Stayed here in late Jan 2006. Excellent location at the bottom of the pistes to the main ski area but a trek across town if you want to ski the other side of the valley. Rooms were basic but comfortable. Hotel dining room and lounge area are relaxing and informal. Hotel... more

Excellent location - brilliant staff always very helpful - great food and loads of it - bathrooms tired but perfectly functional. We stayed Feb 2005 and again Feb 06 and staff remembered us. Hotel central and on the nursery slopes. We sat on the terrace with a drink... more

Pity about the Food Hygiene
Nice Hotel with an ideal location for the ski lifts. Rooms are in a reasonable condition and we stayed on the second floor, however, would not like one of the rooms at the lower levels as this is around the area where the ski's and boots are stored, which tends to be damp. Food hygiene in this hotel is a concern and our party ended up with severe food poisoning which is caused by poor food handling hygiene amongst the catering staff. On this basis we would not use Neilson in the future.
Management response from drm290 05 Oct 2006

The Aalborg Hotel can be described, fairly, as a comfortable hotel, however it offers a great piste side location, has something for everyone including it's childrens club, and provides a warm welcome, with infomal service delivered by a friendly and caring team. I note in one review a former customer blames the hotel for food posioning. Suffering from such an illness is not a pleasent experience and naturally people think about the last meal they had and associate this with their symptoms. What some people do not realise is that incubation periods for food posioning can be from 12 to 36 hours in some cases which would include meals taken outside the hotel. The hotel has an excemplary hygiene record and uses preventative systems recognised throughout the hospitality industry to ensure everyones health where food is concerned. The hotel also employs an external food hygiene company that spot audits the hotel on a regular basis. A hotel the size of the Aalborg is a relatively confined area with people eating the same food, prepared by the same set of chefs, so you would expect that the majority of guests would suffer the same symptoms if there was a hygiene problem in the hotel, however the Aalborg Hotel has never suffered from any such problems.

Great if your priorities are food, service and position
Our party stayed at the Neilson-exclusive Aalborg late February 05. The hotel is in a fine position at the bottom of one of the button lifts on the wide nursery slopes and is easy to ski into. The main Jandri lift and ski school are a just-comfortable 5 minute flat walk along the nursery slopes. The bar/lounge and dining room are nicely furnished and comfortable. Food was pretty good and plentiful although they do charge extra for afternoon tea which just seems mean. The basement holds the ski/boot room which is basically just lockers and a gloomy area for boot changing. No boot warmers. Also in the basement are the basic price bedrooms (without balconies), the rooms you can see below the terrace in the brochure photo. Room 508 is directly beneath the children's room and can be noisy. Our major gripe was the standard of the bedrooms which resemble hostel accommodation. They are reasonable in size but the tatty furnishings, cracked and plaster-peeling walls and chipboard shelving spoil the whole hotel. The bathroom was fine with a bath and shower over, though the separate loo is frighteningly claustrophobic - if you're over 5'10" your knees will touch the door! The balconied rooms didn't seem any better, maybe a little lighter with their patio doors. Extremely quiet at night. The saving grace of this hotel is the staff. All Brits, the majority were fabulous in their manner and quality of service. When we needed medical help they were first class. Our party used the creche and were happy with its service, although the children's room was small and could do with a makeover. In summary, I would recommend the Aalborg for position, a quiet night's sleep, its food and most of all, the service. It just lets itself down with the quality of the bedrooms.
