Beautiful location. Very clean...

Beautiful location. Very clean accommodation, maid service daily, welcome food pack on arrival with a few basics plus a bottle of wine. Extremely friendly, helpful staff. Only slight issue with accommodation is that typically Greek shower was very small & too close to toilet. We used the pool showers instead which were lovely and spacious with plenty of hot water. The swimming pool was good, there is a tennis court free to use plus a few children's swings etc. Quite a few families with children were staying as we went at half term.
Super little pool bar overseen by very helpful Wendy with books to read & chess to play. No need to cook as breakfast & lunch available at reasonable prices. Drinks available. Honesty book system seemed to work well in the evenings after Wendy went home around 4.00pm. Wouldn't be worth having staff on duty then as most people go out to the tavernas in the village or elsewhere to dine, so we felt it was a great system.
Unless you are aiming to just relax, you do need to hire a car to explore the island but be aware that many of the roads are twisty & mountainous. The beach at Spartia took us about 20mins to walk down to but we are fairly fit. Could take longer quite easily. The return is very hilly so took us 30mins to walk back. We avoided the walk in the hottest part of the day. Could be quite dangerous at night (not lit & no pavement) so would recommend calling a taxi to return if you haven't a hire car and dine late at the beach restaurants.
Spartia beach is sandy and quiet. Take a sunshade (available free from site) as there is very little shade on beach. There is a swimming pool with an outside shower you can use if you have a drink at the Panas Hotel, 2nd one up from the beach. This came in handy to shower off after swimming in the sea. There is also meant to be a shower on the beach but we couldn't find it. There are 3 tavernas/restaurants nearby, one with a terrace overlooking the beach which was our favourite but watch out for mosquitoes. We dined early covered in insect repellent when eating here after being bitten to avoid being dinner ourselves but the view and food were wonderful.
This is such a beautiful area, but it is quiet so probably no great for teens unless they love snorkelling. We couldn't find a short boat trip, only ones for the whole day you had to drive miles to get to & other amusements were limited. Not much history on this island due to the devastation of the 1953 earthquake. Most buildings are post 1953 but it is a very pretty island.
Wonderful for a great rest.

When I first arrived at Residence...

When I first arrived at Residence Poseidon, I noticed the stunning views, so got the camera to work immediately. We were then welcomed by Nicos who was really friendly, he even helped carry our cases to the room. My first impression of the room was how clean and tidy it was. Air conditioning was a great help as the temperatures were really hot. On the dining table I noticed a 2 loaves of bread and a basket of fruit, I then checked the fridge and to my amazement there were bottles of wine, butter, biscuits, mineral water, fruit juice......this was a great touch, I had been awake for so long, the last thing I wanted to do was venture out and find a shop....so I sat on the balcony with a bottle of wine and some marmite on toast (I always take a jar of marmite with me).
Once I had settled in I went down to the bar which is beside the pool and wanted to buy my children an ice cream and I then learned about the honesty book (you take what you want or have the bar manager prepare one of many dishes for you). All you do is write what you have had and pay at the end of the holiday if you want. (I paid it every 3 days, so that I didn’t have an enormous bill at the end of the holiday).
The place is the cleanest place I have stayed at...the cleaners really do deserve the utmost respect, they keep everything immaculate and it is as though they were ghosts (you hardly see them).
If you want a holiday with clubs and bars you will need to travel...this place is for people who want to relax and take it all in. I usually hire a car for 10 days and spend 4 days relaxing by the pool.
The owners of Residence Poseidon are Vaghelis and Anna who are very family orientated, whatever your needs, they will make sure they are met (I went to the shop one day and it was closed, so on my way back Vaghelis saw me and insisted on taking me to a shop in the next village - what a top bloke).
Anna and Vaghelis adored all children and made the whole holiday really special. I could retire there and be very good friends with them.
My overall advice is:- if you have children, you will need a car, it isn’t far from the beach but on the way back you will be walking up hill and it is steep, especially when you have all the equipment necessary to keep children entertained for the day (food, snorkelling equipment, towels, etc,,).
Try the BBQ evening, it is amazing, you will eat so much that you will not be going out the next day, you also receive a bottle of free wine and get to mix with Vaghelis, Anna and all of their family (uncles, brothers, cousins, and they are all really friendly).
Try the food at Cava Liakas in the village, the food is amazing, again the owners are the most polite helpful, friendly people you will ever meet.
Travel around the island, it is beautiful and as I said earlier I would consider having my home here.
Don’t bother going to this place if you like to get drunk, go out clubbing constantly or make lots of noise like the stereotypical englishman abroad. This place is for people who want something more special - (Families - Professionals - Young Lovers).
I would also hire a motor boat on one of your days - you will discover so many beaches that are really some of the best in the world.
Lastly I would like to say - don’t take any advice from people who say you shouldn’t go - they were obviously meant to go to Tenerife or Ibiza (I have been to both in my younger days 20-26).
Overall rating 11 out of 10.
I will go again and again.

I'm amazed anyone would not like it...

I'm amazed anyone would not like it here. It was the best holiday we've ever had, so much so this was our second time at Poseidon.
You need to hire a car really as Spartia is remote but that's it's charm. Close to the airport but off the beaten track, we travelled the whole island from here. You can walk to tavernas and 2 minimarkets from the apartments. They were clean and we had a great welcome pack with bread, milk, fruit, wine, juice and CHOCOLATE BISCUITS! Big hit with the kids who'd been up since 3am the day we arrived.
The honesty book is a lovely idea and there is someone preparing drinks and snacks 6 days a week from
the morning til 4.30pm, so you only need to use it out of these hours.
We had a wonderful view of the sea and mount Aenos.
Anna and Vangelis are incredibly helpful and friendly, we are still in touch with them throughout the year! Everyone loved the kids and had time for them.
The pool area is great, a good size with two shaded areas and lots of sunny ones too. This is surrounded by a large springy grass area (that greek grass that's almost like astro turf). There is a barbecue and childrens play area and tennis courts. There are magazines and books to borrow as well.
Nikos was the manager the first year but had left last year and Anna had taken over. We loved them both and were so pleased to bump into Nikos last year and share a drink.
The best place to eat we thought was Cavo Liakas and they taught us and the children new greek words each time we went. Proper home cooked greek food, fab moussaka.
There are 2 beaches within walking distance but you've got to be fit to get back up the hill. The nearest is a little one next to Vigla and opposite Thermanti Villas, shaded for some of the day so good if you have young children. The main more well known beach is further down the hill, good sandcastle sand, shallow swimming and there is a taverna for drinks but they are dear.
Overall an amazing place, clean, friendly, quiet, good location, great views. May go again this year too!

Do not bother! In the middle of...

Aug 2007,

Do not bother!
In the middle of nowhere. You will definitely need a car to get to anywhere. The beach is too far to walk to on a daily basis and quite dangerous as there is no pavement on the road leading to it.
There are 3 nice tavernas within reach but not much else.
The rooms are nice but the owners are not the best of hosts.
The bar is mostly self-service which saves the owner the bother and expense of employing someone on a full-time basis. It works on an honesty basis where you enter your bar purchases on a tab set-up for you and you pay at the end of your hols.
That is very good of the owner who clearly trusts all his guests, but, as we found out, he also saves on paying tax on your purchases as you do not get a receipt - we asked for ours but did not receive it! I would not of minded but his prices are not the cheapest either - greedy git!

Never have I been made more welcome...

Never have I been made more welcome than here. Very friendly and helpful staff, very clean and functional rooms that are cleaned on a daily basis. Good views of the Ionian and of Mt.Einos.
Spartia lies on southern end of Kefalonia and is mostly unspoilt by the tourist industry, there are 3 good Tavernas to choose from and a small mini market. I can recommend the Grill Taverna (small but very friendly and will accommodate your needs as best as possible), the locals eat here too.
Travel from here to the rest of the island will require the use of a hire vehicle, there are few buses. There are numerous excursions available to most of the island, getting collected from the residence and returned later that day, but if you want to explore you need that hire car. Eating out is relatively cheap and the food excellent.
Only the family rooms have TV. , although there is a satellite TV in the pool bar.
Highly Recommended.
