We stayed in the SA Caleta Apartments for a week and it was the worst week we've had away. Ants, ants and more ants in the bedroom and bathroom. We'd spray them away and the next day more would be back. We complained to reception and they did killed the ants but a new batch was back the next day!

We slept very little as we would be concerned about any ants that might be running around on our three and half old son.

We felt the apartement was totaly unsafe for young children - the cooker had no on/off signals, the bed lights had no covering on top ( a child could easily pull out the bulb), the front patio door and bedroom window did not lock securely, and I was stuck inside the bathroom twice as the knob on the door was all wonky!

We did not eat there, my partner saw the menu and everything seemed to be with chips - not my idea of a holiday eating chips. We enjoyed the food at the Ocean restuarant which is around the corner from the resort.

We travelled with 4 adults 4 teenagers and 3 kids went half board 1st week and 2nd week got money back and ate out as choice for half board limited and food was not worth the wait or the money.

GOOD POINTS

Bar staff very hard working and a great laugh

Entertainment Alberto and Lucy worked all day and night to entertain everyone they were great people working with limited facilities but they did a great job.

Maid service sheets changed 3 times in 2 weeks towels 4 times which could of been better toilet rolls were,nt enough .Maids were a bit moody and do not speak spanish the housekeeper a thin spanish little hitler who looked angry all the time and ran to snitch on anyone not pulling there wait nasty woman.

Reps were great especially Jane who we had a laugh with and who helped us all out with everything she could her hands were a bit tied as the manager was very strict but she tried her hardest top rep.

Beach very close and clean.

Pools clean and safe and we had no trouble getting beds from 8 in the morning.

Bad points

Food and drink overpriced and not very nice Ocean restaraunt round the corner cheap and top food and service.

The manager had strict no noise rules after 12.30 and security would come round to tell you off even if it was just excited kids unable to sleep.

Apartments were full of ants and we had to have them fumigated on the 2nd day.

no ovens in kitchen just 2 rings and square microwave bed broke as only thin slatted.

Nothing for teenagers and only under 8 in kids club so not recommened for families with older kids as they will be bored and get told off for messing in pool or coming in and out of complex after 10.

Restaraunt has a take away menu that you are not allowed to take away !!!!

Playground very basic and kids will be bored after 10 mins.

Overall this is a very good located place to stay but do'nt eat here take ant spray and do,nt take over 8 yr olds as security and manager not very tolerable with noise or kids antics. But beautiful setting and nice community spirit with other guests.

this was our second trip to the sa caleta playa..........and i must agree with the other reviews...standards have slipped quiet a bit.

we were not able to get a sunbed by the pool for the whole two weeks we were there....and it was annoying to see the same people on the same sun beds in the same spot every day.

the apartments are very very basic for what you pay and there were ants everywhere....our apartment was on the groundfloor looking over the garden areas which was really good for the kids but a pain in the night with older kids playing football till gone midnight...

we never eat at the lord nelson resturant on the complex so i cant comment on that...we eat at the very few resturants around the complex....ocean resturant was my favourite 3 courses for 15 or 20 euros and the kids loved the bouncy castles there.

sa quadra steak house a fantastic meal but way over priced.....the chinese across the road was fab really cheap and a pint was under 2 euros.

we went into cala nbosch where there was alot more choice...more competition so less expensive.

the location of the sa caleta playa is brilliant right on a small fabulous cove beach its worth putting up with playa just for that......i would go def go again.

the first choice reps and the hotel staff were very good......when i booked my holiday i asked for ground floor apartments and thats what we got and a welcome bottle of wine for coming back for a second time.......

we will be returning again and hopefully by the time we do the sun bed and the resturant situation will be sorted out..

Have just returned from a two week holiday staying at sa caleta playa apts. This was our third visit to menorca and on the whole we had a fabulous time.Their was myself, husband and two boys aged 5 and 7 in our party. Here are our views....

On our arrival which was late evening we were given keys to our apartment which i have to say was very clean, spacious and decorated as you would expect, enough for our two week stay as we didnt intend to stay in our room this was just a base.Kitchen was very minimal however apart from eating breakfast there which we bought from local shop each morning was adequate as i wasnt on holiday to cook for the two weeks we were away.

The room were visited by maids a few times a week and we had clean sheets and towels for the duration of our stay.I know previous reviews people have complained about the lack of tiolet roll however you are self catering therefore surely you can provide yourself with your own which at shop was only 95c for 4 rolls.

Facilities: There were three pools however forget about getting a sun bed as my husband on many occasion saw people getting up at 4-5am to put there towels out.Forget blaming the germans for this there werent any during our stay this was all english people, which i feel is very sad that there holiday to menorca consisted of just this location with them never exploring menorca as we did.

The Bar area was a complete joke as you had to queue every time for your drinks as there were not the staff to cater for the amount of guests and also the prices changed every time even when you ordered the same drinks.

Restaurant:This was actually the the only thing that i can say was bad about our holiday the service was bad, food very poor and then you would wait upto an hour for your bill. The reps are aware that this is the main thing that needs attention as many people complained about The Lord Nelson restaurant.

Best places to eat are:Sa Nacra and Sa Quadra(Steak House) in Santandria and many of the restaurants in nearby Cala N Bosch. If you go to ones in Sa Caleta ie Ocean or The Commercial Centre near bus stop they are Microwaveable meals.

Excursions:It is worth the hours trip by bus(you have to go to cuitadella first)to go to Mahon and take a ride on the Yellow Glassbottom boat for an hour which at 30 euros for a family of four is fantastic.Mahon has a regular market on certain days and the shops there are great. Also worth a visit is Cala Galdana beach just past Ferrieres it is a bit of pain to get too but the beach cove is one of the best for views in Menorca.

Cigarettes are very cheap we paid 23 euros for 200 Royals which is half price compared to what you pay in england. The euro is not very good at the moment however you can still manage to find a bargain, the pottery in menorca is lovely.

All in all we had a lovely time, the menorcan people are very friendly and with children especially.

A big Thank you to our First choice reps Jane and Little John who were always on hand should we have a query or worry.

overall the complex was very good very clean , rooms basic but clean . the waiters work very hard from morning till night . the food was ok .i have 2 children ages 8 and 14 and they had a great time but if you have children over 14 maybe its not right for you . the only thing that annoyed me was you was unable to get near the pool unless you was up at 6am to put the towells on the bed , but their is a beach near by which is

very good. their is plenty of places to go and see and eat , overall we had a graet time and we would go their again in the future.

I have just returned from a 2 week holiday Sa caleta Playa, we took our 2 daughters (4 and 6) who had the most fabulous time. We arrived in Menorca with the sun shining. On arriving at our apartment block, it looked clean and tidy. OUr apartment was situated very close to the beach entrance and on the groud floor. Our apartment was very basic but fine for what we needed. The cleaners were great, in most days cleaning and changing towels and sheets regularly. The pool was a stones throw away, which our children lived in. It was a pain trying to get a sun bed, but you just have to join in a dn get up early. The food att he hotel wasn't great, average english pub food, but very over priced. Drinks were also abit expensive but its a holiday and you are then to enjoy yourself not penny pinch for 2 weeks. There was a shop next door that was reasonably priced and we used to just buy our alcohol and take into th e seated area. I have read previous reviews and disagree with alot of things. The staff att he hotel were great and very helpful, the reps were just brilliant and always eager to please. Entertainers Alberto and Lucie were fanatstic and tried really hard to encourage the guest to enjoy themselfs. The night time shows weren't fantastic but the Alberto and Lucie worked non stop to try and bring fun and laughter to the holiday. Activities throughout the day were fun and included pistol shooting, archery, darts, water polo etc etc etc etc. The resort was just wonderful, very unspoilt and free from overcroweded tourists. We ate at most of the places around and must say that sa Nacra was just lovely, eating your food while watching fish play was great, our children were welcomed at every place we visisted in sa caleta, santandria and the city. We went the market in the centre which wasn't great, but again its nice to be around the culture and relaxed feel from the spanish. The pool was great in the day and the girls spent hours just playing with other young people. We met some really nice couples while we were there, which really added the extra special feel to our holiday, it was a shame we didn't meet them in the first week. This apartment setting is great for little ones, they have a really active kids club, that really go out of there way to make the visit enjoyable as possible for the kids. Overall we had a great holiday and the apartments weren't 5*, but had the facilities to make it what you want it. I would really recommend these apartments for families with children from 2 - 9 years. It was a really lovely experience and thank you to all the satff for making it very enjoyable.

I cannot find the words to sum up how horrific an experiance it was to spend a week at the Sa Caleta playa apartments. The apartments are pathetic and are completely infested with ants, which, the cleaners refuse to do anything about.

The entertainment was a complete joke....a halloween show in August.....yeah right. Friday night is the highlight of the week when a couple of kids decide to do karaoke.

The pools are very good, however unless your up at 5.30 am to reserve a sunbed forget it, you can always go down to the beach and pay 6 euro to rent a sunbed, which are also owned by Sa Caleta.

There are only a couple of restaurants in Sa Caleta however they are all pathetic, it is all microwaved food and well over priced. The restaurant in the complex is the worst I have ever been at in my life 6 euro for a microwaved cheese burger( with no cheese, onions, ketchup or mayo) absolutely pathetic.

The staff are very ignorant especially the wee bockle behind the bar serving. 3.50 euro for a watered down pint of Mahou (well more like 3/4 of a pint) disgusting.

If you like Ants, have kids, get the bus to another town, and dont drink in the complex then this is the holiday for you.

In my opinion The Sa Caleta Playa Apartments is Butlins in the sun.

Having read previous reviews of these apartments, I wasn't expecting anything too grand! Our first impression of the apartments was that it was small and very overcrowded. The pool area was crammed with sunbeds and it was heaving with people.

We had an apartment on the ground floor. It was quite a good size, basic but what we expected. What we didn't expect was the family of ants that was also going to spend their holiday with us! They were everywhere, in the bathroom and all over the kitchen area. The rep didn't seem too bothered and neither did reception.

The beds were very uncomforable. I think we had camp beds with springs sticking into us! My son's bed collapsed one night! I put a blanket on the mattress to try and cushion it a bit. The matresses are disgusting! Dirty and stained. Best not to look!

We had to spend everyday at the beach as there was never a spare sunbed round the pool. People must've got up before the birds, because there were towels all over the sunbeds by 8am. One day we counted 10 people in the pool and 40 sunbeds reserved! Those beds had towels on all day, but not always had people on them. The beach is lovely but very small. It's 6 euros for a sunbed which we did have so we spent an extra 144 euros on beds when we could've had them for free by the pool. It was our choice to pay for the beds, as I didn't want to spend 2 weeks sitting on a hard beach.

The evening entertainment is dreadful! They promised acts from the UK but don't think they ever appeared. If you get a room by the entertainment area and you have small kids, they won't sleep until it's all over. It's very loud.

Saying that, I don't think any kids slept while we were there. There were big groups of teenagers causing problems, stealing from balconies and trying to climb over the fence into the neighbouring hotel. The reps were aware and were trying to deal with it. Sa Caleta isn't a place for teenagers as there's nothing for them to do.

The only decent restaurant to go to is The Ocean. We went there evry night! The waiters are very friendly and work really hard. The food is ok, but gets a bit boring after a bit. The kids liked it because of the bouncy castles.

I'd go to Menorca again, but I would never stay at Sa Caleta again. There isn't enough to do and the apartments could be better!

Downside

The accommodation is small and not very clean, I cleaned it up myself after the maids had been. They generally left towels and sheets for us to deal with and left everthing else. I asked for clean sheets at reception on one occasion, I felt like I was asking to borrow the crown jewels!

Goodside

Its a friendly place with the beach right on your doorstep, there were a few jellyfish there but we liked watching them swim around. There is also a lifeguard who checks the water and puts up a flag to ensure safety of the swimmers. Saying that it is shallow and you can walk out for quite a bit before it deepens.

The view from the beach is beautiful, especially when the boats go past.

Sa Necra restaurant is a must to visit. Head towards Bettabuy, you can't miss it. The spanish jump from a board there into the sea, there are lots of fish to feed your possible left overs to.

Ocean, we went twice and didn't like it a lot. The prawns were not cooked on the paella and it was served as soon as we ordered it! The service is great but thats it,

Kowloon, Chinese Restaurant, avoid this at all cost, a women argued with the cook about her son being ill and needing hospital treatment. This was after we visited, we were OK but we laughed as we heard the microwave ding on several occasions.

Use the bus service to visit Ciutedella (?)We ate at Sa F (can't remenber the name). All meals were really nice and fresh, we had mussells and lived to tell the tale!

Went to Cal n Bosch, We ate at Bahia , really busy and hot, still it was a nice change as Sa Caleta is really quiet.

All in all, this was a great holiday and the location is ideal if you want a quiet base with cheap access to busier area's.

The Euro againt the pound is really poor, this reflected on the amount of money we spent during our 2 weeks stay. Sa Caleta Playa is really expensive to eat at, so go outside to other areas that are close by, they are brilliant.

WE HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM 2 WEEKS AT THIS RESORT AND WOULD RECCOMEND IT! IT WASNT THE CHEAPEST OF HOLIDAYS MIND YOU AS WE WERE A PARTY OF 11, 4 ADULTS AND 7 KIDS, AND AS WE HAD NO COOKING FACILITIES AS SUCH, WE ATE OUT EVERY NIGHT, WHICH WAS LOVELY, BUT MAY HAVE BEEN NICE TO HAVE THE CHOICE TO EAT IN SHOULD WE HAVE WISHED TO. THE APARTMENTS WHERE WE WERE SITUATED WERE PERFECT NOS 26+29, THE BEACH AND POOLS WERE IN SIGHT, BUT DISTANCED ENOUGH SO WE COULD KEEP OUR YOUNGER CHILDREN SAFE. THE ENTERTAINMENT COULD BE IMPROVED TO OFFER MORE VARIETY FROM ACTS BROUGHT INTO THE RESORT INSTEAD OF THE STAFF HAVING TO PROVIDE IT ALL DAY AND NIGHT! OUR KIDS LOVED THE DAYTIME ACTIVITIES THOUGH, WATERPOLO, FOOTBALL ETC, AND THE POOLS SEEMED TO KEEP THEM FROM GETTING BORED.

WE ATE OUT MAINLY AT 'THE OCEAN' WHICH WAS A LOVELY RESTAURANT 5 MIN WALK FROM THE COMPLEX BY THE BUS STOPS. THE STAFF WERE SO FRIENDLY AND KIND. EVERY TIME WE WENT THEY HAD TO REARRANGE THE SEATING TO FIT US ALL IN, BUT ALL WITH A SMILE, AND AS FOR THE FOOD, IT WAS FAULTLESS EVERY TIME, I DIDNT TRY IT PERSONALLY, BUT THE PAELLA WENT DOWN WELL!!

THE ROOMS THEMSELVES WERE A BIT SMALL, BUT WITH THE WEATHER AS IT WAS WE DIDNT WANT TO SPEND ANY TIME THERE OTHER THAN TO SLEEP ANYWAY, SO WASNT REALLY AN ISSUE.

THE STAFF ALL SEEMED OK, APART FROM THE MAIDS WHO WERE OBVIOUSLY NOT GETTING ALOT OF JOB SATISFACTION, AS THEY DIDNT SMILE OR TALK ALOT! BUT DID CHANGE THE TOWELS FREQUENTLY AND OFFER A CLEAN SO CANT MOAN TOO MUCH. WE DID HAVE TO 'BORROW' SOME TOILET ROLLS FROM THE LAUNDRY TROLLEY THOUGH AS THEY WERE NOT FREELY GIVEN OUT! THE FIRST CHOICE REP JANE WAS VERY NICE AND FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL WHEN IT CAME TO ANY QUERIES.

ALL IN ALL A GOOD HOLIDAY AND WOULDNT THINK TWICE ABOUT RECOMMENDING THE RESORT TO ANYONE.

Just returned from 2 weeks with my family and another family. The kids all took part in the games with Alberto and Lucy who have bags of endless energy and are a credit to themselves.

The accomodation was very basic but we didn't spend too much time there. We ate out everynight bar 3. We ate at the OCEAN which is oppersite the 'comercial' most nights and the food, service and friendlyness of the waiters made us go back 7 times.

We had a takeaway from Kowloons and it was awful. The chow mein was actually spagetti and the other dishes were unrecognisable.

We ate at the Lord Nelson twice. The food was very nice.

The maids were rather rude, and like one of the other reviewers said, there was a nasty smell coming from the mop!

We had to buy our own toilet roll as we are a family of 5 and 1 roll every 3 days IS NOT enough!

Its air conditioned during the day but that goes off at some point during the night so most nights around 4 we woke up frying.

The sun beds......hmmmm we were not prepared to get up at 6.30 to secure one so used the grassy area by the beach for the whole 2 weeks which was fine.

All in all we had a fab time as a holiday is what you make it . My only complaints would be the air con, the flimsy shower curtain and although we didn't care that we had no sun bed, to get to the pools we had to weave in and out of the tables and chairs in the restaurant area as the sunbeds line the access. Bit annoying when you have little ones.

Just got back from 2 week stay. Resort it self is beautiful, clean and friendly. apartments where clean and adequate. Toilet roll in short supply from cleaners though.

Kids entertainment done by Alberto and Poppy the clown was excellent and everyone seemed to get involved. Only had 2 decent nights of adult entertainment though.

Not alot of shops or bars etc, food at apartments was terrible and a few guests ended up poorly, service very poor. the Ocean eating place two minutes away was excellent and caters for children with bouncy castles, pool and the service there is excellent.

Appeared to be some trouble on a couple of occasions where people got there bags snatched,

police attended and staff very helpful.

First Choice reps delivered a first class service, nothing was to much trouble, cant praise them enough.

Overall very expensive wouldn't advise any one to stay at these apartments. Would return to Sa Calete but would steer well clear of here.

Beach -

Nice , lots of locals there . Clean water most of the time , limited sand though .

Rooms -

Tiny , and dirty the maids do nothing , they dont even put the toilet paper on the holders . towells and bed sheets were changed about twice of the whole two weeks we were there . the shower was also horrid and seemed dirty, you can fit 4 at most on the tiny balconys.

Pools & Sunbeds -

Sunbeds , unless you get up at 5 in the morning prepare to sit on the grass all day.

People left towels on beds all day then came at like 4 in the afternoon had 1 hour on the beds and went in.

Pools were really clean though fairplay and the slide was fun :)

Food -

Breakfast .

Terrible , espically kids breakfast . most mornings i didnt bother to get up for it.

Dinner.

Slowest serivice ever , one night it took 2 hours food to arrive.

Limited choice

Im 14 and my brothers 16 and we were on childrens meals , yet we could get served for alcohol behind the bar , so basically you can have chicken nuggets and chips but on the plus side you can have a pint with it :) , bring your own drinks though , the hotels staff even advised us to do this.

everything is with chips , i dont eat chips at home much so having to eat them everyday for 14 days has turned me off for life .

Entertainment -

Alberto made the holiday , and his partner lucy where great .

The 3 kids club reps Haley , Laura and Moira where also very good , and the kids adored them. they were always smiley , and answered all my questions :D

Entertainment on a whole was very good , day & night.

Menorca on a whole is a really expensive place ! , there isnt much in sa caleta either but bus rides to cala'n bosch and ciuadella are fairly cheap and theres many shops and entertainment there. its a lovely place , and the hotel could be amazing but the food and service ruined it .

First choice where an awful company to fly with , my brother had to have stiches and tehy sent us to a private clinic so we cant claim the money back on our insurance now !

the reps wernt much help , they did hardly anything which was dissapointing.

The airoplane we flew on was so repulsive i was alsmost sick , it was dirty , cramped and stunk . The only thing First Choice can do right is hire Childrens entertainers.

Also be careful with your stuff , a number of things went missing of ours from by the pool . One day my firend had her bag stolen with a camera,iRiver,150 euros and numerous bits and bobs in it . spanish boys took it but the manitience man ' found' the camera , he told us he found it in a bush yet he told the poilce a boy drove up on a yellow moped give it too him and sped off before he could say anything.

Also the hotel were refusing to get the police involved because of the reputation of the hotel ! , we had a scream at them before they gave in !!!!
