My family travels about twice a year usually to an all-inclusive resort. This by far was not my favorite. The beach was beautiful, and the rooms were very clean. Customer service was lacking; although some staff members were very friendly and accommodating. Many staff... more

It was paradise - could not fault the hotel at all. The staff could not be more helpful and so friendly. I was taken there by my sister and husband as a present for my retirement and what a wonderful present. My niece of 7 also came and she was not bored and there was... more

I have visited the Riu Tropical Bay twice with my family, and I am currently planning our third trip, which will tell you all you need to know. The food was great given the amount of people that are catered for on a daily basis-I'm a bit of a food snob, so if I'm happy... more

When my husband booked this holiday for our family, I too was worried about previous bad press in Jamaica, but I have to say that I was proved very wrong! What a beautiful hotel with the most lovely, helpful staff. The beach also lived up to expectations of what you... more

The hotel itself was really nice and clean. However, the food was really off putting. They didn't seem to have much of a range of English food and food that they did make, wasn't very nice at all. The swimming pool also made me and another one of my party quite ill. The... more

I have to say that the Tropical Bay is one of the best hotels that I have been to, when ever we go to the Caribbean/Mexico we always stay with the Riu group as they seem to offer best value for money I know that is not always important but it helps. When I thought of... more

Excellent
My first impression of the resort was excellent...and I still had that impression when I left. The beach and the facilities were amazing, as well as the staff. My main purpose for the holiday was to attend a wedding on the beach, which was outstanding! All-in-all, the place was great and I wasn't ready to leave.
Beautiful hotel and great food
This place is very nice. I liked it a lot the beach was awesome. I do think they had a great variety in the meals. I loved their mac and cheese. While we were there they has so much seafood. Large shrimp and fish. You have to try their fancy restaurant the food is delicious. The jerk chicken was the best we tasted in Jamaica, but you have to get it at the grill. Even the hot dogs were good. We did not see all the shows, but the one with the guys singing was good. We felt they caterer to our need and we were a group of 9. If you can't make it to dinner on time they will accomodate you at the next sitting else you can have pizza, which was quite good. Try the reggae pizza. If you are there consider taking the river tubing excursion it is very nice and we got our own driver "noon" he was very nice.
Not a 5 Star
Just came back from RIU 12/10/02. Could not believe the 5 star rating. Very poor service, had a lot of problems getting our bar restocked. Shower was broke. The beds were terrible. The view was the only thing worth going for. The food was OK. No lobster, no shrimp. Just American food with a few fish items. I was expecting more. The beach was great and sailing was fun. We could not do any motorized sports because their boat was broke. I would suggest that you spend your hard earned money somewhener else.
Time of our lives!
My best friend and I visited the RIU the first week of December, 2002. I cannot tell you how pleased I was with this resort! The staff was very friendly (especially bar tenders Clarence and Marcia and Entertainment staff Sylvester and Elvis). I never wanted to leave.... The food was good with a new selection at the buffet all the time. We had duck, shrimp, calamari, jamaica night. The a-la-carte restaurant was delicious. My only disapointment was the lunch buffet was kind of the same everyday. The beach was beautiful and though the pool doesn't look huge, it was never over crowded. I would recommend this to anyone planning on going south!
Not a 5 star hotel
November 2002 Riu Topical Bay is not a five star like they claim to be. We went there for a Thanksgiving week with 5 other families – 21 people all together. The biggest problem I found they were very inconsistent in food and service quality. Over the week I was ready to give them between 2 ½ to 4 ½ stars, in the end I would say it somewhere in 3 ½ to 4 star range. CHECK IN The ride from Montego bay was very long over 2 hours but that was mainly because of traffic. Check in was quick. They Gave us some welcome drinks and sent us to our hotel room. The only issue they didn’t bring our bag for another half an hour. ROOMS The room was clean and pretty good. The beds were 2 full beds pushed together. A latch on the door was broken and didn’t get fixed until a few days later. Shower also broke in the middle of our stay but it was fixed immediately. Room cleaning was good except for some reason our towels weren’t changed for two days in the middle of the week. I ended up going to a maid and asking for it. I suggest getting a room on the middle floor. I’ve seen roaches on the first floor and it could be a little hot on the top floor. ENTERTAINMENT The entertainment was OK 2 may be 3 days out of 7. Other days it was disappointing to put it mildly. Shows start 9:30 – 10:00 and there is basically nothing to do between 5:30 and 9:30 other then dinner. BEACH/POOL The beach and sand were excellent. We did have some “rough sea” and therefore a lot of seaweed also my wife and a few of our friend were bitten by Jelly Fish but that’s beyond anyone’s control. Pool is very nice but side jets in the Jacuzzi do not work. FOOD At the main restaurant the food was very good some days and average or below other days. Service was spotty, sometimes good some times not. We went to sir Antony’s once. The main course very good but the soup and desert were terrible. Pizza is decent but nothing spectacular. The chicken and sausage stand at the is great. Overall we had a good relaxing time as I mentioned the inconsistency kills the whole impression. If you want a relaxing vacation and you are not very picky Riu fits the bill but if you are looking for a 5 star place go elsewhere.
Trip from Hell!!
What can say?? Dream vacation turned to Vacation from Hell!! We landed in Jamaica on the 16th of September and were ambushed by rude persons who took possession of our luggage without asking for permission and then had the gull to say our Canadian dollar was not good enough for them! So much for the tip this guy received. The resort itself is beautiful, the beach...breathtaking white sand and aqua water...until the 18th. Then Huricane Isidore hit and we had the pleasure of being hosted by 7 days of rains. Tours were cancelled and rescheduled without being advised by the tour guide. Wonderful. What did we do the majority of the time? We spent it either at the bar (so much drinks you can drink) without any entertainment, without any activities organized to compensate for the rain. The rest of the was spend in our room watching TV and a run at the beach when the rain stopped which was not often. We went shopping at the gift shop and spend our hard earned money there with the staff bagging our purchases without so much of a thank you. Again, wonderful! I have never been so disappointed in people as I was at the Riu Tropical Bay Resort. The staff was very rude and ignorant. If they would have been more pleasant and welcoming the trip would have been worth it even with the rain but so much for that! After speaking to other tourists on our trip and then to relatives, who we found out went there in July, we saw that we were not the only ones walking away disgusted with the staff and service. I definitely would not recommend this resort to anyone, even my worst ennemy. $5,000 down the drain.
First trip to Jamaica
We just got back from RIU Tropical Bay and it was the best vacation we ever had. My wife’s entire family went and we all felt the same way. Everyone (9 of us) found something to do and at little or no extra cost. My wife was on the beach all day, her sister and husband did the tours, the kids, (3 girls, ages 16-27) and I snorkeled, sailed and swam and grandma and grandpa sat by the pool. My mother-in-law is in a wheelchair and had no problems what so ever. The staff were great, the food excellent, and service was friendly and timely. O' sure things there are not perfect but the problems are so small that they are easily over looked as not important. I highly recommend the resort and we looking forward to going back.
The best place on earth
This by far the best vacation I have ever taken. If I win the lottery I would buy this place and live there forever. It was not just a beautiful beach and room but the people that work there are by far the friendlest I ever expierenced on vacation. book now and when you get there have Delta (the bar shift supervisor)make you a rum cream pina colada and let all your worries go away.
RIU Tropical-Just OK
At first look RIU tropical is a very nice place, very well laid out, very well kept. The facilities were good, the service was just ok. Food could be better. It took the front desk 4 hours to get a message to our room. The food was mediocre, the entertainment was poor. During our stay (thurs thru sunday) the entertainment was scheduled on thursday and sunday. Nothing on friday or saturday night except a 1/2 hour Play. The Beach party and bonfire was scheduled for sunday night. We were woke by the maids before 10:am on our last day, wanting to know when we would be checking out. The shower was broken and no washcloths were supplied in the rooms. On Saturday, we came in to get ready for Dinner, only to find no towels in our room. After 2 calls to the front desk and 1/2 hour later, we finally received towels. If you are going here expecting to hear Reggae music, this isn't the place. Plan on visiting the Jungle or other venues. The bars have strange hours, and all seem to roll up about midnite. The disco is only open til 2:00 am. All in all, yes it was an OK experience for a first time in Jamaica, would I return to this facility again? probably not. Michael and Sharon Laymance Dallas, NC
Riu, is a five star
We spent our honeymoon (1 week) at the Riu tropical and really loved it. Upon arrival at the hotel our check in was really fast and they upgraded us to a oceanfront room for our honeymoon upgrade (sure beat the fruit basket we were supposed to receive). The resort is not too large, the foilage and landscaping is beautiful. The beach was great, one of the best on this strip of hotels. There were plenty of loungers all day, there was an abundance of towels and the sun was constantly shining(surprising since we were there during hurricane season). The rooms were very clean, there were no cockroaches or any other type of bugs, nor was there any power outages while we were there. The air conditioning worked really well in our room, we had to turn it down frequently. The food was good, I loved the jerk chicken at the beach. The lunch and dinner buffets were really good. They have theme nights twice a week, I think Thursday and Saturday's. They had an Asian night and a Jamaican night during our stay. We took one tour from the resort and that was the Rhodes Island tour with Wild Thing which included a boat ride, snorkeling, horseback riding by the ocean and a barbeque and all the Red Stripe and Rum punch you could drink. It was worth the money, the snorkeling there was amazing and the crew on the Wild Thing were so friendly and fun. The shows at the resort were alright, I was surprised when they had a short rendition of the movie Grease. We also took a private tour arranged by one of the employees at the resort which gave us a look at the way people live outside the resort area, then we went to Rick's to watch the sunset which was really nice. (the sunset in Jamaica is really fast, probably less than 15 minutes) We didn't spend much time at the pool bar but Rayon and Jacynth are excellent bartenders-they keep you laughing and almost intoxicated. The resort was great, and we would definately go back. I hope this helps in your decision making, and wherever you go I hope you have a great time!!
