" Clean but dull "

Disappointed to find that if we wanted air conditioning we would have to pay 90 euros PER ROOM. Our 2 daughters were next door so that would have taken 180 euros out of our spending money! Rooms were kept very clean, but it was made as difficult as possible to self-cater. No cooking utensils, not even a sharp knife to cut bread, and a tiny 2 ring stove that took ages to heat up. I suspect all this is to force people to give up and go and eat in their pool bar, but as all they serve are snacks, you could not live this way for long. Also, a stupid rule about not consuming your own food or drink at their poolside - each time you wanted a drink of WATER you had to go back to your room! This was they claimed due to national legislation whereby Government Inspectors descend impromptu and check all holidaymakers receipts to prove the food has been paid for! I've never heard of anything so ridiculous. My daughter got told off for eating an ice lolly by the pool - the Iliada didn't even SELL ice lollies so she was hardly putting them out of business! I would not recommend Santorini for young families - nothing to do. The Perissa waterpark is very basic and not exactly thrill-packed; Santorini is a lovely island but definitely for honeymooners or older people or childless couples. My teenagers were very bored and younger kids I should imagine would be even more bored. We srtaye 14 nights but a week would have been plenty - you could easily see all there is to see on the island in a week. I recommend walking up Mesa Vuono to ancient Thira, we got up at 5.30am and started walking at 6am to avoid the heat. The mountain was in shade all the way up and you can stop at the hillside church en route for a rest. We reached the top at 8am, 30 mins before the booth opened. Very impressive site and very large. We were bck at the Iliada by 11am so could recover by lying by the pool for the rest of the day. Also be prepared to pay for the sunloungers on the beaches - far too hot to lie on a towel. Prices vary from 5-10 euros for a pair of loungers and 1 umbrella. If you hit the beach every day this can add up, especially if there are four or more of you. Santorini has a reputation as one of the most expensive of the Greek islands and this was certainly the case; food there was more expensive than in England. Also advise shopping around for the best deals on excursions - we went on all the Thomson ones and were very impressed with them, but other holidaymakers told us they had got much much cheaper deals with the independent operators - but there are so many of them you could easily spend days comparing prices. Going on the Thomson big trips (volcano & hot springs; earthquake village, sunset cruise) cost us £700 odd euros for 3 adults 1 child, to give you an idea.

Advice: Dusty and dirty

Activities: Oia, Fira, ancient Thira

Good for: Beach

" This was our 3rd visit to Santorini... "

This was our 3rd visit to Santorini and also Iliada studios, it was just like going home. The apartments are family run and they just cannot do enough for you. The apartments are cleaned daily, sunbeds are provided and there is always plenty of room around the pool. Santorini Island is beautiful and I don't think we'll ever tire of it, as one of the local shopkeepers said to me the first time we visited "Santorini is like a drug you just have to keep coming back for more", how true that is. There are plenty of places to eat, stay away from the sea front and walk into Perissa, there are so many restaurants set back from the main road. We loved Atlas, Finekas, Cycledes the food was excellent at all and great value for money. We hired cycles for our 2 week stay and cycled to Akrotira, we also walked from Thira to Oia, the scenery was incredible. A visit to the port in Vlichada is a must, call at the first Taverna as you come up the hill from Perivelos - "Fillippas", it is family run and they really make you feel welcome. Sadly we will not visiting this year as there as so many other Greek Islands we would like to visit however, one day we will definately be going back

" Iliada is a lovely place to stay if... "

Iliada is a lovely place to stay if you want a quiet traditional Greek holiday.

We stayed for a week with our two daughters, 9 & 13, who virtually had the pool to themselves for the entire week.

The complex is beautifully maintained, exceptionally clean and the staff/owners couldn't be more helpful.

There are no bars or discos nearby so no loud music or drunken holidaymakers - heaven.

Perissa is close enough to walk to for an evening meal with a great selection of restaurants; we tried lots of different ones and the food was good in all of them!

If you hire a car for a couple of days you can see much of this very small island; visit the red beach & a vineyard. Drive up to Thira (the capital) and take the all day boat trip to the volcano, very good value for money.

We liked it so much we are going back this year!

" This is our 2nd visit to Iliada... "

This is our 2nd visit to Iliada Studios and it certainly won't be our last. The Studios are immaculate and are cleaned daily, the owners look after you and even helped us with our Greek! (Very patient). Santorini is a beautiful island and something about it makes you want to return year after year.

Perivilos is a great place to stay, away from the hustle and bustle of the towns but within walking distance of Perissa and the local bus service to other towns and villages on the Island, including Thira (the capital) is pretty regular. We had prepared a list of recommended places to eat in Perissa and we weren't disappointed, our favourite place however was Gods Garden, gorgeous food and very reasonable prices, we also enjoyed Cyclades, Lava (on the sea front), Finakas, The Best on the sea front in Perivolos (little bit more expensive but great food) and had a fabulous pancake pudding at Atlas.

There is a very big supermarket in the middle of Perissa but I would recommend you check out the prices at a couple of the other smaller markets we found we could save up to a couple of euros on a bottle of wine which means of course more win over your holiday.

Santorini wines we enjoyed (and brought home) are Lava and Atlantis which you can get in red and white. Must mention the bakery which is open 24 hours had fresh bread rolls every day for lunch very cheap and gorgeous. Weather was fab, can't wait to go again next year.

" Whilst searching for the idyllic... "

Whilst searching for the idyllic Greek destination, my friends & I have visited many of the popular and some of the less popular Greek islands with the same "wish-list".

This year, after spending the traditional January afternoon in the pub with a huge selection of Greek holiday brochures, we selected Santorini. On arrival at our apartments, we felt at home immediately.

The owners were friendly, but helpful. On exploring the area on foot, we felt this is the place that we've been looking for 10 years! No neon, no thumping music, no English breakfasts, no Only Fools & Horses and best of all, very few kids! The village is determined not to grow into any of these things, and rightly so - we're going back!
