The elegance of the building and regency history is very impressive at the Royal Hotel Scarborough. When we were there, the regency suite hosted supreme ambience to house two full sized snooker tables although I believe they are now gone. The swimming pool is like an... more

Tired but just about justifies its three stars
from A TripAdvisor Member
A hotel that no doubt in its time was very splendid. Impressive entrance, not sure i liked the fuit machines outside the lifts. Staff very friendly and also helpful and efficient. Decore tired and in need of refurbishment. Bedroom OK but sloping floor looks very strange. Food, average. Price of stay expensive compared to more modern hotels with better decore and facilities. A shame this hotel has been allowed to drop its standards when compared to how i can imagine it used to be.
Fantastic Break
from Chairgirl
We stayed at The Royal Hotel for four nights and enjoyed every minute. We upgraded to a superior sea view and couldn't have wished for a better room, it was spotless. The food was excellent, both breakfast and evening meal, we certainly didn't go hungry. The staff were very helpful and, although a couple of the girls in the restaurant were foreign their English was excellent. We found the lack of parking in Scarborough not too much of a problem as it is free to park from 5pm-10am and as we were visiting other towns around this coast we found these times ideal. For the two days we didn't use our vehicle we obtained a Holiday Accommodation parking permit which allowed us to park in the street until 1.30pm the next day. The staircase was the most impressive I've seen and everywhere I looked there was a chandelier. The hotel was within easy walking distance to the town and the train station, although it is advisable on the return journey from the town to catch the lift. We loved this hotel and Scarborough (a visit to The Leeds Arms a must) and would recommend it to anyone wanting that little bit of extra luxury.
Worst meal and £18.95 for a bottle of Mateus..
from dunfs
We usually stay in the Crown, but decided we would have a change..big mistake. Parking ...none. Room...no bedding for the children..or towels. Shower..cold View...what view? Bedding...dirty top quilt Service in Restaurant...slow, unfortunately relying on staff whose english was poor we struggled to establish which meals my children could eat safely..both have severe egg allergies. Meal...could not eat either the starter or main course..disgusting! When complaining was told..sorry! Wine...no wine menu given so we ordered a bottle of Mateus..we were shocked to be billed £18.95 for this...£2.99 at Tescos??? Pool..tiny Steam Room.... no steam. Changing room....carpeted...very hygenic, and smelly! Crown beckons!
Great position and views, shame about the parking
from A TripAdvisor Member
A very comfortable, if rather pricey, hotel in a good position if you want to visit the delights of Scarborough. Staff were generally polite and attentive and the room was comfortable with great sea views (but £115 a night B&B for a smallish room and a 30p "delivery" charge for the morning paper!). Restaurant was very good, but again quite expensive for a humble rep! Downsides were: 1. No parking facilities (had to use the NCP). 2. Miserable shower (5th floor...a fellow guest on the 3rd had no problems). 3. Slightly faded Victorian grandeur.
Good Quality Hotel
from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for a weekend, found the staff to be extremely helpful and the rooms to be of a high standard. The hotel generally was well kept and well run with an excellent breakfast in the morning. On the down side the pool facilties were disappointing, with the sauna and steam room not working. Overall a solid hotel for short breaks.
Not quite excellent yet !
from Pob-Bob
Room 418 was hot and stuffy, overlooking roof of kitchens, but was nicely furnished, the whole hotel is traditional and comfortable, but with a VERY impressive staircase in the entrance hall. Nice to have a pool also in the hotel. Location is great, and views over South Bay excellent, however carparking at a charge of £5 perday at an NCP a few streets away is a drawback, and stopping outside the hotel to load/unload luggage took two 'trips' around the one way system at start and end of stay, as no space available ! Food was fine, not spectacular, and service very slow, as the restaurant was severely understaffed. All staff were very apologetic, however, and keen to do the best they could under the circumstances. Not a place for anyone wanting the high life, or entertainment, but fine for a relaxing few days at a slow pace.
relaxing weekend
from A TripAdvisor Member
we stayed at the royal for two nights Saturday/Sunday 19th/20th March 2005. Having stopped here about three years ago when the rooms were very basic and badly needed a face lift,we didn,t know what to expect this time. On our last visit to the resort we stopped at the grand hotel round the corner ( never again what a pig sty). The rooms have all been refurnished to a high standard with everything you would expect in them ( including a trouser press, hairdryer, tea & coffee) Meals were very good with a good choice of six starters, main course and sweets to pick from.Service was a bit slow on the sunday night. Spent Sunday afternoon in the small swimming pool, sauna and steam room which was nice to relax in for a couple of hours. Parking is in the NCP carpark a few minutes walk away which is not that expensive as the hotel stamps your parking ticket which allows you 50% discount. If you are looking for a quiet weekend away the royal is a beautiful hotel with a fantastic staircase that hits you as soon as you walk through the doors with a lovely dining area and lounge/bar area to relax at night situated right in the middle of town
tiny room
from A TripAdvisor Member
My single room was TINY, as was the bathroom.... almost burned myself on the heated towel rail several times. Overpriced for what was on offer. Breakfasts excellent, but dinners disappointing: fancy descriptions on menu for what was mediocre, institutionalised cooking (with highly over-priced wines). Restaurant manager Tim Collins did his best to make all guests feel welcome: thank you Tim. Rest of staff impersonal in the extreme. Shall not stay there again: taxi driver recommends Biederbeckers or Castle!!
Parking a joke
from A TripAdvisor Member
Found the hotel reasonable, although on 5th floor lifts were slow; food was average, the staff attentive and helpful in the extreme; but the worst aspect was parking having to go overnight in a NCP site which is some way from the hotel (£4.50 per 24hr at March 2005). Almost got a parking ticket when bringing care back to hotel to load up.
Grandeur and Style with a smile
from Caz'n'kel
As a family we have visited The Royal for years now and love the beautiful staircases and chandeliers, now the rooms have been re-furbished they are of the standard you would expect from such a classy hotel! Room 505 is ideal for a family stay with excellent views over the beach and harbour. The coach parties do get in the way at breakfast time (sorry!), the restaurant manager Tim always looks after us well in the evenings and is always willing to accommodate us. The Ladies on the first floor is a real eye opener and only encourages us ladies to go!

Booked this hotel as a surprise for my husband, it was certainly that, but not a pleasant one. When I went to our allocated room I was very disappointed to say the least, it was very cramped, dark and dismal, and certainly nothing special, considering I had booked a Royal... more
