- Advice: The resort of Gumbet was horrid - it was shabby, run-down. The beach was dirty and the beach front

I would just like to say that I visited the Mels Hotel this year and also Gumbet for the first time. The hotel was basic but very clean and all the staff were really friendly. Where it is situated is excellent. I just opened my veranda door each morning and looked straight onto the bay of Gumbet. At night, the view was fantastic also with it all being lit up. My friends were staying at other accommodation, but came down to the Mels Hotel every day and they were even made welcome. As I had travelled myself, the staff knew this and looked after me. They had also put me in a room right above reception, the Thomson rep was great also. Would love to go back again next year, but Thomson has taken the hotel out of their brochure, please, please put it back.

Just arrived back from Mels Hotel with my young daughter, we had a fantastic time. The hotel was right on the beach front, weather was amazing and I felt like I was staying with family. The owner was amazing and could not do enough for us, we felt very safe here. Food was great, hotel was nice and clean and we loved every minute. We will definitely be going back often. Also you can get amazing deals by booking with the hotel direct. Well done Mels.

Very basic, yet clean accommodation. Rock hard beds and pillows and very rough towels. The pool bar was closed, several guests were injured in the pool (loose fixtures) and most of the sun loungers were broken.
There are 2 pool tables in the bar, both are broken and the cues have no tips. The beach is very dirty and was littered with discarded cigarette butts the sea is also full of rubbish, on one occasion we encountered used condoms floating by as we were playing frisbee in the water.
There is lots of noise from the bar and other nearby hotels, particularly in the afternoons when there was a constant boom from a neighbouring bar. The food is very basic and repetitive with many guests opting to eat elsewhere. Thomson really must get to grips with this hotel - it tarnishes their reputation. Oh, the Thomson rep specifies that you should "expect this in Turkey" - Perhaps it's just me then! Either way we won't be returning to this dive.

We have been visiting Gumbet for many years and have stayed at the Hotel Mels every time.
However, this time it wasn't that enjoyable due to the fact the bar staff had changed and the food was terrible. They had no vegetarian choices at all. Rice, rice and bread and salad - I ended loosing weight. They even skimped on the portions they give you. We had limited deserts and it was mostly melon every night.
Rooms are still basic but the maids clean every day which is good. All the sun beds around the pool are broken and never get replaced and not enough of them, I think it time for a refurb!

Had a wicked time! Nice and warm lots to do the hotel was fantastic very friendly people. The beach is on your doorstep! Perfect food compliments to "chef". We send our love to you all. There were 7 girls on our holiday rooms were basic but comfortable. Met loads of friendly people English and the Turkish (siesta hotel v.good) lots of cheap designer clothes bags shoes and those all important holiday souvenirs. Got to have a Turkish bath and then go on a boat trip get a gorgeous tan! Nightlife is pretty good just prepare to be approached by them.
All in all a wonderful holiday we will be back soon!!

Gumbet is a resort approximately 5 miles from the Turkish resort of Bodrum. It has a large bay with a sandy beach albeit the sand is quite coarse. The beach is quite narrow and crowded with sun beds. There are bars all along the beach serving mostly English food. The water there was clean and not too cold.
The hotel we stayed had a pool, bar, pool table and table tennis table. The staff there were very helpful and the food that was served each night on a buffet was very good although I think vegetarians may feel that their choice was limited. I think a good indication of the quality of the food was that you could see the staff eating it as well once they had finished their shift. The rooms themselves were fairly basic with just beds and a shower room / WC but were pretty much all you needed. You could also pay for air conditioning if you wanted. The views from the balcony were very limited in most rooms.
The weather was brilliant while we were there. It was constant sunshine and could get up to 40 degrees Celsius, which may be too hot for some people but ideal for us.
The people are very friendly but as with all Turkish resorts very keen to sell anything and everything to you. The best things to do is say no thank-you and keep walking and avoid entering into conversation with them if you do not want anything. If you are buying something be prepared to haggle with them to get the price you want.
Lots of fake designer wear out there a lot of which is good quality. You can also get fake designer watches and they also sell a lot of jewellery.
There are many excursions you can go on such as boat trips 4x4 trips and horse riding. It is best to shop around for these. I found it best not to use the tour operator trips as they tend to be much more expensive.
The nightlife is varied ranging from clubs to quiet bars and restaurant. The main streets of Gumbet are full of bars, which you can go to, and you can also go down to the beach for a drink at one of the bars there.
Gumbet is a great place to go and I would say it is a good place to go for families and couples.

The hotel had been described as basic, clean and friendly. I found it to be very, very basic, not very clean, extremely shabby and not particularly friendly.
The beds were uncomfortable, the air conditioning didn't work properly, the wardrobes were dirty and broken, the bathroom was very tatty - it wasn't even up to the standard of a youth hostel!
Breakfast was extremely poor - food did not look fresh - looked as if they were serving up yesterday's left-overs!
Swimming pool was dirty - not sure when is had last been cleaned. Sun-lounges and umbrellas were tatty and many were broken.
Staff were not particularly friendly - in fact on the whole they were pretty unfriendly/helpful.
I would definitely not return to either Gumbet or Mels Hotel!
