" great holiday "

we have just returned from a brilliant holiday in the alpenhof, what friendly people always made you feel welcome.
Lovely homemade food and welcoming tea & coffee when you returned from sking.
The resort i thought was breath taking what you would expect from Austria plenty to do bus stops outside to take you to the mountain train and go to the ski show i think its tuesday night well worth it.

Advice: brilliant breath taking

Activities: top of the mountain

Good for: Ski

" Recently returned from a 4 day trip... "

Recently returned from a 4 day trip to the Alpenhof in Ellmau with two friends. We had a wonderful holiday.

We found the staff to be exceptionally helpful, without being overbearing. The rooms were cleaned thoroughly and were well kitted out with hairdryer, tv and all the little bottles of shower gel etc., which one has come to expect from hotels.

A menu choice was given each day to choose for the following day, the portions were not huge, but was more than enough, especially as the hotel offered tea and cakes between 4 and 5pm, all at no extra charge. Breakfast provided a good choice and you could eat all you liked.

My friends had room 15, which provided a stunning view of the mountains and overlooked the golf course and a beautiful fountain. I had room 16, which was a single room, this was perfectly adequate for a short stay, my only difficulty was with the wardrobe, which was at the end of the bed and a bit awkward to get at.

A fabulous holiday all round, thanks to the wonderful friendly staff and to Thomson.

" We stayed at the Alpenhof in March... "

We stayed at the Alpenhof in March this year and had a great family ski holiday, the resort is fantastic and the wide stunning runs from the mountain were great.

The hotel was so much better than we hoped for, the rooms were clean and had everything you'd need, plenty of hot water at all times, they were made up daily and toiletries supplied and replenished were an unexpected bonus.

The Staff were welcoming, friendly and very helpful and the rep Lawrie was great, Wizz Kids was a big hit with all the children in our group and it was lovely not to have to carry all the ski and equipment to ski school every day. We cannot praise the staff enough apart from cancelling the quiz for the football but as there were some watchers in our group to we'll let it go !

Most especially the chef was brilliant, the food was so much better than we were expecting and portion sizes were very good, some of the kids could have been bigger but when we asked for extra they were brought without question. The chef even granted many of our odd requests during the week and was great, plain pasta ! Thanks.

The only disappointment was the size of the classes in the childrens ski school, we were told that they are paid by how many they have in their groups so ours were all put together in a group of about 15 with ages ranging from 4 - 10. The little ones found it hard to keep up even though they are good little skiers, we pulled them out on the 3rd day and the ski school gave us a free private lesson for the 3 little ones. But this meant that we lost our ski school days as well, the lessons were only in the morning.

Having said that it was a great hols, thanks to all we'd go back again.

" Have just returned from the Hotel... "

Have just returned from the Hotel Alpenhof in Ellmau, Austria. This is our second visit to this hotel having booked last year.

On arrival we were pleasantly surprised with the accommodation and alterations made since our last visit last September. The lounge, dining room and bedrooms had all been improved.

We have stayed on both the first and top floor on the side of the hotel facing away from the views but having the advantage of being a little quieter, being away from the main road.

As previously we found all the staff were very pleasant and helpful including John the assistant manager and Helen our Rep. The rest of the staff were superb as usual with a friendly approach and a special mention for Caroline who was brilliant throughout our 10 day stay.

The food was superb with breakfast either continental or full English as required. Dinner was 3 courses and superb on all nights of our stay. On one occasion we had a Steak meal which was just the best we had had in many years in the UK.

As previously mentioned a quarter litre of wine or soft drink was also provided free with the meal. Packed lunch was available all days except for the tea leaf who decided to help themselves on one occasion (you know who you are).

Huskys bar was improved since last year and was efficiently run by Kirk the bar Manager who provided a friendly service.

All in all a superb holiday, cant fault the Alpenhof or this years staff, think the previous poor rating must have stayed in a different hotel or pressed the wrong keys on the keyboard.

Will take some beating next year Crystal... watch this space.

" Just returned from hotel Alpenhof in... "

Just returned from hotel Alpenhof in Ellmau. The hotel was clean and the staff were helpful and friendly.

We had room 15, which has a balcony overlooking the mountains and golf course and was the best view that we have had from a hotel bedroom. The only thing that lets this hotel down is the food, whilst the menu looks good, the actual meals are tasteless and poorly cooked.

" Have just returned from the Hotel... "

Have just returned from the Hotel Alpenhof in Ellmau, Austria. We were quite concerned after booking the holiday and then reading another person's comments on Holiday Watchdog.

On arrival we were pleasantly surprised with the accommodation. We had a lovely room on the first floor, which overlooked the Wilder Kaiser Mountains and a golf course.

All the rooms have recently been refurbished and have new bathrooms. Although the hotel is small we were well aware of this when we booked the accommodation. We found all the staff were very pleasant and helpful and Helen our Rep was great, and very helpful and knowledgeable about the area.

Breakfast was either continental or a hot meal was also available. Dinner was 3 course and adequate. There was a choice of dishes, which you selected the previous evening. A quarter litre of wine or soft drink was also provided free with the meal. Another nice touch was the packed lunch, which consisted of a bun with filling of your choice, cereal bar and drink, and fresh fruit was also available. There was also afternoon tea and cake provided between 4-5 p.m.

There was a good selection of trips available. We went on the Saltzburg trip, the Krimmel Waterfalls and an evening trip on a horse and carriage. All were great and we felt were good value for money. Flights and transfers went very smoothly.

Ellmau itself is a beautiful village with a funicular railway. There is a free Kaiserjet bus, which runs between the 4 villages in the region. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants in the proximity and a big supermarket next door to the hotel. All in all we had a great holiday. Only went for 4 nights at the beginning of June but loved it so much and there was still lots more we wanted to do that we went back again 2 weeks later for another 4 nights. We would have no hesitation in going back again in the future.

" We were very disappointed with the... "

We were very disappointed with the Alpenhof.

We were surrounded by luxurious hotels with all facilities, but found the Alpenhof, despite its purported 3 star rating to be basic in the extreme.

The all British staff were pleasant and friendly, but barely trained and room cleaning was cursory.

Breakfast was fine, but dinner was basic and cheap. Because of a mistake, admittedly made by ourselves, one of our party was left to eat a cheese sandwich for dinner after a day on the slopes, because the only alternative that could be offered was chicken nuggets.

The lounge was too small to accommodate even our party of 8 together, so relaxing after dinner was difficult.

Kid’s club facilities, staff and arrangement were excellent and this was the saving grace for me with a youngster in ski school.

Sorry Crystal, but you really must try harder. For the price charged, this was very poor value for money compared to the alternatives.

We will be booking independently from now on.
