We have recently returned from a fantastic week on the slopes in Val Thoren, conditions perfect, snowing through the night to wake up to mild conditions and sunshine. Fabulous ski-ing resort, highest of the "Three Valleys" unimaginably vast runs a new location each day!!! Lifts dont get crazily busy either except last lift home, inevitable. I feel the need to share this information so on booking accomodation
you are not misled and over charged unnesseseraly!! This holiday was booked by my partner as a christmas gift so he certainly aimed to please, he chose Chalet Aimee for its 4 star rating, (surley cant go wrong with 4*) this is no way four star, yes the food maybe but not the accomodation. An aditional £20 paid for our own private bathroom unnesesary outlay not ensuite nor a toilet within. I need to set the scene a bit better!. There were 11 guests in total my male partner and I, 7 great guys from Ireland and 2 guys from Newcastle. I being the only female!!! not a problem as were here for the skiing and a chat round the evening meal. Problem; no locks on the bedroom door, so had to baracade ourselves in at night just incase a wandering guest mistook our room this didnt happen (thank god) but still no privacy, bathroom outside our bedroom so a jig from bathroom to bedroom getting tricky now, toilet across the hall shared with all guests, no hand basin within, so back to bathroom each time! again tricky in the night have to get dressed each time, getting increasingly p***ed off now. Just basic bodily functions I know but this is nature and is not concidered when your not of the same party. No hairdryer in the bathroom I bought one just in case lucky me and no radiator so wet towels galour. The bathroom opposite has both these facilities for the benefit of two guys with no-ish hair!!! . This is not a chalet this is bedrooms, separate baths and sinks, and toilets. Bear this in mind when booking. Lounge/dinning/kitchen all open plan hence kitchen smells on clothes not good ventilation - It has a flat screen TV available no channels except CNN I didnt come to watch TV but conversation sometimes heads towards TV, pretty useless. No amibience at all no greeting smell of mulled wine, no log fires, its too darn hot, heating dictated by the apartment block owners, Couldnt even open window at night as on balcony easy access for a wandering stranger. Overall chalet a real let down, not four star, no character, where was the winter wonderland I craved?. This can be found in Rue Du Soleil this is more like it twinking lights, traditional wood chalets, crisp snow underfoot a craftly little vin chaud after a hard days ski-ing. For Apre ski the location of the chalet is yours to choose either a live band from 5.30-7.30 at the Le Frog & Rostbif, or dancing on tables with the Scandinavians (heck they know how to enjoy themselves) or a vin chaud around the open market selling traditional savoyarde goods.
So when choosing your "Chalet" if booking with a group of familiar friends (up to 12) maybe chose here, bear in mind all I suggested above. This is not for couples who wish to enjoy a holiday with some (decent) amount of privacy. I will definatley insist on ensuite facilities (spelling it out) being bath, sink and toilet with access from my lockable room.
I feel I can say all my comments with confidence, as I was a chalet girl for 5 seasons, have skied since age 13 and enjoyed numerous holidays in all choices and standards of accommodation the ski resorts have to offer.
