Florida Hotel

With so much of Old Havana having sadly fallen into disrepair due to the pointless american blockade, Hotel Florida allows a glimpse into the past to see how stunning Havana was 50 years ago and how beautiful it hopefully will be again once the current regeneration project gains momentum. The central ground floor 'patio' area is gorgeous, cool and relaxing; a calm and welcome retreat from the heat and bustle of the streets outside. Lovely building in a superb location. It is not as luxurious as the more expensive Hotel Nacionale, Havana (which we visited) but its in a much better location. Its right in the middle of old Havana, near the bar that Hemingway used to frequent. On arriving in Cuba we were given a huge room, with shutters - unfortunately right over the Hotels nightclub so we had to put up with thudding all night. I had been to Cuba four times before, but never spent any time in Havana (other than day trips from my resort). For this trip I invited my mom to come with me, and we both agreed we wanted to spent a week in Havana and stay in Old Havana. As there isn't many reviews for Hotel Florida, I thought I'd add mine. If you want to experience the real Old Havana, stay here. It is a renovated mansion from the 1800's with only 25 guest rooms. We were lucky to stay on the second floor - request that if you can. The Hotel Florida is in the perfect position to explore Old Havanna and the surrounding areas. The Hotel itself is stunningly beautiful and as others advised it is wise to ask for a room on the second floor as the high ceilings give your room a more spacious feel,unlike the low ceilings of the first floor rooms. The bed was pretty uncomfortable, but the Bathroom was beautifully decorated and there was a good hot shower and deep bath tub. My Partner and I stayed at this Glorious Hotel in May '05. It was booked as a bithday present for my Partner who had always wished to visit Havana, so this had to be right. It's spotlessly clean, in an incredible location, with staff who cannot do enough for you. Stayed in room next to what was Hemmingways. Horrible! Smelly! Dirty! Condition of room very bad. Bed was similar to the one I disposed of 25 years ago. I cried that I HAD to spend two nights there.

Be absolutely clear – if you want the facilities and comfort of a western hotel, don’t stay here. There’s no swimming pool, no master light-switches, not even a remote-control for the TV in my room, no trouser press, no gym. The beds are basic, the rooms clean enough but not exactly comfortable, there’s no double-glazing (actually, no glass at all if I remember correctly) – but plenty of noise outside at all hours of the day and night – and no tea and coffee facilities in the room. Hotel Florida had everything we were hoping for: central location in old old town, quiet enough except for the car alarm the first night for about an hour, decent enough food and excellent coffee and milk and fruit, air conditioning, a balcony, an excellent bottle of rum and standard cuban soda/cola in the mini-fridge along with a half-kilo of dark cuban coffee (a gift for my father), comfortable enough beds, and no surprises, we were expecting cuba to have shortages of things like soap and tissue so make sure to always bring your own! Once you accept that this is a boutique hotel in an old building run by the government in a communist state the Florida is excellent. Nothing should surprise, but we found it very well positioned in the centre of the unrestored part of Old Havana, in a beautiful old building,spacious and moderately clean, with effective and quiet air conditioning in our rooms ( but not most of the public areas) comfortable beds, and an efficient staff. The staff here are friendly and do their best for you. The room we stopped in was very dark, even with all the lights on. My daughter stopped in the room with us on the sofa bed, which was very uncomfortable and didnt seem to fold out properly. On arrriving our room was swimming with water from the air con. not what you need when arriving after midnight! the staff quickly mopped this up, but in the 4 days we stopped and the twice that the man with a spanner looked at it, it leaked to varying degrees during the stay. the food... more
