Accommodation - very nice, smaller but better than it's sister hotel Maya. Food - good variety. Beach - Lucky, this hotel still has it's beach, the hotels next door and further down have eroded beach - almost all gone. You can see sandbags, but that's not there fault as... more

An absolutely wonderful hotel, the staff were wonderful and plentiful, the food was, whilst not remarkable, certainly more than adequate with good restaurants available and always plenty of variety at the Buffet, and the swimming pool bar offered good variety too. The... more

Wonderful time at Club Viva Azteca
We stayed at Club Viva Azteca for a week in February 1991. Thought we had died and gone to heaven. The staff were very professional and friendly. By mid week they were all calling us by first name. The meals were very plentiful and lots of variety. The main dining room was very warm as there was no central air. The Italian dining room was just the oposite. Very cold. The rooms were very clean. Booked a garden view and got an ocean view. BONUS. We were planning on going back in Feb. 04, but there prices are increased substantially, so we are booked at a new property new PDC.
Loved the Viva Azteca-great for families
We stayed at the Viva Azteca last year and can't stop talking about it. We loved it. The staff was very friendly, the rooms were clean, the resort is beautiful and the beach was great. The food at the restaurant was fine--lots of selection, although I am not that adventurous so I ate alot of pasta. We were there with a 4 year old and a 6 month old--this was the perfect resort for both these ages. My 4 yr old had a blast at the kids club, the staff was great with kids. I was apprehensive about traveling to Mexico with a baby but this was the best resort for that---we were on the main floor so we could bring the stroller everywhere--the staff was sooo friendly with the baby--didn't seem to mind the mess he made at dinner. They were always giving me cartons of milk to bring back to my room fridge for his bottles. Always kept the fridge stocked with water and coke. The only things bad I can say were that the pool was very cold--Too cold for me or the kids to go in and there was a woman at the front desk who was quite grumpy--Our second key didn't work and she kept saying that she would get us a new one and every time would just hand us back the same key a couple of hours later. We finally gave up--we were traveling with another couple and had ajoining rooms--so we would just get into our room that way if one of us didn't have the key. None of that mattered though, because the rest was sooo enjoyable.!!! We would go back in a second. It was great for families who don't want the noisy, rowdy scene that is at some hotels.
wow
i've recently come back from a holiday of a life time in playacar. THe hotel was greatt, the staff 100/10. So much so I've planed togo back next year. THe staff couldn't do enough for you. Some staff were like family after only a few days. the food and the complex at the all- inclusive WOW
Enjoyed Viva Azteca
My husband and I just spent a week at Viva Azteca, and enjoyed ourselves a lot. The beach is stellar and the pool is lovely. The food is average, though about what I expect from an all-inclusive buffet (convenient). I particularly enjoyed the after-dinner drinks served in the courtyard every night (a different drink each night), and the mariachi band that entertained during dinner one evening. Also enjoyed borrowing kayaks (included in price). While I did not participate in the dance lessons, aerobics, volleyball tournaments, etc that are organized by the staff (included in price), they looked to be well-attended and enjoyed by the participants. Reading through this review board, I can't fathom where some of the complaints come from... the soap just smelled like soap (maybe not like Dove or Ivory, but like normal soap), and the bar overlooks the pool and beach (didn't seem like too far to walk to me at all). Also the pool was clean. The one complaint that I do agree with was the amount of alcohol in the drinks - the alcohol was often undetectable (and yet at times they were very strong - must vary by bartender). One other complaint - the nightly "shows" are about the quality of high-school plays; not much entertainment for adults, but probably entertaining for kids. Overall, the atmosphere at Viva Azteca was lively and enjoyable, and definitely enhanhced our vacation.
HOLIDAY FROM HELL 2003
We went to viva azteca 1 - 15 August 2003. After 2 days 2 out of 4 of us were very ill with food poisoning. There was a severe outbreak of Shigella while we were there. The drinks are watered down, the food was deffinately below par. The pool had 12 filters on it - but only ever 6 working in the time that we were there, so was never clean. The pool bar food was 1) never cooked properply 2) always had a lot of flies/wasps around it 3) not covered up completely so insects etc could get on it. The main resturant has no air conditioning so incredibly hot to sit and eat your meal. Reception area is open plan so again there is no air conditioning. At least there is air conditioning in your room which is a blessing. The beds are on the hard side but not to bad really. The "balcony" is so small that you cannot even get a chair on there to sit and appreciate the view. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
Don't do it !
Went to the Azteca foe 10 days July 13-23, 2003.The beach and ocean are beautiful, the swimming pool has alot to be desired. It seemed to always be dirty and never smelled any chlorine in it. The drinks are very watered down, only 2 bars and it,s unbeleivable to me that they never had enough cups or glasses. If you get hungry after 10:00 pm forget about it. On some nights they will put finger sandwiches out, made from the deli meat left over from breakfast. Again, at breakfast good luck trying to find a glass to put the apple juice in that they always run out of by 9:30 am. While I was there I spent a lot of time at their sister resort viva maya they are more attentive, much livelier, have a swim up bar and their food and drink are much better. They always have a restaurant open all night long where you can get a burger or pizza and fries. IF your thinking about going to the Azteca, DON'T. I'm still trying to figure out why the Azteca is more expensive than the Maya.
okay, but some problems
Hotel very good, beach brilliant. Food BAD. food poisioning after 2 days (2 weeks after holiday still ill and being test via own GP. Drinks watered down but apart from all this still had a good holiday. I would go to mexico again but not stay at Viva Azteca.
shigella outbreak at azteca
My family and I stayed at the viva azteca from 23rd July 2003 for two weeks, the hotel is very good and is all you can wish for in an all inclusive package, however please be aware that on our second day at the hotel all members of my family and about 40 other families all became very ill with symptons similar to food poisoning. myself and two other people (unrelated) were taken by hotel management for tests and found to have shigella. Many other people were tested and await the results at this time. MY TRAVELL who we travelled with then stopped any more uk arrivals untill the outbreak can be controlled. this ruined our holiday completely and my wife was hospitalised on our return to the uk, whilst my treatment continues at gp level. Shigella is an awfull illness to suffer from, very easily passed on and with possible complications in the future for those unfortunate to contract it. If you visit this area please be aware of this problem and take all precautions to prevent you and your family becoming another victim. help and advice on this matter is available at most gp,s or elsewhere on the nett.
Average
We have never been to Mexico before so it is hard to judge or compare our experience to anything else...so take my review with a grain of salt. I would describe the service as average. The food was sub-par. The buffet eating area was neat and clean but very hot. The restaurant staff was a little rude as well. One day when we were leaving I stood up and put my foot on my chair and bent over to tie my shoe and a staff member came over and embarrassed me in front of my family for putting my foot on the chair...granted, it probably isn't the best way to tie my show, but he could have used more tact in front of my family and friends...after all I paid a lot of money to be there. The bar is located by the swimming pool and is very nice. However, you have to ask the nar tender for ice if you want a coke, and he only gives you half of a glass. The drinks were really watered down. I often wondered if there was anything in them at all. I would recommend bringing yoru own liquor to add to their "drinks". Another thing with the ice...when they made a pina colada or margarita, they refused to use much ice...as a result, the drink would melt before you could even take a sip. The bar is extremely far from the beach. We found ourselves not getting drinks on several occassions because no one wanted to walk that far to get them...which I'm sure the hotel wants. The beach was beautiful, but the hotel doesn't realy have that much to do with that...it will be the same at any hotel. The rooms were very clean and the air conditioner worked great! They will not give you any shampoo, so you'd better bring your own. The do have some soap but it smells terrible. I nearly gagged everytime I smelled it. The shower would not work very well as it would not stay at a constant temperature: hot, then cold, hot then cold....very irritating. Also, our phone did not work. No exageration here. I mean it simply would not work...it wouldn't even dial one number. That was extremely irritating. The Italian restaurant they have was pretty good, but extremely under staffed. Our dining experience lasted over 2 and a half hours. My wife didn't even ger her entire order. The food was average and the air conditioner was weak. We did enjoy the nightly entertainment the staff put on int he theater each night. They are very talented. My wife would recommend not getting a manicure or pedicure there because she came out looking worse than she did going in. Lastly, there was this guy Mel that worked there. He would always find a way to stand in the middle of the walk way each morning and evening and ask us how our stay is going. It sounds nice, but it always ended with some sort of sale pitch about buying a membership to their hotel. We were not at all interested and we tried to make it obvious...but he kept trying to sell us anyway. One day when we gave him the cold shoulder, he went back to his buddies (who were also standing in the walkway) and made some sort of sarcastic comment about us. I have a lot of negative comments, but I don't want to give the impression that we didn't have fun. We all enjoyed the experience and we will definitely go back, but we will probably try a different hotel next time.
Don't get your moneys worth
I just got back from Viva Azteca. I was there from June 9 to 16, 2003. I had been in other Hotels in Playa del Carmen (Iberostar) and it is not nearly the same quality. Eventhough Iberostar is quite more expensive, I don't think Viva gives you your moneys worth. Breakfast is barely ok, lunch is terrible and dinner is good. Beverages are horrible, they serve you the worst cheapest alcohol they can find. They don't even put meat on their pizzas. The rooms are good, A/C works great and room cleaning is good. The soap in and out of the shower smells funny and you have to use is as shampoo as well. TV has only about 12 channels. The beach is very good, but the pool is so hot I couldn't stand to be in it when the sun was out, it is as hot as the jacuzzi they have there. Service is ok, the staff was friendly and helpfull. Those are the facts, you draw your own conlcusions...
