I took my sister to Tenerife for a...
1 / 10
Aug 2006, Miss A Welsh

I took my sister to Tenerife for a holiday as a birthday present with my boyfriend. When we first arrived at the hotel we thought oh this looks nice but after a while it wasn’t as good as it seemed.
We had an ant problem in our room and at the pool one day a boys hair turned green!!! Yes completely GREEN!!!!
There were other things like groups of young people being charged money to stay at the hotel which they were not told they would have to pay by the tour operator and then for silly things like going in the pool at night or making noise being sent to another hotel.
The receptionists were very rude and on the day we were leaving we put our bags in a supposedly secure room where my boyfriend wallet was stolen and handed in by a cleaner who had supposedly found it empty outside a lift we hadn’t used.
We asked if she had taken it from the room and they said they would call the police if we tried to accuse the hotel. They refused to phone the police for us however to try and get someone to help us find out what had happened.
We believe it was an inside job as the receptionist laughed at us and people in other rooms had been broken into and everything stolen. Would never go back and think anyone who does is mad!

8 / 10
Aug 2006, Miss Hannah, Kirstie, Emma, Brodie, Leanne, Cavers.

Went as a group, receptionist was very rude on several occasions but other staff were all pleasant, apartments easy enough to find- they are all colour coded so make sure you have both the right colour and number!
Rooms good enough size and clean, balcony was huge and perfect for sitting out before going out! Nicely decorated, 2 large pools very nice, 1 baby pool, plenty sun loungers- weather can be very hot so be careful!
Beach 10 mins walk from apartments, few shops, restaurants and supermarkets (drink is very cheap!) around the area, apartments next to a sky park, wasn't open when we were there but looked great fun! Aqua park 5 mins taxi ride a good day out!
Nightlife in the veronicas area about 5 mins taxi ride from apartments, costs around 7 euros depending on time you go out- clubs were excellent we would recommend bobby's, Linekers and tramps- watch out for PRs although they are only doing their job it can get annoying so just walk away if you do not want to go into their pub/club.
Nice restaurants in veronica area recommend the royal gardens on the front- food was superb and we got a huge free cocktail, good prices mostly everywhere!
Overall super holiday and we would definitely go back to Playa Olid, preferably in late June when the weather is just right and its busy enough!

The apartment was a complete joke....
3 / 10
Aug 2006, Mr Bowen

The apartment was a complete joke. The cleaners only did a half job because they did not sweep the floors or make beds or make an effort to take pride in their work.
The reception staff were unfriendly and not motivated at all. The supermarket was very expensive compared with others in the area and didn't have a wide range of products.
There was a cockroach infestation in our room and we were unsatisfied with the level of attention we got over the issue. The pool was overcrowded and there was no shade which is not very helpful for families with small children. I think the resort resembled a prison rather than a family hotel.

I stayed at this apartment complex...
5 / 10
Aug 2006, Mrs D Matthews

I stayed at this apartment complex for 10 days with my husband, son and my son's friend (both 15).
I would definitely not return. Certainly not one of the best places I have ever stayed.
The noise was constant - doors banging - loud music - people arguing. Quite a few sleepless nights. There were quite a few people thrown out during our stay or fined for making a noise.
The bar staff were friendly but I found the reception staff ignored you for about 10 minutes before taking any notice of you standing at the reception desk.
We woke up one morning with bugs all over the room - they had hatched out of the armchair during the night!!
The rooms were spacious and clean and there was a large balcony. I didn't like the area where the complex was situated - not the most attractive area on the resort.
There were quite a few break-ins during our stay and I had read about this on another review site - people waking up during the night to find people in their room - no evidence of break ins!! We resorted to putting things in front of the doors during the night in case anyone tried to get in.
There were also no parasols round the pool - only those over the tables at the pool bar. As it was absolutely boiling whilst we were there I couldn't sit round the pool for too long because of this - we spent most of our time at the beach anyway and we had a car so visited different beaches during our stay.
I can't say that I particularly liked Tenerife - not a pretty island although we did drive over the mountains and past the volcano where the scenery is stunning - Port de la Cruz is also worth a visit. I did enjoy some of the holiday, it was a break but don't think I'd want to return.

Jul 2006, Mr Rob McSharry

Had a Great time and staff were extremely helpful. Large clean apartments with easy access. The only thing that let the holiday down was some of the people staying there shouting and screaming between 3 - 4 - 5am every morning but that could happen anywhere don’t let it put you off we would still stay there again.
The highlight of the holiday was the Scuba Diving, every week you will find a scuba instructor called Steve (Yes "Scuba Steve") walking around the pool asking if anyone is interested in trying scuba diving. We decided to do our Padi open water course with Steve as we had both tried it before but never had any real training.
Most people obviously go on holiday to chill out and relax around the pool, which for me is great for about 4 hours but then I get bored and need something else to do. If anyone is interested in doing something different, exciting and new then I can highly recommend Scuba diving especially with Ocean Divers.
I must also add that Steve is a great teacher and has the patience of a saint..... quite possibly one of the nicest people you will ever meet.

It was brilliant. The apartment was...
9 / 10
Jul 2006, Miss L Siddiqui

It was brilliant. The apartment was lovely, and was really big. The pool was nice, although people do go down really early to put their towels down, but there is a really lovely beach close by.
The staff are friendly and there is a 24 hour supermarket 3 minutes away which is cheaper then the hotels food shop. The hotel had families couples and small groups so it is lively but doesn’t get too loud. At night there is a 60 euro fine if you make too much noise after 12. Everything was really clean. Don’t pay for the taxi service to the airport because its a con and you have to pay the taxi driver as well.
Playa de las Americas is really touristy so its not ideal for anyone who wants culture. but for 17-25 year olds its fantastic as there are loads of clubs which are about a £5 taxi ride away from the hotel, although I think you can get a bus, they do deals like 5 euros for 3 drinks and 2 free shots, you should find a rep for the club you want to go to.
Rags and Tramps are by far the best places. If you get sea sick do not go on the boat to see the dolphins because 90% of people got ill, unless your really into them its not really worth the money you have to pay.

Had a fantastic time at the Playa Olid, the apartments were really big and very clean and it was a really nice complex. I took my two children and they loved it, would recommended to people with families or without. Would definitely go back.
Aqua land is a superb day out and its only a short walk away. If you like Chinese food try lotus gardens its gorgeous but please stay away from one called china city not nice at all. The beaches are beautiful and the sites are amazing 5*.

Fantastic hotel, with extremely big...

May 2006, Miss S McDonnell

Fantastic hotel, with extremely big rooms. Separate lounge/kitchen equipped with dinning table chairs etc. Bedroom really big with large built in wardrobes. Staff very friendly and polite (especially night reception staff) Brilliantly cleaned.
Location from beach about 10 minutes walk and their is a a beautiful private beach about 20 minutes walk away. Hotel is far from main nightlife but only cost $6 euros in a taxi to Playa De Las Americas. Local bars nearby but mainly this hotel is situated in a quite area that is very peaceful.
No trouble or loud noises. Loads of supermarkets nearby and generally an exellent hotel package.

Had a fantastic time and staff were extremely helpful. Large clean apartments with easy access.
Flights delayed 1 hour each way but did not spoil our stay. Three pools for all ages with well equipped bars. 5 minute walk to the nearest taverna and 10 - 15 minute to the beach. Well situated and fantastic views of the mountains from the front.
So good, we’re booking again for next year.

Oct 2004, Miss M Reid

These appartments are really good, the staff are really friendly and also are there at your every need for anything, all you need to ask for something.
They have two good sized pools and there are fresh water so no nasty taste in your mouth. Have a well stocked shopping centre and also a 24 hour one over the road also have internet access.
You can choose either eat self catering or they have an on site restaurant that also provides take away. Have been to these appartments for 3 years and never had any trouble and also never seen any roaches in the appartments.
A++++++top appartments the pools are also safe for children they have there own wee bit esp.

Jun 2004, K A Morgan

I loved staying in this hotel it was always clean and tidy and we never had a problem while we were there!!! The staff were always friendly and willing to help (I should know I lost my travellers cheques somewhere between the airport and the hotel, they were more than helpful with fax’s etc).
It was late when we arrived but the staff were still cheerful and faultless however we couldn’t really find anywhere to eat and we didn’t want to go to far! If your looking for a holiday which allows you to both relax but enter the lively side at times i would recommend this resort and this hotel!

I chose Tenerife as my holiday...
7 / 10
Jun 2004, cchrist1

I chose Tenerife as my holiday destination this year because I knew it was guaranteed sunshine and hot weather. This holiday was our first package holiday and I can say now that I will never take one again...it may be more expensive to book the flight and hotel separately but its worth it in the end!
Costa Adeje is an extension of the Playa Las Americas resort and about a five-ten minute drive away from all the nightclubs. The resort is split into an expensive area and a cheap area, if you have a bit more cash, go for the expensive area. The restaurants in the area were fairly good, especially the Aberdeen Steakhouse, but you should be careful which ones you choose. Don’t let the waiters standing outside pull you in, they can be aggressive as they get a commission for every tourist they sit at the dinner table.
It is my recommendation that you do not do a self-catering holiday, unless you want to pay extortionate prices (i.e. can of tuna 2 Euros and 80 cents) for food as everything has to be imported to the Island.
If you are staying for 7-14 days it is wise to budget for a rent a car, as Playa Las Americas is purely just beaches, nightclubs and restaurants. None of the residents of Tenerife actually live in the south, they all live in the North so if you want to see what Tenerife is really about, driving is the way to go. Upon arrival at the airport you can pick up maps of Tenerife, which have excellent scenic driving routes, which take you from the Atlantic all the way up into the mountains. The best scenic routes were to Masca and to Mt. Teide, both breathtaking and death defying. (Note: Make sure that the car you are given is in good condition and good working order as the scenic routes have a lot of hairpin turns, ascents and descents).
Top places in Tenerife to drive to are:
1) Puerto de la Cruz
This is the second largest tourist destination in Tenerife, situated on the west coast of the Island, it is much more posh looking and cleaner than Playa Las Americas. It also boasts a fantastic park called Loro Parque. The park has dolphin, parrot and sea lion shows, an excellent penguin exhibition, two gorillas and much more. The park itself is a sanctuary for more than 3,000 endangered species of parrot and all park entry fees go towards the taking care of the parrots. It is a bit pricey but it is most definitely worth it!
2)La Orotava
This is a very beautiful area along the scenic route with loads of Banana trees.
3)Los Gigantes
This is a very quaint fishing village just down the coast from Puerto de la Cruz. There are loads of volcanic rocks surrounding the oceanfront from the time when Mt. Teide last exploded (1800s) and since then, they have become rock pools where the locals go to sunbathe. There is also an excellent selection of seafood at the seafront restaurants at local prices...you should try the octopus!
4)Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz is the capital city of Tenerife. Just after the entrance into the city is a fantastic park with three clear water pools that are pumped directly from the ocean. All the locals come here to sunbathe on the weekends, so the best time to go is during the week when its next to empty.
If you do not have the option of getting a car, you might want to consider getting a moped/scooter so that you can get around the resort itself. Remember that Playa Las Americas and Los Cristianos are definitely not walking distance from Costa Adeje!
Pros and Cons of Costa Adeje and Playa Las Americas:
Pro:
One of the best places in Costa Adeje is Aquapark, which is a large waterslide park that is excellent for families and 20-somethings alike. Fast slides and hot sun make it an excellent day out.
Con:
It is most encouraged that before booking your holiday or hotel that you check that there is air conditioning in your room. At night, temperatures remain at 25 degrees Celsius at least! Furthermore, if you cannot get air conditioning you might want to consider buying an electric fan from a shop outside of the resort as the hotels will charge you 100 Euros for a week!
Con:
The dolphin watching excursions are not worth your hard earned cash! If you want to see dolphins, go to either Aquapark or Loro Parque. You should remember that the wild dolphins only live in the North of Tenerife so, you will be paying 80 Euros to see nothing!
Pro:
The whale watching excursions are worth the money but it is recommended to go on a boat with fewer people as the whales get scared from the noise of all those chatters and pumping hip hop playing in the background. The boats offering a buffet lunch just aren’t worth it unless you really want to pay 80 Euros for half a baguette and a slice of cold pizza.
In conclusion, Tenerife is a nice place to visit, but you will find that you will not want to go back again (unless you just like lying on the beach all the time). Instead of staying at a resort in the south, consider staying in the North as it is much greener and much much cheaper - and the beaches are amazing! All in all, a full week should be more than enough time for you to see everything at an easy pace...two weeks is much too long to be bathing in a sun that is at the same latitude as the Sahara.
