Dubrovnik Palace Hotel Reviews
" Good location with great sea views... "
Submitted By: Mr P Webster
Good location with great sea views from rooms. Lovely clean hotel with friendly staff.
Only downside to hotel was the sterile 'Sunset Lounge Bar' which had poor service and expensive drinks, a shame as the views at sunset are stunning from here.
Regular bus service to Dubrovnik old town. Recommend getting boat to Lokrum Island for the day to escape the crowds.
Cost of eating out similar to UK. Recommend lovely family run restaurant in Lapad called Konobo 'Atlantic' on Kardinala Stepinca with Italian/Croatian food - wonderful homemade pasta, fresh fish, homemade cakes (try the Carouba Cake or courgette flower fritters!).
Overall great holiday.

" I stayed here from 17 to 27 May 2007... "

I stayed here from 17 to 27 May 2007 with my partner and his parents and we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday.
The staff were polite and courteous, food was lovely (especially the breakfast), and facilities were excellent.
Views from the hotel rooms and restaurant were stunning, I don't think there is anywhere better located.
Buses run from right outside the hotel on a regular basis to Dubrovnik Old City (only a short ride) and cost 10 kunas or 8 kunas if you buy from hotel reception.
We would highly recommend this hotel!

" We arrived at the Dubrovnik Palace... "
Submitted By: Mrs P Close
We arrived at the Dubrovnik Palace Hotel to find the reception staff very helpful, booking us in swiftly and arranging to have our bags taken to our room.
The reception area continued into the Sunset lounge where the big sprawling windows looked out to magnificent views.
Our room was very clean and the bathroom was stocked with free Gharani Strok products being replenished as we used them. Our room was cleaned daily and sheets and towels changed daily.
We couldn't hear other residents from our room, they were very private. The room was everything it said in the brochure.
The breakfast buffet was everything you can ever imagine wanting from fresh fruit to English breakfast and a chef making fresh omelettes, or eggs anyway you liked them, and I believe I managed to try most of everything in the week we were visiting.
We ate in the hotel's restaurant overlooking the Adriatic where the food was excellent but also tried restaurants down by the beach, there are a few to chose from.
Our first night we went to one and ate outside then the heavens turned and what a display of thunder and lightning! It was a good show, which finished as quickly as it started, luckily we was under a canopy so stayed dry through it all.
The rest of the week we had warm weather with no storms.
The festival was on in Dubrovnik old town and its first night finished with a display of fireworks over the water.
We had declined to go on the boat trip from the Thomson operator (who by the way was the most helpful tour operator I have known) and realise this would have been the best way to see the fireworks over the water.
All in all it is the first holiday where I didn't want to leave; I enjoyed the magnificent hotel with its lifts (I never quite knew which door to go out of) with its piped music to the relaxed atmosphere and friendly people of Croatia.

" I could not agree with Ms. Tubb's... "

I could not agree with Ms. Tubb's review more. My husband and I recently spent 5 nights at the Dubrovnik Palace. I have to say that I found the Palace to be undeserving of its 5 -star rating.
I was anticipating true 5 star Adriatic luxury, similar lets say to the Hotel Excelsior on the Lido in Venice....plush rooms, excellent service, a bathroom from heaven. Instead, the rooms were rather cheaply furnished and outfitted. The sheets were high thread count, but the comforter was twin size thrown on a king (I had to call to get a feather pillow); the bathroom was as Ms. Tubb explained, very poorly designed and with very poor quality uncomfortable tiles; and the hotel staff were less than accommodating.
Based on the rooms this hotel really would be a 3 to 4 star hotel, really nothing nicer that your typical American Holiday Inn for comparison.
The hotel's facilities and common areas; however, were 5 star. Gorgeous pool and beach area. However, who goes to Dubrovnik to spend all day at the pool anyway?
My advice is that if you are going to Dubrovnik, stay at the Hilton Imperial instead. It does not have an outdoor pool beach, etc., but a beach day is not hard to do in Dubrovnik as beaches abound on the mainland and at nearby Islands.
Plus, the Hilton is a bit less expensive. The Palace definitely isn't worth the price tag. Also, don't visit in July or August as it is much too crowded and HOT at that time of year.

" Flew with Thomsonfly- seats very... "
Submitted By: Mrs R Tubb
Flew with Thomsonfly- seats very cramped-husbands knees touching seat in front- no elbow room- meal disgusting. No free soft drinks. No decaffeinated coffee.
Good points hotel:-
All rooms overlook bay and not overlooked by anyone.
Excellent indoor pool and spa area, good gym overlooking sea.
Reception staff always helpful, and had an information desk that booked excursions.
Good peaceful location away from traffic, crowds.
Bad points hotel:-
Bathroom shower located in middle of bath and shower screen ends half way along bath, so have to direct the shower head along the wall towards the plug hole which means that not all of your body gets showered at the same time- very awkward and badly planned when re-furbished.
Poor standard of cleaning, especially the bathroom floor and carpeting. Curtains did not keep out the light as they had hooks missing and not wide enough. Nets needed cleaning.
One large restaurant- white walls- lots of lights- feels like a canteen. Always busy- unable to relax.
Also the bar was an extension of the reception area so not relaxing, large and open- no intimacy. Think they were in the process of opening a small cigar/wine bar which is ok if you smoke!!!
Breakfast was great with all the choices of hot/cold/pastries etc, but evening buffet was boring, bland, basic choices of food, same choices of cold salad every night. Mainly tinned carrots, overcooked vegetables consisting only of spinach, cabbage, potatoes. Not very appetising. Felt sorry for the vegetarians. Decided to go out for our evening meals after 3 evenings of low quality food.
Recommend the small terraced restaurant overlooking the bay on the 1st floor as has a good menu for lunch, sandwiches, steak, chicken, pizza can be shared as huge.
They have a Mexican themed evening on wed, so you would have thought that there would be tequila, Mexican music, dancing- no such luck- the musicians played something like funeral music all night, only half full, and people ate and went as no atmosphere and getting bitten by mosquitoes. Menu was overpriced. Very disappointing, so did not bother with the Friday Croatian themed evening.
There was an al a carte restaurant accessed by walking the length of the main restaurant , but it had a Chinese theme all week. The chef had obviously never eaten Chinese food before as the meal was definitely not authentic. The spring rolls were 6 inches long and 1 inch diameter, made from ordinary short pastry -too heavy and difficult to digest as they gave me 2, with minced meat inside served on some salad. The main course was supposed to be duck in Sichuan sauce , but was more like chewy pieces of steak. Price was £30 each with a bottle of wine.
The wines in the restaurant were min £13 per bottle, and we innocently agreed to let the wine waiter recommend a bottle of their local wine on our 1st night, and discovered at the end of the meal, because she didn’t tell us the price or show us the wine list, that we were charged £30. Same bottle found in local supermarket for £8.
The hotel nightclub started too late at 11.00pm with live jazz music as the majority of guests were ready for bed by that time.
Beware the mosquitoes after 5pm, make sure you keep your balcony door shut, and put some spray on before venturing outside.
Keep all your receipts when putting drinks on your room no, as guests do have a habit of putting down the wrong room number, i.e. yours.
Overall the hotel was good, and we enjoyed our stay, but it was not in our opinion a 5*- more a 4. It was supposed to be the best hotel in Dubrovnik.
Places to eat:-
We mainly chose to eat out in the Old Town by the harbour. Good choice of menu, reasonably priced, good service, live music after 7.00pm.
There are a few cafes restaurants 10 mins walk from the hotel, down the hill leading to lovely walk past the restaurants and hotel around the small beach and peninsular.
Trips:-
Highly recommend the jeep safari- but do not get conned into driving as it is an all day event and at 3pm you get a wonderful home-cooked meal in a 350 yr old farmhouse with home -made wines so the drivers are unable to relax and enjoy themselves as they have another 2 hour drive back to the base. Although there are various stops and a break to go for a swim in a secluded bay, you are on the road for approx 6-7 hours, and some of the off road driving is hard work. So always say no to driving, as they are trying to cut down on the number of vehicles and guides. Also the seating is for 4 people, but they cram another 2 into the back seat which is hard, has little leg room or anywhere to hold onto, so refuse to sit in the back and request a comfortable seat even if it means them having to supply another jeep and driver.
The day drip to Montenegro was wonderful, lots of stops and three towns. Sit on the right hand side of the coach to get the best views. Need the sunshine to get the best from this trip.
Ensure that you get a large boat to do the 3 island tour as there were some small boats which looked a bit cramped. Usually get grilled fish, salad, wine, soft drinks included.
The hydrofoil to Mljet was good and worth a visit.
Avoid the Old Town in Dubrovnik on Friday & Saturday as can have 4 cruise ships arrive with hoards of tourists, who are guided around in large groups taking up most of the space.
Escape on the 10 min ferry to Lokrum and stroll around the islands wooded walks. Has a restaurant and cafe.
Did not find very much to buy in the way of souvenirs, seemed to cater for the cruise ships with tacky junk and mainly hand embroidered table cloths. Not many shops even outside the old town- one department store and a few odd shops. There was only shop I would recommend that was a hand-made leather shop on one of the main shopping streets off the central street.
The bus stop for no 4, is outside the hotel and takes 15-20 mins to the Old Town for 80p. Buy tickets in advance at the hotel reception to be punched when entering bus in front of the driver. OK going as you are the 1st pick-up, but coming back is always busy and people pushing each other to get on the bus in the heat. So when we were hot and tired it was worth the £7 to get a taxi a few feet away from the bus stop at Pile Gate.
As we were lucky with the weather we really enjoyed our stay in Dubrovnik, but understand that they have had the worst summer for decades this year and upset a lot of visitors and locals with the amount of rainfall.
The wall takes 2 hours and is not as flat as it looks, there are loads of steep steps to go up and down all the way around. Recommend you each pay the 30 kunar (£3) to have your own hand held talking guide, saw some people having one between them and it did not work out. Wear sensible shoes, saw women in heels, flip flops, also not suitable for pushchairs/buggies, although there were a couple who were determined to carry child and pushchair around the narrow walkways and steep steps- they were exhausted. Go early morning to beat the crowds- opens at 8.00am
This is not the place to go if you want a beach holiday as most of the swimming is off the rocks, and only found small pebbly beaches. lots of sore feet ouch.

A recently refurbished hotel which is now holding a five star rating.
Food super and rooms more than adequate.
The view is unbelievable and changes with the time of day and with the fluctuations in the weather.
Staff always there to help and are very friendly.
Hotel is unique, being built on the side of a cliff !!
Reception , accessible from the upper road, is on floor nine and the swimming pool and cafe are on floor one.
To confuse, the dining room is on floor seven !!
Excellent keep fit facilities (on the TENTH floor) and regular buses into Dubrovnik.
Most impressed

However, the hotel's environment lacked excitment in certain areas. Staff didn't show much intrest in us staying there and we never really gained that personal bond that you can get at other hotels.
If you want a super modern stay, perfect weather, and a hotel perfectly located then this is the stay for you.
