Sorrento is an interesting little tourist town, which though beautiful, is overrun by the type of tourists who don't like to partake of any local culture. Nevertheless, Sorrento's plus points outweigh the bad; it is a quaint little town, with excellent (and cheap) access to... more

"Il Nido" Hotel -- great rates and best food in Sorrento
We have just returned from a month in Italy. As interesting as the Mediterrainean 10 day cruise was with Holland America, and as interesting as Venice & Rome were, the highlight of our trip was at the Il Nido Hotel and Restaurant in Sorrento. I say this because we had easy access to the famous tourist spots (Pompeii, the Amalfi coast, Capri, Ana Capri, Naples and Vesuvius) all of which were within 20 k of the hotel. The "Il Nido" is family run and had very competitively low rates with breakfast included, as well as the best dinner food we had eaten anywhere in Italy & at a reasonable cost. We managed to get back to the Hotel every one of the seven nights we were there for dinner which is a first because we usually seek out various restaurants while vacationing. The Hotel provided a free shuttle bus which ran into the center of Sorrento and back most of the day which allowed us to park our car at the hotel for most of the week. They also had two computer terminals for access to the internet which was also available at no cost and was available from 8am to 11 pm. This part of the vacation was our best stop because the family running the hotel were very helpful with anything we required from batteries for our camera to information about the attractions and how to get to them. It is our intention to return to this hotel in May of 2007 to once again enjoy the hotel, food and attractions. We felt we were treated as family and being far away from Toronto, Ontario Canada this made our stay that much more enjoyable. Thanks! George & Kathy Campbell
Loved it!
We stayed at Il Nido and absolutely loved it. The million dollar view is just outstanding and the accommodation, while not luxurious, is comfortable. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the restaurant became one of our favorites...delicious dinners at reasonable prices. The shuttle up the winding 5 km road from the town, which may seem an inconvenience at first glance, worked very well for us and gave us the opportunity to meet the other guests and compare notes. It was sometimes a relief to leave the crowded and noisy downtown Sorrento for the peace and quiet of Il Nido. We would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to friends.
Yes please!
We visited in April 2005 for a couple of nights and stayed on for longer. Forget the whingers, all the positive things the other Reviewers have said about Il Nido are true. This is an excellent value for money establishment, something that is not always easy to find in Italy. The staff are professional without being obsequious. No quibbles from us, we will certainly go back
It's not Just the View
The Il Nido is the hotel of the budget traveler's dreams! It is isolated, but the shuttle runs non-stop all day and well into the night. The food is absolutely delicious. The rooftop at night may be the most romantic place I've ever set foot. The staff bends over backwards to make sure you have everything you could possibly need. And they have a turtle in the coffee shop. What more could you ask for?
Spectacular View
My husband and I stayed at his hotel in March of 2004. I should have written this review prior to now. The hotel is not in the city. It is up on the hill. The hotel does provide for bus transportation. We found this hotel to be wonderful. Our room was very large and clean. The bed and the pillows were not the best. They do need to upgrade those items. Also, their bath towels are not towels. They are linens that my grandmother used as tea towels. They need to get nice thick bath towels! The view is spectacular. We were there during a thunder/lightning storm and enjoyed watching the show displayed by Mother Nature after nightfall. The food in the restaurant is okay. Not the best but okay...the view from the restaurant is nice so the ambience and food is better enjoyed. The staff works very hard. We were able to enjoy our days in town calling for a ride back to town after dinner or day of shopping. We traveled easily to Capri and Pompeii. One day we took a private tour of the Amalfi coast from a wonderful gentleman by the name of Aldo. He had a Mercedes mini van and took us to Positano and all along the coast. We spent 8 hrs traveling around the coastal areas. It was beautiful and the highlight of our trip. I do hope that the hotel can help you find Aldo because it's worth the money. I would recommend the Il Nido to my family and friends. The view is definitely one of a kind!
Million dollar view at Il Nido
We stayed at Il Nido in September and felt that Sorrento and the hotel were highlights of our trip. The location out of town was not an inconvenience for us and we liked being driven to the train or bus or town. We got to the hotel, parked the car and never moved it until we left. We easily visited Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Amalfi Coast and Capri. We enjoyed the town but were happy to return to the peace and quiet of Il Nido. One of our party had difficulty walking and the bus picked him up down the hill from the meeting spot for his convenience. Views of the Bay of Naples from our room and the dining terrace were spectacular. At night there were fireworks in the distance celebrating a saint's day. We are anxious to return to the area and would again stay at Il Nido.
Spectacular views !!
Il Nido is situated on a hill perhaps 5Km from Sorrento along a windy steep road which means that you are pretty reliant on the hotel shuttle bus, or the local bus service, 2 minutes walk uphill. It's position means that it has some of the most spectacular views of the bay of Naples. It's a very romantic place to look across the bay at night and enjoy a bottle of chianti. The accommodation itself is quite basic and could probably do with a bit of a face lift. The higher up rooms tend to be better than those lower down, which are a bit drab. The staff were all very friendly, and dinner was enjoyable, particularly with the great views. There is a good terrace for lying out and catching some rays. The little pool is nice for a dip to cool down. The hotels in Sorrento may be of slightly higher quality, though certainly lack the ambiance of Il Nido. I would highly recommend Il Nido to anyone that appreciates tranquility and beautiful scenery, though if you want maximum comfort and independence of the bus service, you might prefer to stay in Sorrento.
A nice place!
Il Nido is a real find. The rooms are clean. Staying outside of the city has its advantages and disadvantages. The restaurant was good. Breakfast was a treat. Desk people were friendly
great value
Il Nido is a little gem of a hotel in Amalfi. It is a small family run hotel right outside the town. The hotel is right on the water. We had a lovely room with a small balcony, the rooms are simple and neat with large modern bathrooms. The staff is very friendly, ther is a safe parking garage which is a huge bonus. Breakfast is standard fare, great coffee served in a pretty room overlooking the water. The hotel has a rooftop deck. It is an wasy 15 minute walk downhill into the town alittle more strenuous back uphill to return. For the price this hitel is amazing, definitely stay here!
terrible location
I agree with the wonderful comments but this hotel is way out of the town center, not walkable to anything. Must rely on the shuttle, bus or cab (a 25 euro ride from train station) so just be aware of this drawback.
