When this was queried, we were met with a barrage of belligerence, unhelpfulness, arrogance and downright rudeness from one of the receptionists, her attitude was unbelievable! The owner, mercifully, was more helpful and understanding, but unable to provide a room for us in the 'old' Villa Maria, moved us to another room the following day (still in the 'new' building) which had a front view.
The rooms in the 'new' hotel are very poorly soundproofed, and each was has an interconnecting door which is very thin and the tiniest sound can be heard from the next room, the night before we checked out (earlier than our intended date) I spent the entire night awake due to thunderous snoring coming from the next door room, so loud it seemed the snorer was in the same room!
Breakfast, on the second day, lacked cheese, ham, and even bread, due, we were told, to a 'sudden influx of guests'. A member of staff slapped a box of processed cheese slices in front of us, and when the orange juice eventually arrived on the serving table, it had obviously been watered down. My husband waited 40 mins for a cup of tea whilst staff continued to busy themselves wiping tables and carrying out small tasks rather than serve.
Although booked for a week, we checked out after just three days.
The original Villa Maria Hotel is very beautiful, set in lovely gardens, with a terrace and pool, and is very quietly situated whilst being within walking distance of Montecatini town. It is such a shame that some its staff are so rude, unhelpful and unwelcoming. It's website should also be updated and clearly state the situation/position of the rooms it has available, whether they are in the old building described, or in the newer hotel at the rear (of which there is no mention).
Montecatini Terme is a lively and interesting town with oodles of wonderful eating places, parks etc., and is the ideal base from which to explore Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Siena etc.
