Kos is a beautiful place to go, fantastic wine bars, architecture and a busy bar street for the 18-30 type people. However, the Ambvris hotel is a good 15-20 minute walk away from the main strip, and approx 20-30min from the beach. The walk for me and my partner (both very... more

most amazing people and place
we have never been to kos and are now hooked actually we are getting married there now. the family can not do enough for ever any time of day, we were treated as family in fact. steve ( one son) was a star ( hi mate if you get round to looking. i made your cake) advise anyone wanting to relax to go there but like others say the rooms are basic but have all you need. the road to town was not the best but 5 euro taxi ride sorts that.leigh and fi
Better and better
After returning to the Ampavris last year and receiving such a warm and friendly recognition from the family as well as an even better holiday I really didn't think that this year could possibly beat it. But I was so wrong! It was amazing! I can't express in words how perfect this holiday was but I would strongly recommend that you see for yourself.
Typical Greek Family Accommodation
All the family make you very welcome at these apartments, which are situated on the outskirts of Kos town. Accommodation is typically Greek and simple, you get hot water if the sun shines (which it usually does) otherwise it’s a cold shower but this is Greece – no problem! Adequate kitchen facilities with a two ring hotplate, fridge and a kettle, just enough to do breakfast and a snacks but not a four course dinner (Why do cooking with all the local Tavernas?). Most rooms have air conditioning at an extra cost. The bar is run by George’s sons who are masters at every conceivable cocktail and is open until 3 am every night. A Greek night is held very Tuesday night and this is the most authentic ‘Greek Night’ you will get, all the family; nieces, nephews, neighbors, local villagers, they all come! To walk from the town takes approximately 10 – 15 minutes with the road being very narrow. However Taxis are readily available. Outside the hotel would recommend the Olympian Taverna which is located just ahead as you approach Kos town at the road crossing lights, typical Greek fare. I will end by the sign at the pool bar ‘Be Happy, no worries’ you will enjoy.
Great Holiday!
We recently returned from the Ampavris, we had a great holiday. For the money it was great, being a travel agent and very fussy myself, I found this property good value, basic, but clean. Location was great if you dont intend being in the middle of it all, but easy walk into Kos Town where you will find plenty of restaurants, bars etc. Go to the main square in Kos Town, you can do plenty of people watching there, we often used to have a coffee (very good), watching the world go by. The family at the Ampavris were extremely friendly and made our stay very enjoyable. We hired a car for the whole holiday which is well worth doing as we got to see so many places, all within easy reach! If your looking for a cheap getaway without all the luxuries then this is ideal. We would certainly consider going again!
wonderful place
we had a truly wonderful stay at the Ampavris Apartments this May. First few days were a bit windy but after that it just got hotter and hotter. The apartments were basic but clean. The waterworks were a bit dodgy sometimes but nothing to complain about. The family that run it George and his family always made you feel very welcome, and they put on a Greek Night with all the entertainment supplied by the family !!! The pool was just lovely, if a little cold !!! but the jacuzzi made up for it. the only negative thing about the pool is they donot supply cushions on the sun loungers so most people bought cheap lilo`s to lie on. there is also a mini supermarket just around the corner which sells just about everything !!Just 20 mins walk into kos where there are loads of tavernas and shops and the beach isn`t much further. all the greeks were very friendly and always happy to oblige.we would most certainly go back.
Ambavri worked out good value, very basic but i liked it.
Booked a cheap deal with firstchoice, a weeks stay at the ambavri with flights was 147 pounds. The apartments were basic, self catering with basic facilities. For the price I could not complain, it is 2*, we wanted cheap and cheerful and it was. There was no tv, the shower was tiny and some things looked old, but it was all clean and if you wanted help or had any problem, the family were more than happy to help. Food was reasonably priced at the bar (sandwiches, burgers, pizzas , et c). The pool was open from 8am - 8pm, there was a supermarket nearby (4 minutes walk) where you could buy newspapers, swimming stuff (armbands, floats, etc) food, etc. It costs 5 euros for a cab to/from town though I often walked. Town is is the same distance as the beach - about 15 minutes so its a bit of a trek but its cool. Everything is basic here but we has simple needs and these were met. If you are seeking luxury though you may want to pay alot more, but I'd stay here again. For the price I couldn't knock it.
Family holiday at the Ambavris
We spent a week at the Ambavris having booked it as a late deal. We were reassured by the other postings I read here and as a result thought we would add ours. The apartments are about a 15-20 minute walk from Kos town which was too far out for some but excellent for us as we could enjoy the advantages of a slightly out-of-town location—larger and quieter pool, beautiful countryside, no 18-30 element etc. Some apartments had air-con you could rent (about Euro 7 for a night) which we paid for as the sound of farm animal (cockerels etc.) and insects (cicadas) was quite deafening at night with the doors open! The rooms were basic but clean. Pool was lovely and toddler pool was quite safe. Clientele was family based and couples. Many enjoyed the pool/snack bar but we felt it was rather over-priced (as these things often are) and the menu was rather chip-heavy for us! The staff were always very helpful, generous and friendly. Kos itself was a good family location. We weren't in the market for it, but what we saw of the night life seemed lively and quite sophisticated. Generally Kos had a reasonable balance between "traditional" Greek elements (for those who were looking) and the convenience of touristic concessions such as English bus timetables etc. Overall a safe bet for an enjoyable, convenient and value for money family holiday.
Lovely place to stay - The Ambavris
Me and my mum have just returned from the Ambavris (13th May - 21st May 06). We loved it there, weather was great, food was tasty and reasonable. The family who run these apartments are all very friendly and up for a laugh and they keep there guests very happy. Steve works mainly in the evening and is quite an entertainer. Can't complain about the apartments at all, they are basic but have what you need. People in our apartments were of all ages which was nice, and all very friendly. There isn't nothing at all to complain about because we had a brilliant girlie holiday. Definately recommend this to people, you will have a wicked time. We certainly did!! We will definately go back. Also Kos Town is really really nice and the far east chinese restaurant is delicious!!
Fantastic
We have just returned after 1 weeks stay at the Ampavri. These apartments are highly reccomended - the best £300 ever spent. Would definightly return to these apartments the only thing we could fault was that we didn't book for 2 weeks instead of 1. George, Elenie, Steve, Costa and Chris are the most pleasent friendly people you could ask for, nothing is too much trouble. We can't praise these apartments or people enough.
Ab Fab
This was possibly the best holiday i have ever been on with my family. The hotel is only small and situated about 5 minutes taxi ride out of the town centre. It is family run and they are so friendly. George and Eleni own the hotel but you will mainly see their three sons (FIT!!!) working there. Kostas, Steve and Chris. Steve is an excellent host for the evening providing much entertainment with his erm...interesting tricks. By the end of the first day you will feel like you are one of them. Can't get much better. Already booked to go back next year.
