Asterias Beach Hotel Reviews
" 1st time to Rhodes "
Submitted By: Phil voseAs the days went by we were found craving hot food which Mikes bar[200 mts away] provided. Traditional greek bar, very friendly.
Hotel its self v.clean, fresh towells and sheets everyday.pool great and could'nt find fault with the drinks, barman friendly.
We booked the hotel knowing that it was family run and quiet so in that respect we were not dissapointed [planes were not a problem].Did'nt do much sightseeing apart from a day trip to Rhodes which is a must.We were quite happy around the pool. the beach however was very dissapointing compared to other greek islands we've visited.Very rustic and abandond to say the least. Overall 7 days were enough[could'nt imagine 14 though]Caters for all age groups, worth a visit
Advice: Very quiet resort if thats what you're looking for
Activities: Mikes bar, a must, 200mts from hotel. Rhodes town superb, well worth a visit

" Asterias Hotel "
Submitted By: nickandkatIt was small and relatively quiet which is what we were hoping for. The rooms were cleaned daily and the staff were all very friendly, particularly the lovely bar man who bore more than a passing resemblance to Patrick Swayze. My husband and I were looking for a nice base from which to explore the island and it was perfect for this. The food was very fresh, breakfast was the weakest part but lunch and dinner were great. There is not a huge variety but the hotel is small and it would not be cost effective for them, the Feta was the best I have ever tasted. We are early 30's and met some really lovely people who we shared the free (AI) bar with. The all inclusive drinks did finish at 10pm which we did feel was a bit early but meant that we were up feeling fresh in the morning. The pool is also worth a mention as it was fantastic, massive and well maintained.
Aeroplanes - it is under a flight path and you will get some plane noise. Sunday was the busiest time the rest of the week was quiet with a couple of flights in the morning and evening. It is not so close that the noise is loud and I am terrified of flying and it did not alter my enjoyment at all.
Good for: Beach

Submitted By: Miss J TylerThe food we could not fault, there was always plenty of good quality homemade greek food. I being a very fussy eater was worried from other reviews that i wouldnt be able to eat anything... however i never failed to clear my plate. There was always a pasta option, and a potatoe, meat and veg combo, also a refrigerated salad bar that had a door (so no insects could get in) George the bar man (or fabio as we opted to call him) was lovely, up for a chat and a also a great tour guide of the island iwith his recommendations.
Te only reason i haven't rated the hotel as a 10/10 is because it is quite 'out of it' and you have to have a mode of transport, either bus or rented to get anywhere. I would highly recommend hiring a car and seeing the south end of the island which was beautiful.
Me and my partner, if ever visiting Rhodes again, will be staying at the asterias again.

Submitted By: Miss F ChatburnWhilst the hotel was nice and the staff were friendly, the lack of anything to do was rather off putting. As an all-inclusive hotel there was no evening entertainment, the ice-cream for children was only available during the afternoon snack-time and the free drinks didnt start until 11.15am (by which time everyone seemed to have melted in the hot weather and all had the same idea to get a drink as soon as we could for free )!!!
We did find though that the food was nice and always enough of it, so much so that anything left over, appeared to be made into something else, especially the pasta and rice.
The rooms were adequate and had a baloncy. The air conditioning was in the hotel but had to be paid for if required in the bedrooms (7euros a day).
The picture of the pool that is shown is definately not the one at the hotel, but was still nice and had sunbeds around the edge.
If you go to the beach, wearing beach sandals would be a good idea as the beach is very pebbly and are a good help getting in and out of the sea as the beach drops off quite sharply and when trying to get out the waves receeding have quite a strong pull to them.
Although near to the airport the planes werent really that bad and didnt fly all day, usually morning and evening and become less noticeable during the stay. One thing leaving during the day was that we were able to see the hotel from the plane and wish we were still there rather than going home.
The bus to Rhodes took about 40mins and cost 2.5 euros each and run regularly.
As Tholos doesnt have much other than the main road a trip to Dundees, an Australian bar/restaurant was a good eveing out, ( turn right at the main road and walk for about 10mins) there are various other bars & shops along the road which also are good.
overall we had a good time and would go back.

Submitted By: Miss D BurlinghamThe hotel staff were really nice, especially the barman on the outside bar. He was very polite and welcoming.
The rooms were spotless and always cleaned and we even had a nice balcony overlooking the sea. Mosquito nets were also provided.
It seems that everyone seemed to have a problem with the food. As we only went B&B, I can’t really comment upon that but from what I saw, the food was always covered and prepared nicely. I must admit that there was not much choice of food when breakfast was served but the food at the hotel bar made up for that.
Drinks were cheap and cheerful and the pool was always clean.
I personally loved Rhodes and am planning to go back to Asterias next year for another holiday.

Submitted By: G SingletonI think one of the previous reviews about the hotel suggested that the food was uncovered - this wasn't the case during our stay. The hot food was served from a hot cabinet and the cold from a covered refrigerated cabinet. Hot drinks were available all day from an efficient vending machine. The food certainly wasn't a highlight, but there was plenty of it and there was some choice available.
Another review suggested that the all-inclusive deal was limited. I would agree with this. I don't think that the hotel was adequately geared to cope with all-inclusive. The hotel is very small and so they cannot benefit from the economies of scale that the bigger hotels benefit from. The meals were recycled regularly and the snacks/drinks became tighter as the week progressed. This was performed in a way thats a little too obvious!
The location isn't perfect. The beach is rather grey, stony and littered. The airport is so close the planes are very noisy and are a nuisance day and night. The resort is lovely and quiet, just a couple of lively bars for the party makers and a couple of small taverna style venues. However, the impact of the all inclusive holiday seems to be sending the local small business into decline as some places were closed down and the remainder struggling.
Hotel:10, Location: 6.5/10.

Submitted By: Mrs P HarperWe had a balcony overlooking the sea and net screens at the windows to keep out the mosquitoes (very welcome). There are two bars, one inside with a very comfortable lounge area and another outside by the pool.
The food in the dining area was covered at all times in cabinets. We were half board and there was a good selection of food, nothing fancy but wholesome.
After reading the other report I can only assume things have changed for the better as we really enjoyed our stay. If you enjoy watching planes Tholos is the place for you.
We didn't mind the noise but it could upset some sensitive folk. I gave the hotel 7 out of 10 but if in a different location would have given 10.

Submitted By: Mr L McCormackThe hotel was clean and resonably well maintained.
The food was mainly Greek and little choice but quite good, dessert for 11 of the 14 nights that we spent there was melon!.
There was no protection for the food from the local insect life, and being a tad finnicky this put me off the cold selection.
However, the real problem with a hotel of this size (about 36 rooms) is that they are really not geared up for AI, and are looking to pinch every available penny, which though understandable, shouldn't be made so obvious!!.
I can only blame the tour operators that sell these people the benefits(?) of AI business for this sorry situation. You are driving these people out of business!. We for instance, would not dream of returning to this hotel nor would we recommend it to anyone.
When we arrived at the hotel there was a notice on the notice board that detailed the AI guests entitlements, this disappeared very quickly and did not re-appear. These written entitlements included, afternoon tea, icecream for the children and cocktails among other things that were subsequently conspicuously absent.
We did not feel at any time during the our stay that we were made welcome, at best, we were tolerated at worst resented.
There were too many examples of the ludicrous way in which the management behaved, to go into too much detail, but one of the most hilarious, was the way that the drinks glasses diminished in size over the two weeks i.e. 330ml glasses during the first week, (and the head on the lager got bigger and bigger as the week went by), to 250ml glasses in the second week and the head on the lager ditto.
The between meals coffee was served direct from a Thermos (yuk!), and a barman cut his hand when trying to get (even more!!) ice into a drinking glass, to make sure that the actual amount of cola was kept to a minimum - pathetic. The bar staff patently ignored us and served the "paying" guests in preference.
We were present when an AI guest, was requested to provide evidence in the form of a drained glass, before he would be served with another drink (EH?).
The "paying" guests on the other hand were provided with a service level that bordered on fawning.
On the positive side Rhodes old town is very lovely and only a 2 euro bus-ride away from Tholos, the and the weather was awesome.

all i ate was salad for breakfast, salad for lunch and salad for tea.
no toast, no cooked breakfasts of any kind, if you like cucumbers and tomatos, olives and feta cheese for your breakfast then your ok.
the bar opened at 11.15 but only for light beers and soft drinks, shorts and wines were after 6.30 and stopped at 10pm, but if you didnt get ure last drink before 9.55 she wouldnt serve you. there is no entertainment at all just horrible music, most of the time i ate out, i couldnt believe the amount of money i had to spend eating out it was rediculous.
aircon was 7 euros per night,no safe you had to pay for a draw in a locker in the reception, which cost me 15 euros,no kettle or anything to make a drink with either.
if yoy wanted cappacino or latte you had to pay for it,fruit juice on a morning was powder with water in it. never in my life have been to a all inclusive hotel like this one.i would never advise anyone to go there all in as you would be wasting your money.
also plains every 20 mins day and night it sent you crazy, not peaceful at all.
Advice: the weathers very nice
Activities: old rhodes town, mikes restaurent, hes lovely.
