If there is any piece of advice you ever listen to in your life, make it this one - do not ever stay here! When we arrived, we were given a room which had not been cleaned- damp, crumpled towels, dirty unmade beds etc. We complained and were taken to 3 other rooms which... more

Hell
I stayed at the Mount Royal for one night and had a room the size of a closet that just fits a bed and tv. I couldn't believe the size of this "room", my gilfriend was so appauled she slept with her clothes on. Bad smells were lingering in the halls of urine and garbage. You dont have an air conditioner and have to share the bathroom with the rest of the floor. The people at the front desk were rude and the place is a fire hazard by any standards. The place should be condemmed. Avoid the mount Royal Hotel!!!!
cheap, but not good
I stayed for three nights. The shared bathrooms were generally rather dirty and only o.k., if you got there right after the cleaning lady. At least, they cleaned twice a day. Unfortunately, some guests think it´s cool to put their hair on the mirror and on the wall. The first two nights we had a room for four people with TV (no remote) and AC. On my night in a single room, I didn´t have an AC. The rooms are very simple. You get what you pay here. The area around the hotel is o.k., however, and safe.
It's PERFECT if you remember it's a HOSTEL.
Just a few lines to speak well about this HOSTEL. I read this forum before going there but after i did the reservation ONLINE and I was really SCARED. There are lots of people that love to scare with all that dangerous comments. Finally the hostel was perfect. YES! simple rooms and shared bath but if you want just to sleep is a perfect place. The beds are the best. PLEASE PLEASE! Don't scare people with your comments. TELL THE TRUTH! If anyone read this and have doubts please mail me. pedroo52@hotmail.com. If I had read this forum before the reservation I would have booked another hotel but, FORTUNATELY, I stayed there and it was perfect (always remembering that it's a hostel) Don't be afraid with the area. the 96th with broadway is full of live and it's not absolutely dangerous. I have slept in worst places, specially those whith shared rooms for at least 10 people or more. Pedro.
please dont stay here, i wish i had read the reviews first
i stayed in the mount royal hotel in august 05, first of all it is certainly not a hotel, it is a filthy dirty smelly place which should consider itself lucky to be called a hostel at best. by all means if u like dirt, urine, other peoples hair and a babies soother left in the shower, stay in the mount royal hotel, or indeed if u enjoy nasty smells in the corridoors, i would rather not know what they were. The lack of air conditioning was a complete joke, even though we were lucky enough to have two fans in our room it was much warmer inside than out. trust me saving a couple of dollars is not worth it if u have to spend a night in this hell hole and the staff at the front desk were extremely unhelpful
Horrible
DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THIS HOTEL! It is a very unpleasant place. They don't have a/c in the middle of the summer. The bathrooms are like dirt place... I'd rather sleep outside the hotel at least you get fresh air than in the hotel. It feels like HELL!!!!
I should had slept in my car
This hotel is the worst.. first when we got there the male receptionist was rude and thinks he knows better,,, the They giving us a no AC room. we don't have a choice because we can't have our money back.... Please don't stay in this hotel or even considering taking it It will mess your whole trip trust me .. I am swearing to all the saints an d goddeses...
Terrible/ It's worst than a prison cell.....
we were disappoiaugnted when arrived to mount royal on aug on 27 th 2005. I understand this is an unexpensive place but didnt excpect it to be that horrible. U going to tell me that there is no a/c in summer time? What is that all about ? Are we dogs or animals ? THe room that we got was worse then prison cell atleast they have a/c in jail and dont have to pay. Showers is another story , i came from European country and saw lot of things Nothing is like this. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND TO SLEEP ON BEANCH AT CENTRAL PARK THEN AT MOUNT ROYAL HOTEL . Central park air is fresh at night. PLEASE DONT BE FOOL BY THE PICTURES THAT U SEE IN HOTEL WEB SITE. if u are planning to stay at mount roayl hotel think twice.....
Was expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised...
First, it's nearly impossible to find a place in NYC for mid-August... and second, it's even more difficult to find a place under 100 dollars for a private room. When faced with these limited options you can't expect 5 star standards. When booking online I found many good to down right horrible reviews for this hotel/hostel. I had no choice however as this was one of the only placed available on a moments notice. I was expecting the worst when I arrived but was pleasantly surprised. The main entrance and check in was clean and welcoming. The staff checked us in with ease and politeness. The hostel actually is comprised of a few buildings attached together and were directed to go through the back courtyard to another building on 95th street (the main entrance is on 94th). Our room, a double bed in a private, was on the 6th floor. We found clean sheets, towels and soap on the bed waiting for us... not to mention cable tv and a huge closet. While there was no AC (and it was the hottest days of the summer), we found positioning the fan on our luggage right next to the bed provide ample relief for night sleeping. Some may have issues with shared bathrooms, but to those who have endured dormitory living in the past, the use of bathroom shoes and cold water will be a revival of college memories. All in all, my experience was great and I would definately stay here (in a pinch) again.
No AC, kinda dirty, yellow-stained sheets
I hadn't ever been to NY, and I heard hotels were expensive, so we stayed at Mount Royal. I did not know there would be no AC. The sheets on the bed and the towels were all white with yellow stains on them. The lock on the door was kind of broken and the bathroom was gross. Looked like they just painted over the mold and mildew in the bathtub. It was kind of scary and I thought I would pay about $75 with taxes but hotels.com charged me $90 instead. Location isn't great, but it is close to the subway, just totally out of the way for everything else.
Terrible
Because of my experience with this hotel, I will never book another hotel online unless I have already stayed there. First of all, this place is neither "royal" or a "hotel." It should be more appropriately named as a "hostel," though that may also be giving it too much justice. I expected a double occupency room, as it was portrayed through the website I used. When I got there, I was given a key to a room that contained exaclty three items - a full size bed, a fan, and a television. The room looked more like a very run down dormitory than a hotel. When I asked for the double occupency room I had thought I paid for, I was given the explanation that those rooms contained a BUNK BED and that they were very small, so they thought I would be more comfortable in the bigger room. Fair enough, but I was traveling with my younger brother and we wanted our own beds. Luckily we were only there one night, so we sucked it up. The staff was VERY rude and seemed to find it funny that we were stuck in this situation. They even charged us $4 just to keep our bags in a storage room (which, by the way, smelled like ----). The bathroom was cleaned shortly after our arrival, however, upon initial inspection there was a HUGE glob of hair stuck in the drain. If you ever go to this hotel - you must bring your own towel, flip flops, toiletries, etc. Oh, and by the way, if there's toilet paper in the bathroom consider yourself lucky. Oh, and don't stay in the summer - there's no air conditioning and you will be lucky to have a fan in your room. And don't ask for your money back or they will just laugh at you. Next time, I'm spending the extra $50 to stay in a nice hotel. Not a crap hostel.
