This was the first ski holiday we had taken our family on and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Hotel Lion to anyone!
We read the reviews posted on this web site and was worried what we would find. The food was ok, and although we were part of a party of 13 there was something for everyone.
The staff were really friendly but occasionally there were communication problems which is only to be expected in a hotel that welcomes guest from every European country. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the night club didn't disturb us at all.
The instructors were really friendly in fact Boris, boarding instructor, took us all out to the village on more than one occasion to show us all the happening bars!
If you wanted to sample a more authentic Bulgarian atmosphere I suggest you visit the old village where 4 beers cost the equivalent of £2.50.
The only downsides is the queues for the gondola and the long transfer.
Please don't be alarmed by the other reviews, we all had a brilliant time!

Hotel was clean and tidy with fair facilities. The food in the hotel was very poor and got the impression the hotel was keen for people on a half board basis, not to eat in the hotel.
During a gala evening there was a 1.5-hour gap between the service of a starter and main course.
I would not recommend this hotel or skiing in Bulgaria, as the designated ski instructors on the whole struggle to understand English.

Hotel initially gave a good impression. However I was soon let down after being kept awake till 4am each night by the hotels night club which operates in the basement.
Food was terrible and did nothing to satisfy a Western European taste. The buffet dinner generally consisted of a wide selection of poor looking meats, (often undercooked), with little in the way of vegetables, potatoes, rice, chips, pasta.
Good dishes did exist however you had to pay extra for them on the menu. I got the impression the food was deliberately poor in an attempt to force you to pay for something decent.
I am not an overly fussy person but I did not meet anyone on holiday here who was satisfied with the food. If you are going here do not go full board and take a good set of ear plugs should you be given a room near the night club.
Better off going to the Hotel Perun across the road which has much better facilities, although I hear the food is just as poor.
Eat out inexpensively in one of about three or four local restaurants serving non-Bulgarian food, for about £20-25 for a two course meal for a family of four.
When will tour operators, (Thomson, Crystal etc), learn that families do not want to go to a hotel with an all night nightclub and lousy food. Shut down the night club and serve up at least half decent food and I would rate the hotel a seven or eight.

If you've not skiied before, this is an ideal resort to start in, as the instruction is good but without the added pressure of 'slope snobbery' that you might get in other resorts!
Bulgarian's like their food warm, not hot, so if you are going on HB basis then expect this. That said the food is reasonable, plenty of choices and it is not the same every night! There's also the usual fodder in the mountain restaurants.
Shopping is fairly limited (unless you want to buy ski gear!), so don't expect this in resort, you can get pretty much everything in Sofia (2/3 Hours transfer away).
Advice: A good solid resort growing in popularity and becoming increasingly busy. Go Visit!
Activities: There were many places to eat but sightseeing activities are limited.
Good for: Ski
