" I was a customer at this hotel for a... "

I was a customer at this hotel for a week's skiing in Jan in a large group of 16 friends. On arrival I found the hotel to be quite disappointing. It took an age for the 2 receptionists to check everyone in, but with so many people we really didn't mind although their very poor English made the whole process much slower.

I shared a room with 2 other people and never in my life have I seen such a small and cramped hotel room. It was tiny, tiny, tiny and the entire stay there was so uncomfortable with so little room. I must say though that the hotel rooms are clean, although one of our towels was damp in the bathroom on arrival - which was changed. The chamber-maids are clearly not that thorough because on 2 occasions we had to go down to reception to ask for replacement toilet paper.

The hotel had a swimming pool advertised which was unavailable when we were there due to the very fact that it was still being built which you could hear during the day - but not to any extent where it disturbed us very much. The tour operator had a shuttle bus provided for us for transport to the slopes. The skiing was great. But back to the hotel: the entire week we were there the night-club was not open, the games room was dark, dank, depressing and smelled. Oh, I must mention one thing before I continue, the restaurant is in the basement and the toilets in the restaurant are really something to behold: it is a hole in the ground. Only once I have experienced such dire facilities and that was atop a mountain with no other facilities around (so it was acceptable) - but to behold such a sight in a restaurant of a hotel, it is quite disgusting and stomach-churning.

The food was quite awful too. The breakfast had very little in the way of fresh fruit on offer. The milk was warmed and no chilled milk was available. Our package came with breakfast and an evening meal but we ate at the hotel only once in the evening of the week we stayed. The food was of very poor quality and was constantly cold. On one evening I decided to give the evening meal another try in the hotel which fared decidedly better. The food was really ok but the service wasn't. I was on my own and had to clear my own table while the two waiters chatted amongst themselves, then as I prepared to leave I was accosted by one of them demanding I pay for the two drinks that the 2 girls had, that had been sitting at the table before me, because they had left without paying for them.

Bulgaria is fantastic for cheap drink but to our horror we found that the price of drink at the hotel bar depended on who served you, for instance - I bought one vodka, one Malibu and one coke for 8 lev one night and for 18 lev the following night. We brought this up with our tour rep who was a really lovely gentleman and he solved that problem promptly. He also organised free use of the Jacuzzi - which is just a big jet bath in actuality and the sauna, in lieu of the swimming pool.

Most evenings we would eat out at one of the other hotels - where there is an Italian restaurant and other such variants. All in all we found the food to be thoroughly disappointing and found it easier on the stomachs to purchase food from the local supermarket (which is small and basic but sufficient). I would recommend the one Chinese restaurant that is present in the resort. Unfortunately I can't remember the name but your hotel will know it and will reserve you a table - the restaurant will actually send a car to come pick you up, albeit a cinquecento or the like. The taxis in the area are a dime a dozen but watch out because some of them are absolute lunatics and do try to get you to pay through the nose. Ask them first how much it will cost you to go somewhere.

I would just like to state that I was not expecting high standards but I absolutely abhor claims that are made by hotels that are not upheld. This is one such case. When I frequented the hotel it had been advertised as a 3 star but in fact I have now found out that the 3 star section of the hotel was not actually open. The hotel definitely disappointed but we spent such little time there that it did not impact on the overall enjoyment of the holiday or of the skiing.

One word of advice - the hotel provides you with a slip of paper upon check-out which you must present at the airport. The hotel will tell you the importance of carefully minding the document but I cannot stress highly enough that you really do not want to loose that document or you won't be leaving the country very quickly or cheaply. The airport in Plovdiv is a bit of a nightmare too. It is small and cramped and gets filled up very rapidly with queues of tour bus deportees. With no-where to sit, a 2 hour wait can be a long time.

Certainly the captain of our plane couldn't berate them enough. I have never experienced a captain complain about the service of an airport before to the passengers but the plane had arrived and been ready for take off 40 minutes prior to our scheduled departure time and we did not take off for another hour and a half after that.

Final Comment: I would certainly return to Bulgaria for the skiing because it was fantastic and I did actually thoroughly enjoy the skiing and the company and the holiday as a whole. The saving grace of the hotel experience was really the fact that everything is actually so cheap, but next time it will be 5 star all the way. You get what you pay for, but in the case of this particular hotel, you get a lot less than what you pay for.
