Loved the Pelican Bay!
We just returned from a 4 day stay at the Pelican Bay Hotel in Grand Bahama Island. This was our sixth visit to GBI and our very first time staying at the Pelican Bay Hotel. (We usually stay at the Crowne Plaze Resort & Casino) I must say, our stay at the Pelican Bay Hotel was the BEST yet. The hotel is located away from the main road and away from all of the chaos of people staying at Our Lucaya's Westin & Sheraton properties. Definitely spend the extra money for a suite. The suite was inviting and cozy and above all CLEAN. Our linens were... more
location, charming, lots of smiles
Just got back 3/27....Location is the key word for this lovely quaint hotel...it is on a marina, where boat traffic gives you lots to look at, there are 2 lovely pools a great bar and grill on the water and the best restaurant on the island "The Ferry House" it is pricey but being from the Ct., NY., area we are use to it....the beach is a short walk across the street rows of flowers and plants so enjoy it....you can do a lot or retreat to your large hotel room with balcony.....all with great views, market square is where the music is at... more
Quiet and Peaceful
If you're looking for a quiet hotel, but still want to be close to the action, this is the place. Pelican guests can use the facilities at the Westin, the casino is across the street and the marketplace is next door. The Marketplace has many eateries and shops. We played golf almost every day of our week vacation and found the golf courses at Our Lucaya challenging and beauitfully maintained. The taxi drivers were wonderful, many explained the customs and history of the island. As for the hotel itself, I was slightly disappointed in the... more
Pelican Bay is a great hotel, but stay away from Pier One resturant
My fiance and I went to Freeport for Valentine's day weekend. We arrived in Freeport by way of the Bahamas Ferry "The Cat" leaving from Ft. Lauderdale. This is a huge catamaran that gets you from Ft. Lauderdale to Freeport in less than 2 hours! I highly recommend that you try this boat if you are in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area and are headed to Freeport. AVOID THE DISCOVERY CRUISE!!! The "Cat" is very clean and elegant, unlike the 50 year old Discovery Cruise Ship. Despite, a few minor difficulties at the beginning of our stay, the Pelican... more
Pros and cons
I read all the reviews here before booking my trip, and would like to share my experience. My 2 children and I vacationed here during President's week. I found the hotel aesthetically pleasing, the front desk staff inconsistent in level of help and friendliness, the room pleasant but beds too hard for me(standard room). We had a nice balcony and view, but the outdoor music from Port Lucaya Marketplace was not what I felt like listening to from 8-10 pm. I asked for a room in another building, and they were not able to accomodate me until the... more
will return
This was our first winter vacation. We shoveled our drive in the morning and was on the beach in the afternoon. We loved everything about Grand Bahama Island and Our Lucaya. We had a suite at Pelican Bay and worth every penny. Our deck overlooked the water giving us a great view of the yachts coming in to dock at the marina. Staff was friendly and helpful, but definitely stayed out of your way. Morning pastry's in the door was nice and mini-bar prices surprisingly very affordable. Bottle of water $1.25. Restaurants: Overall the... more
Loved It!
The Pelican Bay is very nice, especially for the price by comparison to the fancier Our Lucaya. Our five night stay, including all the taxes they hit you with, was about $900, but they upgraded us to a suite (we have NO idea why, but we weren't asking!) and the suite is totally the way to go!!!! Nice pass through in the door where they bring you pastries and muffins every morning, and the breakfast they serve on the floating dock is more than plenty to get you through til lunch. The "breakfast lady" Sabrina is so nice, almost all the staff... more
Not Bad
Stayed at Pelican Bay the last week of Jan 2004. The hot tub fits 8 and the pool is fine. Our room was clean and we had no problems. I suggest you request a room on an upper floor, great views. The beach was closer than I expected. Drinks at the Westin pool bars were ridiculous! Buy your own from the market liquor store. A bottle of rum is only $8, two beers from the pool bar was $12! Did the swim with the dolphin thing and the horse back riding and both were great. The only drawback was that it was a little cold at night, pack a sweater and... more
