Booked this hotel as a surprise for...
3 / 10
Sep 2007, Mrs C Foster

Booked this hotel as a surprise for my husband, it was certainly that, but not a pleasant one. When I went to our allocated room I was very disappointed to say the least, it was very cramped, dark and dismal, and certainly nothing special, considering I had booked a Royal room, which from the pictures looked wonderful so don't be misled!
I proceeded to reception to convey my disappointment, whereupon after much discussion and very little help, I was offered two other rooms to view. Upon doing so they were not much better, with old stains/spill marks on carpets, stain on duvet cover, scuff marks and paint coming off skirting boards and in need of a good make over, nothing inspiring in these rooms. All 3 rooms I viewed were very tired. When explaining I was still not happy and considering not staying at all, I was told I would still have to pay the total bill, as I had not given 72 hours notice, how could I, I fully expected the rooms to be of a better standard. By this time it was 3.45 in the afternoon (rooms not ready till 3pm) and we were getting nowhere, so we decided on a room which I was told was the better of the 3, we then had to wait another 20 min for the room to be finished, as it had not been booked out for that day (obviously) even then, when entering the room and opening the window we were plagued with flies, room not very clean overall, very dated etc but unfortunately with very little choice this would have to do.
This hotel was very overpriced based on the standards I found, we will not be staying here again.

The elegance of the building and...
6 / 10
Aug 2006, Mr DJ Procter

The elegance of the building and regency history is very impressive at the Royal Hotel Scarborough. When we were there, the regency suite hosted supreme ambience to house two full sized snooker tables although I believe they are now gone.
The swimming pool is like an underground cave and is very luxurious and includes a steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi.
The hotel also boasts a fantastic sun-terrace which absorbs the morning sun brilliantly overlooking the South bay. The standard of the rooms is perfectly satisfactory and the hotel has 5 floors - aim to go on floors 3 and above to get away from the traffic noise at night but expect to be awoken by early morning seagulls!
Dinner is served in the large dining room with evening entertainment laid on but set aside a good2 hours for dinner as service can sometimes be slow due to the large volume of guests in summer.
The hotel also has an elegant bar and a fantastic welcoming staircase typical of its time.
All in all the hotel is good and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there - perhaps the rooms were on the pricey side but the elegance of the architecture makes up for this. A good resting place to absorb the charms of Scarborough’s south bay.
