Good hotel, not so good location!

We have just returned from a weeks stay at the Blue Aegean. We trawled through many review websites like this one before we booked and found mainly positive reviews. We just wanted to provide you with our honest opinion of the hotel and surrounding resort.
Basically, we could not fault the hotel. The staff are all very friendly (especially Wendy on reception & the owner Manolis) and the accommodation was adequate. We stayed in a 1 bed apt, and had ample room. Bring extra coathangers with you, we only had 3 for the whole family, but were given more straight away as soon as we asked reception.
The hotel put on occasional entertainment which you have to pay extra for, but includes food. However, as it was very quiet when we stayed there, it was cancelled which was a real shame as it was half-term week and we thought it would be busier. The pool is lovely, cold though, but refreshing as the weather was very warm whislt we were there. There is a small toddler pool too.
There is a kids club, which again, costs you extra (around 4euros per child for 3-4 hrs) Ours didn't go as we didn't really find out about it until the end of our stay which was a shame. We spent our days doing our own thing.
About the area. The hotel is literally 2 mins from the local supermarket (which is cheaper than the one just around the corner) and then a little further is one of the beaches. It is quite small but is sandy. Only thing is it is covered with sunbeds which cost around 6euros for the day. Another small beach just further along the road on the right hand side. The main beach is on the way into the main resort which is much larger and spacious. Again, lots of sunbeds to pay for, unless you can find a spot to lay a towel.
Onto Gouves, itself. There are a few restaurants within walking distance from the Blue Aegean (try the Island restuarant just across the road from the hotel, very friendly and a lovely setting, with a little kiddies play area alongside. We ate there 3 times. Also, try Oasis, which we found on our last night, typical. Turn left as you come out of the hotel, follow the road uphill, then continue turning left instead of heading for the main road, there are about 7-8 little restaurants hidden away. The owner of oasis is lovely, the food is fab too. Again a little play area for the kids - as long as they're happy, we are!
The reps tried to sell us their excursions. We did book the Greek night out in Anopolis which I have to say was absolutely fantastic. The bus takes you up into the mountains into a huge venue where you can eat & drink as much as you like whilst watching the brilliant show and even join in the dancing. This was the highlight of our holiday. Food is typically greek, kids not too keen though, so may be worth feeding them before you go!
Another trip the reps advertise is to the local waterpark. It would have cost us 90 euros for the 4 of us and we just thought it was too steep. Our kids are 9 and 6 and aren't really into the big rides/slides, so instead we opted to jump onto the local bus (from the top of the road - cost us about 4 eruos for the 4 of us) and went to Star Beach waterpark in Hersonissos. It is free to go in, and we went to the smaller kiddies area furthest along to the right which has smaller slides and fun fountains/lazy river etc. We paid only 10-11 euros for 2 sunbeds & a brolly and that was it! The ticket entitled us to move anywhere else in the park (even onto the beach) and we could use any sunbed within the complex! Worth noting, you are NOT allowed to bring your own food & drink into the complex, we had our bags searched on the way in, thankfully we hadn't anything, but noticed some were being turned away. All in all, we felt we had a real bargain at Star Beach, we even returned 2 days later!
So, would we go back? I don't think so. Although we enjoyed our holiday, we felt the area of Gouves was lacking in atmosphere. It needs a bit of a tidy up compared to neighbouring resorts. Don't be put off though, we did enjoy ourselves, the downside was the distance from the hotel to the main resort. The bus stop is about 15 mins away, turn left out of hotel, keep going to the main road, which you have to cross over to get to Hersonissos, Stalis, Malia, Aghios Nicholaos. As for taxis, we didn't see one, but I believe the hotel and any supermarket are willing to order you one, but it will cost you approx 8 euros to take you anywhere in Gouves, whether its 50 yards or 5000 yards!

I totally disagree with the previous reviewer. I was at the Blue Aegean when the thunderstorm hit & I was impressed at how quickly afterwards the whole area was cleaned (even down to the pathways at the back where our apartment entrance was). Manolis and his team were all lovely people who couldn't do enough to help and were brilliant about allowing us a late check out even though the hotel was to be filled again during the night. I have only given a 9 out of 10 as I think Gouves itself needs a good tidy up. Hopefully, when the economic climate gets better, this will happen, but if it doesn't then Gouves will lose out to other areas which are better cared for.
Everyone in the shops and restaurants were very friendly and the food was some of the best I have ever had in Greece after many years of visits.
I loved the Blue Aegean which is just the right size and was very lovely to look at with the buildings arranged around the pool and the bar overlooking the lot. The reception area was great for waiting for late planes with comfortable seating and the bar & resturant (only went to the pizza night) were very friendly.
The beach is very close (go to the one a bit further along on the right) and was tidied every morning (the bottles, cigarette ends, etc. are only there because tourist are too lazy to use the bins provided by every sun umbrella and at the back of the beach).
Overall, a lovely holiday so come on Gouves - get tidied up to make it perfect.

We have only recently returned from Gouves and the Blue Aegean and fell that a recent, honest and constructive review must be added here. We are a family (with 2 year old child)that are not highly critical, generally - we appreciate our holidays and know we are lucky to be able to have them especially in the current climate - but certain things must be said!
Manolis was very kind to us that is without doubt - we needed his help a few times! However, his hotel leaves something to be desired. Apart from the lovely two pools, he needs to seriously improve various areas. The rooms need modernising and updating, the internal decor is drab and dreary, the shower curtains are tatty and dirty, the standard of utensils is poor, the sofas were dirty/difficult to clean. The playground was diabolical...turf torn and dirty, slide filthy, the toy cars disgusting inside, old, rusty swings...the whole place just wasn't cleaned whilst we were there and we had an awful thunderstorm one day...rainwater and dirt still in slide days afterwards...
The bar/restaurant area appeared like a run down mobile cafe, plain and tatty tables/
linen/crockery,lack of imagination with menu...the two meals we had were distinctly average (can't understand the fuss about the pizzas! Very ordinary)...the gift shop was on its last legs....very little in there and didn't once see anyone serving there either...the mini-market was closed down...the facilties in the downstairs room for the "kids club" were very poor with the place needs a serious lick of paint/enthusiasm.
Gouves, as has been said, is very lacking in atmosphere (told by many Greeks due to the credit crunch)...the whole area is just so sad and jaded...some parts being quite derelict and crumbling beneath your feet, it seemed...a sandy beach nearby where we went one day was absolutely disgusting...cigarette ends all over, empty bottles of water lying about...
Sorry to be so negative and depressing but this is realistic...positives for us were that we enjoyed our booked trips to Knossos/Lassithi, Spinalonga island/Agios Niklaous and our own trip to Heraklion (got the bus!) - trips NOT booked via Thomas Cook either - way too expensive! Mike Tours were excellent. The Island Restaurant staff were superb and the Greek night there was brilliant! We ventured out to Hersonnissos too...great place...and the Aquarium and Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition both worth it...
Conclusion: We won't be returning to Crete as much prefer other Greek islands we have visited...I would recommend Rhodes and Lindos!

I would highly recommend this place if you ar looking for a totally relaxing holiday with wonderful weather and excellent accommodation. The owner Manolis will bend over backward to help your stay at the Blue Aegean be one to remember, and all the staff are very helpful and very friendly. Nothing is too much trouble.
I have stayed here 3 times now and I will be staying again next year. I just love it. There are lots of lovely restaurants very near to the Blue Aegean and the beach is just a stones throw away too. What more could you ask for.

  • Advice: Quiet, peaceful and beautiful
  • Activities: Too many lovely restaurants to choose from

The apartments are comfortable and tidy. Could have done with a few more essentials ie. dishes/cooking utensils and iron. The grass could have been cut more than once in the 2 weeks we were there to keep the ground looking nicer.
We found the Island Bar to be the best, happiest and friendliest place to visit which is just a stones throw from the apartment. Everyone in Kato Gouves is so friendly but The Island is exceptional.

A quiet location, very realxing family holiday. The hotel staff can not do enough for you to make your stay a pleasant one.my husband even requested an apple pie for desert as a joke but it was made fresh for him, nothing was too much trouble.
it was my sons birthday while away and the staff made it very special and even provided a lovely birthday cake, banners etc.
The resort itself is very quiet and was suffering from our current economic climate, but I enjoy having as much space as I want on the beach and the kids really didnt miss pedlos, they were quite happy with a net and bucket trying to catch fish!!
The shopping area is quite a walk so if you have little legs with you a buggy is a must. But again I found it a pleasnt walk along the rugged coastline, infact we even walked the 5KM to the aquarium which was nice as bars are dotted all the way along so drink and food stops were never a problem.
the one bedroom apartment was huge and confortably housed my family of five including toddler and teen.claenliness was excellent and the facilities met our needs.
The pool was lovely and was clened religiously every day and unlike other hotels etc I have stayed in was not over chlorinated.Couldnt fault our appartment, straight out onto the verranda which was straight out onto the pool area.excellent relaxing break

Having already visited this complex 5 years ago we always knew that we would return. We were concerned before departure having read some reveiws on websites like this one. I honestly do not understand what some people want from a holiday! This was one of the best two weeks we have had anywhere and was even better than last time. The complex is small and friendly, very safe for children and immaculate in terms of being clean & tidy. The staff are always helpful, friendly and accomodating. The pool area is a wonderful place to stay and relax or there are two beaches within a short walking distance. The food in the hotel is excellent and we can thoroughly reccomend the meal deal offer as the food is very varied and good value. The Pizza nights are a must! The Water Park is also a very good day out with fantastic views. You can usually get an idea of how good a place is by how many people return, nearly everyone staying there said they would be back,we certainly will!!!!

August 2008 was our first visit to the Blue Aegean,my family including 2 children ages 5 and 10 had one of one of the best holidays ever.We were told about the Blue Aegean by family members who have been there 6 times and we were not dissapointed,we are booked to go again in august 2009.The complex is quite small so watching young children is easy .
Everything is kept immaculate, the appartments are spacious and very well equipt with everything you need. The restaurant serves lovely food at good prices. At night there are some brilliant shows which should not be missed ,food is included in the price. Our kids cant wait to go back they had such a great time ,there was loads of things to do and they both made many friends. The owner and his staff made us feel very welcome and nothing is to much trouble for them.
All in all a brilliant holiday .

Have just returned from the Blue Aegean for the second time and can honestly say it is absolutely fantastic. It is immaculately clean, all the staff are very friendly and bend over backwards to help you. The owner will do anything for you so that you enjoy your stay there. The apartments are cleaned daily as is the pool area. The atmosphere is is just so chilled and relaxed. I have 2 children aged 8 and 4 and they love it, it is safe for them and there is allsorts of things for them to do both day and night. I cannot wait to go back again and would recommend it to anyone wanting a nice relaxing holiday and if you have kids it is ideal.
Thanks again to all of you at The Blue Aegean

Best holiday ever

My family and I visited Blue Aegean in August 2008 and we will return this year again for 3 weeks. The kids loved every minute of it making new friends and enjoying the pool at the apartments and the beach just down the road. The apartment was fantastic with a microwave, toaster and kettle with very comfortable beds and tv with BBC news and BBC Prime. The staff were really friendly and always on hand to give advise or just sit for a chat. There were a lot of repeat visitors there and they made us feel very welcome and I can see why they return every year.Pizza night was amazing with the pizzas cooked right in front of you and so many to choose from. We thouroughly enjoyed the Magic show and Karaoke night. It's the perfect place for a family holiday and Gouves is still a safe destination for young kids. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the little shop on site sold all the basics you need including English newspapers. There is also an internet corner which the kids loved. We are counting the days to our return.

My family spent 2 wonderful weeks at Blue Aegean last year and we have booked to go again for 3 weeks this summer. It was the perfect place for a family holiday. The children loved the pool and the friends they made. They keep in touch and will be there at the same time as us. The apartment was just right for us with a microwave, kettle and toaster and electric cooking rings. The beds were comfortable and the balcony overlooked the pool. We had some great meals in the restaurant served by a lovely waiter Stelios. The magic show was fun and the karaoke was even better. The pizza night was great value with the pizzas made in front of you. There is a big television screen in the bar and the reception area and the men loved watching the football there. It's about 30 metres from a good beach and there is a little shop on the complex which sells the basics. We were looked after by all the staff and the owner and made to feel like friends rather then customers. We can't wait to get back and the kids are counting the days.
