anyone needs answering then you can email me at lesalamos88@yahoo.co.uk. I can only speak as I find and this was a fantastic (expensive) holiday... Oh, if you DO find you are craving something plain and substantial try Bentleys English restaurant on the seafront.....yummy food.
Very mixed opinion! Detailed description, well worth reading.
I've just returned back from a week staying in what seems to be a absolutely fantastic hotel. When we arrived we were left speechless, the lobby, is absolutely fantastic! We walked in at around 10:30pm, the piano was being played quietly in the corner and I had a smile like no other. After checking in the bell rang for the bell boy to collect out bags and we followed him to our room through all the very very glamerous surroundings. The bell boy turned to leave without me offering a tip which impressed me as were all used to them hanging around for the tip. I had to call him back to tip him. We unpacked and unwound... infact as soon as the bell boy left the room I literally jumped for joy, it was a dream holiday, in a dream surrounding, and I thought NOTHING could be better. The next morning we headed down the lovely marble stairs to the restaurant.. it was very spacious, and fresh looking. But here is where the first of a trend of negatives arose. We walked into the restaurant, and pondered around.. we were completely unsure of where to sit, or whether we were allowed to.. there were no reserved tables, and you literally just walked in and picked a spot... It made my girlfriend and I feel a bit on edge because we didn't want Herman the German to come and claim were sitting in his seat. This negative was soon forgotten as soon as I saw there was at least 7 different types of freshly squeezed fruit juices! I was gobsmacked to see that you could have caviat (sp) salmon, and champagne for breakfast! (I did have a glass but only for the novelty) We headed to the 1st pool we found but were disapointed as it was located in the centre of the hotel, so there was no view. We moved to the salt water pool which was very nice. It was here where the next negative arose! whilst relaxing with a book around the pool on marched the entertainment staff, informing us of water polo or something.. this was a trend that occured at least 3 times every day! it was extremely annoying as I wasn't interested in any sports.. I'd seen them advertised and knew what time they were on, and if I was interested i'd have taken part.. I didn't need the entertainment staff to come around me every few hours to pester me into playing darts. The Entertainment was also the next negative, I used to work as an entertainer at a 5 star resort, so I knew all about the business. I expected a good quality of entertainment as is often the case from in house teams.. I was SHOCKED when the poor excuse for entertainment began, an awful, hideous, rendition of a cabaret show which was absolutely horrifically mimed meant my girlfriend and I left as soon as we had finished our drinks... Drinks was the next negative.. The hotel seemed to have a split personality, the nice side that welcomed you to help yourself to as many portions as you liked, and brought a free bottle of champagne to my room for my girlfriends birthday... and then the bad side which tried to scam money out of you in every way posible... the drinks were extortionate, and they tried cheap tricks of giving you extremely salty peanuts with your order so you became thirsty again. I was anxious as to whether to use the Air con in my room because I feared it may charge me. All in all the hotel is fantastic, the staff although a little annoying mean well, they are a completely different type of workers to those in thsi country and when they're working show no sign of discontent. Although the waiting staff nick your plate the second you munch your last mouthful. I'd put the negative points of Anthelia down to poor senior management, everything is run supremely but I imagine the drinks are a huge revenue and thus they use this to their advantage. 3 days into our holiday as we walked into the restaurant we were shown to a table and told how the system works.. (I think they thought we had just arrived) only 3 days late. I wouldn't go to the hotel again, although only because of how much I was frustrated by teh extremely annoying entertainment staff of poor talent. Other than that, its a dream of a hotel.
A quality 4* hotel
Having just returned from a week at this hotel, I feel that I have to write the following points about the hotel. Having read all the reviews prior to going to the hotel, I agree that I was most concerned about what had been said to the extent that I contacted our tour operator and travel agent to initially ask to be moved to another hotel. Having spoken to the tour operator who also contacted their representatives in Tenerife we decided to continue with our holiday. When we arrived at the hotel we were checked-in in the most friendly manner I have ever experienced at any 4* hotel. Our room was what we had expected from reading the brochure with a lovely sea view. The meals in the hotel were of a very high standard and we experienced no problems with any food which we ate. There is a varied choice for breakfast both hot and cold, including cava and smoked salmon. We only experienced one problem with our room later in our holiday, we spoke to the hotel manager who rectified the problem in minutes. In rectifying the problem he upgraded our room which we certainly did not expect, to add to this cava was then also delivered to our room that evening, only looking for the problem to be resolved I see this as going beyond what was required and certainly looking after your guests. Our room was cleaned every day, towels also being changed every day if required. Towels are also provided daily for your use at the pool and although busy there were always sunbeds available. The entertainment in the evening although limited was good, especially for children. I agree this is an expensive hotel to visit, however, I would say that our room, food, hotel staff are all definitely 4*.
Ant- Hillia! 4 Star Hotel, 3 Star rooms
This hotel makes a good living out of supposedly been a 4 star hotel but the rooms are barely of a 3 star standard. I was in a standard double and the room was dark and dingy at best. The proportions were odd and the first room I stayed in had an ant problem. The staff sorted this out but were fairly un- apologetic and just suggested that I should not leave any food in my room! The ants had been attracted to a complimentary chocolate that had been left by the hotel!!!!! Complex in general expansive and all a bit in-personal. Would not stay there for a holiday.
Fantastic stay!!!!!!!
We have not long returned from our two week stay at this hotel and we cannot see how it has received any bad reviews about it. From the moment we arrived it was excellent. The hotel easily lives up to it's four star rating and we didn't want to come home! We found all the staff very polite and friendly, with each of them happy to tend to any requirements we had. We did ask to change from our first room (not due to any inadeqaucies, but due to vertigo!!!!!!) and there was no problem whatsoever finding another, we were moved with the minimum of fuss or bother and the new room was perfect! Meals were very good too, and once again the staff were superb. Each meal the waiter/waitress was happy to show us which foods were safe for us to eat ( nut allergy). There are developments going on near the hotel, but this is true of the whole of the area, and not once did we find it noisy or think that it spoiled the enjoyment of our stay. The pools are beautiful but i have to agree with some of what has been said before, it was a bit of a pain due to get a sunbed due people reserving them, although we did manage to get a pair of sunbeds on all days but one. The entertainment was pretty good in all, and we did enjoy a few evenings in watching it, but there are some wonderful bars and restaurants off the complex too, especially out towards the bahia del duque. Worth a mention too is the shopping centre just down the road in the middle of the roundabout! It has got some very nice shops there plus a place that sells some really indulgent ice creams and snacks! There are quite a few activities to try in the area too, such as watersports, boat trips and scuba diving, so you'll not get bored in a hurry! All in all it was a fantastic stay and we will definately be returning in the future.
