We went to Chicago in April 2005 and are currently saving to go back we loved it so much. We got a great deal through Expedia to stay two weeks in the "4 star" Palmer House Hilton in The Loop (Chicago's Financial District). There are quite a lot of bad reviews about this hotel but to be honest, we were happy with it. The room had everything we needed and was very clean. Sometimes coffee/tea wasn't restocked on a daily basis but I'm sure this would have been rectified if we had highlighted it to staff.
The hotel itself is in a great location and just a short walk to the main shopping district, the Magnificent Mile. Some people again have reviewed The Loop as a dangerous area at night as its very quiet but we had no trouble at all, walking to and from the hotel at any hour of the day or night. Beggars are pretty rife in this area as in most of Chicago but mainly they are very polite though one or two find it hard to accept "no" as an answer. Just be firm in your response if you do not want to give any money.
Internet access is quite hard to come by believe it or not and I wouldn't recommend using the "in room" service. Its expensive and more often than not didn't work. We found a little second hand book shop that offers rates per 15 minutes.
The best way to see Chicago is on foot - we discovered loads of little hidden treasure though The El (The overhead metro system) is also a great way of getting around and we found it to be easy to use, reliable and cheap.
I'd stay in this hotel again if got a really good deal and would recommend it as a good base for a first time visitor as all the main attractions (Sears Tower, John Hancock Centre etc) are all easily reached on foot.

This hotel is clean and in the process of being refurbished in the Grand main lobby, but not too disruptive to deter from the elegant nature of the hotel as a whole.
I stayed in Chicago for the weekend over the period that the Looptopia art festival was on and it was amazing, the hotel is in a great location for the 5 dollar tube ride from O’Hare airport.
Also very close to the main bus and train lines to get around, but I actually found walking was a lot more interesting as it is only 1 mile to the end of the magnificent mile and just 2 blocks from millennium park.
The area around the hotel is safe enough to walk around at night, and apart from the one night of the looptopia festival where people were out until 5am, including myself.
The rest of the time I am told by the local university group I met that the loop is relatively deserted of people after dark, as the main clubbing area is about 6 blocks to the north across the river.
The hotel overall was very good sized room and clean. Great coffee maker in the room with iron and large TV as usual. Also has complimentary Crabtree and Evelyn soaps and shampoos in the room. Staff are helpful enough for my liking.
Overall if you are looking for a great location for your first time in Chicago and love to roam the city to get a real feel for the place, then this would be a great recommendation for that.
