best holiday for families
10 / 10
Jun 2009, Rachel.windley

we have stayed at the Blue agean many times we are going back again Aug 09 for the 5th Time. It is a fantastic place to go for a relaxed , safe and fun holiday with children of all ages. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Food in the restaurant is exceptional especially on Greek night. The nights with entertainment arranged are a must for all the family. We have been happy to go year after year to this. Children always make good friends around the pool as it is enclosed and many guests go from year to year so faces are familiar.

Just wanted people to know we are a family with a small boy,and are coming out in June.We have stayed at the Blue Aegean before and never had any problems. Our son loves coming here, the children always get on with each other, and everyone we speak to loves it,there is Karaoke on a sunday night and lots of people sing mostly children, greek night with a buffet, and a magic show which is good clean fun.I guess the people who wrote bad reports did,nt realise most people who come here just want to unwind and have a holiday where there kids are safe, and thats why a lot of holiday makers just keep returning year after year, maybe theyshould think of hiring a villa, were the only entertainment they get is there own.We have met some lovely families over the years, and they always say the Blue Aegean is the best.

We have been coming to the Blue for 6 years now,and try to get 2 times in the year,The place is brilliant for children,is very safe and the parents can really relax.Manolis and all the staff are very friendly and make you feel like old friends,or long lost relatives. The apartments are spotless and cleaned every day,the pool get,s cleaned and tested every morning before 8 o clock,The hotel has a greek night which i would recommend, along with this you get a greek buffet and it,s not expensive for what you get.Pizza night is on wed night,it is to die for.Manolis makes most of the pizza,s himself,in fact he does a carry out service for the local hotels in the area. And is in great demand.Nothing is to much hassle at the Blue Aegean, people should remember when coming to crete that this is greece and everything is in greek time, nothing is hurried. The children spend a lot of the time in the internet corner or playing pool or table tennis.Round the pool most people join in the games like volleyball or water football, hand ball. There is a lot of returning guest,s every year that,s maybe why it,s so good new guest,s feel comfortable straight away, there is always someone to advice them about the area and excursion,s.The Blue aegean has won The Marquiss of excellence quite a few times Travel companies don,t just give them to any one. They deserve them Try Gouves town and visit O Conners Say hi to George and Theo very good company. The Aquarium is a good place for children,A lot of bad reveiws last year about the Blue Aegean,i can only think someone has it in for the guy,s in Gouves.looking forward to seeing everyone very soon. Eileen Kane.

  • Advice: Gouves has started to develop quickly every year there is something else been built, not for 18-30s
  • Activities: Blue aegean Da Vinci code,Mylos, Agia Marina festival, and seeing the village of Astritsis.

Horrible Place

Dec 2008, krome108

I spent two weeks in this hellhole with my girlfriend back in September and I have to say it was one of the worst holiday experiences ever. We feel like we were totally conned and just stuck it out as we had payed and there was nothing else we could do.
Firstly the picture and description of the place is totally innacurate. The complex is much smaller in reality then the picture and description would have you believe. Its just a tiny pool. The accomodation is dirty and shabby, no way near four stars.
The staff are rude, unhelpful, especially the owner and his son. You get a strong feeling that they don't give a damn about you. There is constant blaring music from the bar and this goes on until late. We had to pay extra for air con so we could keep the windows shut to block out the noise.
To top it all of Gouves is dull. There is nothing there, dry washed out landscape with lots of debris from construction all around. Basically its just Restaurans and beaches, nothing else, and the restaurants are not traditional Greek, they all just sell english cafe like food, egg n chips etc. The only thing nice is the sea water, it is very clear.

  • Advice: Gouves is very dull.

Awful, our holiday from hell!

Dec 2008, bodybuildinggirly

We had a really bad experience with Blue Aegean and would not recommend it to anyone!
We stayed in August 2008 with our three children (aged 8, 6 and 2). We booked a year in advance and requested a pool view, but when we got there we were stuck right out of the way with a view that looked over the back of a shop. If we leaned right over the balcony we could just about make out a small corner of the pool. The apartment was also upstairs, which was not much fun with a buggy every day! This was however, the least of our concerns.
The apartment itself was very shabby (massive chips in furniture) and small, which I was disappointed with. We arrived at about 2am only to find that the fridge had defrosted all over the floor - great fun with kids in the middle of the night!
We joked it was like Fawlty Towers (yes, it was that bad!), we had door handles falling off (the external door), the waste pipe on the washbasin flying off and soaking my husband (this took a day and a half to fix!), there was a full day where we were not allowed to use the pool due to a chemical mix up or something.
There was also a lot of noise at night from the bar and from the hotel next door as well - we were seriously unlucky with the position of our apartment as we got noise from both! Two lots of blaring music and then drunken shouting, etc afterwards going on till 2/3am most nights! Not very family friendly! The air con charges are really expensive as well (around 67 euros a week).
Staff also moved our towels off our sun loungers whilst we were in our apartment for 1/2 hour eating even though there were plenty empty ones around the pool. It was only the self catering guests who's towels were moved though - leaving us feeling like we were second class guests!
The final straw for me was when I found fleas in our bed. I only discovered these on the 10th day of our stay when one jumped on my 2 year olds face as he lay on the bed. When I complained to the owners they would not believe they were fleas and their attitude was appalling. They told me they were mosquitoes, ants or nits!! I had to go and catch one before they would do anything about it, and their solution was to spray the room with rapid bug spray! I had to demand a room change - which took them 4 hours to arrange!
The 2nd apartment was much bigger than the first but still had very shabby, chipped furniture. This apartment smelt of drains and after bathing my children I discovered why - they were blocked and flooded the apartment out when the plug was pulled on the bath. Not sure how the drainage works on these apartments, but the water did not smell pleasant (I just hope it wasn't linked to the loo!)
Our experience was that the staff were really unhelpful and not friendly at all unless you were paying to eat at the restaurant. The apartments themselves need complete refurbishment and as for the fleas....they totally ruined our families much anticipated holiday.
Do not stay here unless you are desperate and want to be eaten alive by sharing your bed with fleas!

Blue Agean Hotel Gouves Crete
4 / 10
Oct 2008, fairchild

The apartment was immaculately clean. The staff Manager and the owner were rude.
Breakfast was good evening meals were ok ish when it was a buffet situation there wasnt enough food to go round. They played really loud house music 80% of the time which was really inappropriate as it was all families. It was really loud.
Managers customer service and the owners were shocking. Manager was handing out Ouzo in the bar to everyone and missed me and my partner out.
I found a piece of glass in my sons dessert. "Owners reply was
"I know the baker I will kill him"
The actual complex is very small and quite clausraphobic. You could be anywhere in the world as you cant actually see anything else apart from the white walls everywhere. We hired a car and did about a 1000k in a week. We had some stunning really good quality fish meals in Panaramo fantastic food. The market in Heraklion was fun hung out there quite a few times I mean in Heraklion not the market. I would of been very disapointed in this location if we hadnt of hired a car. Gouves itself is very run down and lots of buildings are empty and run down.
However if you want a really easy just want to hang out by the pool kind of holiday then this would be for you. I would advise the management staff to invest in some customer training training. Also owners sons attitude around the resort was sloppy, uncaring and certainly unproffessional

The comlex is not as large as pictures appear to claim in the brochure. The bungalow complex over the road is no more than shaks so be advised not to have those allocated. All the appartments in the main complex are cleaned daily with air con (additional cost) also being available.Hairdryer in the bathroom and also TV but no Sky. At the time of our stay the pool and area was clean.
The reason were are compelled to write are first report are as follows.
The hotel claims to have a kids club but this is not the case. The Kids club closed in Aug 2008. The entertaiment factor is zero so prepare yourself for a long week. We asked at reception to speak to our rep however we did not see her/him for the duration of our stay however we may have missed each other. The hotel claims to be family orientated but this again is not the case. The bar staff were more interested in blasting out RnB and rap music over the pool and bar area with blatant disgusting lyrics all in the ear shot of young children with more interest in pulling a group of young girls than pulling you a beer. Unlike other hotels their is a little catch with the 2 evening shows they put on each week. The catch is if you want to see the show you have to have the meal. Basically if there is no interest in the meal (approx 20euro each) no show will be held- Hotelnext door held same shows with no hidden charges.
I would like to thank however a young Thomson manager (shop manager in the UK) who was on her holidays herself for voicing her concerns to the owner of the hotel. After her meeting the rap music stopped and she even managed to get the kids into the kids club next door however this was chargeable to the parents and is not really acceptable as kids clubs were promoted when familys booked the hotel. I believe the hotel owner as totally mis informed the tour operator on this as some of these holidays were booked quite late when in effect the kids club was closed anyway. Due to the lack of entertainment, kids club and the conduct of the bar staff a formal complaint was put to the rep from the thomson store manager and this is where matters seemed to turn for the worse. The owner of the hotel summoned the Thomson manager to his office rudely in front of other residents and told her to retract the formal complaint as this would affect business and even rang the rep telling him she wanted to retract the complaint which she clearly did not. The bottom line of this review is the Blue Aegean does not deliver the product it is selling to the tour operator- so please make your own decisions if you decide to take your hard earned foriegn holiday at this hotel. Also note you have to vacate the room at 12 noon- some residents flew the early hours of the folowing day so be prepared for lots of time to kill. At the time of our visit the hotel was only about half full-- with the lack of not being able to deliver the service advertised the owner could have put some things right by letting you keep your room longer so your not sitting on your suitcase.
The island itself is nice but very expensive (70 euro eat out 2 adults 2 children) and all bars were expensive.
A personal Thank You to the Thompson store manager for attempting to make ours and other residents holiday the product what they purchased and staff at the Blue Aegean please sit up and take note listen to your residents else people will book elsewhere.

This was a very dissapointing holiday...
3 / 10
Oct 2008, Mrs C Areington

This was a very dissapointing holiday package myself and Husband got ourselves into, as we were expecting a 4 star self catering hotel but did not get it - i would personally rate the blue aegean as a 1 star -
apart from the room not having the 4 star feel to it, the Travel agent and hotel Advertised more than what they realy offer, we are well into our fitness and enjoy a quick early morning work out, therefore we made a point to book with a hotel that suits our needs - but unfortunately we could not use the gym, as there was NO gym, just a small room with two machines, where one was not working....????so we ended up having to pay extra to go somewhere else - the swimming pool is NOT as big as the picture - MUST hand it to the photograper - he knows how to take photo's and photoshop them - THEN if you are looking for a TRADITIONAL greek holiday - it is not the place to go - you will only find the same dishes in ALL THE DINERS - Chips and Fish, or Chips and Kebab, OR you can choose if you want Chips and Burgers or Pizza's, if you are lucky you will get a small starter that has a little greek to it (vine leaves, and stuffed peppers) THAT IS IT!!! the deserts have a bit of greek but also limited - No one told us this so if you want a greek holiday rather try eloundra or hersonissos....The beaches are also better and it has more activities.....Blue Aegean has the worst entertainment shows i have ever seen in my life!!! If i could change the clock i would LOVE to, but now i know to look at reviews first before i book my holiday.....

I booked this holiday after reading...
3 / 10
Sep 2008, Ms E Wilson

I booked this holiday after reading previous reviews and researching thoroughly for a quiet break for myself (42),mother (67) and daughter(20).
I can only say that the reviews posted before we left were glowly and were not a reflection of the holiday we encountered.
I booked a garden bungalow, what we got was basically a shack! on a busy road across from the apartments facing the next door hotel which had agroup of rowdy irish people on their balcony all night long.I mean all night long, add in also a tree infested with the most noisy crickets ive ever heard.
The bungalow was very basic and the worst ive ever stayed in.Just beds nothing to sit on.
After 2 nights we could not stand it any longer and asked to be moved. After another 100 euros plus 50 euros for air condtioning and 40 euoros to keep the room till 6pm on thed ay of departure I felt as though I had been mugged.I dealt with the worlds worst (english)hotel receptionst and the owner who has no idea of customer service.Their attitude was apallingly to say the least and when you deal with the owner you really dont have any where left to go to!
We moved to a one bedroomed apartment which was ok if you dont mind the maids or the pool man waking you up at 8am outside your bedroom. On the day before we left had to move again!.Not a relaxing time! Just telephoned and told to move!
The complex is small not very well maintained and the pool is dirty.
The bar/restaurant is loud and caters for the loud late night drinkers so the rest of the place has to hear every cackle and laugh until the very early hours.
Gouves is quiet but enough bars and restaurants for a week.
Weather was beautiful.
I have never written a review before but felt that the Blue Aegean fell far below my expectations of a 4 star accomodation.was that disappointing.I was looking forward to this break but it was spoilt.
Thomas cook filmed there for TC TV.I saw the maintainence man take a JMC sun Umbrella off a family sheltering from the sun because filming around the pool was starting. The father then had to go and get another TC umbrella the maintence man literally left them sitting in the sun!
Would not recomend to my friends or families with small children and can only think that the previous reviewers must not have stayed in better places or are easily pleased.

Having read previous reviews we...
7 / 10
Aug 2008, Miss SJ Wilks

Having read previous reviews we (myself, partner and son 5yrs.) were looking forward to jumping into the hotel pool on arrival. This was slightly disappointing as it was smaller than it looks on photographs. We stayed in a bungalow which was across the road from the hotel complex and pool. This was fine although the hotel opposite does cater for the younger holiday maker looking to drink and generally be LOUD! We did have to telephone reception once past midnight to complain and ask them to contact the hotel to inform them a large group of young Irish teens were singing crap songs on the balcony and shouting to be heard. Thankfully this stopped.
In the morning you did have to put towels down on sunloungers even though we hate doing this as alot of the people staying there seemed to like to sit in the same spot every day! The Rep did remove them all once one day which then caused havoc when people returned to the pool thus thinking other holiday makers had removed towels and sat in their places they had reserved. The pool was closed one day as it was cloudy and unsuitable to swim in. The beach at the end of the road was fine a bit gritty but alot of seaweed at times some good waves to jump 6 euros to hire 2 sunloungers and umbrella. Turn right at the end of the road and there is a larger sandy beach.
Paying for the air conditioning was a must as a few of the days we were there it was in excess of 35 degrees.
We only ate at the hotel once for a quick snack whick was O.K but nothing to write home about. The best meals we had were the two restaurants you first come to at the end of the road opposite the beach. Walking then to the left past the little white church there were more sea view restaurants (one with a good play ground and bouncy castle). This was just about walking distance for my 5 year old. If you turn right at the end of the road and go past the larger supermarket opposite Bistro Island (food O.K for a snack Greek burgers lovely) and then right again there are some more good restaurants one called Oasis with a playground. The food was good ,lovely lamb cooked in the oven.
Cleaners came and emptied bins and made beds 6 days per week.
We never made it into the centre of Gouves where there are more bars as it was too far to walk although we did go down this one road on a train ride.
The aquarium is well worth a visit much better than a Sea Life centre and cheaper! 10 euros in a taxi one way. The water park was great fun plenty of smaller slides for kids and was not too busy (children under 5 free, which they do not check!) 20 euros in a taxi one way you can then come home when you want to and not have to stick to an organised coach time. The hotel can give you a discount on entry so check at reception.
We enjoyed our holiday but it is probably not a place we would visit again as the resort is too quiet (apart from the rowdy Irish teens!)
Oh yes the airport be warned you have to wait in a slow line to check your baggage in then go to another slow line to have your baggage scanned then another line to check passport then another line to walk through scanner. After all this there was just about time to go to duty free get a hot dog before boarding plane. Not the best Greek airport I have visited!
