We have just returned from a weeks stay at the Blue Aegean. We trawled through many review websites like this one before we booked and found mainly positive reviews. We just wanted to provide you with our honest opinion of the hotel and surrounding resort. Basically, we... more

I totally disagree with the previous reviewer. I was at the Blue Aegean when the thunderstorm hit & I was impressed at how quickly afterwards the whole area was cleaned (even down to the pathways at the back where our apartment entrance was). Manolis and his team were all... more

We have only recently returned from Gouves and the Blue Aegean and fell that a recent, honest and constructive review must be added here. We are a family (with 2 year old child)that are not highly critical, generally - we appreciate our holidays and know we are lucky to be... more

The apartments are comfortable and tidy. Could have done with a few more essentials ie. dishes/cooking utensils and iron. The grass could have been cut more than once in the 2 weeks we were there to keep the ground looking nicer. We found the Island Bar to be the best,... more

Blue Aegean mania!!
As a young couple we stayed at the Blue Aegan for a week in summer 2007. We had a small villa, which was very clean and spacious and had a balcony that was perfect for breakfast. The Blue Aegean is literally 30m from the beaches, supermarkets and restaurants of Kato Gouves. The beaches are quite small but it is not a problem, they are beautiful and the sea is incredibly clear. The mini supermarkets are very extensive and reasonably priced, and the restaurants give excellent value for money - you can normally get fantastic souvlaki, gyros or greek salads for under 7 euros. Blue Aegean seems to be quite family based but it was not a problem at all for us. They put on special nights each week, of which for us the highlight was definitely Pizza Mania. All you can eat pizza and greek salad, with the pizza being cooked right in front of you. It was indeed mania, but of the very delicious indeed kind. We had a very sunny, enjoyable and relaxed time which was exactly what we wanted. We would give the Blue Aegean a definite two thumbs up, and highly recommend it to others.
Highly recommended for families
This is an excellent hotel run by Manilos and Sue. Manilos is a reasonably quiet manored man but is always in the background willing to help and speak to his guests. This was our first time here (myself, my fiance and 5 yr old daughter) and it appears many people go year after year. Our daughter loved it and found it easy to make friends with other children as it is such a small complex. She went to kids club which was run by the hotel due to lack of Thomas cook kids staying at the time. The entertainment was also good and family orientated. I can whole heartedly recommend this hotel if you are a family with younger children. Our room was big enough for the 3 of us with a double bedroom and the sofa set up as a bed for our child. The kitchen has only got 2 hobs 1 small, 1 large and a microwave which makes cooking a decent size meal quite difficult but we tended to eat a snack during the day in our room and go out for dinner. Fot the 3 of us it cost us approximately €30. It also appears that most people book direct with the hotel and save quite a lot of money in doing so. The service of the food at the hotel varied but the specials were always very good. As for the resort of Gouves there isn't much to see. One main shopping street but I must say that we didn't have a bad meal wherever we ate!! I need to mention Demetrius (Demetri) who works behind the bar every night, It was a pleasure to talk to you! Also Aurel who also works every day for about 19 hours a day. This guy is from Romania originally and has lived in Crete for 11 years now. I have never known anyone to work so hard in all my life. Keep practicing your English Aurel and take a real holiday!!!
I really enjoyed my stay!
Just got back from a lovely 2 week stay at the Blue Aegean. The location is great and the staff are very accommodating. We had a ground floor apartment that was very spacious and had everything we needed. Food was not always great at the aparthotel but the special nights were good and the children loved the Greek dancing night and the magician. (I particularly enjoyed dancing on the table with the nice looking male greek dancer!!!) We opted for the meal deal where you can have 7 breakfasts and 7 lunches or dinners over the period of your stay. This gave us more flexibility as we could choose when to eat out or to stay in and enjoy the entertainment. There are some toys and colouring books available in the restaurant which is great for entertaining the children whilst you finish your dinner. The pool area is lovely, our little girl is almost 3 and she had the greatest time and didn't want to come home. The only down side was the ants...they were everywhere in our apartment and although staff tried to block up the hole where they were getting in, they still managed to get into food cupboards etc. All in all I had a great time with my family and would recommend it to families with small children and I would consider returning for another holiday at the Blue Aegean.
relaxing
July 2007. just got back from blue Aegean , fantastic, excellent, relaxing, pleasent, pleasant staff ,fantastic location , if you want to get away from it all,for a week this is the place, you are 50mtrs away from 2 beautiful beaches, there is good places to eat ,if your self catering , the little snack bars located right on the beach are excellent for quick snacks and drinks. but i recommend the little tavernes ,shops etc, etc, hidden in the backstreets of the the village, the food was out of this world, we came across a place called mythos,it was a little tavernas cooking traditional Greek cuisine, and of course of the odd bit of everything else , overall great holiday ,7 days max, if you are a couple. but with kids excellent hotel, great staff....... big 10/10..... steve / lin ,, leicester ,
One of the best
We had a 2-week business meeting in Heraklion and also at the Hellenic Center for Marine Research. One option was to stay for 2 weeks in a 4 star hotel in Heraklion. The other option was to book accomodation outside Heraklion. We went for the second option; we booked a villa and a bungalow at Blue Aegean. We were just outside the tourist season, and were therefore able to negotiate a nice price. Including the two daily taxis, we were still 50% cheaper than booking two rooms in a 4 star hotel in noisy and hot Heraklion. So the Blue Aegean hotel. We do a lot of international travel.....and have seen lots of hotels and appartments. This one is certainly in our top 5. First of all...it is quiet and clean. If, during the tourist season, you don't like the noise of children playing in the swimming pool, ask for a villa/apartment outside the complex. No noise at all. If you have young children, then it is an excellent place to stay. The families with small children that arrived during the second week of our stay (start of the tourist season) seem to be very happy. All the little ones were playing with each other. It seems a nice place for families with young children. No 18-30 year olds at all. In fact, this part of Gouves is not for the 18-30 year olds. They are 10 kilometers further East. So..no drunk teenagers. Manolis, one of the owners, is a nice guy. No pushy behaviour. Ask him to arrange a taxi, or booka car. It is certainly cheaper than doing it yourself. He saved us 10 Euro per day on the taxi. I read the other reviews. Yes...kitchen equipment is a bit limited. But ask, and they will arrange. That seems to be a golden rule in Greece. Clean, quiet, good, and relatively cheap (at least our deal). Is everything rosy? Well.....8 Euros for using a washing machine is steep. But then....Manolis gave us three free beers, and 2 free coffees.....so..we can't complain. The other thing that is little annoying is the internet facilities. At first site, 5 computers with fast internet access looks great. But the system reboots every now and then...meaning you have to type your long email all over again. But then...complain and Manolis gives you a new free 2-hour internet card. The price of internet access is reasonable as well. The only annoying thing is that you cannot connect your laptop. But I am sure that if you say: I only come if you provide wireless internet access, they will arrange it. But then....you must be a sad person if you take your laptop with you during a holliday! It seems that the internet was merely setup to entertain the young ones, like all the other facilities at this place. One of the other reviews complained about hot water. Hot water comes from a tank on top of the roof, which is heated by solar panels. As you can guess, if you finish the hot water in the evening, there is no hot water at 07.30 next morning. But then...a little bit of organisation can avoid problems. This is obviously only an issue for sad business folks like us, who have to get up at 07.30 (and if one person finishes all the hot water in the evening).....the sun starts to heat up the water already from 08.00 onwards, so hot water is back to normal at 09.00. So..for holliday folks, this is not an issue at all. There is hot water for at least a shower of 30 minutes! There are about 10 supermarkets in the area...but prices are a bit steep. Get food from the market in Heraklion at a fraction of the price!! We paid 3 Euros for a kilo of fantastic fish on the market in Heraklion. So..summarising...one of the better places we have seen. If we have another business meeting, we will book the same opalce...provided Manolis arranges wireless internet. Great place for families with young children. They won several prices. I tend to put only negative reviews on TripAdvisor, but a good place also deserves a review. This one is good. Alain
Great
We stayed here July 2005. It was our first experience on this type of holiday. Our apartment was on the ground floor and faced the pool. The apartment had a terrace overlooking the pool ( three steps away) and was large enough for a table, chairs and all the lilos etc. the apartment was a bit small for five but we did not mind. If the door was open the kitchenette looked over the pool. The apartment was cleaned regularly. The air conditioning was good. Over looking the pool was abar with reasonable restaurant. We lunched here almost every day and allways had a few drinks in the evening even if we did not meet. The bar is very good with a great bar man. All the satff are very friendly and go out of their way to help. It is privately owned with the owners on site all the time and get to know all the visitors. The beach is about 50 meters down thr road ( which is scruffy) and the beach is not great but 'OK'. The horel has a gym - little used by visitors but well equiped and useful. Overall we though this was agreat holiday and would recomend it.
Love lt place
We spent two weeks at the Blue Aegean it is very well situated, close to two small beaches, it is extremely clean and well maintained Sue and her family will do anything they possibly can to help, the evening entertainment was ok but if you want it livelier its only a 10 minute walk into Gouves main town, There ia a resteraunt on the corner called Illios its a must the food and the service is fantastic but if you want some good old fashioned english cooking you must go to DMs in the town Sunday roast and apple crumble to die for. We would definitely go back.
Lovely people- lovely place
We first visited the Blue Aegean in 2002 and had such a wonderful time we returned in 2003. Considering our age range spanned from 4yrs old to 75yrs old, and we all enjoyed ourselves tremendously, we cannot find fault with this accommodation. The management and staff could not do enough for us and each became friends which we all hold dear to our hearts. Unfortunately last year we were unable to return but gladly this year we are booked up again for a long awaited return. Andreas the manager is quite flambouyant which we think is part of the hoilday entertainment. We would like people who haven't seen it in him, to know that he is a very considerate, helpful and kind man.
Never Again !
Stayed in this hotel June 2004 - World Cup final week ! Apartments clean and spacious but limited cooking utensils so having to eat out evenings. Apartments overlooking the pool. Pool OK but local Greek swimming lessons take up half of the pool in late afternoons Monday - Friday. If you are looking for a quiet relaxing family holiday these apartments are not for you. Manager VERY loud and demanding, you join in with all activities or ELSE - this spoilt a nice family holiday. Resort of Gouves very limited and very quiet. Beach poor, sea can be very rough. We witnessed the beach lifeguard save a young lads life whilst we was there due to the rough sea. Agree with other reports about ear infections in the Apartments and D & S outbreaks. No common cause but be aware !
Glad we didn't!
We didn't actually stay at this hotel, we just turned up for a drink there one afternoon. The place itself was absolutely pristine, very clean and tidy. However, the apartments were right by the pool and so were VERY noisy. The music from the pool bar was VERY loud and what could only have been the manager was singing at the top of his voice and turning the mic. and the music right up. If you want a quiet getaway, this is not the place!!! It is unfortunate as the place itself was quite nice albeit a bit on top of each other. I can imagine the 18-30 crowd here in August!
