More Traveller Reviews of Santa Barbara Golf & Ocean Club Hotel
loved it fantastic x
from stephie_06
I stayed here from the 15th to the 22nd of september. There was a smell of drains but it certainly didnt ruin the holiday. The apartment was fantastic as where all the facilities. The pool side bar is great the facilities were fantastic, the pool was clean, the resteraunt was lovely. bit expensive but you realy do get what yur paying for. We went here as a freebie off a member of my family but we loved it that much that we would be prepared to pay to go next year. The maids were in everyday to change towels and the beds. There is a stacker system in the room which i already knew about as my nan stays in santa barbera every year so we took some cd's. The weather was pretty cloudy but we still got a tan. For any of you that will be going here , here is a few tips on places to go and not to go. Do not go the aberdeen steak house it is filthy and the food was rancid. There is a place called san blas that you can walk to along the path at the front of the hotel there is several really nice places to eat like the plaza and loads of little shops open till late. There is a club called taboo and a place called shooters 2 they are both really good for a nite out with karaoke etc not to mention friends bar which is a lovely friendly bar( believe it or not) opposite the hotel if you cross the road and walk up a little bit on your left you will see an irish bar caled the wild geese its great in here to watch all the football matches etc and they have live solo artists and bands on everynite. Now for the best place to go convieneient cheap and close to the hotel. On the marina front there is a japanese bar tap en yaki and a place called la marina they do steaks ( and they are fantastic) paellas, lobster yu name it every resteraunt down the marin is fantastic so you can go anywhere down there and you will get a fantastic meal. We found a litle karaoke bar called the mephis bar hidden to your right in a shopping centre it was fantastic!!! we spent the 4th 5th 6th and last nite of our holidays in there great atmosphere. I loved this holiday and sobbed when we had to come home the place is a palace marble staircase down to the shop lifts to every floor. It was great and the best holiday i have ever been on. We are going back in july next year. Thanks for taking the time to read this review anyone going here im envious enjoy x x x
Rest and Relaxation !!

Having returned from the Santa Barbara last Friday I can agree with the more recent reviews. I have stayed on the Golf numerous times in other Sunterra properties. My companion has stayed at the Santa Barbara nine times before and has had very little to complain about. The resort is very well presented and maintained. The rooms are spacious and very clean. The upholstery is due for a change but overall satisfactory. The maids provided a wonderful service with little touches such as arranging nightwear into fans. The only problem I found is that air conditioning would improve the rooms as it can get quite uncomfortable at night to sleep. As for the bins/smells that have been reported i think it depends on which side of the building you are. I stayed in 805 and had no noise disturbance and/or foul smells to complain about it. The pool area is pleasant and some sunloungers in certain areas are tied to the floor but not all. I think that some are chained to ensure that walkways are kept clear. During Nov 2006 there is some work scheduled for the Pool bar and pool area. The reception area is nice and the staff were extremely helpful. Check in/out was quite quick and the bell boys were keen to help with the luggage. As for the resort there is quite a lot of building work being carried out on new Apartments etc. The coastal path has still not been completed in some places and therefore can be quite rough under foot (wear sensible shoes!). The Cafe at El Nautico on the front is quite a nice place to take in the view and enjoy a Santa Barbara. There are numerous restuarants around the area. The Harbour Lights(John and Jane) on the front does a quite mixed menu and all the meals are cooked from fresh ingredients. The portions are more than ample and the Sunday Roasts are exceptionally good value. Friends Bar on the Centro Commercial at San Blas is quite good for families and has a webcam. La Marina near the Santa Barbara has good fish cuisine and the breakfasts are good value. The Wild Geese Irish Bar has entertainment on most evenings and for football fanatics most UK games are televised through Sky. Verde on the square has very reaonably priced meals but the range is quite limited. There are some nice walks to be had in the area. The fishing village of Los Abrigos is a longer walk but well worth it for the views and the fish restuarants. Also it's a short walk over the Amarilla which is the older of the two resorts and the Aries Bar has a nice atmosphere although the building work that is being done in Amarilla spoils the views. Overall the resort is ideal if you want a relaxing break. Its probably a good idea to hire a car if you want to be more active.
Relaxing and enjoyable

Well to begin, we stayed in Tenerife 5 years ago with Sunterra at another resort and visited Santa Barbara for the day. At the time of booking could not remember everything about the resort apart from how idyllic it was and peaceful when we visited so decided to go ahead and book. I weren't looking for anything exciting and lively because I am pregnant and was just going on a break with my partner and parents. Leading upto our holiday I decided to check out any reviews that had been posted as afterall it had been 5 years and a lot can change. I read the review titled worst holiday ever and this totally put me and my family off the holiday but on return of my visit I have got to totally disagree with the comments in that review. Our holiday was just as I had imagined, great - peaceful and enjoyable. No smells of nasty drains, the bins getting emptied did not wake me with noise. The local construction work did not affect us as we did not hear a single sound. As for the accommodation itself, what a high standard. The linen was changed twice in a week, towels were changed daily and the apartment was always cleaned. The maids even did our dirty dishes that we had left one day (how can you complain of that). There were plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas available daily and they were not chained to the floor, could be moved about freely. The location of the resort was a bit out of the way with no beaches close by. Although, outside the hotel there was a little cliff, we walked down daily and got into the sea by the rocks, let me tell you.... this was an experience if you try it once you will go back daily. Swimming alongside little fish was good. Also a little bit further down there is another area of rocks and pebbles but this also has a black sand area, so is really easy to get in the sea. Plenty of choice with regards to the restaurants nearby. Would not complain about any of them as food, service and price was all great. Not much on the side of bars, but the wild geese pub was fun along with the onsite shows. To finish off I would like to warn all people not to go to the memphis bar which is set back off the sea front. This is the most expensive bar EVER! It cost 19 Euros for Southern comfort and lemonade, JD and coke and 2 ½ glasses of Spanish lager - RIP OFF. Definitely recommend Santa Barbara for those looking to relax and enjoy scenery. For those who don't mind travelling, Los Christianos in taxi was 10 euros, Las Americas 15 euros and San Blas 4 Euros so not that much for the odd day away.
Not great, not bad, just okay

I stayed here a couple of weeks through a work trip and thought it was okay, I cant say anything bad about the hotel, I didnt experience any or the drain smells talked about in other reviews and I felt there were plenty of sunbeds but I while the hotel didnt have anything terrible about it there wasnt one thing I thought Wow about. We stayed for 2 weeks and had to ask for clean towels everytime or we just didnt get them but the apartment was very spacious, the balcony was huge and the staff were friendly. The entertainment during the day in my opinion was rubbish and the evening stuff was a bit hit and miss, the Saturday night shows were fantastic but most of the others were pretty rubbish! The kids club for younger kids was not worth it and they only do a few things here and there anyway but the guys that run it are lovely and had a great rapport with all the children. I personally wouldnt book to go here again because I feel the location is a bit out of it and the beaches in walking distance (a long walk!) are some of the worst Ive seen but the hotel is friendly and clean so I certainly wouldnt say dont go. I think families with children 6 and up will enjoy this place, younger children will be bored, the childrens pool is far too deep for them and the beach no good and if youre a 20-30 year old like me, you wont find many others your age and I think youll end up travelling everyday to find a decent beach or a pool not full of noisy kids!
loved santa barbara

i have stayed in santa barbara twice and disagree with most of the reviews i have read here. one reviewer complained about the noise of children running about in the appartment above, that is not the resorts fault is it? also we had our beds and towels changed daily except for 1 day. everywhere is very clean and yes there is a smell of drains outside but it didnt ruin our holiday. the supermarket in the basement is quite cheap and has a good selection of food and drink. my son loved the pool which is also very clean and we loved the poolside bar especially at happy hour where the drinks are 2 for 1!! los christianos is 10 mins away by taxi and there are always taxis outside waiting to take you or u can jump on the bus which you can catch just up the road.there are a few restaurants within a few minutes walk, a fabulous italian were the food is great and 5 or 6 other restaurants behind it mexican, chinese etc.i will be returning next may.
Relaxing..........

We have just retured from The Santa Barbara and had a wonderful stay. We had booked a two bedroom apartment and on arrival we were given a one bedroom which we stayed in for two nights until a two bed was available. We then were given a huge two bed apartment overlooking the ocean and pool which was beautiful. The resort was relaxing we didn't hear any noise such as the bin's or building work. But in the evening in the first apartment we were in, there was a smell which wafted by depending on which way the wind was blowing, but it wasnt unbearable! Their was entertainment on every eveninig and was perfect for the whole family (we travelled with our six year old and a fourteen year old) In the evening we got a taxi to San Blas (which we realised was within walking distance as it cost only 2 euros) which was a beautiful new build shopping centre, and had at least 25 restaurant's and bar's and set between two square's.We also got a taxi to El Medano a little town on the coast which also had lovely restaurant's and a relaxing beach (Taxi cost about 12 euros ) On the last day of our holiday we used our hire car to take us up to the mountains and up the cable car to see the volcano, and although I was nervous in the cable car, it was worth it, the view was breathtaking, it was well worth the visit. All in all we would recommend The Santa Barbara, it was a relaxing resort, the complex beautiful, and a great base to go off and explore the island.
Avoid it - The worst holiday EVER!!
from acat2
We had booked it for 2 weeks - but moved out after 1 week. The bins are collected every day at 3am and the noise lasts for about 20 minutes - you can forget your sleep during this time. Then at 7am the noise from construction starts and does not let up. Then there is the smell of the sewers all day. There is no AC at the resort so you have a choice - put up with the terrible smell or put up with 35 degrees heat. The whole resort is very dated. We had a one bedroom apt for 4. There is very little room in the kitchen and we had to move the coffee table to the balcony so that we could walk. The pool is quite deep, so there are very few people in the middle of the pool and it gets very overcrowded at the edges. The pool area is very small for the number of guests. We saw someone get sick in the pool and that did not help. The area is very dirty around the pool with the number of guests and you will not find a free sunlounge. The resort boasts a gym but forgets to mention that there is no AC or open windows and impossible to do any realistic workout. The resort also forgets to mention that it is about 2km from the airport directly under the flight path. You can see the aeroplanes take off and land from the windows - great if you are a plane spotter. AVOID IT -
Where do I begin?? :(

We stayed for a promtional week in may 2006. and what an experience!! Sunterra had not previously advised us of their financial difficulties!! And the pressure we received to purchase a membership for nearly ten thousand pounds was a joke especially as they offered the couple next to us the same deal for a thousand pounds less!! Anyway..!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The accomodation is very dated, nice pool area mind you there arent many sun loungers as they are all chained to the floor! Couldnt even begin to imagine the rows over sun loungers in the high season! The room was okay, comfy beds but we had a one bed apt for four and they commented on the uncomfy sofa bed. there were children running up and down from 6am in the apt above, rubbish men woke us up most mornings at 3am emptying bins, building work starts about 7am!! So if you fancy a lie in forget it!! Had two sets of clean towels for a week, beds not made properly most days ended up doing myself. On the whole not a holiday really I would recommend to someone who doesnt really mind about there accom and prefers the resort to be very quiet, about 3 main bars (2 irish) and a dozen or so restaurants! It is a very quiet resort about 20 mins to Playa de las Americas costs 20 euros. had quite a nice rest but i will not be going back here again or tenerife again for that matter!!
Noisy!
from writersblock
First time here and hugely disappointed. Very noisy apartment overlooking service area and car park entrance, sea in distance. Very very noisy with vehicles unloading (especially laundry vans). A great deal of building work going on in Tenerife, especially around this area, woke to sound of drilling and banging at around 7am every morning! Apartments clean though and staff friendly but not interested in noise complaints! This area of Tenerife is 'Little Britain' - Calleta area much nicer.
love it!!! But quiet.

We are members of Sunterra and this is our second stay at the Santa Barbara. We have never had a problem with this hotel or the other one up the road The Royal Tenerife Country Club. There is a big difference in rooms though. If you can request room 709 which is a 2 bedroom 3 bathroomed beauty with a huge balcony. Its always been very very clean and the maids are really nice. We were in room 708 recently and its only half the size of next door. Still big though. If you have kids there is entertainment on all day other than that there is just the pool. I wouldn't rate the foot at the pool or hotel resturant that highly. The shop on site is not bad priced wine is mega cheap!! The area is really quite although there are a few pubs and resturants 5 mins walk away including the Wild Geese pub for the football. It is 4 euros in a taxi to San Blas which is a square with loads of resturants. A must try would be Gullivers Grillhouse resturant which is out of this world. The chinese buffet next door is mega cheap. Kays bar for the football. Its 20 euros in a taxi to Las Americas and 14 or 15 euros in a taxi to the airport. The buses are ok and the bus stop is only a few minutes walk away. We have never been in the summer we were recently there in March 2006 and the weather was great. Plenty of sunbeds although they are chained to the ground in pairs. There is sometimes a bad rotten egg smell depending on the wind direction. There is some kind of water plant next door!! you get used to it!!

We have just returned from a weeks holiday and it was the best so far! All the staff were polite and helpful, the 2 bed apartment was very spacious with a huge balcony, spotless too. Our children aged 3 and 8 loved the pool but thoroughly enjoyed the children's animation... more
