We paid for a five star hotel and received 2 star treatment. This is probably the most impressive hotel we have ever stayed in but it went down hill from there. Poor/rude service, broken crockery (what little there was), no towels in the courtesy room and a refusal to loan some to us and the beach life guard physically evicting an elderly couple off of the beach because they didn't want to use a sun lounger, to name but a few. As for the people of Bulgaria, the women were generally really nice but the men were arrogent and dismissive even to their own people. We try to treat everyone with respect and abide by their ways when we travel but a couple of our encounters here were very upsetting both in the hotel and on the beach. I've never had to complain about a holiday before but this hotel has put me of travel. We would have much prefered a B and B in Whitby to the Victoria Palace!

Hopefully you will find this review helpful.
The hotel is not as bad a people make out, the hotel is lovley and VERY clean, staff were helpful if your not rude to them like many people can be(lets face it some is rude to you are work bet your not as helpful as you can be). Food is ok for hotel food. food outside the hotel is nicer but hotel food is eatable.
Sunny beach is a great wee town people are friendly you have to be carefully of the gypsys on the bus, keeps your wits about you and you should be fine.
defo booking up for next year. cant wait.

We've just arrived back from the Victoria Palace Hotel in Bulgaria. This was rated as a 5* hotel, but I wouldn't even give it a 2*! The food was atrocious! The breakfast was stone cold every morning! The staff were unfriendly and unhelpful and weren't really interested in you! There were spillages on the floor that weren't cleared up, there were huge cables exposed on the floor, which somebody managed to trip over! I wouldn't remcommend this hotel to anyone. If you've got family then don't go here, there is nothing for children to do! It is situated quite a way from the main town centre which is quite a walk. Please read this review and don't go here, you will be very disappointed!

Hotel first impresion is very impressive and immaculate. We had torrential rain for the two weeks we were there and the balcony door and window leaked, we were paddling in the carpet. Reported to reps and reception their idea of fixing it was laying towels on floor and leaving balcony door open on dry days to allow the carpet to dry. After our two weeks stay we all came home with colds and a chest infection. Also if you are unlucky and get freak weather like us and are stuck in hotel with a 6yr old, 4yr old and 1yr old there is absolutly nothing for them to do.

Staff - Most of the waiters were tripping over their bottom lip all day, the odd few where friendly but not alot. In bulgaria tipping is expect regardless if you're happy with the food or service....
Food - OK. Some meals where really nice, others where not. The breakfasts where cold most of the time too, but the salads/fruit sections I liked. Anyone saying it was awful is going over the top, even if it wasnt the best at times.
Facilities - The hotel boasts a indoor pool and gym....it doesnt say it cost 20 lev PER visit. This annoyed me when the weather was bad. They had an internet room which was ok and a "sports" bar which wasnt up to much.
Room - good. Fridge, tv, good shower.
Location - Awful. Sunny Beach is not a very nice, the WHOLE of the strip has market stalls selling fake dvd, fake clothes, fake watches, fake shoes, fakes glasses, fake perfumes, fake everything....and unless you like pizza, chips, burger type food....you wont find the resurants too appealing either.
In short......next time you search for a beach holiday abroad.....dont look in Bulgaria. Seriously.

The best holiday ever!
when we arrived the hotel looked magnificent and we were greeted by porters who helped with our luggage and they took it to the room. They didnt ask for a tip but they did greatly appreciate it when we gave them one.
The weather wasnt to good but oh well its a holiday isn't it.
The hotel and apartments are extremelly clean and you will always find cleaners cleaning everywhere.
The swimming pool is excellent although there are a few tiles missing, but other than that the pool is fantastic.
The lift in the hotel is really scary because you can see out of it and if your scared of heights like me then it isn't a good idea to go to the top floor.
The staff are really helpful and none of the negative comments about any part of the hotel are true. Your holiday is what you make of it and those people who said they hated it obviously didnt make it any good.
The spa is extremely good and good for value of money.
Overall this hotel is better than what people say on here and if you are going to this hotel don't listen to the negative comments. Its what you make of it.
The hotel was good itself but sunny beach itself isn't that fantastic. Its just like walking across the front at blackpool. It is annoying when every restaurant you go past the people are always asking you to go in, and even when you have walked of they are still shouting you. Also a particular ice-cream stall---AVOID IT!!! the 1st one you come to when you walk down the front, two words, - rip off. She tried to charge me 6lv for a ice cream and when i refused to pay and walked of she shouted abuse.
Also the children on the front, if they ask you for money and you frefuse they will spit at you.
If you want a sunbed around the pool, its best to get there eqarly because at around 10 o'clock they are all took up by ignorant people who put there towels on one and then wander of for an hour or two.
It is a very cheap place to stay and it is great value for money.I greatly recommend this complex and place but it is best to book some day trips.
Very good holiday. Really enjoyed it.

Hotel more like a 3 star ,a wolf in sheeps clothing, i would never return. On our return to the UK we discoverd that our cases had been tamperd with at the airport in Bulgaria by the baggage handlers our locks had been broken off, and our cases had been gone through, So be extra concerned about this as we were not the only ones,as this was not a security check NEVER AGAIN THIEVES..................................

i have just returned from bulgaria after a fantastic holiday. i dont usualy bother with these review sites but i am just so sick of people complaining about the hotel and more importantly bulgarian people that i have to put in my opinion.
firstly victoria palace hotel is a beautiful hotel, yes i willl admit that the restaurant could be better and i hope that they will improve in the near future. with a good restaurant then this hotel would be one of the top hotels in the country.
Secondly the staff were not rude. you need to remember that english is their third or fourth language so communication is quite hard. this is why you would get a short answer because they try to get their point across. I did find that if you tried to speak to them in bulgarian even using merci or moyla or saying hi in bulgarian they immediately opened their arms to you and showed so much appreciation towards you.
this goes for all bulgarians not just the hotel staff. yes there are rude people and yes there are people that just want your money but you will find these people in evey single county. you dont need to look to hard in your own country to find these people.
i found the majority of bulgarian people warm, friendly, kind and intellegent (how many languages can you speak?) and i wish all you mooners would shut up and look in the mirror.
As regards to first choice, the provided a great service in the hotel. the reps Sinead and Gareth were friendly, informative and always willing to help out in any way possible.
i look forward to going back to bulgaria in the future and would recomend first choice.

THE DAYS OF A CHEAP FRIENDLY BULGARIAN HOLIDAYS ARE OVER!!!!!!!!!
TERRIBLE, All the bad reports on this site are true, Under no circumstances would i ever return to the victoria palace or bulgaria, Horrible Money Grabbing Mean and Intimidating People.
Customer Service the worst I've ever experienced.
Over the past two weeks I was personally shocked by the service and attitude at the victoria prison.
---i was there for two weeks and am horrified by what i witnessed---
Incident One: A Lady accidently knocked over a vase in reception, Hotel security dragged her by arms to reception desk crying and forced her to pay...(Any Hotel Insurance?)
Incident Two: A Guest Asked for four mugs of Coffee, He got three mugs and one small cup partially filled, He requested a full mug instead of the cup, Security were called and the gentleman was ordered to pay for four mugs or he would be thrown out of hotel.
Incident Three: A Lady asked for her passport back at reception (All guests must leave passport upon arrival), Upon receipt of her passport she noticed that her cover was missing, which implicated it had been tampered with, not happy with this she asked to speak to a manager, The manager was called but unavailable & then security turned up and escorted the lady from the premises. (I never saw her again)
Incident Four: A child accidently pulled down a shower curtain, Maintenace were called to fix the problem and the couple were ordered to pay approx £90.00 (May i add all finishes in hotel rooms are poor).
I could write for hours but let me just say dont go. you will regret it.

We have just returned from the Victoria Palace and really enjoyed our stay. Some people complained about the food .but as we have been to Bulgaria before we knew the sort of food that is normally served there and the Victoria Palace food is typical of Bulgaria. We had a pianist playing in the foyer every evening from 7- 10 and on two nights during our two weeks stay we had Bulgarian entertainment in the restuarant, which was nice. our room was clean and the maid service excellent I do have to agree that the crockery was badly chipped and after many complaints new plates arrived for our second week. I think that some of the people who complained about the food expected it to be along the lines of Spain and other european countries. Bulgaria is a fairly new tourist destination and the Bulgarians are still learning. We holidayed in Sunny Beach 18yrs ago when the only tour operators were Balkan & Thompsons and we saw a massive change in the resort so they are learning. Please give them a chance.

From start to finish this is the worst holiday I have ever been on. The hotel was rubbish, the staff were the rudest people I have ever met, Sunny Beach is a Pikeys paradise ! DO NOT GO ! DO NOT GO ! DO NOT GO ! Even if someone paid for my holiday I wouldn't go back. I would rather spend a week staring at the wall in my lounge. Worst place I have ever been and that is no exageration !
