" Just returned from a 1 week stay, had... "

Just returned from a 1 week stay, had a lovely time, very relaxing. Staff were friendly and polite, not forever pestering you either.
No, it isn't 5 star, but neither are the prices.
Food was a mixed bag. The buffet breakfast was good with plenty of choice, The evening meal, again buffet style, was only adequate. Lots of choice with the theme nights, so not too repetitive. The main drawback was that none of the food was very hot. But if you are on room only, or B&B, the a la carte option is there. The off site restaurants are pretty good and were a little better value, and you can always catch the shuttle bus to another hotel.
We went to to Cairo for a day, phew, 10 hours on a coach. To be fair, if you haven't been to the Pyramids I would say it's worth it. I did hear that there was a flight option from Taba, and rumoured to be cheaper, so could be worth investigating.
The beach is pretty good, a bit stony in places, but it's like swimming in an aquarium. We even spotted a turtle only 20 yards from the shore.
Yes, it was very hot, but we expected that. If you are not good with 40+ then go when it's cooler.
The airport is ok, got ripped off with the visa, signs and visa itself say $15, but the guy wants $20. Still, it is only £2.50. Transfer to the hotel is only 45 minutes, but do watch out for the baggage guys.
Would definitely go again.

" I am puzzled by some of the negative... "

I am puzzled by some of the negative comments. We found our stay at The Marriot to be an excellent one. The pools are huge and the staff readily supply large towels. The snorkelling is good, but the staff advised us to walk a few hundred yards up the beach to find the best snorkelling. All equipment can be hired at the hotel. We pre-booked a car from / to the Airport which costs£30.00 each way but was well worth it, especially if you book via the internet. There are no taxis at Taba Airport.

The staff were friendly and attentive. The trip to Jerusalm was an excellent experience - the Hotel cannot be blamed for long delays at the Israel Egypt border. ( 1 hour each way). Guests need to understand the sensitive political nature of the area and be tolerant.

The food was varied and good. Hot coffee always arrived at our table when we sat down. We did not use the minibar and were not charged. We booked a large double bedroom that was to a good standard. The balcony furniture was a little tatty Vs say the Intercontinental but I saw no Hotel on the strip that I would not have stayed in - the Marriot definitely had the best pool though and children would love it. I organised golf via the Hotel ( the course is excellent and the 15th hole adjoins the hotel) It is a 15 minute walk to the clubhouse, or you can take a bus every half hour.

I was advised to take a warm fleece as the evenings are cool in Feb. Good advice. Many people turned up with just T shirts - a bad move. The days were lovely though and cerca 19 - 24 degrees.

I met lots of people back for their 2-3rd trip to the Marriot. I will be going back next year for sure. Beats hiring a crappy villa in Tenerife or Gran Canaria on a building site any time. Lovely people, and you can visit Jordan and Israel.

" After reading some of the comments I... "

After reading some of the comments I was a bit worried about visiting, especially as it was just myself and a friend both of whom are girls under 21.

We arrived at the airport and bought a visa for visiting places outside Taba (you don’t need one if you intend on staying in Taba the whole time) and got our baggage and were on the coach in about half an hour so we were pretty impressed!

We arrived at the Marriott and had to queue to check in which is normal but it only took 20minutes and were then pointed in the direction of the room.

The room was really clean and really well decorated! No bugs no funny smells and no dust at all!

Being on half bored we had to eat the buffet which was hot and a varied spread ranging from chips to themed nights we normally went to dinner at about 10 and dinner stars at 8 but it was still hot!!

During the day we lounged around the pool or by the beach (if on the beach get sun beds with wind protectors) a lot of people reserve sun beds but you can normally find some good ones still at about 9 ish. We also had a walk round the other hotels but I don’t think you can use their pools.

Lunch we normally had in the pool bar was really nice and quite good price wise.
We charged load of stuff to our room it was quite reasonable and much easier than carrying cash with you.

The spa there is nice and the gym and Jacuzzi are free for hotel guest we both had massages as well which were well worth the price.

Of an evening after dinner we either got the tut tut up to the shops to have a walk around or go to a one of the restaurants up there. Also the Marriott has some good entertainment but the organiser left half way through the week.

There is a tiny super market and pharmacy as well as some gift shops but not much else if you buy food or bottled water to bring back to the hotel then put it in a bag as sometimes they get a bit funny about it.

Staff at the hotel were amazingly helpful and made us feel really welcome.
We enjoyed our time there so much we are planning another trip.

Hope this helps.

Have a great time.

" Have just returned from a really... "

Have just returned from a really relaxing holiday to Taba (despite taking our two boys aged 8 & 6!) We have never heard of Peltours or Astraeus before, but they have been fantastic throughout and we wouldn't hesitate in using Peltours again. Their attention to detail throughout our stay made us feel really valued. Astraeus were also very good.

The Marriott hotel seemed by far to be the best hotel within the resort of Taba Heights - definitely had the best beach and the facilities, cleanliness, layout and restaurants were extremely good. There is also a handy gym with everything you need to burn off the calories from the Egyptian desserts!

Overall, the staff at the Marriott were very good. The waiters and housekeeping staff were fantastic! They were very helpful and especially made a huge effort with the children - making a big fuss of them and having a laugh. This made the stay all the more pleasant.

The temperature during our stay was very hot - about 45 degrees each day. There is a constant breeze and so you don't really feel the full effect, but dehydration sets in very quickly. You can't drink the water in Egypt and the hotel doesn't supply this as a matter of course, however at the time they had "deals" where you could buy 12 bottles for the price of 8, which at first seemed a lot of water - but you soon get to realise just how much you need it! So it was worth taking advantage of the saving.

Although it seems a bit daunting to have lots of security around the hotel, including armed police when you go on trips or transfers to and from the airport, we felt so safe and this made the holiday all the more relaxing for us.

We went on the day trip to Cairo to see the Pyramids, Sphinx and Museum. There is not a flight from Taba to Cairo and so the day was very long and tiring. This being said, we were glad to have done it and the Marriott provided us each with a large breakfast picnic, water and kept the buffet restaurant open late so that we could have a meal on our return if we wanted to. Once again, the Peltours staff were very attentive throughout this day trip.

As with all holidays, there are some things that you would want to change, so have just listed a few pointers to be aware of - hope they help.

1) The beds are extremely hard - having spoken to other tourists at the other hotels, this seems to be a common thing throughout.

2) Drinks are expensive - beer & wine is about £3.00 a pint/glass.

3) Service in the restaurants can be very slow at times - mainly breakfast, evening meal and poolside waiter service.

4) The poolside beds & umbrellas get taken up very quickly! People tend to put their towels on the beds early in the morning to reserve them. You just seem to have to go with the flow if you want a bed & umbrella by the pool!

5) You have to check out the room by 12:00 lunchtime, which is a bit of a pain if you have a late flight. We paid the additional $50 (about £28 at the time) to keep the room until 5.00pm - this was really worth it especially bearing in mind the temperature and having children.

6) If you have small children who love chicken and fish to eat, you need to be careful at mealtimes. They don't seem to fillet this and ours found it difficult to eat.

Overall, we had a really good holiday and would go back tomorrow.

" I’d never been to Egypt before but... "

I’d never been to Egypt before but was told it was fantastic. It was dark when we arrived but it still looked stunning, as we entered our room we couldn’t have been happier. It was really clean, and the bed was huge and the view from the balcony was incredible, you could see Jordan, Saudi Arabia and a few other places. In the morning we went for our breakfast.

They had everything from omlettes to fruit and yoghurt. I was a little worried because I am a fussy eater, but I had nothing to worry about, there was plenty for me to choose from. After breakfast we took a walk to the beach, it was lovely although you couldn’t really go for a swim as the water edge was quite rocky, but there were plenty of sun loungers for you to sit and enjoy the view. There was also a bar, which helps.

The swimming pool was great, and always had plenty activities going on, volley ball, aerobics and lots more. We were only half board so had to but our lunch. We had this from the pool bar, on the first day we ordered a Marriott burger each. We didn’t do this again as 1 burger was more than enough to feed both of us. The staff couldn’t have been nicer, there was someone there 24hours a day.

They came and made the bed and cleaned the room everyday. And on 1 occasion when we ordered room service it was wrong, we phoned reception to inform them of the mistake and the Manager came and he couldn’t have been more sorry. He gave us a new meal, for free and a voucher to go to the on site restaurant for dinner. The bar at night was good too, we got to know the staff and our drinks were always waiting for us when we went down. The entertainment was either a belly dancer or a DJ, both very good.

The drinks can be quite expensive though, on our first night it was my Husbands birthday so we had 1 too many to drink, as we got the drinks charged to the room we didn’t know how much we had spent till the next day when we went top reception to pay the bill. It was over £70, and when we worked it out it was just under £5 for a vodka and coke, so be prepared. There are a few shops on the site, gift store, jewelry shop and a couple more. So we decided to leave the site in search of a shop to but drink hoping this would be cheaper.

After walking for about an hour (all up hill) we found an Esso garage, we bought our vodka for the same price you would in the UK and headed for the hotel. On the way back it was horrible, all these men were sat along the road side, staring at me. Of course I wasn’t wearing very much and the women over there have to be covered up, so I was a bit of a novelty for them. I couldn’t believe how different the staff were to the men on the street. My husband wasn’t happy either but he decided it wasn’t a good idea to even look at them about 60 Egyptians against him just wouldn’t have been fair.

I decided to put it behind me and not leave the complex again. There isn’t much to do onsite, they do have tennis courts and a spa. I highly recommend going for a massage, it was the best I had ever had. There is also a casino at the next hotel which you can go to but I didn’t bother and I didn’t let my husband go either.

All in all we had a fantastic honeymoon, however I would have taken more money had I know it was that expensive, and so I could have done snorkeling and more water sports. But for a truly relaxing holiday and a great tan I would recommend this to everyone.

" My husband was not too keen but I... "

My husband was not too keen but I persuaded him and our holiday to Egypt was one of our best. Although we had read some disturbing reports about the Astraeus aircraft we were delighted that none of it was true for us. Our luxury coach trip from the airport to the resort was excellent. The Marriott Taba 5* Resort is beautiful. Unspoiled and secluded on the Red Sea and uncrowded (being January) with very friendly staff who all spoke excellent English. The self-service food was excellent, plentiful and displayed very attractively. The weather was lovely and sunny during the day and cool/cold in the evenings.

We took two trips. Staying one night in Cairo to see the Pyramids and Sphinx which were definitely worth seeing. The day ended with a dinner cruise along the Nile and a night in a luxury hotel. The coach trip to and from Cairo was about five hours but in a luxury coach it was worth every hour.

Our second trip was to Jordan to visit Petra. A sea crossing of about 1.5 hours and a two hour coach trip to Petra. A definite must for anyone going to Egypt. It is a wonderful place and one can walk, horse ride, camel ride or travel by horse-drawn carriage for the six mile round trip.

Although we had not heard of Peltours before we would definitely travel with them again. We had the best attention at all times.

" Arrived at the Marriott in the... "

Arrived at the Marriott in the evening, was not sure of the setting as it was dark. The hotel is beautiful, with waterfalls in the foyer, very large and informal. A lot of security surrounding the hotel, sometimes annoying but you knew it was for your safety. Exceptionally clean, rooms are big and roomy and decorated tastefully. Buffet meals are good, waiters very friendly and like a chat.

We were only there for 7 days but managed to fit in 3 trips, very long days, Israel, Jordan and St .Catharine’s monastery, great trips the Peltours reps are excellent and looked after you well as did the guides. The beach is clean although you need something on your feet when you go to the water as its very stony, good snorkeling as its got reefs just off the beach you can walk to the reef.

Booked as a late deal very impressed with the whole holiday.

" Arrived 4.3.06, left 11.3.06
... "

Arrived 4.3.06, left 11.3.06

Flights
Booked through Peltours, who were fantastic, flew with Astraeus, who were also very good. We paid £50 for an upgrade, which was so worth it, especially their dedicated check-in for this class. Flight was delayed 90 minutes both ways. Should be 4.5 hours, headwinds increased this to 5 hours 20 mins on our return.

Weather
Very hot in the day, up to 30 degrees, but when the sun goes down at around 5pm, because is a desert climate it cools down considerably but leaves a very pleasant 15-18 degrees. Heat is dry so you don't sweat.

Hotel
Very good international hotel, but when you are there really you could be anywhere in the world. Food was buffet style in the main restaurant and we always found something to our liking. Eating breakfast outside in the sunshine, looking towards Saudi was memorable. We used 1$ bills to tip staff, which they can exchange easily. Some of the less thoughtful guests tipped in English pound coins but the staff have to find another guest who will covert this in to $ or Egyptian £, which was a pain in the last few days, for the sake of a little fore thought. Staff fantastic. Hotel was clean and well maintained, we had no complaints. 2 for 1 happy hour, beer only in the lobby bar was poorly supported which meant service was great, and atmosphere relaxing.

Snorkeling
Just off the beach are a series of reefs, which were brilliant. Walk out from the flags on the beach, don’t need to swim it is too shallow. First reef is here and then swim to wards the new hotel. Don’t go in via the yellow buoys or you’ll be exhausted by the time you reach the reefs above. Anyway all the ‘muppets’ walk all over the reefs closest to the buoys so there’s not much to see. Buy a waterproof disposable camera before you go.

Lots of coral and shells but don’t take any, as you can be fined $2,000 at the airport if they catch you with it. I saw innumerable fish; highlights were a Common Porcupine fish, Black Spotted (near the beach!) and Blue Spotted Rays, shoals of Longnose Parrotfish, lots of puffer fish, Clearfin and Indian Lion Fish, a Pharo Cuttle Fish and a sea snake. A Broomtail Wrasse, which was enormous, followed me on several days which was spooky. I also nearly bumped into a Snowflake Moray eel which was scary.

Other reviews have said walk to Hyatt for jetty and better snorkeling. I felt reefs at Marriott were far better and no need to walk. And the Marriott easily had the best beach.

" We went to this resort on a sort of... "

We went to this resort on a sort of bargain break price through Peltours and nobody could ever complain that it wasn't good value - it was excellent.

The flight out was a bit of a mess due to atrocious weather conditions abroad grounding our outbound transfer but to Astraeus's credit they quickly sub-contracted an alternative airline and we lost only 2 hours. By way of compensation we enjoyed free drinks on the flight, which was handled by Excel Air. The return flight was on an Astraeus 757 which was very comfortable with 36" pitch seating (first class legroom), great crew, smashing cabin staff and spot on timing. Transfers to and from the airport and the resort are handled very well indeed using well-driven hi-line modern coaches with luggage taken from the coach to the room by unseen hands.

Our room was delightful. It was large and beautifully appointed with a very attractive terrace overlooking a small garden. Some people may find the beds a little firm but we slept like babies, the air-con is a dream and the fittings throughout are all of good quality. The en-suite bathroom is good with plenty of pressure through the shower unit - however, the tub is small if you want a bath. Room servicing is done well. This hotel is situated on a large site - it must cover several acres and a great deal of thought and care has gone into the landscaping. The gardens are laid out exquisitely and they are well maintained. In the years to come they may prove quite an attraction in their own right and anyone who is interested in gardens will find much to enjoy here.

The main restaurant is the Andalus. Its big and airy and meals are served from about 06.30 until 10.30 every morning and 18.30 until 23.00 during the evening. Everything is from the buffet and its all pretty good with a very wide choice. If we have a criticism, it would be the lack of choice and somewhat unattractive presentation of fish dishes but some of this may be due to the fact that during our stay, a very important Islamic religious holiday occurred and about 1000 Israeli Arabs descended upon the hotel for 4 days which may have influenced the cuisine. Some curious fish presentations appeared and they were not attractive at all. We did not get a chance to try the Italian restaurant as it was used as an overflow to accommodate all these extra guests. Staff in the hotel, restaurant, grounds, bar, everywhere, were courteous, helpful and could not have been better - on a scale of 1-10 they would merit an 11...!

The weather was a bit mixed - when it was sunny it was warm but when the clouds obscured the sun there really was no heat in the day but hey, it's January! Also, a constant wind blows from the Northeast and while this must be very nice in summer when the temperature is high, it's a bit spiteful in winter. Furthermore, flies were an absolute curse for a few days until the hotel management got them under control. Be advised that unless you are into snorkelling or diving there is absolutely nothing to do outside the hotel. The glass-bottomed boat is to be recommended and the guys who run this over the coral reefs and fish shoals sure know their stuff so don't miss out on it. We didn't take the excursions to Cairo or the pyramids but those who did found it a long day (4am start).

We met some of the nicest people on this holiday and it was a great break but would we return to Taba ...? No, leastwise, not until the airport has been sorted out because although we had no delays waiting for our inbound flight, the thought of spending one extra minute longer than necessary in that departure lounge would be enough to put anyone off and we could all do without local guys hanging around the toilets handing out bits of tissue and pestering for tips - why do the authorities allow them in anyway?

" If you are looking to get away to a... "

If you are looking to get away to a holiday resort which is quiet, with a lovely beach and great snorkelling /scuba facilities then Taba Heights is perfect.

The sea is just waist high for a fair way out making exploring the coral reefs easy, and a Dive centre 5 minutes away on a courtesy bus runs Scuba courses. There isn’t ANYTHING in the way of nightlife outside the hotels so do not travel here if you are wanting to be entertained all night every night. But for a relaxing beach holiday with baking heat it’s perfect.

The Marriott hotel itself is very well maintained, and the staff I encountered were cheerful, friendly and went out of their way to accommodate your needs. Our room was large, with a fantastic sea view ( I think most rooms have a sea view) and 2 double beds. Sky TV, mini bar (stocked daily) and air conditioning also.
We were half board and had breakfast and dinner from a buffet. The food was fantastic, fresh, plenty of choice, and different 'themed' dishes each night. Lunch was also available from bars around the resort and we found this to be good value and very tasty.

Our tour operator Peltours was also excellent. As an example of their excellent service, when we missed booking for the scheduled Cairo tour, our rep organised an extra mini bus to take us especially - personal guide and everything.

I would definitely recommend this holiday.
" We stayed at the Taba Marriott early... "

We stayed at the Taba Marriott early March '05 and mainly only chose the destination for the reviews I’d read online about the nearby diving - i.e. not too challenging - as my wife was learning to dive there. However we were so pleased with the hotel we are going back in the next few weeks (May '05) to the same hotel and to dive with the same guys again too!

We found the hotel itself to be very well laid out and comfortable - especially liked the Cavern bar and spent maybe a few too many hours in there! ;o) Our room was lovely - we didn’t get a sea view but it was more than large enough and the bed was simply HUGE. I befriended a few of the staff there who informed me that all the 3 digit room numbers are larger rooms than the 4 digit ones by the way - so top tip!!

The restaurant (included in our half board price) was clean, the staff were friendly and efficient and on the whole the food was very good. It was never a lá Carte but the hotel presented an excellent choice considering the buffet arrangement every single night.

The pool at the Marriott is a little on the chilly side (well it was in March!) but is very large and absolutely lovely (contrary to some other reviews I’ve read elsewhere).

I’ve given the location of the hotel a 4 star rating and not 5 stars purely on the grounds that it’s a wee trek to get anywhere else i.e. sight seeing by the way. It’s not far into Israel and then onto Petra etc. etc. but apparently the border crossings are a nightmare!

We however only went for the diving and relaxing which we found perfect here.

Overall, my wife and I can really recommend the place. We had a lovely, lovely stay.
