What a bargain!
from A TripAdvisor Member
The Hotel Vis is not the most luxurious hotel I've ever stayed at, by far; nevertheless, we got just what we paid for. Professional service, good breakfasts indeed, and a beautiful view of the beach and ocean. We originally booked reservations at the Villa Rasica up the street but were so horrified at that hotel, we never unpacked. We just decided to find another hotel in the area willing to take us. We spent an extra $100 per night (we were only staying two nights anyway) but really managed quite an upgrade. What struck me was how clean the hotel was, and how the staff were happy to speak english to me, the ugly American! If you're looking for luxury, or walking distance to the old city of Dubrovnik, don't bother with this hotel. But, if you're willing to take the bus to the city, and you don't need the most fancy room, the Hotel Vis will suit you :)

we stayed at hotel vis for 5 nights, it is very dated and in need of refurbishment! the room was clean but smelly. the location on the beach is the best thing going for the hotel and I would definately recommend a sea view room. The breakfast was poor. One day it rained all day and we couldn't even get lunch at the hotel as they shut everything. Overall it was ok, it was the only place we could find but the beach is lovely.
Hotel Vis
from FLO077
During a recent Trip to Crotia we stayed in Hotel Vis. The rooms were very basis as was the decor in the rest of the hotel. However the views out of the hotel were amazing so if you want a really nice hotel don't stay here but if you just want a base where you are straight onto the beach and have great views from you're room then this is a good location for you. The area of Lapad is very quiet and would be most suited to older holiday makers even for families there wasn't much you could amuse the children with. Overall though for the money you pay for Hotel Vis you could find better for sure. Happy holidays!
Very Solid, would go back

This is a very decent hotel in a good location. We had a nice view of Lapad Bay. The food was good. The bus stop was right outside the hotel, which made it very convenient to get to Old Town. You can also buy bus tickets in the hotel lobby which makes things even easier. There are lots of steps to climb here and no elevator, so if you can't handle stairs, this could be a problem. Otherwise, it is a fine hotel for the price.
a very average hotel but clean
from boribs
we stayed with my wife for two weeks in august 2006 at the hotel VIS and we find this hotel very clean , the room was quite nice and spacious and the staff quiet helpful (exept the reception staff wish are useless ) We payed a little extra for sea view and it worth it . You don't want to know what's on the other side of the hotel so if you go there , pay a little extra for a sea view . The beach outside is not a sand beach but it's nice but very crowed with people in august . Next to the hotel there's a bus stop wich take you to dubrovnick olt town.the food wich mean for us breakfast and dinner was ok most of the time but not very existing . One of the thing i didn't like if the number of people who eat like pigs with enormous portion of food . they actually empty the buffet and eat like they're never eating before . You pay for what you get , don't expect to have a 5 stars for a price of 3 stars . Expect a nice 3 stars hotel with average food and average staff service . by the way , It's full of italians during august and other natinalities so If you looking for a quiet holiday , don't go there in august , my advice . For conclusion : Hotel vis is value for money depending how much is your trip .(paid 550 € /week including flights , transfert , room sea view , breafast +dinner per personn) I would recommend this hotel if you are on a budget but if not , i would recommend hotel uvula , 4 stars wich looks very nice and much better or the 5 stars down the road : hotel spendid .Enjoy your stay ......
very good holiday

We stayed at the Vis in May 2006, the hotel was good , the staff very friendly and helpful, the rooms ( & cleaning staff) very good for a 3 star hotel.the dining room was a' sit in the same place for the whole of your stay' but the food was ok if a bit unexciting. plenty of it and plenty of selection. I personally didnt think you should have to pay for your sunbeds, but didnt use them anyway as we are not beach people. very good local bus service, many places to see, especially Dubrovnik only 10 minutes on the bus. get your tickets from the hotel as no change given on bus, dont queue just push as do the locals. lovely walk right around to Gruz harbour, 10 minutes across the roads or 2 hours right round the headland for beautiful walk and photos.Took a boat trip to Lokrum island well worth the small price , no charge to get on island, plenty of snacks available in the restaurant there,.I would go back to Dubrovnik but might be too hot in july /August. the beach is only pebbles but the water is very clean. all in all a very enjoyable holiday.
Hotel Vis, a homely but satisfactory hotel
from Alsacienne
I stayed here between 29 April-6 May. The hotel was spotlessly clean at all times and our room was comfortable, clean and quiet. Permanent hot water on tap and a bath worthy of the name. This is not a resort hotel, but somewhere good for using as a base to visit Dubrovnik and to take excursions further afield such as Mostar and Montenegro (both recommended!). The reception staff are very friendly - you may be a PAYING guest, but a smile always works wonders. You could change money here at an honest rate, buy tickets for the local bus (stops outside) and use a safe deposit box for free. There was a small paperback library for those who needed to borrow something to read - nice touch. The weakest point has to be the evening meal - the dining room is allocated seating and rather cramped buffet counters. That said, the meals were always edible (and it was cold and wet during our stay so we often started with soup!), and there were always a selection of fresh salad ingredients and fresh fruit so it was healthy. A British tour group wanted butter with their bread, and the Chef immediately got them as much as they wanted without a murmur. The waiters in the bar were helpful, friendly and efficient and the prices were by no means exaggerated. The Vis is part of the Maestrali hotels group, and you can use the facilities of the other two adjacent hotels - the Uvula and the Adriatica - without charge (including an indoor fitness and pampering centre). Of course it's far to easy to criticise than to look for positive points. The Hotel Vis may have an older clientele than many DIY travellers, but this is a former 'State' hotel (as are others in the Babin Kuk and Lapad peninsula regions) that is positively trying to provide a clean and quiet place for visitors to sleep and refresh themselves - it is not, and does not pretend to be a 'resort' hotel. It has no facilities for children and therefore parents with youngsters will naturally be disappointed, but they are not the target market for this type of accommodation. Incidentally, if you are going on an early-start excursion, the hotel breakfast is available for when you need it, and for our pickup at 4.15 am, they provided an excellent cold breakfast with hot tea and coffee from 3.30 am. Can't say fairer than that.
Average Hotel, Bad Staff
from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed here with a friend for 5 nights and the hotel room was pretty standard and in a good location. However the quality of service provided by the staff (apart from House-Keeping) was very bad. The reception and resturant staff here were either incompetent or donot seem to have the friendly and helpful attitude required in the hospitality industry. I will not recommend staying here.
Suggest you avoid

We stayed here for 5 days after doing quite some investigation and not finding anything that really jumped out at us. We read the previous posting and selected this hotel based on the posting. All that was said was correct however it really was what wasn’t said that is the key. As the previous post said, hotels in this area are not cheap so this was a good price but in comparison to other 3 star hotels I have stayed in for the same price it fell very short. This hotel is a very average 3 star hotel with no additional trimmings and to suggest that they are going to apply for a 4 star rating is laughable. The room was stock standard with a TV (standard), phone (standard) and bathroom (standard) which was cleaned daily (standard). The staff were charmless. The staff in the restaurant made you feel like you were keeping them from going home, the staff on the desk did their job but with no smiles and nothing extra. We asked that the receptionist phone our tour operator who was late picking us up and they would not do it. Even asking to purchase bus tickets seemed like we were asking them to fly to the moon. It is a popular hotel with package tours and there were quite a few through when we were there. They were very loud in the hall way and you could hear every word from within your room. The food is not good, breakfast is very average and we had dinner there one night but it was the worst dinner we had in Dubrovnik. Make the effort and go into the old town for fresh seafood that is cheaper than the meals here. The location was very good, walking distance to the harbour and a direct bus trip to the old town of Dubrovnik. If I go back to Dubrovnik I would increase my budget and stay at a four or five star hotel in the area.
Hotel Vis: my good choice!
from Smiley1974
I will repeat something that I have said many times before talking about different hotels: you see one you've seen them all...But, there is always something that separates one hotel from another and drives it up or down the quality scale. While I was trying to find best place to stay in Dubrovnik I have tried to collect as much as information's as possible – by contacting agencies, friends and even Multiply network. I have also searched Internet for more information's and valuable independent reviews. Finding information's was not always that easy (e.g. agencies would try to sell something anyway possible and would tell you "fairytales" about places to stay at desired location). Here is my review of the place I have chosen at the end (even though you are never certain about quality of your choice before you see it): Location: Hotel Vis is located at Lapad area, which is some 4 km away from Old Town of Dubrovnik (definitely must see at this city!). There is a bus stop very near hotel so you would not have problem to go there in case you don't want to take a walk or use your car (nothing much to see from point A to point B so jumping inside local bus is not bad idea). You can always buy bus tickets at reception desk, which is very convenient, but even if you buy ticket inside bus you would not pay much more. Hotel (general): Hotel Vis itself is decent hotel (I've seen some other places at Adriatic sea crying for investments). It is rather well decorated and spacious (read my introduction again!). It is awarded with three stars but I have heard they would like to apply for additional one very soon (just a gossip coming outside hotel). Rooms: Rooms are well furnished with enough space available (you are not going to spend much time there anyway – you will spend your time at the beach or exploring Dubrovnik). They are equipped with TV set and telephone (AC is an option). Bathroom is equipped with usual things and well maintained. Rooms are daily cleaned. My room had a sea view which added some flavor to staying there. Lapad bay view is very nice and you should definitely think about these rooms in case you decide to stay at hotel Vis. Balcony was also spacious enough and could offer nice moments of relaxation with nice view in front. Beach: Hotel beach is covered with large pebbles and is only some 10m away from the hotel. It is large enough, but I have to emphasize that we have stayed there out of high season so I cannot tell you more about how crowded it is. Food: We have stayed at the hotel on HB basis, which means we had breakfast and dinner available (we have eaten our lunches at city center, but you have to read about that at my Dubrovnik journal). It was served on buffet basis. Food was colorful and various. Meals I have chosen were tasty enough and could keep me away from additional meals outside hotel (there are some places abroad where you start your immediate search for fast food restaurants as a salvation). Entertainment: I have stayed at Hotel Vis outside high season so there was no big entertainment available. That was something to look for outside hotel. I cannot tell you more about quality of entertainment during high season. There are many boat excursions available every day (details available at the reception desk or at people selling tickets outside hotel (at the beach). Service: Quality of service provided by hotel stuff was very good! They were very friendly and met all our requirements. Actually, we didn't make many requirements but we had some questions to ask and got our immediate answers. Price: Now, the most important thing: the price! Hotels in Dubrovnik are rather expensive that is for certain. I think that Hotel Vis was really good (if not the best) choice amongst hotels of same category. Availability checks and reservations are highly recommended! Conclusion: I would definitely go back to Dubrovnik and I would also definitely stay at Hotel Vis again! (Maybe a visit during high season would make me say something else?)

Hotel Vis is a lovely place to be, my partner, myself and our 5 year old daughter went last summer. Vis is not a modern hotel but the facilities are very clean and the staff are very welcoming, especially to our daughter. The hotel has no specific facilities for kids which... more
