Beaches Hotel Reviews

Aug 2008, Miss A Jones

I recently booked a room at The Beaches Hotel, Beach Road West, Prestatyn for the night of my wedding. I telephoned to make the booking and the receptionist told me I would have the Honeymoon Suite for the night at a cost of £125.00. When I called in to pay the deposit... more

More like a residential care home for the elderly
We have just returned from a one night stay at the Beaches Hotel in Prestatyn. What a disappointment. The hotel itself is in a nice position - right on the beach and considering this is a deprived part of the UK it looked reasonable. If you like being referred to as 'love' etc then you may think this place is OK but we found the staff to be far short of professional which is a shame as the owners have obviously tried to make the best of the interior. Our room overlooking the sea (great view) but very small room. No handset for the TV - very negative response from reception when we asked for one but it did finally arrive. (this could have been handled in a much better way). Whilst the room was clean there was something nasty that kept floating back up into the loo from a previous occupant we guessed (nasty!). If you have breakfast in your room there is a £5 charge which we didn't think was very clear. The breakfast was edible but very basic. The place didn't have the feel of a hotel but of an old peoples care home. Wouldn't recommend stay somewhere out of the town and travel in if you have to!!
The terrible service ruined the nice setting.
We are 2 couples and booked 2 rooms for one night and they booked us as 1 room for 2 nights - they put the other couple travelling with us in the little studio flats opposite the hotel, which was more like a council estate. The view of the sea was nice, the hotel was clean and comfortable, and the swimming pool was quite good. For breakfast, they ALSO messed up our 'booking' (which was included in the price but apparently we needed to have an allocated table in what was an otherwise empty restaurant) and made a BIG fuzz about where we could sit down, and didn't let us sit by the sea, even though another family got in after us, sat there and happily had breakfast. For what it was, it was overpriced and the service was very disappointing. Wouldn't go back.
Makes Fawlty Towers look like the Ritz
My husband and I decided to have a romantic night away, what a mistake it was in choosing this hotel. I wouldn't have given it a 1 star rating, let alone the 3 it has. The room, whilst clean, was to say the least, pokey. A double room with 1 easy chair!!!!! Not enough room to swing a cat in. Now to my main gripe, the food or rather lack of it. We started the evening with a drink or two, as you would, expecting to sit down and have a 3 course meal. The Table D'Hote menu is not what you may expect, being offered a selection of soup, melon or fruit juice, followed by chicken in white wine or curry or some other, easily forgotten choice, followed by ice cream. We instead opted for the A La Carte. 57 minutes after ordering our starters, they arrived - edible was the only way to describe the mushrooms in garlic and white wine sauce. The mushrooms were chopped so finely and so sparse, the best way to describe it would have been mushroom soup - I had to use a spoon to eat it, a fork would have proved a futile exercise. On to the main - I ordered the Mixed Grill, asking for the steak to be cooked medium rare. Plate arrived - no steak!. Sent it back and asked for it to be freshly prepared - not unreasonable. Plate arrived back in less than 10 minutes, which set my alarm bells ringing. Steak was cooked beautifully, however, the lamb chop was cooked on the outside and raw in the middle as was the gammon. I called over the Restaurant Manager and sent the food back, he never even bothered to ask if I wanted a replacement meal. Now bear in mind this is now 9pm and I have had a few wines, and am therefore unable to drive to find food elsewhere. We were told the problems arose because 3 chefs had an evening wedding function, a party of 17 and 11 other guests dining!!!!! Blimey, I could manage better in my own home. 1 chef should have been able to see to 28 dinner meals without getting them so wrong. But more to the point, I neither want to know, nor care, how busy the chefs are, they are getting paid to do the job, I am paying not to!!!!! Why should a party of 17 take preference over anybody else. Is my money not good enough?!!!!!!! Now surely, I mistakenly thought, that they couldn't get breakfast wrong. Fruit Juice and cereal were fine - well they do come out of a packet and the chef didn't have to touch them! A full cooked Welsh Breakfast and toast - after my experience the night before, my stomach was more than ready for this delight. My stomach was left feeling rather lonely and my brain was addled at how wrong they could get the offering they called a Welsh Breakfast. The plate consisted of 1 sausage, 1 piece of back bacon, 1 fried egg (yolk was hard), 1 hash brown and the biggest pile of baked beans I have ever seen on a plate. Hardly what I would call a Welsh Breakfast, made even worse by the fact that everything was luke warm and the toast was cold. To be fair the Hotel Manageress did refund our money for the meals, however, 4 days on and I am still waiting for a written reply from the owners of this property. So if you want to pay for overrated accommodation and luke warm undercooked food - this is the place for you. If, like most people, you don't - then look for somewhere else.
Fabulous Hotel
Stayed for 2 days in March and can not possibly fault anything about this Hotel. The staff were the most friendly people I have met in a long time on my travels. Had dinner on both nights in the downstairs restaurant and found the food to be of top quality. Loved the decor of the downstairs restaurant also. Everywhere was spotlessly clean the reception area, the downstairs bar and most of all my bedroom and ensuite. You were even left a small pack of biscuits in the bedroom to enjoy with your cuppa after a long stroll on the sandy beach. The main town was a 15 - 20 minute walk from the Hotel but this I seen as good excercise and a way to enjoy the fresh air. Would recommend a visit to this Hotel if you're planning on visiting the North of Wales. Gets my vote anytime!!
Beautiful Beaches
My wife and I are getting ready to go to the Beaches Hotel for the second time this year and no doubt will book for a third visit whilst there (and the fourth visit after that!). Our stay in Mid January was delightful and since there were not many guests we enjoyed a most cosseted stay. The food was excellent and the service, arguably, unquestionable. In spite of being well past retirement age we feel like children with the excitement of going there. We ask for nothing more than the attention we are always given plus the delightful outlook of the hotel. The vast refurbishments that have taken place (which we have witnessed for some time) have, of course, improved the enjoyment and comfort of the hotel but have never interferred with the smooth running of the operations - we have even become friends with the builders! It is difficult to find fault with this hotel - we don't even try.
Disappointed
We were expecting a good standard hotel , with lunch and dinner available. The bar was closed all day we couldn't even get a drink. The meals were served in the downstairs bar and when we were trying to have a quiet drink in the evening the barman was noisily laying tables for breakfast and I mean noisily , other guests were looking and raising their eyebrows, so much so that I think we all left the bar by 9pm as we felt unwelcome. Access to the promenade was padlocked, even though it was February the weather was mild and it would have been nice to be able to get outside and have fresh air. The bar upstairs was also closed. None of the bar snacks as advertised on the website were available. This is the only hotel we have ever stayed in where we have been asked for a deposit for the remote control, a £5 deposit for a remote control. We didn't feel like we were staying in a 3* hotel in fact it felt no different to a Travelodge. We had 2 meals there , the first was really nice the next night it must have been a different chef and left a lot to be desired. The presentation differed on the 2 nights plus the cooking of the food was definately a different standard. The room was clean , the views superb. We wouldn't be in a hurry to go back there with the prices that they are charging unless what is shown on the website is actually available. I know it was February but it felt like we were on the Marie Celeste. If a hotel is going to stay open in Winter Months surely it should offer everything it does the rest of the year or a great reduction in price should be available
Can't fault this hotel.
We stayed at the Beaches Hotel for 2 nights during the february half term, myself, my husband and our two children aged 7 and 3. On approaching the hotel, we felt rather worried as it wasn't particularly pleasing to the eye. But once inside, our worries disappeared, the hotel was clean (and smelt clean too, if you know what I mean), the reception staff were marvellous, and a big plus for us, the staff were very good with our children. We booked a family suite through Superbreaks - the family suite actually comprised of a double room and an adjoining twin room. The children thought it was great having their own room - own tv and bathroom. It was quite windy at night being right on the seafront, and the wind howled around the building which scared our children a little (ghosts, y'know!) but the rooms were warm and cosy and once under the duvets, they were fine. We had a lovely view of the sea from our rooms. The pool was fantastic and we actually had the whole pool and spa to ourselves. We didn't use the gym but could see it from the corridor, and it looked very well "stocked" with decent equipment. Breakfast was fab, not too much but certainly enough to set you up for the day. All in all, I couldn't fault the hotel and staff. We had a great time and I am looking forward to returning.
not the same hotel
we have stayed at this hotel for many years going back to when pontins owned it . but on the last visit the food was poor and little selection. the bar is only open 12 til 2 then closes til 5 so for 3hrs you can not get a drink or food and as the hotel is isolated you can,t go up the road to eat. the decor is good but the service lets it down.
The Beaches Hotel - Never Again
We wanted to go here as we had stayed here before when it was called The Grand. Its location which is right on the beach is perfect for walks, lazing on the beach and nipping to the hotel bar for a drink. Our 20 month old daughter we thought would love the beach. The prominard takes you to Rhyll which you can cycle down to, plus you are not far from Chester to visit the zoo. Pity the hotel which when you first step into looks fantastic is run with no care for customers. We booked into our room which we had called to check before hand would take a travel cot... it didn't... we had to rearrange the room to put it up. The room was clean though. We went down for evening meal and was put into a dark back room with other familys next to an exremely noisy fridge. We and others complained about it and they turned it off. We ordered our food. I ordered pasta with vegitables but got pasta with boiled potatoes on a plate. The veg was colli & broc which was so heavily boiled it was soggy. The colli had more black mold then white. We were still by this time waiting for the drinks to arrive and our daughters water which never turned up. We left most of our diner and went down to the reception to complain. We were followed by other complaining familys. We were told the reason was that the main chef was off as he had cooked for a birthday buffet the same night and we were given what the hotel had left... my wife said we are not paying for this rubbish. We were given a free drink and told we would stay in the proper restaurant. Back at our sea view room we settled down for the night, but were kept up as the tide came in about 3pm and the wind was howling through the gaps in the windows. We had no sleep that night even though we put pillows around the window. The next morning I checked the window to see that the seal had gone and you could see light through it. Breakfast for fine except constantly asking for our daughters drink. The meal that night was great (the main chef was back we were told) . The next morning we went down for breakfast. people were complaining already. All the milk in the jugs and gone off and people had poured lumpy milk over there cereal. We kept asking for our drinks and toast which never arrived. We and others agained complained but this time we had had enough. The chef ( not the main chef) was called down by the hotel manager to see what was going off. A cocky full of himself chef turned up and said to me ' what do you want me for'... it went down hill further from here... we stated that we were not going to pay for our stay and asked for our deposit back... others were doing the same.... people were joking calling the place Fawlty Towers.... I would see this as an insult to Basil.
disappointed
My wife and I have visited this Hotel nearly every year for the past twenty years. Until this last visit, in july of this year, we have always been happy with our stay. One of the main reasons for our enjoyment of the hotel was the promenade bar, which had direct access to a patio, which in turn had access to the sea. However on this latest stay, a week, the access was closed arbitrarily as was the bar, apart from one night occasioned by a wedding party. Apart from this food and accommadation ok
