Fantastic!!! I’ve been on 5 ski holidays, this was the best! The slopes were fantastic, although the last run down to the village was a blue and too daunting for a total novice; however, free bus from meribel centre to village. Humongous range of slopes, I had a local... more

Fantastic Family Holiday
Given all the reviews about this place I felt impelled to write a positive one upon my return as our holiday experience was fantastic. The overall impression of the residence was perfect, the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Our apartment was idically located on the ground floor over looking the slopes, which our young children adored from a sledging point of view every afternoon. Yes, the accomodation is slightly shabby, but from a ski holiday perspective was still perfect given what we had paid - which was full price as it was half term week. We loved Meribel Village as it was quiet with everything within a couple of minutes walk - restaurant, spar, bakery and ski shop - everything we wanted. The bus each morning left at 8:30 and got us to the slopes for the ski school with in plenty of time. We did not find this a major hassle - and we had three kids from 5 to 8mths, four sets of skis and a pushchair! For us it was great because as we didn't have child care in the afternoon, we took turns looking after the kids sledging whilst the other one took the chair lift to ski for an hour or so, and given the location of our apartment (4c) it was ski in and ski out. We also took the kids swimming (cold for the adults) but the kids were oblivious and loved it. Plus, the in house spa treatments were a must - the facial and massage treatments were great.
Rather tired and shabby accomodation
Having stayed here 3 years ago and loved it we revisited with friends. Unfortunatly things were not so good. We arrived at 1pm after a long drive, checked in but told we would have to wait for the keys. Having two small children in our group we asked if it could be sooner rather than later.... we were assured we would be seen to soon, we had even phoned ahead to ask if we can check in early. By 4pm I was standing in reception asking when we could get into our apartment. We were given the key at 6.30pm not a good start for all of us. When we got into our apartment it was fairly clean but much of the inventory was missing light bulbs blown not enough bedding for our group of 8 or towels. Toilet roll holder coming off the wall, shower door hanging off, tiles coming off, front door needed fixing etc. NOT GREAT we let reception know who said come down for bedding and on thursday sent the cups and glasses needed..rather late in the week. NO Cleaning was done midweek and all I felt looked very tatty and in need of some refurbishment. We like the locaiton as it is quiet and easy to get skiing every day, BUT they need to improve back to the standards of a few years ago.

Thank you for taking the time to send us your comments via Tripadvisor. We have carefully considered your feedback on the MGM Residence Les Fermes de Meribel. This RMGM residence is part of P&V Holidays, the leading provider of self-catering accommodation in France. We are pleased to announce that this Residence is due to be refurbished in winter 2009-10. Particular attention will be paid to the upholstery including the sofa, the HiFi, the bedding and general decor and we very much hope that this will be to your satisfaction. We should add that the cleaning contracts have been reviewed in full. Staff have been specially trained and a new protocol is now in place that will ensure higher standards for winter 2008-09. We certainly hope that this will meet the excellent standards you were accustomed to 3 years ago. We are sorry that your stay was not entirely satisfactory and hope that you will choose to holiday in one of our residences or villages again soon.

Disappointing!
After arriving at 10pm from a long drive from Geneva, we arrived at reception and watched the reception staff count money for about 5 minutes before finally getting noticed and getting the keys to our apartment! On entering our apartment, booked for 6 people we we're all very disappointed! We booked a 2 bedroom apartment, 'the twin room' (box room) only had one single bed with another bed that pulls out from underneath, leaving no space for anything else in the room once this was done. There was no wardrobe space within the 'twin' room. The lounge - kitchenette was ok, if a little shabby....similar bed system as above. One stool only had 3 legs, the little table was broken. I Requested a double room, which comprised of 2 mattresses within a double bed frame... why? Our cupboard of an en-suite shower needed unblocking. None of which you'd expect from a 4 star superior complex, as advertised! Meribel village itself has one bar/restuarant so not alot going on, although the shuttle bus is very good and we did have a very enjoyable time. I would not recommend staying in Meribel Village if your a beginner as there is only one ski lift that takes you to a blue slope! The beginners with us had to get the shuttle bus to Meribel Centre and then a lift up to a green slope.

not so good for families with children
We stayed there during the Dutch and French spring vacation. Accommodations located at Meribel Village, which provides access to the ski-slopes though only one chairlift. The appartment building we stayed in was right at the slopes, near this songle lift. There are no ski-schools in the village, so one would have to take the bus to Meribel. The appartments itself are well equiped, but lack proper maintenance. Cleaning has a different meaning in France, as the appartments were not vilthy, but also not really clean either. Lots of dust, broken showerhoses, dripping toilets, etc. Overall, if kept up better, sense of quality will increase too. Only two terrace chairs for an appartment with two balconies and a max. of 8 persons. Not too good. The beds were made when we arrived and slept very well. One would want to bare in mind that the ski-lift will not allow people to take the ride downward, contrary to what is listed in the travel agents brochures. This is not handy when traveling with children who can't take the blue slope down. As a result one basically has to take the bus back. The car to Meribel is not an option for lack of parking space there. We loved the ski-area, but for easy access to the slopes and the area, we'd recommend to stay higher up in Meribel or better even, Meribel-Motarett. Meribel Village is too smal and in a more remote lacation from the slopes.

Great holiday, but hotel/staff let it down!
I have been skiing now for the past 4/5 years & usually go to either the US, or Canada. However in an attempt to avoid both the jet lag and cost, it was decided we would try Meribel. We had an early start in the UK getting picked up by our taxi at midnight and arrived in Meribel village shortly after midday. We were soon told by reception that we would not be able to gain access to our room until 5pm at the latest.......great! Needless to say we wanted to hit the slopes (directly outside of the hotel) and the skiing was fab! Got back into reception after a few hours.........the room was still unavailable and by now we were all getting pretty tired. Trying to stay awake we thought we would all have a quick dip in the very attractive looking swimming pool. There were no towells available to us by reception and dammmmmmmmm the water was cold but once we had defrosted the room was ready, hoooray!! Unfortunately not hoooray, more like what the hell! There were bag fulls of rubbish on the balcony, not enough beds made up, tiny accomadation and the second bedroom might as well have been labled (sauna), as the size was about 7" x 7" with a bunk bed and one window which led onto the corridor (not much ventilation as you can appreciate and pretty noisy as you can imagine). The most laughable factor was the shower which didnt have the use of a shower curtain, which was absolutely pathetic. There were 5 of us sharing a room which after 1 shower each, the bathroom floor contained more water than the swimming pool (quite handy when we had no towels to use to mop up!). We called reception for towells (arm bands, snorkle lol), bedding and to remove the rubbish but to no avail and this unfortunately was an ongoing trend. I later attended reception to get matters sorted. There were many people waiting in reception and I was amazed that every single person was complaining about something or other. Obviously it wasnt only us that were less than happy with the service of the hotel and we didnt see a maid even once in the week so no clean bedding, change of towells etc. Overall the location of the hotel was fab, the service less than fab, the majority of the french (approx 95%) are very unwelcoming towards the english, the cost of living is daammmmmmmm expensive (7 quid for a pot of marmite) but the skiing and location won me over, FANTASTIC!!!

Great accommodaiton but getting tired
The MGM apartments are usually great : recently built, with good facilities and gives you great flexibility when skiing. Have been staying with them for the last 10 years or so. However, the MGM Meribel Village is beginning to get old : knackered kitchen equipment, and not immaculately clean as they usually are. But still great value : if you book make sure you call them direct as it is much cheaper than expedia or other sites.
Great apartments in Meribel
Having been to Meribel a number of times over the last few years I have to say Les Fermes de Meribel has been the nicest accommodation I have stayed in. It offers excellent value for money and is convenient for ski lifts and shops. I am writing this as a previous report gives a very negative opinion of the accommodation but this seems to be because of the tour operator, Inghams. I shall never take a holiday with them again due to a previous bad experiance I had a few years ago. They have no idea what customer service means and their reps are only interested in skiing, not in their guests.
Room allocation problems
I am amazed not to find a list of complaints about this accomodation following our own experience over this New Year. We booked the Fermes de Meribel with Inghams in early May 2006 to ensure we got exactly the room we wanted. We are a family of 4 (two daugters) and the eldest brought along her friend. We deliberatley booked an oversized room to allow for privacy and bedrooms to accomodate all of us comfortably. After a delay at Geneva airport we arrived at the hotel at 9.00pm. When we entered the reception it was packed full with frustrated and angry people, around 30 of them - we were promptly abandonned by the Inghams Rep who stated on his way out that the hotel employees were a bunch of idiots. It became obvious that some of these people had been waiting for up to two hours with their luggage and were waiting to be allocated their rooms. While we waited people who had already been allocated rooms kept returning to the reception to complain about lack of towels, bedding, not room they had booked, rooms not cleaned etc. etc. After two hours waiting with no communication the male receptionist noticed us and said, "what do you want?" I responded, "a room" he replied "wait" We were impressed with his helpful attitude!!! Another hour passed, more people complaining, nothing seemed to be happening. At 12.30am and the last people to be dealt with, we were called into the Managers office and told they had no rooms and we would have to go to another resort. There were no apologies, no regrets and the attitude was blunt, rude and unhelpful. They had no idea where this would be and and when they would find us a room. By then 12.30am it was New Years Eve! After much debate they found us a room only fit to sleep 2 people, it wasn't clean, no towels, no bedding etc. They promised to sort it out the next morning. We were in 'bed' (sleeping on the sofa) by 2.00am having waited 4 hours to get a room. The next day at 5.00pm after a lot of pestering (New Years Eve), we were given two separate rooms on different floors, both were very small. We had no other option than to accept these rooms as absolutely nothing else was available in Meribel for the New Year. We still have no idea what went wrong, many other people were in a similar position to us for the whole week. The accomodation is described elsewhere as 4 star superior. If you are from the USA you will get a shock. By UK standards this would only just pass as a 4 star. Putting aside the the dreadful service, the rooms are small, the pool is cold and the fixtures and fittings are only adequate and quite tired. We made the best of our stay, but certainly did not get what we paid for. New Year celebrations were a let down as we were so tired from our previous evening. Had we not had the poor standards of service, I would still have difficulty in recommending this hotel. We have paid similar prices in Austria and Italy and had much better standards of accomodation.
Great apartment and good value, but be ready for a campus complex, not a hotel
(For context, we were a family with 3 young children, with no need for much apres ski drinking and night life !!) This is a complex of 12 modern buildings in a campus style layout around a loop of road in Meribel Village, about 1.5km down the valley from Meribel. The apartment was excellent, spacious and very functional by French standards. Welcome pack included basic cleaning and washing consumables (unique in my experience of the Alps !!) Only negatives were very uncomfortable pillows (squashy foam, no feathers), uninspiring view from the balcony and (typically) limited choice of TV for English speakers, only Eurosport !! (Take your own DVD player / laptop). There was an internet point in our apartment, but I didn't use it - I think it was dial up not broadband. Mobile phone reception was almost non-existent at the apartment. The pool / spa and large lounge area is in building A, and only buildings A and B have 'covered' access to these facilities. In all the other buildings, you have to walk outside, as much as about 200 metres for the furthest buildings. The spa is very pleasant. The pool is pleasant too, but the changing facilities are woeful, especially at peak time, just after the end of the skiing day. They don't provide towels - you'll need to take them from your apartment. And don't forget to collect a locker key from Reception before you go down to the pool and take off all your clothes !! Within 100 metres (of building A) are the free bus stop to Meribel, a chairlift up the mountain (plus a place to buy your lift pass), a small Spar shop, a charming boulangerie, a pizzeria and bar, an upscale restaurant and a ski rental shop. And you really can ski back, but unless your apartment is in building A, B or C, you will still have to carry skis and walk the last few (tens of) metres. The local facilities (of Meribel Village) mean that you could ski all week without ever having to go into Meribel if you didn't want to (unless you need lessons, in which case you have to go to Meribel). If you have kids and need to carry their stuff, hire a locker in the building that houses the ESF ski school near the Chaudanne area of Meribel, you'll be glad you did. Once we'd overcome the disappointment of not being in the right building for the pool and spa (and not being prepared to put up with the poor changing rooms after the first time) we had a great time here. I just wish that someone had written a blog like this one before I went.
You Won't Be Disappointed!
Owned by MGM, we expected American standards of accommodation - what we got wasn't Whistler or Vail's standards, but it was entirely acceptable. The complex takes up a whole chunk of Meribel Village - a 5 minute bus ride (buses run every 15 minutes during the day) or a 10 minute ski-lift/5 minute green run ski-down into Meribel itself. As such it's perfect for those who aren't complete beginners - but our novice skier had to take all her equipment and herself by bus to ski school every day. It consists of eight or ten apartment buildings - Building A is the closest to the shops and ski lift, and doesn't involve climbing a steep hill to get home every night! We had a three-room apartment between two couples - the 'master bedroom' was a double with en-suite shower and washroom (but no private toilet), the second bedroom was two single beds. The size of both was typically Alpine - but useable. In between the two bedrooms was a decent sized kitchen/living area - with dishwasher, oven, sink, storage, TV, table, sofa and all the usual trappings. There was also a seperate bathroom and one WC for the apartment. The living area opened up to a good-sized balcony with a view down into Meribel Village - pleasant but not particularly gorgeous. Overall, the accommodation was new, warm, welcoming and very clean - we couldn't fault it. The sauna and spa is so-so - the pool, while lovely, is FREEZING cold, and this prevented us using it every day. My wife said the massage treatments, however, were essential! Meribel Village itself is small but perfectly formed. The Lodge Du Village serves both your apres ski drinking and eating needs with an excellent little bar (with Sky TV and all the football) and a pizza restauraunt downstairs. There is also a wonderful Savoyarde-style restaurant where you can enjoy a fantastic gourmet selection of local dishes - this gastonome was certainly impressed! The Spar is open 8-7 and has a good selection of products - although cooking for yourselves is not an option for more than one or two days of your stay. Next door to it is Ski Set for your equipment and an artisanal bakery for the morning croissants. A trip into Meribel itself is probably required at least 3 nights of the week to prevent boredom - there are four or five really good restaurants on the main drag, although the selection is much of a muchness - pizza, pasta, steak or fondue! However, the resort as a whole is unfeasibly expensive - expect to spend at least 60 Euros per person on two courses + drinks - with the biggest hit coming on starters and wine (real markups in evidence!) Lovely accommodation, great location, fantastic skiing and everything you expect from the Three Valleys. Recommended! Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments :)
