Good in the 70's
from el33
Akrotiri Beach Hotel, Paleokastritsa, Corfu. My wife and I stayed here from 15th-29th Sept 06. The Staff were excellent. Wonderful views. There is a free bus service to Corfu Town and generally the place was clean, were the positives of the Hotel. When we arrived we deliberated whether to check out immediately, as we did not know of anything better in the area we stayed. This hotel was probably very nice when it was built presumably in the 70's but is now in need of major renovation. The advertised Hair Salon and Gift Shop were closed years ago. The restaurant reminded me of a school canteen, the crockery very small, breakfast was always the same and very greasy. Dinner was a set menu, we did not try this. We did try the pool bar for lunch but once was enough, unless you like frozen Mousaka. Our room was supposedly renovated, they had painted the walls and half the skirting, the carpet had not been replaced and was filthy, the lighting was very dim, the balcony furniture was very old and rusty which they had repaired with alluminium paint and sticky tape. All renovation work done was in a cheap bodged manner. There are no fire escape directions in the room probably because there are none. No smoke detectors either. The safety rails on the cliff side and steps to the beach feel very unsecure. Steps on the terrace have been repaired with sharp uneven tiles. There is much about this hotel that I feel would not meet saftey standards. The bar measures appear very meagre, the entertainment poor and do not stay in the bar after the lights are dimmed as you will get bitten by the mosquitos. Sun beds on the Rocky Beach and at the pool are free but some are broken, the matresses are very thin and useless or are old seat covers that are comfy but do not cover the bed. I would not recommend this hotel for children or people with walking difficulties. These are some of the negative points. Unfortunately there does not appear to be any better hotel in this area of Corfu, try an appartment. I can strongly recommend the Nereids restaurant which is just along the road form this hotel towards the port.
incredible views

We loved this hotel for its location and views! Rooms were quite plain - typical greek island hotel (quite basic for a 4 star) bathroom was a little cramped. All rooms have a terrace with view, and it is spectacular on both sides of the hotel (though maybe from the lowest floors on the beach-side are not quite as dramatic as others) A/C worked well TV was small but with some satellite coverage. Fridge for drinks was useful. Common parts of hotel very nice if a little 1960s.. Beach itself is nice but nothing special (they are far better ones elsewhere on the west coast) - and it is not acutally part of the hotel. A steep path leads down to it. The other side's rocky "beach" (as they describe it) is part of the hotel. There is no beach though. It consists of sunloungers on flat areas on the steep rocks - the sea below is fantastic, but access to the water is really poor and requires some dexterity... Breakfast was typical Greek Island Hotel buffet - lots of variety inlcuding slightly dubious eggs, bacon & sausage + toast, croissants, greek yogurt, fresh fruit, cereals, juice "drinks" tea & coffee etc. Dining area has a lovely panoramic view. Didnt try the dinner option... Used the single tennis court (behind the beach) 7 euros per hour for hotel guests - court itself is a little run down and lacking a bit of space behind the baselines - ok for a knock about. In conclusion whilst not the most modern hotel, the location & views were amazing. As such it was good value for money. If I was returning to Paleokastritsa, I would definitely consider staying here again.
Renovation needed!
from Tweetie976
Thumps up for: position, wonderful, on the sea. In Paleokastritsa it was the best located hotel. Then staff: very friendly and helpful. We stayed there last year and I agree with another reviewer who nopticed the difference between the website expectation and the reality. The reality consists af a '70s hotel, never refurbished. Very old style and decadent. Rooms are spacious, anyway. An investment in the renovation would represent an asset for this place, which is wonderful, I think the best in Corfu. Avoid places like Sidari, arranged for mass tourists. In Paleokastritsa you can change taverna every night (there is a taverna in front of Akrotiri where greek dances are performed who is very nice indeed) for eating and avoid hotel's restaurant...it's awful and sad. Its seems to have dinner at a hospital.
A Friendly Hotel

My wife and I have enjoyed holidays on various Greek Islands. On a recent holiday on Corfu we discovered an hotel which we thought was rather special. The Akrotiri Beach Hotel in Paleocastritsa is situated on an isthmus between two beautiful bays so there are stunning views in all directions. The hotel has great character and one of the secrets of it’s charm is that it is not too large and does not have the standard room that is the same anywhere from the USA to China. All the Staff, Front Desk, Dining Room and the cleaning ladies, are efficient, friendly and helpful. Our room was bright, well furnished and spotlessly clean. We look forward to a return visit.
A Good Hotel

We stayed at the Akrotiri for five days in May. The hotel is older and well-worn, but the fantastic view from your room offsets this. We looked out on the rocky beach side and it was beautiful. The breakfasts were very good, but as long as I have Greek yogurt and fruit, I am satisfied. We were on the bed and breakfast plan, but chose to have dinner at the hotel on our last night and it was excellent. It was a delicious dinner, we think maybe the best we had on the island. We also ate at Belvedere, which was excellent with a beautiful view, and Nerieds, which had a beautiful, tranquil setting. We rented a car for three days, and we are glad we did. It gave us a chance to see quite a bit of the island and to drive up into the mountains. It was very easy getting the car through the hotel. We drove over to Kerkira one day and despite the narrow streets and traffic, actually managed quite well. The beach was fun and we enjoyed the Posidon taverna everyday we were on the beach and even ate dinner there one night. The water was a little too cold for me to swim, but the people-watching was great and again it was a beautiful setting. We definitely chose the right area to stay in - Paleokatstritsas, but I'm not sure we would chose the Akrotiri again. But, then the location and views were compelling......
Terrific time, beautiful views...friendly and helpful staff.

My wife and daughter (9) and I just returned from a 2 week tour of Greece and the greek islands. We visited and stayed on Corfu, Mykonos, Santorini, Andros, Nafplio and Athens during our trip, and afterwards we all agreed that our stay at the Akrotiri Beach hotel was one of our favorites. A little background: First of all, if you are expecting/looking for a brand new Hyatt/Marriott/Hilton with brand new everything, plush pillows and bedding and a general feeling that you haven't left America and your comfort zone, than you may want to look elsewhere. (Though I'm not sure what you would find on Corfu like this, at least in the Paleokastritsa area). However, if you are looking for a hotel that has wonderful and helpful staff, an unbeatable location (you are located on a penninsula between two gorgeous bays), 2 beautiful pools (one is located on the beach and one looks out over the sea), and one of the best beaches in the area...plus an immaculatly clean hotel...but you don't mind that the hotel is a bit older and that the beds are a little harder than you may be used to in the plush American chains...than I would absolutely reccomend this hotel. We were treated so well by the staff...they were always attentive to our needs and offered help and advice for our activities on corfu. We only ate breakfast here, and we were happy that they served yougurt with honey and fresh fruit, cereal, various rolls, cold cuts/cheese, eggs (if I remember fried though...would have preffered scrambled), ham/bacon etc. It was included in our stay and I felt that it was a good value, and the breakfast room had great views of course. But remember, there are places to eat all over this area...so go exploring! Also..the bartenders mix great pina colda's :) Now the negative: I would not want to stay on the ground floor of the hotel. It was very dark down there, and I saw that a previous reviewer was very unhappy down there. I think this could make all the difference in your stay here. If you can get placed anywhere else (I think there are 5 floors, so the upper 3 would be great) than you would have a far better stay. Keep in mind I didn't stay in one of the lower rooms, so I could be wrong...but it just felt dark and not very appealing downstairs. One final note: I went diving with Georgio at the dive center next to the hotel. He was great, and we had a nice dive to" the bottle." But be prepared...the water can be COLD depending on the wind direction. It was 15 degrees celcius ( I think 50 F) when we dove, but he said this was quite cold, and it could easily rise 20 degrees with better winds and later in the summer. Good luck. I don't think you can beat this hotel in paleokastritsa. We ran into one lady who was here with her entire extended family...and she has been coming back for 25 years! You have to run a great hotel to get that kind of loyalty in a customer. But remember, not everything will be brand new and plush. This is Greece. Enjoy the simplicity of the marble, and especially the location!
for a relaxing, peaceful break the Akrotiri Beach Hotel is perfect
from Bramwellsfamily
We , myself, husband and two children (5 and 7) have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Akrotiri Beach Hotel and have loved every minute of our trip. We got our trip cheap at the last minute so didnt know what to expect. The hotel has prime position over Paleokatritsa and has sea views from every room, all rooms have a fridge, air conditioning (which is free) and bathroom, the electric is worked by your room key so remember if you want to charge a phone or camera you have to be in the room, as the electric goes off when you remove the key to go out. Great idea if you ask me. The towels and sheets are changed regularly and the hotel staff couldnt be nicer. Breakfast consists of orange juice, tea, coffee, bread, jams, yougurt, cheese, ham and eggs and sausages, something for everyone i think and plenty of fruit, which we often took out as a snack for the kids later. We were half board and stayed most nights at the hotel, be prepared to put on weight the food was great and we are fussy eaters, an example of one nights menu is stuffed tomatoes to start then greek salad then main dish of beef and then dessert, ice cream or fruit by the second week we were struggling to eat 3 courses and dont forget you get bread too. Dont worry about fussy kids either because they made my daugter chips (fried potatoes) every night not a problem. we went to the aquapark and saved 50 euros (thats a meal out) by going in a rented car and not with the rep and saved a few euros by getting a rented car from George Michalas just down from the hotel. great man. highly recommended. the glass bottom boat at corfu town is great for kids and adults and the hotel has a free bus which goes there wednesdays and friday mornings. We even walked up to the village of Lakones through the olive groves with the kids and further on is Bella Vista taverna with the most fantastic views all over the bay. There plenty to see and do if you want a bit of action but also its great to just unwind, take in the view and relax with a beer or two. The path to the beach is pretty good for walking younsters but would not be ideal for pushchairs or wheelchairs and some other people said that the lack of pavements when pushing a pram on the road was pretty hairy. Most of the beaches here are shingle or pebble and you pay for the sunbeds, around 8 euros for 2 beds. We ate out at the Poseidon, just below the hotel and also at the Neraids restaurant, just on the road from the hotel, be prepared for a wait for your food sometimes, eating out, as its all cooked fresh and takes longer, whereas service at the hotel is very fast. we hired a car and looked at Roda, which we thought was awful and had nothing greek about it, tacky shops and bars and a dirty grey beach and then we went to Gylfada which had a lovely beach, nice soft sand but very quiet, i think 2 supermarkets and 3 or 4 restaurants and you would definately need a car to get out and about. All in all i think this was the best resort for us, our kids had a fabulous time in the swimming pool most days and even enjoyed the food. we are definately considering going back next year. you will have a great time and dont forget some mosquito repellent for the evenings.
not a four star hotel

Stayed here at the start and finish of the Cosmos/Archers tour of mainland greece. Although dated , the reception and public areas were ok but the rooms were dreadful. All the people staying here doing the tour with us seemed to be allocated rooms on the second floor and our room , number 200 , was pretty dreadful , smelling of sewage and being generally shabby-the beds and pillows not provided for comfort. After touring mainland greece for a week and staying in far better hotels we were dreading our return. We were allocated room 204 this time which was marginally better-the hotel was unable to offer us anything on another floor until the day we were leaving anyway. The food was ok but it will be mushroom omelette all week for the vegetarians. The staff were pleasant enough and the night-time entertainment was above average. Having chatted to the other people from our tour we all had the same opinion-we wouldn't come back to this hotel again.
Checked in and checked out immediatly!

We looked at the web site - it appears to be wonderful - Driving towards the hotel with great expectations – entering the reception the expectations quickly diminished – entering the room was a shock – dirty – cracked glass, stale air. We did proceed to look at the pool area – several plastic sun beds were broken and had rusted staples holding them together. In our opinion this is not a four star hotel – we immediately left the hotel and found alternative accommodation for our stay in Corfu
A Wonderful Holiday at Akroiri Beach Hotel, Paleokastritsa
from KenandMarion
We stayed at the Akrotiri Beach Hotel in Paleokastritsa for the first two weeks in June 2005. It is an old hotel but consequently it is in the prime position right above a lovely beach with crystal clear water. We loved the beautiful, peaceful location and the tranquillity of this wonderful place, which in our opinion is every bit as good as the impression you get from the holiday brochures. It is kept spotlessly clean by a team of friendly hardworking maids. In fact all of the staff at the hotel are so friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for Aris, the Manager, and Ėlena on Reception and the standard of service and attention to the needs of the guests is every bit as good as at far bigger and more expensive hotels we have stayed in abroad over the years. The waitresses, Katrina, Fanny and Nancy made sure you had a very pleasant start to the day at breakfast. The food at breakfast was simple but very good. Spiros, the Maitre De made you very welcome at dinner but we stayed on a bed and breakfast basis as we love to eat out in the evening at local tavernas. Most tavernas were good but having tried the Belvedere where the food was superb and Aris and his family made you feel so welcome, we chose to eat there every night and some lunchtimes too, although the beach tavernas near the hotel are very good. The hotel rooms are comfortable if, like us, you like a hard bed. They are all en-suite, simple, clean, air conditioned with a fridge for your use and views that are simply wonderful. There was good entertainment several times a week and wine and bar prices were very reasonable. Overall our 2 week holiday at the Akrotiri Beach Hotel was very good value and we certainly hope to holiday there again. Minus points: In order to gain access to the beach visitors must be able to cope with numerous steep steps and, although not a problem for us, in our opinion the hotel is certainly not suitable for children as being on a cliff it is unsafe as children cannot be watched all of the time. To be honest - I think you would go to the Akrotiri more for the resort than the hotel - Paleokastritsa is simply stunning, its bays overlooked by impressive tree clad mountains, its waters ranging from indigo to turquoise, on this trip we even got to watch dolphins from... more
