There couldn't be a better place to get away from it all than Palm Island. We went there as part of our honeymoon, and it was perfect.
The moment we stepped off the boat, there were rum punches served to us on the jetty. We stayed in one of the four Plantation Suites, and on our arrival it was filled with hibiscus flowers, from the beds to the double shower. The suite was nicely decorated, though the lack of glass in the windows took some getting used to: there are wooden slats and mosquito netting instead, great for letting the breeze in at night but not much for sound-proofing when seagulls start yelling early in the morning!
The restaurant is a lovely place to eat, and the views over to Union Island are gorgeous, especially at sunset. The bar staff were friendly, and willing to concoct any cocktail you could come up with. The meals were delicious, not the widest choice in the world but beautifully presented, and I don't remember one bad meal during our stay. There are birds that hang around the restaurant during breakfast and lunch: they can be very amusing, but you can't turn your back on them or else they'll try to land on your plate.
The main beach is wonderfully soft and clean, and better still it is solely for the use of Palm Island Resort guests. Anyone sailing in for the day has to use the smaller beach to the other side of the jetty, and the beach bar/restaurant there. Both the smaller beach and the bar are also pleasant, but you can't beat having the best beach almost to yourself. Its such a big beach that even when other guests are using it, you're still quite a distance from anyone else.
There are a few other beaches around the island, and it is well worth taking a walk round to visit them. The north of the island is much windier, and none of the other beaches are quite so conducive to sunbathing, but they are still good to visit. Take a bike ride round the island, the bikes are dodgy (no brakes!) but fun. The golf course, in the middle of the island, was hilarious. About as far from British courses as its possible to be, but if you don't take it seriously then you can have a good laugh as you go round.
The resort has its own launch, and will take you to Tobago Cays for snorkelling. They take you to one of the uninhabited islands, and while you snorkel amongst gorgeous fish and coral, they prepare a barbeque. You get to stuff your face, then go back in the water for more snorkelling. Unbeatable!
If you feel really decadent, you can order a meal to be delivered to one of the other beaches: if the weather is fine, you get tablecloth and candles. We unfortunately picked the worst weather for our meal, and ended up eating ours whilst sat in a hammock, huddled up under a little roof. Still, it beats sandy sandwiches on a British beach!
We cannot rate Palm Island highly enough, and hope one day to be able to return. We've been to some lovely places all over the world, but Palm Island is a special place to us because it is just so wonderful. Its the nearest most of us will ever get to having our own Caribbean island.
