" Cavtat is lovely. Small resort with... "

Cavtat is lovely. Small resort with varied restaurants and a fab harbour where cruisers and yachts call in regularly (not the ocean going sizes).
Dubrovnik is not too far away. Public transport is available but a car is essential to get off the beaten track.
The hotel is a massive, concrete barnacle of a place but thankfully hidden nicely into the hillside and softened by trees. The reception decor is very 60's, a mixture of hard surfaces and lime green/black sofas.
Definitely ask for a sea view. I would not have wanted a room at the back as the hotel is surrounded by thick pine trees hence little/no sun.
Our room was on the 7th floor at the furthest point from the pool area. The room was a good size but the air-conditioning was ineffective.
The head end of the bed wall was warm to touch, due to the glare of the sun on the external wall which may give an indication of how warm the room got. The bathroom was small and there was no shower screen so the marble floor got soaked no matter how careful we were.
We reported both these points to the hotel staff to no avail. The curtains were unlined so we always woke early. However, the balcony was nice with a view to the open sea. Overall the room, though adequate, seemed tatty.
We had plenty of exercise though making our way to either the pool (we gave up after the first day as it was too small for the volume of people) or 'beach' (man made and not serving the hotel only).
This is not a hotel for unfit/infirm. The daily request to have to queue and log our room to obtain and return the towels was irritating and to ask also for an extra towel was met with distain.
The restaurant had a mixture of table sizes and the policy (in our case and seemed for most) was to share a table (for 4 for us) with another couple for breakfast and evening meals. Thankfully we got on well.
In their case, they had no complaints about their room at all and it became evident throughout our stay that the hotel was modernising rooms in stages.
The food was buffet style and adequate. Plenty of choice. There was a weekly localised event on the beachside which had to be paid for in cash (bit on the side for the staff??).
Staff were friendly and we would visit Cavtat again but not this hotel. Even when fully modernised, it is simply too large (for us anyhow). Or if you like a large hotel, choose your room wisely.
Croatia also has a lot to offer with a rich history and is well worth a visit.
Definitely do take the chance of the day trip to Montenegro and DO take your passport, they really don't let you through if you don't have it - 2 people were left at the border from our coach!

" My wife and I have visited Cavtat... "

My wife and I have visited Cavtat many times, (we go nowhere else) and have stayed in The Croatia Hotel on many holidays, before and after their recent troubles, we have always been met with absolute professionalism and courtesy by the staff (they are unequalled anywhere). The Hotel boasts almost any activity you can think of. The Restaurants of which their are 4 (excluding the beach restaurant) serve excellent food, the fish we recommend. The cleanliness of the hotel cannot be beaten. (I dropped my napkin at breakfast one day, picked it up, it was taken from me immediately and a fresh one offered using tongs.) I must not say too much or we will not get a room next time. simply No drunks. No rowdism, No crime, Absolute safety wherever you go at any time of day or night.
Many thanks for the opportunity to speak me piece.

Bed and breakfast was much better and it enabled us to try some of the great restaurants in the town. The hotel is great and I do recommend the spa - great massages.
The only downside is the number of steps up to the hotel from the town but they do help work off any holiday pounds you may have gained!!
The local restaurants offered lovely food, well priced and overlooking the harbour. It is easy to travel around the town, we got a local guide book from reception which gives all the bus routes and easily caught these from the centre of Cavtat.
You can also travel around by boat with regular trips to Dubrovnik but it is a little more expensive although quicker than the bus. We will definitely be returning to Cavtat, it offers beautiful surroundings, friendly people, fab food, and lots of activities - highly recommended.
