Although the weather was fine and...

Jan 2008, Mrs A Gray

Although the weather was fine and Monte Gordo remains a fabulous destination for a winter break, the hotel was very disappointing; standards have dropped considerably from our last visit four years ago. The room was extremely below standard for it's 4* status, we had booked a junior suite, which consisted of an extra sofa in the room.
Although the floors were swept daily, a wipe with a cloth proved them to be absolutely filthy. The bedroom landings were not vacuumed the entire time we were there, as was evident from the chipped paint from the skirting board on the carpet outside our room. The landing windows were so dirty it was almost impossible to see the view of the beach and one of the lifts remained out of order for the entire 8 days we were there, albeit with no sign to that effect.
It took 3 days of going to reception before the mini bar was filled, the bathroom towels were actually frayed and tired, and the toiletries were sadly lacking. There was no more satellite TV so our viewing consisted of the choice of watching the same old news on either CNN, BBC World Service or Sky.
The food was pitiful, overcooked and bland; furthermore there was beer on tap for the men, yet no wine, bottled water being the only alternative being offered. The staff were overall quite efficient but extremely surly, almost to the point of rudeness - it was hard to believe we were paying guests! We did not meet the manager until he served us in the bar on the 3rd day, and, rather than apologise and greet us properly, he questioned our residency and my partner had to go to the room with proof before we were allowed to sign for our bar bill. Hardly the welcome one would have expected.
When we eventually went back in on New Year's Eve there were probably only a dozen people in there, champagne was on the bar but this was promptly put away after midnight, one can only assume it had to be paid for; on our previous visit the place was teeming, and free drinks and canapés were on offer all evening. In fact it was so bad that even the clocks weren't synchronised, there was no countdown and we had to make do with singing Auld Lang Syne with complete strangers sitting on the next table. At quarter past 12 a maintenance man appeared to promptly cover the place with 'No Smoking' signs, which seemed to epitomise the attitude of the place.
The sad withered IBEROTEL flag flying outside with building summed the place up very well - we shall not be visiting this hotel again.

I visited this hotel in April 2006...

Jun 2006, Ms S Hopkins

I visited this hotel in April 2006 with my partner and some of his family. There were 6 of us in total aged between 23 and 70 something!
The hotel itself is beautiful. Excellent decoration, beautiful views and good location. Unfortunately, that’s the only good thing about it!
We found the staff to be terribly rude. Only one male waiter found the time to give us a smile and say hello during the whole week.
The apartments were a good size and cleaned everyday, however, the cleaners did not appear before 4pm! By this time, we were all back in our rooms having showers etc to get ready for the evening! On one occasion we had decided to have a nap so put the "do not disturb! sign on the door, only to be woken half an hour later by the insistent knocking of the cleaner, holding the sign in her hand asking "do you want your room cleaned"?! go figure!
We found the whole dining experience to be somewhat disastrous! The food was poor, and very repetitive! Everyday was fish and a meat (often undistinguishable) in a brown- coloured sauce! The breakfast was very much geared towards the German and Dutch guests, ham and cheese, croissants and eggs etc etc. To make it worse, the dining room was like a free-for all! People barging all over the place, no organisation, a battle for seats and no guidance from the staff.
We also found there was a lot of hidden charges in the hotel. For example, to swim in the indoor pool you must purchase a hat at 4 euros. To use the Jacuzzi you should also purchase slippers at 4euros (although we decided not to bother!). Also, a charge of 4euros was added to any room service ordered! This made a 2 euro cup of (foul) tea cost 6 euros!
All in all, we found it to be very poor. Definitely wouldn’t go back! Probably will never go back to Portugal if all the people are this unfriendly!

Resort very pleasant, beach absolutely beautiful and clean. Hotel clean and well maintained, but not very friendly. Staff like robots. Self service restaurant very strange, hot food very poor, but plenty of salads and fruit. Drink prices more expensive than the local bars and a lot smaller. Entertainment in the evening only for children at this time
of year.
Overall we had a good holiday, because weather was lovely, but I felt hotel had a lot to put right. I have found in the past the Portuguese to be very friendly, and I feel
sure the staff at the hotel would have been as well, if they had time to stop and chat for a minute, they were run off there feet which suggests they were on minimum staff.
Would not go to this hotel again, however Portugal still beautiful and will definitely return.

Have just returned from holidaying...

Oct 2005, Mrs P Fisher

Have just returned from holidaying with 82 year old mother. Excellent holiday. Hotel clean, spacious (don’t know what it would be like if it was full!). Food excellent (mother worried about buffet service but by end of holiday she was won over!).
Would have preferred tea and coffee making facilities in room to mini bar. Huge bathroom - super shower. Large balcony with fantastic view of sea. Games room not open (wanted to play snooker) - discovered late on in holiday that we should have gone to reception and they would have opened up for us. Some trips not running - winter season apparently starts in November.
Town of Monte Gordo small, unspoilt. Plenty of cafes and bars. One casino so night life quite quiet. Next to pine woods and sand dunes - beautiful! Would definitely go again (no trouble with security - used safety deposit box for valuables) - felt safe at all times.

Feb 2005, Not Specified

Just returned from a week in the Iberohotel on a B&B basis with a group golf holiday. It was all that I expected apart from no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms.
Hotel was very clean, well maintained, pool and gym great (didn’t expect to have to pay for gym, sauna or Jacuzzi though!)
Breakfast strange to say the least - hot eggs, warm bacon and stone cold baked beans!!! Plenty of ham, cheese etc. though.
Monte Gordo itself was OK, quite a few bars and restaurants open, and Revue at the Casino was good!
Several good golf courses within a 20 minute drive will definitely be returning next year.

My husband and I vacationed at the...

Mar 2003, Mrs M Bruss

My husband and I vacationed at the Iberotel in Monte Gordo during March 2003. I am submitting this review over a year later, as we gave the Iberotel plenty of time to respond to our difficulties at the hotel.
While staying at the hotel, we took a walk on the beach across from the property. During this outing, our hotel room was burglarised. We returned to find the door to our room smashed open - all of our valuables were stolen. This included all of our jewellery, plane tickets, some articles of clothing, a cell phone, two cameras (with all equipment and film), some souvenirs, and a travel bag. In addition, my husband’s suitcase was smashed open - unnecessary, since it was unlocked! Even toiletries from the bathroom were taken!
We filed a police report with local authorities, sensing a very indifferent attitude. The hotel management waived our hotel bill, which amounted to approximately $300. This was no where close to the amount of our estimated losses. They said they would file a claim with their insurance company, and would be in touch.
Since this experience, we learned that the Vasco Da Gamma Hotel across the street had been burglarised six times, and the Iberotel was burglarised again. The hotel has not responded further to our inquiries, and we have received no further compensation. We contacted the Portugal department of tourism, and never received the courtesy of a reply.
What kind of a place is this? At the end of our vacation, we purchased new airline tickets, and were glad to return home to the safety of our own environment.
Please advise travellers to stay away from this area, and the Iberotel in particular - it is dangerous, and the hotel did not respond properly to our difficulty. Is this anyway to promote tourism?
