Lucerne Hotel

Just returned from New York, staying at the Lucerne, West 79th between Amsterdam & Broadway - great position, well appointed with good facilities. Customer service mediocre, but would recommend the hotel highly.

True, the location is wonderful. Nothing beats the upper west side for a multitude of restaurants, charming tree lined streets a short walk away from museums and subways, lots of New York locals and young families. The exterior of the hotel is remarkable. But my room was a little disappointing. After reading all of the other reviews on this site I guess I was expecting more for $180. It was small, somewhat dated and could have used some new carpeting and bed spread. And the double beds were indeed doubles, not queens. The shower, however... more

The Lucern was a nice hotel. Furnishings were average, and not elegant. However I agree with the other reviews-the staff was always helpful, friendly and willing to advise. The rooms were clean and the location of the hotel can't be beat. Two blocks to the Natural History Museum, 10 minute walk to Metropolitan Museum of Art, short walks to 2 subway lines. I'd definitely go here again.

Wow what a great hotel! Stayed at the Lucerne from 7/20-7/24. Hotel is in great shape! The only thing better than the hotel are the employees, very helpful and polite. Subway is only a block away, you can be in Times Square, Chinatown, or lower Manhattan within minutes for only $2/per person. Or if you prefer a cab, there always seemed to be one waiting at the front door, cab ride into Times Square is typically $8. Plenty of restaurants/diners and bagel stores within a block of the hotel to get you going in the morning. Great... more

Spent 3 nights at the Lucerne. Was teriffic. Great location, near Lincoln Center, Central Park, museums, subway. Was the quietest Manhattan hotel I have every stayed in. Staff was very courteous, friendly, helpful. Teriffic ice cream shop across the street as well as breakfast & lunch store, Columbus Bakery, 4 blocks away. Had exceptionally good meals at Oeust on 84th & Amsterdam & Saigon Cafe on 90th & Amsterdam. Enjoyed complimentary NY Times daily. Will definitely return for next trip to NY.

The first time I stayed in the Lucerne was September 2000 when I was on my first ever trip alone (without my parents or school friends), and my first time in New York City. When I finally arrived at the hotel, after the airline transfered my luggage from the airport and forgot me, I was very pleased with my choice. I stayed here last night with my 2 children ages 6 and 8. We got there a couple hours earlier than their check in time. I wasn't expecting to be able to check in, just to store my overnight bag. The man in registration said that if I didn't mind waiting about 15 minutes that there would be a nice room available. We only waited about 10 minutes and was told that we were upgraded to a suite. Started our two week holiday to the USA in New York. Stayed at The Lucerne on the strength of recommendations on this site. Not at all disappointed. We had a King room situated at the back of the Hotel. No view, other than of a bird's nest, but it was very quiet. Let's face it you don't visit New York to stay in the Hotel room!! The room was very comfortable and very well equipped. Stayed at the Lucerne for two weeks in June 04. Very good hotel in an beautiful area of New York. Clean, comfortable and excellent service. The Nice Matin adjacent is an outstanding place for dinner. Only a couple of blocks from Central Park and a $5 cab ride to the Theater District. Great boutique, drugstore, grocery store, and discount (Filene's Basement), laundry and liqour stores within 3 blocks. The suites are a good value for the price.

This is an updated hotel with nicely decorated rooms. Our room was spacious and well lit with a nice size bathroom. The room was advertised as having two "double beds". Double beds at the Lucerne are all queensize. The upper west side neighborhood is filled with restaurants and shops. Filene's Bargain Basement is close by. The staff is very helpful. Really enjoyed our stay and would definitely go back again.
